Industrial Breakdown [EP]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's no surprise Industrial Breakdown sounds like a strange mix between the naive rock of Beat Happening and the sweaty deep funk of James Brown--that's exactly what it is. Call it the latest novelty genre-fusion, but Olympia, Washington,'s Beat Happening/K Records head Calvin Johnson just calls it some good ol' studio tinkering fun. On the title cut of Dub Narcotic Sound System's five-song EP, Johnson dissects and contorts the archetypal "Sex Machine" guitar riff using all the knobs and gadgets at his disposal, plus the help of an uncredited K Records "house band," to create a new twist on the indie rock alchemy he's defined over the last decade. --Roni Sarig
