5 out of 5 stars Spiritualized never will be like this.......2006-09-01

Honey. One of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. The others? The following of a masterpiece, where echoes of 60's, 70's garage psychadelia reverb high on our ears.

Revolution. To me the only band that had got the same uprising feeling with guitars and percussion is Hawkwind. They rock like Hawkwind and they can be beautiful like Velvet Underground, Love or Jesus And Mary Chain. Rock on, keep on, silence you may rest in peace.

5 out of 5 stars Great .......2006-06-27

In my opinion this is not only their masterpiece but it is also a personal top 20 favourite. They never did anything better before or after. I saw them at the Neew Morning in 80-something and was completely blown away. Seeing them play Suicide live for what seemed like 30 minutes was quite something.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2002-08-15

This is the second of the Spacemen 3 discs I picked up and I like it even better than the first. The first was The Perfect Prescription, which is unbelievable. Both albums are phenomenal choices for everything from late-night listening to all-out rockin'. The tracks range from dreamy psychedelic wanderings (Honey, How Does It Feel, So Hot) to feedback-laden assaults (Suicide, Revolution). I've seen a lot of comparisons to the Velvet Underground in the reviews and I have to agree. It's got a very British garage-band minimalistic sound mixed in with incredible post-production and downright guitar genius.

I'm a huge fan of Spiritualized and I am totally enjoying digging into the band's roots. I've also been checking out the other post-Spacemen outfits: Reverberation, Spectrum/E.A.R., Sonic Boom, and have liked all of it so far.

This album is definitely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars First album of things to come.......2001-11-07

Playing with Fire signaled the beginning of the end for the group as a whole. You can already hear the different approaches that Sonic and Jason are trying.
Sonic's songs like HOW DOES IT FEEL and LET ME DOWN GENTLY are droney and heavily distorted minimal tones.
While Jason's are more dreamy pop songs like COME DOWN SOFTLY TO MY SOUL and SO HOT.
Still this is a great album of dreamy minimal space music the only exceptions are the rockin' REVOLUTION and the 11:00 drone noise epic SUICIDE co-written by both Spacemen.
Keep in mind this is 1988 which makes it even that much more revolutionary.

4 out of 5 stars It's very beautiful for your ears.......2000-09-25

Playing with Fire steps away from Spacemen 3's distortion- and reverb-soaked early albums and instead takes on a more orchestral feel. With a good mix of covers and originals, loud (on a few) and soft, Spacemen 3 expanded their M.O. on this album and lay groundwork for the current 'explosion' of orchestral-pop records. Soothing and brilliant, Playing with Fire has a nearly timeless quality that you will appreciate now and years from now.

I think my title says enough!!! don't waste ur money! i did and uggg.

1 out of 5 stars Why was he even given a chance?.......2007-06-13

I am a singer/guitar player for a local band in New Orleans. My band and I have been playing clubs, festivals, bars and other venues in the southeast Louisiana region for over 6 years.

Being a musician is hard work (especially if you have a "day job"). The hours suck and when you factor in practice time, setup time, performance time and teardown time (plus gas and mileage) the money you make is WELL below minimum wage.

My band is working on recording its first album with all original songs. Songwriting and studio recording is also hard work. We didn't have the luxury of building our own studio with the money our wives made. We also didn't have the luxury of gaining worldwide fame because we married someone who's already famous.

My whole point is, there are so many talented musicians and bands in the world that go unrecognized. Does that deter them/us?

No. We go on singing, playing and recording because of our love for music and the joy we get when other people love our music too. We don't do it for the money. We do it because we love music as an art form.

Apparently, Federline recorded this album with no more motivation other than to make money or to establish "street cred".

Whatever.

I'm sure the streets of Fresno have a way of stripping away your soul and creating angst about the injustices of society.

Again, I give that a big fat "whatever".

"K-Fed"'s recording deal is like a slap in the face to all of those bands and musicians who are struggling to "make it". It also proves that these record producers and record companies can be pretty gullible when it comes to what they think will be popular music or not (the abyssmal sales of Playing With Fire is only one example).

Federline was given a record contract because of WHO he was married to, not because of any real talent. His first single Popozao (spelling ?)was laughed right out of the clubs and was wisely excluded from K-Fed's debut album. That right there should have given his producer(s) a clue as to what was to come.

Yes. Because of his (dubious) "celebrity" status, Federline was given a recording deal despite the evidence of any musical talent. I guess that's a perfect way to sum up the music industry today.

It's not about how talented you are. It's about who you know.

The public deserves better than that.

How's that for angst?

5 out of 5 stars SURPRISINGLY BRILLIANT.......2007-05-15

It is tempting to look at Kevin Federline's album and think "another nail in the coffin of popular music." That Britney Spears' bad-boy freeloader husband gets a major label shot in these days of consolidation seems like a crime. The first single from this record "Lose Control" did not offer much hope, the type of clichéd hip hop/pop product beloved by twelve-year-olds and the radio programmers that serve them.
It is that much more shocking that "Playing With Fire" is a daring, exciting, marvelously ingenious album, as good as anything released this year. Only the single and "Dance With a Pimp" could be defined hip-hop; the rest of the album is a dizzyingly inventive mix of sixties rock, seventies singer-songwriter, prog rock, R&B and even classical. KFed obviously had some help putting this together, but the album credits are uninformative. Rumors of superstar appearances cannot be confirmed; they can only be guessed at.
The album opens with "The World is Mine," but rather than a boastful rap, it is a summer-of-love anthem. The funky organ is played by Rascal Felix Cavaliere, whose timeless singing back-up for K-Fed's soaring vocal. "America's Most Hated" follows, a hard-rock shouter that would not have been out of place on Nevermind. "Snap" is a funky soul groove that Prince has been trying to write for the last 15 years. The track deftly samples "'Round Midnight," "Maybe Your Baby," and "No Pussyfooting." Through three songs, one is immediately impressed with K-Fed's vocals. This wonder is maintained throughout the whole album. On the slow tracks, he sounds like a cross between Carl Wilson and Paul McCartney; on the up-tempo songs, he can bring it like Sam Cooke or Bobby Womack.
"Lose Control" comes next, and though it breaks momentum, it is immediately followed by the other hip-hop track, "Dance Like a Pimp (featuring Ya Boy.)" This hard, almost grungy rap song was originally supposed to feature Ya Kid K, but when she and Felly were unavailable, Ya Boy was enlisted. "Dance Like a Pimp" will upset many people in the rap community, being an eloquent indictment of hip-hop's misogyny, violence, homophobia, racism and nihilism.
"Privilege (featuring Bosko)" follows. Co-written with Roger Waters, this song addresses a topic close to K-Fed's heart: how the upper classes of Fresno escaped any hardship during World War II, while the poorer families lost loved ones on the field of battle. It is a mystery who "Bosko" is, but that ringing guitar solo can be no one else but Waters' Pink Floyd mate, David Gilmour.
A cover of Willie Nelson's "Crazy" may seem unnecessary, but it makes a charming duet with Britney. "A League of My Own" is a touching tribute to women's baseball.
The title track features a guitar riff that Pete Townshend will probably kick himself that he didn't think of it first. K-Fed plays some mean harmonica as the track fades out into "Caught Up," which features Steve Winwood on organ, Mike Campbell on twelve-string, and Jeff Lynne on bass.
If everything so far has been pretty terrific, it is the last track "Keep On Talkin'" that transcends any expectations. Clocking in at twenty-four minutes, it starts off with K-Fed singing a beautiful melody with acoustic guitar (sounds like Jimmy Page!) accompaniment. Slowly, the song builds momentum as a traditional rock backing shifts the song into second gear. A short interlude with Indian percussion, sarod and sitar is interrupted by an all-out assault of screaming guitars. K-Fed shouts himself hoarse as he rails against the injustices of the world. Suddenly, chimes, celli, and harmonium bring peace to the maelstrom. KFed starts singing a soaring new melody, a beautiful guitar (Gilmour again?) doubles his voice, a choir and full orchestra take up the melody and if you don't have goose-bumps by this point, you're dead. K-Fed's vocal breaks off, and the final four minutes or so are an orchestral coda that on first listen sounded Mahlerian, but now I'm convinced it's more like late-period Bruckner. The chime of a bell fades into silence.
I have listened to this album seven times today. Up until now, Sgt. Pepper, Blonde on Blonde and Kind of Blue have been the standard against which all music is measured. I can confidently say that "Playing with Fire" will deservedly join that pantheon.

1 out of 5 stars Kool Kutz.......2007-04-18

Hey Maaan-you all is missin' da point! This here's a case of the K-Fed releasin' some of his C-Rap! Pity there isn't a no-star rating!

2 out of 5 stars You're fired.......2007-03-31

Considering that Kevin Federline's album Playing With Fire has almost 250 reviews on here and sales show that that's about equivalent to the number of people that bought the album, I think it's safe to say that most of the reviewers on here didn't even listen to the album (I guess they have more sense that I do -- but still, I again ask, "How can you write a review for an album without having listened to it???"). Anyway, some people may look at my rating for this album and think I gave it one star too many (or maybe TWO stars too many). Well, the truth of the matter is, I think that if K-Fed were refocused, maybe, MAYBE he would have some credible talent. But that doesn't change the fact that this album is pretty lackluster.

There really aren't any true high points on this album, but a majority of the songs are just plain wack, especially "League of My Own", "Dance With a Pimp" (that title is pretty wack, too) and the failed party starter, "Lose Control". The title track goes nowhere; and K-Fed isn't helped by (then-)wifey Britney Spears on "Crazy". But that song also features misguided lyrics like, "Never been a surfer but my chain hang loose/Got so much flavor like 2Pac juice." What does that even MEAN?

And that's another problem. K-Fed keeps throwing around braggadocios about how rich and famous he is, when I think it's safe to say that he wouldn't have any of that glamour had he not married Ms. Spears. And considering this album didn't sell very much anyway, it's not likely that it'll win any awards. In the end, Playing With Fire is a pretty good title for this mess because after listening to it, you'll probably want to burn it -- and I don't mean to your computer.

Bonnie Rideout is an American who has mastered the art of Scottish fiddling. Scottish Fire is a selection of tunes that cover almost the entire range of traditional Caledonian music. There are marches, complete with bagpipes and drums, dance tunes of every variety, including reels, strathspeys, waltzes, hornpipes, and slow airs. Rideout plays them all with equal facility but she really shines on the unaccompanied slow selections like the heartbreaking "Lude's Lament." The instrumentation includes the now standard guitar, cittern, and bodhrán, as well as the more unusual viola da gamba. As on her previous releases such as Soft May Morn and Celtic Circles, Rideout has unearthed tunes from old manuscript collections in Scotland. Many of these melodies haven't been heard for centuries and Rideout has done us all a favor by bringing them back to life. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Prolific recording artist who respects the tradition while keeping it fresh........2007-07-20

An American musician who does the Scottish fiddle tradition proud -- Bonnie Rideout delivers. This album delivers the whole package -- the lyricism of Alasdair Fraser, the drive of Natalie MacMaster, and the eclecticism of Capercaillie (the more roots-oriented of their work) -- this is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-03-27

A Very good job by a master of the craft, recomended for listeners to all types of music, a great listen!

5 out of 5 stars outstanding!!.......2006-08-23

Bonnie Rideout is outstanding and like her other works, "Scottish Fire" is absolutely breath-taking! For anyone interested in genuine Celtic music, this is the only choice.

4 out of 5 stars Great Fire.......2006-08-02

Great movement in the music; enjoyable recording but would be better as a studio recording in lieu of a concert with player and audience ad hoc vocals.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2005-08-09

I bought this cd for background music for my wedding reception. The wedding and reception was at a Scottish style Inn in North Carolina, and, after listening to the music samples, I thought it would be perfect. I liked it because not only is the woman extremely talented, but because it is engaging and unobtrusive, and it does not sound like your typical discount rack Celtic music. I listened to a lot of music, searching for just the right thing, and this was simply the best. This woman has real talent!

This guy is good. I mean really really good. I just reviewed the Talk To Me cd and gave it five stars. I do the same for this one and his others. If you like great smooth jazz this is it. Can't go wrong with this guy. Check out the samples and then just realize what the rest of the songs would be like. Great music here by Sam Riney. I really just found out about him and I am getting all of his stuff. Check it out!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Playing With Sensuality".......2001-05-28

The first time I heard this album was when I was sleeping over at my uncle's house one night back home in Lagos. It was late and the stars were out, the kind of night that leaves you restless yet so tired, you want nothing more than to just lay down - with a lover by your side. Granted, it was my UNCLE and NOT my lover who was with me at the time, but that didn't matter so much. "Playing With Fire" was the album that filled my dreams with visions of sexy, smooth nights under the stars. Up until then I had never given jazz the time of day, but something in the way Sam Riney plays that sax just got me - and still he gets me! From the opening track "Everytime We Kiss", Riney takes you on an ethereal journey. The songs and hooks remain in your mind because they are so lovely. Everytime I hear this album I know that somewhere, an angel is crying. Why? Because Riney's magic touch leaves everybody feeling good. If you are the kind of person who fantasizes about midnight car rides by the sea under the stars, then "Playing With Fire" is the ideal soundtrack for your romantic adventures. Lay back, relax, and listen...."a masterpiece"

In Ireland, both north and south, there's a generation who has grown up powerfully aware of other music, such as punk or The Pogues, techno and jungle--more and more they're interested in playing the old music, and they're investing in it with muscle it never had. Bands like Nomos, Solas, and now add Dervish to the list. Given their whirling of a tune, it's an apt moniker. Fiery musicianship balanced with Cathy Jordan's delicate vocals give something that holds onto yesterday while stepping into tomorrow. And, in "I Buried My Wife and Danced on Top of Her," they've exhumed (no pun intended; well, maybe) one of the great song titles--although, if it appeals, gentlemen, wait until she's dead first. The fact that bands like this exist, playing not with reverence but with fire in their bellies, shows that this tradition (and many others around the globe) is still evolving, and can be as relevant as anything else. --Chris Nickson

I first heard Dervish in a small music shop in Ballyshannon, Ireland. The music's raw energy caught me instantly. Later in the week, I saw them play at the Ballyshannon Folk Festival. The experience blew my mind. The tent was packed full of all different kinds of people: drunk 20-somethings, stuffy American tourists, little kids, Irish shopkeepers ... all riveted by every note. This is an amazing group of musicians and an amazing recording.

Playing with Fire isn't quite as good as At the End of the Day, but it's still a five-star album. The opening track of this album is one of my favorites of any of Dervish's albums.

      5 out of 5 stars On Fire!.......2006-07-31

Wow! Two of the best jazz trumpeters around have gotten together and recorded something that lives up to both their reputations! Their playing is fiery in some parts, while beautiful in others. Shew and Harrel are both equally technically masterful when it comes to the trumpet, and they don't try to "out-play" each other - they play for a collective great sound.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-04-19

The title of this album will easily let one think that it's a trumpet battle session. Well Bobby Shew and Tom Harrell do play with fire but they also play with great passion and respect for the music and for each other. As all top professional performers they have checked their ego at the door and deliver a beautiful, relaxed, swinging and simply wonderful quintet album. For the rhythm section they have chosen the best players in the business (John Patitucci, Roy McCurdy and Kei Akagi).

      5 out of 5 stars Still waiting..........2002-02-05

I saw Adalberto Alvares y Su Son in the summer of 1999 in SummerStage at Central Park, New York. Although I grew up in Cali, Colombia listening to and dancing Salsa, I was amazed at what I was hearing. The music was perfect in every sence, and Iramis Galindo's voice was out of this world. I bought the CD on the spot thinking that it would not compare to the live music I had just heard; I was mistaken. I still listen to this CD regularly and never get tired of it. I went to Cali where noone had heard this songs, played them in a few parties, and always got a "who's that!" reaction. I also bought the previous album "Magistral" and loved it, it's a must-have. I come to this web site hoping that there's a new release by AA, but nothing yet. That's ok, I'll keep waiting.

Sigo prefiriendo la salsa hecha en Puerto Rico, pero debo reconocer la calidad de esta producción. "Una Mulata En La Habana", "Y No Me Da La Cuenta" y "911" son temas extraordinarios para bailar.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-10-13

I had listened to Adalberto Alvarez in various "collection" CDs and decided to buy this and the companion "Adalbérto Alvarez y su Són" based on the recommendations of the previous reviewers. I agree with the other write-ups, these are excellent and indeed make anybody want to dance - not really feasible at work but nonetheless.... I grew up in Cuba and have a large CD collection however, these two really shine. I particularly like "A Bailár El Toca Toca" on this one and the last selection on the other one ¿Y Qué Tu Quiéres Que Te Dén?, however there is hardly a bad cut in either.

      5 out of 5 stars Ghawk.......2000-06-23

This is an excellent CD! Great breakdowns within the songs. Which I like when I dance because then you feel the "gusto" and the music takes you over!

      5 out of 5 stars BEST TIMBA.......2000-04-20

Adalberto Alvarez, former member of Los Van Van, is by far the best Salsa performer in Cuba today. This album will keep you dancing all night long. The first cut has cool bosanova undertones and speaks of love affairs between turists and the Havana "Jineteras". The slow numbers bring you back to the mellow bitter-sweet nights filled with mojitos and cigars. It makes you wonder if he should have won the Grammy rather than his former band.

5 out of 5 stars Playing with Fire.......2005-02-04

More great music form Celtophile. I continue to be impressed by their wonderful turnouts. There are some really great, beautiful Celtic instrumentals on Playing with Fire. Celtic music brings to me such good memories, such good feelings. I swear I'm a better person for it. Everyone should have Celtic music in her or his life, and this is some of the best.

Individual instruments stand out and blend together by turns in Fire. This album is appropriately named, for indeed, it sets your heart on fire, all the while bringing out a playful nature in it. This is music you turn on when you want to feel good but still get quality--Fire sets your feet to tapping and your heart to jumping for joy. There's not much music you can get out there that does that, but here it is.

I am simply amazed by how well this music works. It goes anywhere--work, play, whatever. I usually listen to it while I run marathons--it energizes me and keeps me going until the last. It's all got great beat and a generally wonderful feeling about it--even when it's overcast outside, this music brings sunlight to your heart.

      5 out of 5 stars A rollicking good mix!.......2003-05-25

Fast, fiery and full of fun, "Playing with Fire: Contemporary Celtic Instrumentals" features finger-flying favorites from Green Linnet artists. Included are up-tempo jigs, reels and sets from such prodigious artists as Deanta, Capercaillie, Wolfstone, Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, the Simon Thoumire Three, Eileen Ivers, The House Band, Niamh Parsons and the Loose Connections, Pat Kilbride, Kevin Burke's Open House, and Kips Bay. This is great music to perk you up and get you moving, as well as for driving to. Don't miss it! And for more upbeat Celtic fare, try also "Bravehearts: New Scots Music: A Narada Collection".
