Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

3 out of 5 stars Rhythms Del Mundo.......2007-07-15

It's a good idea and not bad for the effort. The songs while some work very well ,the others were just a good try . I can see what they were trying to do. Anyway it's for a good purpose

5 out of 5 stars Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba.......2007-07-05

I love this CD. Every cut is good. I can clearly appreciate the original artist and the Latin beat at the same time. I am so pleased to have a CD that every cut is good and I don't have to stop what I am doing in the cafe to skip a cut when the player is on scramble.

4 out of 5 stars Great Salsa/Pop Fusion CD.......2007-07-04

The fusion of well known pop artists (ie; U2, Coldplay, etc.) and Buena Vista Social Club totally works on this great CD.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing...buy something else.......2007-06-01

This is disappointing...a few of the remakes are ok. Some cuts are intolerably poor. The overal quality is poor and it is not as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, fun CD-Rock and traditional tunes turned Latin.......2007-05-29

We love this CD and all of our guests who have heard it love it too. The latin version of Cold Play's "Clocks" seems like they should have recorded it that way from the start. You'll recognize all of the songs and enjoy the Spanish or rhymically-latin versions.

If there ever was a farewell album could make one long for a reunion, this is it. Crowed House had their own personal hegemony of the airwaves in the '80s and '90s, and their final show on the steps of Sydney's Opera Plaza in 1996 shows you exactly why. This two-CD package overachieves as a live document, capturing both the high emotion of the crowd (120,000 strong) and stoicism of the band members, except for the final two songs, which find Neil Finn with a catch in his throat, fumbling over words. The entire recording is filled with memorable moments, brimming with humanity, heart, and the group's irreverent sense of humor--from dedicating song to the full moon, to inviting former band members onstage. "A Hole in the River," the gothic tune about Finn's aunt's suicide continues to haunt, while "Something So Strong" has grown up to be a self-help anthem. Farwell to the World is engaging, smart, philosophical, and sometimes even prophetic on songs like "Weather with You," when Neil Finn cautions, "You can fight the sleep, but not the dream." --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live album full of energy and killer songs for Crowdies.......2007-07-15

Ok true confessions first--I'm a huge Neil Finn fan and also had this when it was released 10 years ago as part of the Crowded House Fanclub live releases. This release improves on the original in one way--we get two discs instead of one. I really haven't compared this to my fanclub CD (hey, it's the only fanclub I belonged to and I did**honest**for the CDs)but this does seem a bit louder with less dynamic range. Nevertheless, I'm going with the five stars here for the performances.

I can't say I've done a head-to-head of late between this and the previous single disc edition so I don't know if any overdubbing was done. If it was, they did a masterful job of hiding it--the band sounds terrific (and yes, on a great night they sounded this good--heck even on a bad night they outclassed the competition). The only new material here is a cover of the Hunter & Collector's tune "Throw Your Arms Around Me" but it's one of the few places to also get a stunning live version of "Everything Is Good For You" (which appeared on their last release as a band the "Recurring Dream" Best of set). It's also one of the few CDs in print where you can hear live versions (many of them stunning)of the tracks for their albums "Woodface" and "Together Alone". The band DID release a live EP with some of the material here but that's long out of print and probably fetching high prices on Ebay and here as well.

Even my LEAST favorite track the humorous "Italian Plastic" by the late Paul Hester is enjoyable to listen to here. Luckily for fans, the Dream isn't over as the band has since released a new album and is touring the world. Let's hope that they get back in the studio quickly as Neil's indicated that he'd like to put together another album of new material ASAP.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond great!.......2007-05-07

I have been a Crowded House / Finn Brothers fan for a long time, but this live CD is amazing. Neil Finn is such a talented and gracious musician and performer. If you are already a fan, this would be a great addition to your collection. If you are new to them, it is a great represenation of their talent and will make you want more. One of the best music purchases I have made this year.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful "Farewell".......2007-03-20

Of course, with the news that Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, and Mark Hart will be touring again with a new drummer, this isn't really a 'farewell' as it were, but for hardcore CH fans, it is, and with the recent death of drummer Paul Hester, this recording attains an added bit of ironic melancholy and increased appreciation.

This is a great double CD, and for even casual fans of the band, it is well worth purchasing. The production is fabulous, and the performances are excellent. One will find so many of the "greatest hits" ("Distant Sun", "Weather With You", "World Where You Live", "Don't Dream It's Over", and my personal favorite, "Fall At Your Feet") done well, especially "Don't Dream", the last song of the show, complete with crowd-sung chorus and deafening applause at the conclusion. But fans will also enjoy other non-single album tracks like "Whispers And Moans", "Fingers of Love", and "When You Come", songs that are terrific but didn't make the Greatest Hits cut. Also included are some elements of the personality of the band, something that separated them from the majority of bands who take themselves way too seriously. Neil adds alternate lyrics in "Into Temptation" when he realizes the crowd in front needs water; during "Sister Madly", Paul does an imitation of Tina Turner, and the songs ends with the line, "Climb every mountian...". The guys are fully enjoying this last show, and you can tell it is not just for the 100,000+ fans there and the MTV Europe audience watching it live, but for themselves as well, and this recording captures that nicely.

I will say this: I bought a VHS copy of this show a few years ago before this CD was officially released, and this recording takes out some of the in-between song banter that made the concert feel even more like a concert. But on the up-side, more songs from the show were included in this 2 CD set than on the original film, especially a few more songs with neil's brother Tim, and the Hester-penned song "Italian Plastic".

I highly recommend this release.

5 out of 5 stars The World Where They Lived.......2007-03-15

This CD has not only brilliant sound quality, but the performances are incredible. Neil's singing is as good as ever, and you definitely feel that you're there with rock and roll's greatest audience listening to what are collectively some of the best songs ever written. The beauty of a live Crowded House show is not only in the world's most beautiful instrument, Neil Finn's voice, but it's just as much in the audience participation in singing along to very cool tunes.

This is an amazing CD that will probably leave most of us wondering, gee, why didn't you make it a four-disc set?

5 out of 5 stars Were they really this good?.......2007-02-23

Yes, the Crowdies were easily the best band to come out of the '80's. I first read about them in a rave review of their 1st album in the pages of Musician magazine (circa '86), bought the c.d., and have followed their brilliant but less than prolific output ever since.

Those who are reading this review are probably somewhat familiar with the band's history (Split Enz, etc.), but one fact bears repeating for U.S. listeners: Only here were they known as one hit wonders; the rest of the world quickly figured out how good they were and the band's star rose accordingly. In fact, the Very Best of Crowded House (from '96) entered the charts at number one in both England and Australia.

This live c.d. is a welcome addition to their catalogue capturing the band in 1996 in front of 100,000+ in a perfect display of the dual professionalism and looseness of their live shows.

I can't help but recommend the DVD too. In fact if you can only plunk down for one, then get the DVD. I recommend both.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars D'Elles .......2007-07-19

Although I'm not French or can even speak French, I've been a fan of Celine's French music ever since Deux/The French Album (and of course her prior recordings). Of course since it is her native tongue, you can hear how she really puts alot of emotion and feeling into what she's singing and you "get more" of Celine when she is singing in French.

Her Deux album is argubly her most strongest French album, with the wonderful 1st time collaboration with Jean Jacques Goldman. In it she is powerful, young..totally Celine. In Sil Suffisait D'aimer, again she is working with Goldman, but there are deeper messages, more introspective a little more serious (you can even see it in the pictures on her album), but still beautiful music, somewhat masculine, and you really start to hear new ranges in her voice, and of course what I love...her little harmonies and melodies she makes when she's not singing words. In 1 Fille and 4 Types, she is more laid back and inspired truly by the desert and country music. Great music again, a little more masculine, a little more rock. In her compilation On Ne Change Pas, again classic Celine..great powerful songs and her career song Je Ne Vous Oublie Pas

In D'Elles, she is totally in her feminine perspective/voice (as evident the title), and it's more dramatic, almost as if the entire album is a soap opera or dramatic film. Sweeping music, high drama (1st two songs), tender words, the kind of music you would imagine with a wide shot of a heroine in the middle of a golden field on the top of a mountain with the wind blowing through her hair and dress and the sunset in the background (ala Belle in Beauty and the Beast).

It's beautiful music once again, and it kinda shows Celine trying different themes, and growing as a singer. Although she is always in control of her voice, she sounds like she sings with much more freedom and less restraint, less direction. She's intepreting what she feels through the different female song writers, and it seems no one is telling her how to sing the songs, she's going with her feelings. I think Celine has always wanted to be free with her music, and D'Elles seems to be her step towards that.

D'Elles is also a tribute and celebration of the female writers, authors, poets who's songs appear on the album...so if anything this is not only about Celine... this CD is truly worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Not a classic, but still lots of fun.......2007-07-19

The new French album from Celine Dion, D'Elles, is nowhere near as good as D'eux or some of her other earlier albums, but it is still a lot of fun with great tracks. The first 3 tracks are the ones most likely to be released (the first 2 have already been released as singles) with the third song, A cause, being my favorite. It's very rock and rolly, has great notes for Celine to hit, and in general, is fun to listen and sing along to. The rest of the CD has some other nice songs to sing along with but I don't think the material adds up to the greatness of D'eux. This CD is still a must-have for Celine fans such as myself, but for others I would try the tracks before I buy just to make sure that it's up your alley.

4 out of 5 stars Celine's best si D'EUX.......2007-07-08

I will comment on each track individually:

1. ET S'IL N'EN RESTAIT QU'UNE is a very good first track out of the album. I enjoy this one a great deal. It is very modern, and yet, has a flair of POUR QUE TU M'AIMES ENCORE. It reiterates the same topic. The "I-would-do-anything-for-you"-type of song. Very well written by Françoise Dorin, an author who has illustrated herself over the past 30 years in literature, and in movies as well.

2. IMMENSITE has grown on me. I enjoy this one as well. This is an interesting song written by a young author who specializes in writing on lesbian love. This is a well-crafted song.

3. I really like the beat of A CAUSE. This is a little different for a French song by Celine. Once again, Françoise Dorin wrote it. It almost sounds like a piece taken out of a book. Very well crafted as well, with a nice dance beat.

4. JE CHERCHE l'OMBRE is another nice tune written by Lise Payette, born in Verdun, France but educated in Quebec. Interesting choice of texts since she is known to be a feminist in her own right. This song is anything but. It is well-written. It is a very sensual song, overshadowed by a lot of sincerity meant to denote intimacy in the light of love vs. the strict physicial approach.

5. MES PARADIS is a nice song. The tune itself reminds me of LES DERNIERS SERONT LES PREMIERS from D'eux. It is a nice catchy song. It feels like it's been heard before. This being said, it is a nice song on the feeling of longing for her "paradise" that she is seeking.

6. LA DIVA is a great song, which I did not know what to do with originally. I always liked Maria Callas. Her voice is so pure to me. I can see why Celine admires her. The track is nice, and could be a single, based on her show on Canadian TV. Celine mentioned that she has always felt a special connection to La Callas. Maybe a movie in the works? The idea is out. She is proving on the last minute of the song, that she may have the chops. The song is about the despair that the Callas felt throughout her life, and how music rescued her from her dark moments. Celine has had a similar path whereby music has "saved" her from the dull moments of her earlier part of life, where boredom of school set in. Written by Denise Bombardier, a Canadian author.

7. FEMME COMME CHACUNE is one of the songs I like least. The intro reminds me of another song by Celine entitled CHERCHE ENCORE, which has never really been a favorite of mine. Not quite a filler, but just easy to overlook. I don't know the author. This song sounds very French for some reason.

8. SI J'ETAIS QUELQU'UN is an OK song. I don't quite know what to do with this song. Not bad, but I am just on the fence as to liking it. It is a bit dull, and contributes to the CD getting 4 stars.

9. JE NE SUIS PAS CELLE feels like one of Christine Orban. A bit tedious to read with many details. The tune fits to the lyrics, but it is quite boring, and almost depressing. I guess that's what they went for, as it works for that purpose. This reminds me of the song TU NAGES, which is a drag in and of itself (just a personal opinion). It feels like it takes ages to finish.

10. Written by a playwright, LE TEMPS QUI COMPTE reminds me of DESTIN as well. The texture of the lyrics seem to mirror the time spent since D'EUX for some reason. Pretty good soung. More upbeat.

11. LETTRE DE GEORGE SAND A ALFRED DE MUSSET is written by George Sand, a great figure of French literature from the XIX century. It sounds like it's a page of literature that is coming to life. This song, while well crafted lyrically (taken from an actual letter from the author to her lover Alfred de Musset), which means that it almost does not feel like it should be put to a tune. It is working OK though. Not a favorite of mine.

12. ON S'EST AIME A CAUSE is one of my favorite songs on the entire album. It is beautiful, and an extension of track 3 A CAUSE (written by same author). I enjoy listening this song an awful lot. Celine's voice is at its best. It is about the reason why one would fall in love, and fast-forwarding many years, and realizing that the present time requires for love to be established DESPITE many ailments that may have crept into the relationship. It really is a nice reflection on the theory of love and relationships. To me, this song seems to go with MES PARADIS, track # 5 on this album. The progression of these three songs (3,5 and 12) seem to tell a story of their own. Well done.

13. BERCEUSE (lullaby) is an OK song. It sounds like a lullaby too, which is great. Canadian-native Janette Bertrand wrote the song. She is also a comedienne. The only hang-up I have here is that it is hard for me to differentiate this tune from the DIVA song. On that song she mentions being grateful to know the Callas, and that she is the reason why she is on stage, while this one seems to be putting the stress on her life on stage because of her son. It is a bit confusing to me. I know that this is not supposed to be a book, but because the authors are so prominent, I don't seem to be able to separate the two.

So, overall, this is a very good album. My favorite tracks are 1-3, 6 and 12. The least favorite ones are 8, 9 and 11. The others are all good. I think this is a very original concept, which will prove to be another highlight in French music. I would definitely recommend it.

The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? You've heard of mind control, haven't you? --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, calming and still works after 11 years!.......2007-05-09

I bought this for my newborn daughter and she has fallen asleep to this just about every night of her life. In particular, we enjoy the 2 Brazilian songs as I am Portuguese (born there, raised here) and it's immensely enjoyable hearing songs in my native tongue as well as other languages. I have gifted this to several expectant parents and everyone loves it as much as I do. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful product.......2007-03-08

The songs on this CD are soothing and fantastic. My son loved them!

4 out of 5 stars Good for babies, but a little depressing for adults........2007-02-12

The music is all good, but several of the songs are eerily reminiscent of the Schindler's List soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2006-12-30

we used this before our first arrived (to acquaint her with the music and hopefully create a positive association for her) and played it every night as part of her bed time routine. i fell asleep to the music as well as i could hear it on the monitor from her room. i can't describe how much i loved listening to the tracks and how good i feel about the success of our nightly routine. we keep the music on the ipod for "sleepy music" while traveling in the car. my now 4 year old daughter with "request" the CD when she is tired! i often give this as a baby shower gift.

5 out of 5 stars Puts the entire family to sleep!!!!.......2006-11-14

I purchased On a Starry Night before our son was born. My husband listened to it and liked it so much that he started using it at bedtime himself. When we went into the hospital to deliver, the CD came with us. All of the nurses commented on how serene the music made our room feel. We've played it for our 2 month old son since birth. My entire family falls asleep this CD each night. It works so well, I don't know what the last few tracks sound like. This will be baby shower goft to all of my friends!!!

Most artists who appeal to adult listeners tend to settle into a comfortable niche, but Lucinda Williams refuses to play it safe. Instead, her music stings like an open wound, as she continues to strip away the protective layers from her art's emotional core. Though Williams has long been prized for the naked honesty of her music, this collection is even rawer than its predecessors. From the down-and-dirty bar-band blues of "Atonement" to the Rolling Stones-style swagger of "Bleeding Fingers" to the tricky balance of debasement and transcendence in "Ventura," Williams leaves the nerve endings of her music exposed. With the band opting for first-take immediacy rather than polish, some of the most powerful material is also the neediest, as the singer addresses lovers who have disrespected her ("Righteously") or abandoned her ("Those Three Days," "Minneapolis"). Though her attempts at rap on "Sweet Side" and "American Dream" might cause diehard fans to wince, her willingness to take creative chances reaffirms her position at the vanguard of a rootsy progressivism that transcends musical category. Simply put, there's more Patti Smith in her than there is Patsy Cline. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Classic Lucinda -- great stuff!.......2007-07-13

So many good songs... been listening to it non-stop since I got it. Reminds us that buying individual songs isn't the same as listening to an album. Especially one like this where every song flows into the next. Just perfect.

4 out of 5 stars World Without Tears..........2007-05-10

World Without Tears (2003) is different from Lucinda Williams' previous releases. Her band is simply composed of Jim Christie, Doug Pettibone, and Taras Prodaniuk this time around. This album followed Lucinda's sublime release -- the underappreciated Essence.

Our songstress handles the lead vocals, and strums along on acoustic guitar; Doug Pettibone plays electric guitars and the mandolin on two songs, Taras Prodaniuk prods the Bass, and Jim Christie tickles the drums, vox organ, and Wurlitzer.

Running times for the tracks on World Without... are more uniform than on Essence; nine of thirteen songs on this album clock in at over four minutes, rendering this record more radio friendly than her preceding album.

Long songs like Atonement and People Talkin' are more boisterous, energetic and spare than we're used to hearing from Lucinda Williams; her technically proficient band shines here, but these two songs aren't lyrically the strongest.

Dedicated fans will want to know that World Without... was recorded at Real Music Studios in Los Angeles, California, during 2003. The genius of this album lies in reduction -- fewer instruments, fewer players, stronger vocals.

Wonderful tunes like Fruits Of My Labor (Track One) borrow `sweet baby' phrases from previous hits such as Essence while highlighting pensive harmonica and purloined purple imagery evocative of early songs by the fantastic Prince.

One would think that Righteously (Track Two) wouldn't work because it features Williams singing mock rap style, but she pulls it off winningly while name dropping John Coltrane. This song has a nice erotic edge to it.

Track three -- Ventura -- is emotionally gorgeous; I'd like to hear Bonnie Raitt cover it. Real Live Bleeding Fingers (Track Four) is an old-fashioned bar song, a barn burner evoking dissolute rocker Kurt Cobain.

Everybody will like Those Three Days (Track Six) since the singers's booming voice drives home the chorus and acquiesces to a mesmerizing electric guitar solo. I didn't enjoy Atonement (Track Seven) as much, but that's my preference.

After Atonement winds down, you'll adore Sweet Side (Track Eight) which Williams purges mock rap style -- from the male point of view -- in polar opposition to track two. Sounded vaguely like early Lone Justice.

Rather than being distracted by tracks two and eight, one should focus on Minneapolis (Track Nine) -- which is lyrically complex and vibrant -- since it's more representative of the album's overall mood.

Since I'm wrapping up, I'll close by saying World Without Tears (Track Twelve) is the most melancholy song Lucinda has ever written. Lastly, the masculine stand up bass on Words Fell (Track Thirteen) is worth appreciating.

5 out of 5 stars REAL!.......2007-02-09

The very first time I ever heard Lucinda Williams, I just couldn't understand her appeal. Then my husband took me to see her live and I started to "get it". I now love all her CD's, but I especially love this one. Her honesty blows me away. She truly doesn't hold back which I love. She talks about things that are real - feelings, experiences, memories. After listening to one of her CD's you feel like she's a friend that confided her secrets to you. Each time I listen to this CD I love it just a little bit more and I hear something new. Lucinda Williams is one of the most gifted song writers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with Eva Cassidy.......2007-03-20

I own every one of Eva Cassidy's CDs and this one is my favorite. I fell in love with her voice about 2 years ago when I heard her rendition of "Over the Rainbow", which still brings me to tears every time I hear it. However, when I heard the version "Waly, Waly" on this CD, I sobbed!! Eva Cassidy had such a way of bringing the heart of any song right up to the surface. She sang from her "gut" and this CD showcases that quality, as well as her humility. If you've never heard any of her music, I encourage you wholeheartedly to go for this CD, you will NOT regret it! She was phenomenal and even though she's gone, she still touches us.

5 out of 5 stars Speechless.......2005-04-09

This album contains selections from every style of music and Eva masters all of them. Her voice is the most amazing instrument...at times powerful, at times soft and sweet. I am saddened to think that our world has lost someone so talented so prematurely. I listen to her CD's over and over and never get tired of them. I am in awe.

5 out of 5 stars NO one compares.......2004-12-26

I purchased every last one of Eva's CD's after hearing her sing "Imagine" just less than a year ago... Any other artist who even tries to sing a song that Eva already recorded sounds like a cheap imitation of what was already perfected by Eva. Eva has it all! You cannot go wrong by purchasing ANY recordings of Eva Cassidy, who has the ability to move you to levels you never thought possible with the sound of her magical voice. WOW!

4 out of 5 stars A great collection, although no previously unreleased tracks.......2004-08-26

People yet to discover the amazing voice of Eva Cassidy will want this album, perhaps after purchasing the first compilation "Songbird". However, I do believe this is a better compilation because it contains more of my personal favourites. One listen of her rendition of Simon and Garfunkel's "Kathy's SOng" will turn you into an Eva Cassidy fan. "Waly, Waly" is simply beautiful, with a haunting touch. Most fans will own all of the other albums, so buying this will be unnecessary as it contains all previously released material.

Tracks on this collection include:

1. What a Wonderful World (from Live At Blues Alley)
2. Kathy's Song (From Time After Time)
3. Say Goodbye (from Eva By Heart)
4. Anniversary Song (from Time After Time)
5. How Can I Keep From Singing? (from Eva By Heart)6. You Take My Breath Away (from American Tune)

8. Penny to My Name (from Time After Time)
9. You've Changed (from Imagine)
10. It Doesn't Matter Anymore (from Imagine)
11. Waly Waly (from Eva By Heart)

I would recommend purchasing "Live at Blues Alley" for those just new to Eva Cassidy.

5 out of 5 stars The superb Eva Cassidy one more time.......2004-08-06

This is a great companion CD to 'Songbird'. If you can only purchase a limited number of Eva Cassidy recordings you can't go wrong with this selection of songs. (Of course every song she sings is great!!) If you already own the entire collection this one is still a nice addition to keep in your car or with your portable CD player. If you've never heard Eva Cassidy you're in for a rare treat when you listen to an Eva Cassidy song for the first time. You will be hooked!

Amazon.com essential recording

From her early days in the bathhouses to her rise as the star of her own concert film, Bette Midler has always brought a campy playfulness to her performances. Experience the Divine focuses on her radio hits for the bulk of its resources, although the kicky "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is here. Midler's voice easily adapts itself to the material she's performing: "When a Man Loves a Woman" is charged with a raw sensuality whereas "In My Life," is as tender as a lullaby. The recent standards are here, "From a Distance" and "Wind Beneath My Wings," along with her star-making turn, "The Rose." Whether she's handling Cole Porter ("Miss Otis Regrets") or the Beatles, Bette Midler's voice is dynamic and expressive, according to the needs of the song. This astute ability to interpret without always going for the kill makes her versions of her chosen material some of the best ever recorded. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits-Experience the Divine.......2007-01-10

Midler is Divine, one of a handful of singers that can get you off the couch and singing like you think you have a voice. She gets you hopping in this CD and intertwines some of her greatest ballads with her most popular rock tunes. Its a sweet rollercoaster ride that you don't want to end.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Devine by Ms. Devine Herself.......2006-08-29

This album of Bette Midler's Greatest Hits is just that, plain and simple. You cannot play it enough, as she is truly one of the most talented singers / actress / and gifted person on the face of the earth. Rarely do I feel the emotion of anyone's performance in voice that is as moving as from her. This album gives you just a taste of the range of talent this true star really has!

4 out of 5 stars Experience the Divine.......2006-02-25

Although I bought the album particularly for 3 of my favorite Bette Midler songs, I was also treated to a few other good ones.

Bette Midler is one of those singers that you really can't compare to anyone else. She is just so HER on whatever project she does and we just love HER!!

A wonderful and unique artist and a true star; this collection shows off Bette Midler's talents. Personally I miss "Beast of
burden" from her "No Frills"-album. The song was quite a hit
in Europe. It's about time for a volume 2 of this lady's
greatest -she has recorded several great songs since this
compilation came out.

4 out of 5 stars Howie Day - Stop All The World Now.......2007-01-31

Well, a lot of you looking at this album may only know Howie Day for his one song 'Collide'(Well thats who anyone in England who's heard of Howie Day knows him for!!). You might be thinking 'Is it worth buying the album for just the one song?' Well I can tell you I was in the same position. I took the gamble and brought the album because I hate singles!
Well after listening to the album, starting for the very beginning I found the gamble had worked. Songs such as 'She Says' are beautifully written and sound good if not better than 'Collide'. Throughout the Album Howie Day desplays his lyrical and musical ability, the music gets better as you go through the album.
Those of you who are into 'Lifehouse', 'Switchfoot' and to an extent '3 Doors Down' and 'Goo Goo Dolls', this is really a must have, but those who are still confused - BUY the album because you get a lot more for your moneys worth than just getting the single.
Listening to it now, its one you can't get bored of because its not an artist they overplaye on the radio consistently. I'm looking up to a follow up on this album!!

5 out of 5 stars I've changed my mind - this cd's amazing.......2007-01-25

I made a review on his earlier cd, before I heard this one, saying that "Australia" and the "Madrigals EP" both were so much better than this one - that on this one, he had sold out. But i was pleasantly surprised when I randomly picked this cd up in a CD lot on ebay - it was amazing. I was reluctant to let go of my previous assumptions on Howie, but even with the full band and not as much acoustic playing (I mean, "She Says" on the "Australia" CD is acoustic - and then he remade it on this one. Both are great, if you think about it.), but even so, Howie's a showstopper!! His technique and singing style are unmatched. PICK AUSTRALIA UP FIRST, THOUGH. Both CDs rock, but get a sense of his growth first. He's a versatile performer and that's one of the best things about him. CHECK HIS MUSIC OUT - NOW. You won't be sorry. :)

5 out of 5 stars A must have..........2006-10-28

Great great cd, I mean it is a must have. Howie shows his great class and this clearly puts him in a league of his own in this genre of music. I simply can't have enough of his music.

Book Description

"Kirtan is the calling, the crying, the reaching across infinite space—and digging into the heart's deepest well—to touch and be touched by the Divine Presence," teaches world music pioneer Jai Uttal. On Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant, Jai guides listeners through the practice of Kirtan—singing the many names of God and Goddess—an essential part of Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion. This sacred music form is for all people; there are no experts, nor beginners, and the practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Listeners join Jai Uttal to explore: the power of ancient Sanskrit syllables in chant to invoke the Divine, how to open the voice and learn to love the sound that comes from our bodies, more than two hours of music recorded by Jai Uttal to commune with the Divine through sacred chant, and the path of Bhakti and Kirtan, the journey of surrender, and much more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "A Joyful Noise".......2007-05-16

When I heard an interview on NPR with this artist,Jai Uttal, and music from his CD I couldn't get it out of my mind. It is "a joyful noise" that lifts the spirit and energizes. His very personal explanation of Kirtan on Track 2 gives one an understanding of the spiritual basis of the music and even if it is not a path that you might follow you can't help but be swept up in the chanting. I play it in the car on days when I feel stressed and it removes all that chatter in my head and helps me arrive at my destination uplifted and in the present. His interpretation of the ancient chants using non traditional instruments and renditions is appealing and engaging. P.S.It is a 2 disc set so you can have one at home and one in the car!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Ecstatic As I Like To Be.......2007-04-22

Although a double CD set, both disks pose a problem to this reviewer's taste. Each contains a rather lengthy exposition by the artist on the nature of Bhakti (Devotional) Yoga sandwiched in the program. Jai Uttal has a very pleasant speaking voice & the material was helpful, even inspiring--but do you really want to hear it all over again everytime you play either discs? I know I don't. The musical material is engaging, but not particularly special. It is authentic mantra, but without the technical brilliance of many such CDs (see links below). I don't regret buying it--again, BUT it won't become a treasured favorite. I don't think it would turn-on people who weren't mantra fanatics like me or a real fan of the artist--or a devotee of Kirtan.

5 out of 5 stars Devotional music at its sweetest.......2007-03-15

This 2-CD set is one of the best introductions to contemporary kirtan I've come across (and I own many kirtan CDs). Aside from the wonderful spoken section, where Jai Uttal chats informally about what kirtan is, the selection of songs is truly heartwarming. I love both CDs, but find I listen over and over again particularly to the second one for its variety of moods and styles. Jai's voice really cuts deep and brings out the intensity and authenticity of his own devotion to the path of music and the heart.

In addition, the musicianship of everyone featured on this set is superb and adds so much to the listening experience. It is hard not to sing along and feel the blessings flow, even if you are not a singer...and that is exactly the point.

5 out of 5 stars Kirtan: The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant by jai Uttal.......2007-03-09

Wonderful kirtan, by a great artist.

5 out of 5 stars How can I express my joy?.......2007-03-06

I was a big fan of Krishna Das and I still am. A couple of weeks ago, for the first time in my life, I heard Jai Uttal's 'Radha Rani ki Jai, Maha Rani ki Jai' - Track # 4 on Disc 2. Like all good music does to my soul, I was so enchanted that I played the same track again and again till I lost count. I wasted no time in getting both the discs and my favorites are as follows:
Disc 1: Track # 3 'Radha Govinda'
Disc 2: Track # 1 'Durga Pahimam', Track # 3 'Jaya Radha', Track # 4 'Radha Rani'
Originally coming from India and being a big proponent of 'Bhakthi Yoga' (Path of devotion and Divine love for God), I can say from the depths of my heart that Jai Uttal sings with such soulful melody and love, it takes my breath away every single time I listen to the tracks mentioned above. It surprises me so much that while I cannot listen to certain types of music even once leave alone repeating my listening experience, the kind of music that Jai Uttal, Krishna Das and others produce, I can listen for a lifetime and experience that joy again and again.

If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12

I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.

3 out of 5 stars Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30

I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.

5 out of 5 stars No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01

I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18

Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!
