East of Broadway: A Benefit for Fourth Arts Block

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
"East of Broadway" A Benefit for Fourth Arts Block" is an eclectic mix of alternative rock and jazz music. The opening track, a cover song by Yo La Tengo, invites you to "come along with me to my little corner of the world", which could be anywhere, but in the case of this CD is Manhattan's Lower East Side. The CD conjures images of the neighborhood, and not only because some songs, like Spacehog's snarling "Second Avenue" or the superb "Picciaridu" by Matt Munisteri, reference street names. The CD contains tracks by many artists associated with the neighborhood, such as Philip Glass who performs "Closing", and the Jazz Passengers who perform "Maybe I'm Lost", with lead vocals by Deborah Harry.

With 18 song, totaling 78 minutes, the CD ranges from electronic and guitar based alternative rock to hard bop jazz music. There are many other standout tracks, including Luna's "Double Feature", Ani DiFranco's "Cradle and All" and Moby's "In My Heart". There's no filler as the CD moves from genre to genre, from rock to ballad to jazz.

The CD is a benefit for Fourth Arts Block, a non-profit association of more than a dozen theaters, dance companies, visual arts groups and low income housing organizations on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Funds will go towards the renovation of six cultural buildings in order to restore and create rehearsal and performance spaces, and expand cultural activity on East 4th Street, between the Bowery and Second Ave. In a community beset by rising rents and threatened with the loss of some legendary performance spaces, it's a worthy cause indeed.
