Book Description

"Kirtan is the calling, the crying, the reaching across infinite space—and digging into the heart's deepest well—to touch and be touched by the Divine Presence," teaches world music pioneer Jai Uttal. On Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant, Jai guides listeners through the practice of Kirtan—singing the many names of God and Goddess—an essential part of Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion. This sacred music form is for all people; there are no experts, nor beginners, and the practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Listeners join Jai Uttal to explore: the power of ancient Sanskrit syllables in chant to invoke the Divine, how to open the voice and learn to love the sound that comes from our bodies, more than two hours of music recorded by Jai Uttal to commune with the Divine through sacred chant, and the path of Bhakti and Kirtan, the journey of surrender, and much more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "A Joyful Noise".......2007-05-16

When I heard an interview on NPR with this artist,Jai Uttal, and music from his CD I couldn't get it out of my mind. It is "a joyful noise" that lifts the spirit and energizes. His very personal explanation of Kirtan on Track 2 gives one an understanding of the spiritual basis of the music and even if it is not a path that you might follow you can't help but be swept up in the chanting. I play it in the car on days when I feel stressed and it removes all that chatter in my head and helps me arrive at my destination uplifted and in the present. His interpretation of the ancient chants using non traditional instruments and renditions is appealing and engaging. P.S.It is a 2 disc set so you can have one at home and one in the car!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Ecstatic As I Like To Be.......2007-04-22

Although a double CD set, both disks pose a problem to this reviewer's taste. Each contains a rather lengthy exposition by the artist on the nature of Bhakti (Devotional) Yoga sandwiched in the program. Jai Uttal has a very pleasant speaking voice & the material was helpful, even inspiring--but do you really want to hear it all over again everytime you play either discs? I know I don't. The musical material is engaging, but not particularly special. It is authentic mantra, but without the technical brilliance of many such CDs (see links below). I don't regret buying it--again, BUT it won't become a treasured favorite. I don't think it would turn-on people who weren't mantra fanatics like me or a real fan of the artist--or a devotee of Kirtan.

PS. The cover artwork is great!

5 out of 5 stars Devotional music at its sweetest.......2007-03-15

This 2-CD set is one of the best introductions to contemporary kirtan I've come across (and I own many kirtan CDs). Aside from the wonderful spoken section, where Jai Uttal chats informally about what kirtan is, the selection of songs is truly heartwarming. I love both CDs, but find I listen over and over again particularly to the second one for its variety of moods and styles. Jai's voice really cuts deep and brings out the intensity and authenticity of his own devotion to the path of music and the heart.

In addition, the musicianship of everyone featured on this set is superb and adds so much to the listening experience. It is hard not to sing along and feel the blessings flow, even if you are not a singer...and that is exactly the point.

5 out of 5 stars Kirtan: The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant by jai Uttal.......2007-03-09

Wonderful kirtan, by a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars How can I express my joy?.......2007-03-06

I was a big fan of Krishna Das and I still am. A couple of weeks ago, for the first time in my life, I heard Jai Uttal's 'Radha Rani ki Jai, Maha Rani ki Jai' - Track # 4 on Disc 2. Like all good music does to my soul, I was so enchanted that I played the same track again and again till I lost count. I wasted no time in getting both the discs and my favorites are as follows:
Disc 1: Track # 3 'Radha Govinda'
Disc 2: Track # 1 'Durga Pahimam', Track # 3 'Jaya Radha', Track # 4 'Radha Rani'
Originally coming from India and being a big proponent of 'Bhakthi Yoga' (Path of devotion and Divine love for God), I can say from the depths of my heart that Jai Uttal sings with such soulful melody and love, it takes my breath away every single time I listen to the tracks mentioned above. It surprises me so much that while I cannot listen to certain types of music even once leave alone repeating my listening experience, the kind of music that Jai Uttal, Krishna Das and others produce, I can listen for a lifetime and experience that joy again and again.

Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans is an 11-song journey bridging the gap between ancient and contemporary history, tradition and modern instrumentation. While it is impossible to fully realize such scope on a single disc, Sacred Spirit makes the choice to represent all indigenous Americans rather than become mired in the potentially divisive bog of politics and tribal allegiance. All but two melodies are entirely traditional, bringing together flute, drums, and vocals with a cello and keyboard wash. This marriage is most effective on the lovely bowing of "The Cradlesong," and the looping electro-acoustic beauty of "Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity." Elsewhere, synthetic elements are overwhelming, detracting from a song's essence, as with the spongy nervosity of "Elevation." An uneven offering, Sacred Spirit doesn't quite live up to its promise. A better choice is Earthbeat's Tribal Waters. --Paige La Grone

This Cd actually makes my mind wander back in time and wonder what it was like living as and indian. The CD is a must for any music lover!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-08

I had heard mixed reviews of this CD, but I found it to be amazing.

3 out of 5 stars Very interesting. Worth buying........2007-04-12

There are a few tracks that are really great on this CD. I expected more Native America chanting/singing and less electronic music. That being said, I really like the CD. It does strike a spiritual chord during some of the tracks. There are reviews here that look like they belong in a magazine. I will just say that if you like World Music or New Age music (and they ARE different), I suspect this is a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars THE best CD i've bought in a long long time!!!!.......2007-04-09

I was watching one of Youtube's clip of the Grand Canyon's Skywalk that opened up last year on an Indian reservation. The clip has this most beautiful trance-like mellow groove song on it and i HAD to find out what or who it was by. Thanks to the helpful people who posted a reply, i was able to find and obtain this CD. The song on that Youtube clip was called [ Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (Circle Dance)]. As the title of this comment says, it IS the best CD i've bought in a VERY a long time. In fact i'm listening to it now as i'm writing this.
The combination of Trance, Newage, Lounge and tranquil music is enough to take you away. I wanna say it's like a combination of Deep Forest meets Jam and Spoon meets Enigma. I just can't put it into better words than the other people who has posted the same comments about this CD. I HIGHLY recommend buying this and enjoying it! I just can't seem to get tire of it!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing Native Music.......2007-03-30

I am a fan of infusion between tribal beat and modern music. This collection is wonderful infusion between tribal beat and enchanting vocal blended with modern instrumental sound. If you like Deep Forest you will definitely love this. It is not like Enigma or Magna Canta but it has it's own charm. I am going to buy all Sacred Spirit volumes after hearing this.

Given the multi-million-copy selling success of Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans, its follow-up, Sacred Spirit II is bound to have a built-in audience. Like its predecessor, the collection mixes chant and song with dance beats and electronic instrumentation. While tracks such as "Dela Dela" and "Yane-Heja-Hee" meld these elements most effectively, the overall effect of the synthesized sound is heavily over the top and distracting from the gentle melodies and heartfelt cries of Native music at its best. A prime example is the tender and lovely female vocal on "May You Walk in Sunshine," obscured by overly aggressive accompaniment. A more solid and aesthetically pleasing choice for the genre is Prophecy: A Native American Collection, which achieves a finer balance of modern and ancient. --Paige La Grone

A new type of music for the soul. It's wonderful. It's beautiful. It's exciting. And worth listening to. It's Native American chants and dances
done with some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.

The music has a rhythmic beat that's very catchy, but very soothing. I enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another excellent CD from the same producers.......2007-04-22

Continuing from the first great CD, Sacred Spirit II brings you more of the great mix of Native American music with modern grooves and beats.
I highly recommend this CD as well !!!

4 out of 5 stars Good but not excellent as Vol 1.......2007-01-26

I expected more of this volume since the first one is real extraordinary, and seems to be hard to beat. However is good enough to have it. Good production and most of the tracks are in the same mood of the first volume.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!.......2007-01-15

We bought this CD while visiting Arizona last summer. We loved it so much that we have purchased this copy through Amazon for a friend as a Christmas Gift. He loves it too! This is a great combination of spiritual, Native music and chants along with "pop" melodies. I normally play inspirational CD's....lots of Native flute music, and meditation CD's but this one (and also Sacred Spirit Vol. 1) I can play when I have guests over and they do not fall asleep!
Love it!

4 out of 5 stars Very good new age-native fusion.......2005-06-10

Discount the self-important blather from "professional" drummers and First Nation/Capitolized Ethnic Group people you see here and buy this CD if you enjoy better quality new age music in a native vein. This CD and its highly successful predecessor was NEVER meant to be a hard-core exploration of genuine Native American drumming, flute or chanting, though it masterfully incorporates such music alongside other simple nativist percussion. Yes, persons looking outside the world music (or new age) genres for actual Native chanting and drumming may be disappointed, but it never hurts to open your ears to new things. But if that's too hard and you crave the "real thing," may I suggest Tokeya Inajin, Dik Darnell or Carlos Nakai.

4 out of 5 stars EARTH CENTERED MUSIC.......2005-04-28

I HEARD THIS CD IN A SPIRITUAL SERVICE. I ENJOYED IT! I SEARCH IN THE WEB AND I BOUGHT IT! I LISTEN IT IN THE CAR OR WHEN I WANT TO FEEL MY SELF "EARTH CENTERED". REALLY IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR "DRUMS" LIKE IN LATIN MUSIC, MODERN MUSIC, IT ISNT.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SOFT/ACTIVE RELAXING MUSIC, SO THAT YOU CAN FEEL ONE WITH THE EARTH, AND YOU GET FLASH BACK OF OTHER PRIMITIVES TIMES, THIS IS FOR YOU. THAT'S MY EXPERIENCE.

1 out of 5 stars Indian Welk.......2004-10-18

Although this may sound pleasant to some people I would imagine it's an insult to others. Just another example of the exploitation of the true Americans. It's like there was a Lawrance Welk of native American music only worse. An equivelant might be buying a Metallica cd and hearing Madonna music coming from the speakers. You expected something with some real spirit but you got watered down syrupy bubblegum music instead. It's not the real thing. Besides that I'm a professional drummer, and I'm definitly not impressed with the drumming. But having said that, if you just want some pop music to listen to and delude yourself that your listening to real native American music then this is for you.

It would probably be better to rename it and put a different picture on the cover that would be less insulting to the people it's making a mockery of and more suitable to the disco minded crowd it's apparently trying to foster.

1 out of 5 stars Sacred Spirit Drums.......2004-04-28

My husband is First Nation and has played on traditional Pow Wow drums. The music on this CD seems very contrived. I think it is better to get real First Nation drum music rather than to turn it into this unrecognizable, synthesized and distorted electronic sound. It is being "passed off" as Native. To me it it is not Native. It sounded, well, sorry, but, it sounded tacky. I don't know if Mr. Gordon is First Nation. Some of it even seems to be somewhat African, which would be appropriate if it where meant to be African in nature. But, all in all, it's far to "Hollywood" for me. And we all know how "Hollywood" has mis-informed the world about our First Nation's history. But, I guess the bottom line for the producers of this type of CD is - this stuff sells.
The drum is the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Her heart is not heard with this rendition.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual History of Celtic Ireland.......2007-06-24

This is one of those CD's that keeps you guessing about its meaning. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, 2 solo CD's, & several movie theme CD's joins forces with Patrick Cassidy to create an antithetical sound scape of what in my interpretation maybe about the history of Celtic Spirituality on the island of Ireland.

The 1st song "The Song of Amergin" is about Amergin, a Celtic leader who according to legend is the 1st to set foot on Ireland to battle the "god's" for possession of the land.

The 2nd song "Maranatha" (Come Lord) maybe about Saint Patrick bringing Christianity to the Ireland or maybe the cry of the land to free itself from the ancient pagan gods.

The 3rd song "Amergin's Invocation" makes the final cleansing of the land which the 4th song "Elegy" mourns the death of the pagan gods.

The 5th song "Sailing to Byzantium" is the 1st form of Christianity to come to the Celtics. Historically the Celtic Christian church was semi-independent from Rome & took on a more Eastern Byzantine to almost Coptic Christian Mysticism that expressed the love of God & nature.

The 6th song is the most interesting on the CD; "Abwoon" is Aramaic for "Our Father" that Lisa Gerrard sings with a deep alto using the Aramaic language that Jesus used for his "How to Pray" prayer when he was on the Earth.

The 7th song "Immortal Memory" maybe about the universality of ancient Christianity or how God remembers all things? Or maybe this being the theme song is an overview of the rest of the songs?

The 8th song "Paradise Lost" maybe about the overtaking of the Celtic Church to conform to Roman Catholic doctrine & practice by Bishop Augustine 600 A.D. (not Saint Augustine of Hippo 400 A.D.) or about how modern Ireland has forgotten its true spiritual roots.

The 9th song "I Asked For Love" is plainly about getting the opposite from prayer until one just asks for God where he or she may receive freely.

The 10th song "Psallit In Aure Dei" is Patrick Cassidy main score from the words of Thomas of Celano, who was a disciple of & wrote a biography about Saint Francis of Assisi.

Try to come up with your own interpretation of this intriguing CD.

Well produced to bring out Lisa Gerrard's most unique singing style, but not as original as her 2 solo CD's "The Mirror Pool" & "Duality". Reading a few reviews below I agree that at times the music from this CD sounds like "Gorecki's 3rd Symphony" or something like Arvo Part to John Travener but it is done in good taste. Therefore a "4" is given for lack of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Dark.......2007-03-17

Paradise Lost is darker than Hell itself; my stomach churns and writhes in knots every time I hear it. I love it.

Amazing album, haunting, and worth every penny for Paradise Lost alone. There are a few tracks that aren't very memorable, but all in all this is a five-star album.

2 out of 5 stars Immortal Memory...Forgettable Melodies.......2006-05-10

Although these compositions are characterised by pleasing tonalities recorded in richly reverberant ambiance, they are altogether lacking with regard to melodic development or musical substance. There is nothing memorable about "Immortal Memory." Emotionally flat, this disc is positively dreary. This CD contains 57 minutes of excessively introspective, monotonous music that inspires nearly as much emotion as contemplating drying cement. An antidepressant medication may be necessary after listening. A disappointing addition to my musical library.

3 out of 5 stars haunting yet empty.......2005-10-19

It is hard not to reference or compare Lisa Gerard's solo efforts to Dead Can Dance catalogue. I guess I was expecting something that would continue DCD tradition. The first thing that struck me was that the dead could really dance to the DCD music but they appear to be haunted and sorry ghosts in "Immortal Memory". The music is truly mournful. There is nothing wrong with mournful and haunting program for a dics, but I found those emotions falling little flat in Lisa Gerard's production. Her music sounds very ambitious but never achieves the drama and "goose bumps" effect of Gorecki's III Symphony (Symphony of Sorrow Songs) or Avro Part's "Fratres". Maybe this comparison is not fair, after all the latter two are classical music's contemporary masters, but I get an impression that Lisa Gerard's aim was equally serious. Maybe she set her goals too high.

4 out of 5 stars Ethereal beauty.......2005-07-29

This album is perfect for drifting off to sleep, or for a relaxing meditation session. The music is very much like a soundtrack (similar in feel to Gerrard's "Whale Rider" soundtrack work). The music is orchestral and ethereal with Gerrard's haunting vocals. She has one of the most distinctive voices in modern music and her voice is in top form here.

So why 4 stars as opposed to 5? It is almost too mellow. I really prefer the greater diversity of sounds on her previous solo efforts. This album is great in certain scenarios and a wonderful album to relax too, but somehow it leaves me wanting just a little more. All in all, though it really is lovely and the perfect way to wind down and relax in swirls of beauty in today's crazy fast-paced world.

Album Description

Over 20 million Americans make yoga a regular part of their daily routine. Thousands of teachers throughout the US are introducing students from all walks of life to the clear-minded vitality and vigor that a regular yoga practice offers. For many, music plays a key role in this yogic experience.

SACRED MOVEMENT is the first in a series of music CDs sequenced specifically for yoga practice. Master yoga instructor Max Strom designed the program to "help lead people into their practice," and selected music that he uses in his Flow Yoga classes at Sacred Movement Yoga Center in Los Angeles.

Just like Max's yoga sessions, SACRED MOVEMENT begins with a diverse and energetic progression of songs from Hamza El Din, Prem Joshua, Thomas Barquee, Stellamara and others. As the yoga sequence winds down, tracks by B-Tribe, Bruce BecVar and dj Cheb i Sabbah create an ethereal ambience, leading the practitioner into a nurturing state of relaxation.

Max Strom believes that "yoga was designed to revolutionize our lives" spiritually as well as physically. SACRED MOVEMENT then is not just a "music for yoga" CD. It is a set of deep, reflective music especially selected by a master teacher to assist with this healthful transformation.

5 out of 5 stars Walks the talk.......2004-10-12

I have been practicing flow yoga for many years, but I never found one cd that could take me from warm up through more vigorous poses and finally to a meditative finish until this one. Usually, I have to change cd's or cuts on a cd to fit the rhythm of my practice, but Max has found the perfect order of music selections to accompany my practice. His choice of musicians is inspired; they are all based in spiritual disciplines themselves. So their music reflects the inner spirit while bathing the body and mind in the glow of their magical sounds. This cd is seamless - from the "flow" of the tempos to the congruency of musician and music. I highly recommend this carefully choreographed anthology of celestial sounds of theology. Yoga means "to link up with the Divine," and the music on this cd does just that.

5 out of 5 stars BEYOND DROP DEAD GORGEOUS.......2007-07-24

Stepping Off the Edge: Learning & Living Spiritual Practice I've been a Bill Miller fan since the late 1990s, when his music knocked me over in a Western store near my hometown. Bill's won a couple of Grammys and a ton of other awards since then, becoming a much better known performer. So many things to like about his work: It's elegant, sophisticated, moving, deep, full of meaning, and absolutely gorgeous. This CD, done in collaboration with Sacred Earth, is all of that. Wind of the West beautifully illustrates how contemporary music by Native Americans can be. This is 100% American Indian, and yet it has echoes of indigenous cultures worldwide. Bill's vocals will blow your mind. I don't think I've ever heard his voice displayed so well. The instrumentation is haunting, complex, and sophisticated. I have friends who play primarily Eastern instruments--tablas, didjeredoos, a variety of flutes and other drums. This reminded me of their work. It's also meditative. I've meditated for many years, and this album took me to my finest times in the meditation hall. It's elevating and inspiring. Many thanks, Bill! Many thanks, Sacred Earth.

After dark descents into the abyss on The Magnificent Void and Midnight Moon, Steve Roach lightens up the textures a bit on the double CD Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces. The mood harkens back to his influential 1984 release, Structures From Silence, but the atmospheres are more textured and layered while melody is virtually non-existent. And while Structures had a slow motion pulse, Mystic Chords hangs rhythm free. It floats in a space of richly detailed, but minutely shifting sound constructs that owe more to Gyorgy Ligeti and Mark Rothko than early Roach touchstones like Klaus Schulze and Salvador Dali. Roach is creating a free fall through space, less rooted in the pulsing techno-tribal sound of his 1990s music, and more ecstatic in its evocations of something beyond. He carries you to groaning turgid depths, then lifts you as electric guitar glides and synthesizers gurgle, shudder, and swell in an Aurora Borealis of sound. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Amazing sounds!.......2007-05-26

I bought this CD to use for a shamanic journey that I was hoping to go on. The two CDs are very soothing and very suitable for meditations or for just relaxing. The sounds are amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A harkening back to Quiet Music.......2006-03-19

Steve Roach has so many roots that to say he is harkening back to any one of them requires additional explanation. In this case he is reaching deeply into his more meditative sounds, akin to but by no means a repeat of "Structures from Silence" and "Quiet Music."
The first time I played this double album I had some guests over discussing a novel one of them had written. Just hearing it once lead to another sale to someone who was completely unfamiliar with Steve's music. Very melodious beautiful sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond of Eternity.......2005-10-12

So, that's much more than music. This album is a treasure!!!
I could rate it even with infinity of stars if I could!!!
It is STAR itself.

Synths and pads, which come under your skin and you feel part of this sensation. When I listen to it - I close my eyes and find myself drifting through the Universe. It is exactly what I always wish to hear when I think of Time and Space, about eternity. Real MASTERPIECE!!! So, this album is destinied to have it in collection for those, who wants to go loose in order to forget anything uncomfortable and boring.
Happy flight to the STARS!!!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece........2005-06-12

This is easily one of Steve Roach's finest hours - well, 5 hours to be more precise, if you get the complete set (it is available in either a 2-CD or 4-CD version). Disc 1 of 4, Mystic Chords, is what I would call the "classic" organic ambient style of Steve Roach; Labyrinth is his dark ambient style; Recent Future is a tasty variety sampler platter; and Piece of Infinity is one of Steve's trademark minimal long-form works, perhaps the subtlest and softest he has ever done. My favorite is the first disc, 5 tracks running from nearly 12 to just over 20 minutes each. There are great highs and lows, wonderful deep drones and high shimmering tones, all richly layered in an organic primordial soup that touches a vibrant nerve for a thoroughly soothing listening experience. Reaching deeper still is Labyrinth, 10 tracks that plunge deep into "The Otherworld," a track which is representative of the intense darkness found at several moments on disc two. Though undeniably Roach, I'm also reminded here of old haunting Schulze numbers from the early 1970s. Disc 3, Recent Future, is still a little dark, but not as much as Labyrinth. Not a beat is heard, but the variety on these 13 tracks while retaining a cohesive quality is remarkable. Light, dark, simple, complex, visceral, elegant - all are apt adjectives to describe the music. Sample to your heart's delight, or better yet, play it through from beginning to end and hear the flow as Steve intended. Consider it time very well spent.

4 out of 5 stars Really good........2005-03-28

Massive sounds. Evokes impressions of large gaseous clouds in space as you float through them. A nearly rythemnless journey through time, space and the inner being. Can let your imagination run wild while calming you at the same time. Good for traffic, studying, creating and voyaging. This is deeply textured ambient and will take several listens to identify each unique sound.
