About the Artist
PATRICK SULER is a New Jersey artist who has been playing guitar and/or singing in a colorful (and often disturbing) variety of bands since 1994. Patrick served in an Art rock band, a 60s retro psychedelic group, and often filled in when friends' needed a musician in a pinch.

Patrick's experience across a spectrum of styles has left him with a rich palette to paint from, although he is partial towards Orange and Black. Listeners can expect the full benefit of his colors on his self-produced release, DAYSTAR.

Album Description

"Songs From My Heart" is Esteban's lyrical and spontaneous interpretations of romantic popular songs that he has always felt close to. Each was recorded "live" in order to capture the feeling that so permeates Esteban's music. His "on the spot" improvisational skills learned from years of flamenco playing, combined with his exacting classical studies with Segovia, render a unique blend of heartfelt music that is pure joy to the ear. My first Esteban CD.......2006-06-02

I ordered 3 Esteban CDs and I hope the others are better than this one. Maybe I just don't like the songs he picked to play, but they came across as "contrived" and the background accompanyment sounds a bit "cheesey". If I heard the cuts before I bought the CD, I would have skipped this one!

As a guitar player for 50 years (I'm now 66) who also studied flamenco for a short time and can play some rather haltingly, I would commend Esteban's playing for what it is, way and above most guitar players, notwithstandng his car accident and all.

The negative comments that attempt to compare his playing to the few classical guitarists still capable of reaching the "classical level" are out of school and very imtemperate, as those musicians probably number less than 10, and they aren't popular with most listeners. Esteban is the epitome of an accomplished classical guitar musician who makes his music available to everyone for their listening pleasure, not for the winning of awards. He is like the Joe Pass or George Benson or Wes Montgomery of classical Spanish guitar.

I find his music and playing just plain delightful. Hats off to Esteban!!

Disappointed.......2005-12-04

I like the excitement of Esteban's music. The way he starts out with a solo intro and then builds up excitement with a good supporting band. This CD has none of that. It is just a collection of solo intros. If you want soothing background music, this is for you!

Excellent musician and music, but there are better!.......2005-10-03

Esteban is a very good musician, but by any means not as good as some of the other modern day 'Neo-Flamenco' or latin music playing guitarists. Yes, his music is touching and even passionate, but to me, there really is something lacking. He seems more a lounge musician than a serious international artist. If you like his style though, you must check out artists like Strunz & Farah, Luis Villegas, Acoustic Alchemy, or Govi, who just take it to another level. Much more passionate and technical than Esteban. Esteban is the Chevy of latin guitar, while the aforementioned are Ferraris! That said, I still applaud Esteban for his decent musicianship and his getting inexpensive but decent guitars out to the masses! Kudos to him.

Let's be honest about what Esteban is and what he isn't.

His many critics don't give him credit for making popular spanish-influenced acoustic guitar music that's accessible to the masses, helping to revitalize interest in this instrument.

He's also done an excellent job of creating an image/identity, which is just as much his commercial appeal as the music. Something that many of the "serious" spanish-fusion guitarists have unsuccessfully attempted. (Pretty amazing when you consider he grew up a "Stillers" fan in Pittsburgh.)

This latter aspect is a double-edged sword that has caused the harsh reviews from some.

Esteban's overt selling of his relationship with Segovia when the trained ear can quickly tell he was probably the Master's worst student is annoying. For example, his excess reliance on legato soloing indicates deficiencies with right hand finger picking technique. He's not a master, not even close .... he wouldn't even be allowed on stage with contemparies of acoustic-Spanish fusion music like Paco De Lucia and Al Dimeola. (Speaking of contemparies that tried and failed to make the switch to popular appeal.) Heck, he can't even compete with Jose Feliciano.

Much like the Artist, this album is comprised of both quality tracks and flat out clunkers. On the good side, his rendition of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" is particularly powerful and the Spanish standard "Malaguena" is lightly and nicely delivered. However, his limitations as a soloist are on full display on "Lady in Red" where he gets lost harmonically and technically he can't produce what he aims to, missing several notes and screaming out "beginner!" On a few other tracks there's a complete disconnect between the accompaniment and the guitar.

In the end the Dimeolas and De Lucias of the world could learn showmanship and attention to each to each note (versus cramming as many in as a possible) and Esteban should upgrade his technical skills to be more inline with them. Reality is the world is still waiting for the flamenco guitarist with limitless technical skills but a sensitivity to the fans and the music.

But that said if you're looking for reasonably good music for background that's not technically challenging enough to compete with the foreground, you can't go wrong with Esteban.

Esteban is the handsome dude "As seen on T.V." selling guitar kits (his own brand of guitar with instruction books, DVDs, etc.), and on this CD plays a collection of pop favorites, one traditional Latin American folk song, "La Paloma", and one Spanish standard, "Malagueña". Most of the tracks teeter on mediocrity, and part of the reason for this are the arrangements that back him, which sometimes don't seem to fit in with what he is playing at all, and this problem is very noticeable in the upbeat numbers. The terrific Del Shannon hit, "Runaway" for instance, has marvelous moments, and other moments that are a total mess.
He fares best with the very simple, mellow tunes, and my two favorite tracks are both by Nino Rota, "A Time for Us" (from "Romeo and Juliet"), and "Speak Softly Love" ("The Godfather"), and which make fairly decent background music.

The flowery liner notes state that these are "live" recordings, and Esteban has "on the spot improvisational skills", and goes on to tell us how "To Esteban, the Spanish guitar is like a beautiful woman" with a most lavish description. They also claim that he studied classical guitar with Andres Segovia, and had years of flamenco playing. His technique is adequate for the material, but something goes terribly wrong in practically every track on this CD, for one reason or another. The songs however are a nice selection, the sound is quite good, the foldout insert has the romance novel style liner notes and a song list with a glaring typo...a big pet peeve of mine ("Caundo" instead of "Cuando"), and total playing time is 73'26.

A Very Enjyable CD!.......2005-01-19

I don't know what's up with some the uptight, technically hung up reviews here, but ignore them. Esteban does a terriffic job playing a cross section of great tunes and he does it with style and emotion.

Who cares if he didn't write them? Frank Sinatra sang other peoples songs and did so with his own style and tempo and nobody seems to mind. I've been fortunate enough to see Esteban perform locally in Scottsdale, Arizona and he's terrific.

EVERY time I put this CD on people want to know who it is so they can buy it, relax and enjoy.

This CD is for digital surround sound and will not work without a decoder.
I have tried this CD in every type of player and it will not play. I suggest you buy a version that does not require a decoder.

Esteban...What Else Can You Say? He's Great!.......2005-03-17

I had never heard of this guy until one late night surfing the channels, I saw him on HSN. I thought he just sold guitars and wore a weird hat, but this guy can really play. I've only heard a few people say anything bad about him, but that's bound to happen when you are popular and especially if you're selling something on HSN. Excellent CD, very relaxing and inspirational. If you don't know about this guy, find out. He has a delightful story of courage and inspiration to share about he became who he is today. Highly recommend all of his music and if you're wanting to learn guitar, why not learn from the best? 5 Stars!!!

I think, and I certainly hope so that amazon.com will STOP this Fernando guy writing gibberish about Esteban. Comments like "this is not a guitar", or "Esteban plays beginner-like" hurt only amazon.com to have some insecure person and obviously Esteban heater on their sites. If you listen to Esteban just for 20 seconds you will realize how senseless it is to call him "beginner". It's just ridiculous, even for those who hate him.
I recommend all of the Esteban music to everybody. It will relax you and if you are by chance starting a guitar, motivate you to go on. Esteban is one of the best guitarists. Bravo, maestro!

I had never heard of Esteban and then my husband asked me for a guitar for his birthday this year. When the guitar came in the mail, this CD was in the box. I was curious and so played the CD. I'm hooked!!! I think he's a master guitar player and he creates a mood so skillfully. This is music that makes one feel good.

Wow! Why so vitriolic? May I say that, one day, I'd like to be just as lousy? I did not buy it for perfection; others may do better. But, I see no other of his kind, taking ten years to overcome a talent stripping accident, creating jobs somewhere in the world by offering a half-MILLION first-time (and quite playable) guitar packages with instruction, to date (watcha' reckon a lesson costs from your favorite virtuoso?), channeling the creative energy of kids away from annoying you at the mall with a skateboard. Sure, he's quite likely gotten 'well' off of his marketing, and rightfully so (oh, that's a crime, too?). Naysayers, what have you done with your life, today, and how many people did it touch in a positive way? If you demand perfection, tell me about yours. But, if you like inspiration, learn more about this guy. I enjoy the CD.

STOP! Hey before you buy this cd, let me tell you something: This is not a Spanish Guitar player, not even a Spanish like one. This guy is just a begginer-like player, he's harmonically and technicaly handicapped. Somebody has to stop this guy. Tell him the truth: You can't play! I don't know what did he do to get his contract, but when i heard this cd, this came to me: He's the William Hung of the Guitar, that maybe learned to play with the AKORDES tuition software. I have read the other reviews. All I can say is that they sound like Esteban Wannabe's who just don't have the fortitude
to stick with it so they can get there. Segovia acknowleged Esteban because Esteban is truly brilliant on the guitar. His technique is flawless. This CD is fabulous and I highly recommend it. It is well worth the money.

This CD is tremendously awesome! You will simply love it. You may also find yourself playing it over and over. Joni Lamb and the Daystar Singers are a group of talented praise and worship singers. I was hooked on them after watching them for the first time on the Daystar Network. This CD contains a mixture of soothing and upbeat songs. I guarantee these songs to grab you. My personal favorites are: You are Great, God is Here and I need You More! These are a great collection of songs for this CD.

If you never had the chance to listen to their first CD - A Time of Refreshing - you are truly missing out. The voice of Benita Arterberry on the song, "When I Think About the Lord", is totally awesome. I haven't heard anyone sing that song the way she does. You go Benita!!!!!!!

I love this worship CD!.......2005-03-30

I am borrowing this album from my friend right now, and let me tell you that it is absolutely amazing. I'm a big fan of both Hillsongs and Gospel music so this is a perfect blend of that. The worship isn't over the top, but it most definitely does not miss the mark - these are true worshippers of God. No need for yelling or repetitive 10 minute tracks. Just straight worship, from the heartfelt adoration of "You are Great," to the fun and upbeat "My Redeemer Lives," to the sincere prayer of "I Need You More."

Rare guitarist with excellent skill.......2005-08-23

Maybe someone didn't like his music or his style.

But no doubt, Esteban (Stephen Paul) is really a man with real great guitar skill and he play with feeling. Need not to mention he's a student of Andres Segovia.

I've bought other albums but not yet arrive, can't tell you other is bad or not. But I've listen to Duende for years, it's recording and performance is WORTH buy it within 0.1s without hesistate, miss this album will be your greatest regret if you really love guitar music.

One of his best!.......2005-08-21

Duende is one of my two favorite Esteban CD's. (The other is Enter The Heart.) Esteban's exceptional skill as a guitar virtuouso and composer are amply demonstrated on this CD. A mosaic of world music, "Lotus Wind" evokes images of India, while "Duende," Romanza Andaluz," and "Valse Criollo" paint pictures of Spain. "Mesopotamia" and "River of Man" weave fascinating textures. Duende is an wonderful CD that showcases Esteban's amazing talents!

Esteban (Stephan Paul) is at his best on Duende. Despite what is said in the info for this album. It was released in 1989 NOT 1969. Anyway, this is his shining debut and by far the best recorded album he has made to date.

Great sound........2007-01-31

I saw Joni's band on Daystar and really enjoyed their sound. The CD captures that same great live worship sound. Good song selection. Best tracks are #5 and #9. Definitely worth buying if you love praise and worship music.
