Editorial Reviews Like the Victim's Family without the funk, or Botch without the aggro metal, the Ruby Doe crank out intricate tunes with twisting riffs and churning tempos that coax you forward even as they slap you in yer face-which you'll be doing yourself, howlin' "What ass did they pull those insane riffs outta?" (See the opening cut, "Mons Veneris," or the seething "Flat Spin," for proof.) The real meat (er, tofu, kids) here is in the coaxing; no matter how 'out' the riffs may get, they're built on vice-tight, compelling tunes that, for all their intensity, practice finesse and restraint to a T (dig the reluctant pop of "She's Gasoline" and the catchy "Integument"). And it all comes to a head on the amazing "Trampion," a careening roller-coaster of a song that'll have you reaching for the fire extinguisher. The guys in Ruby Doe have been cutting their teeth for years, even acting as the backing band for Jana McCall's excellent (albeit gloomy) solo Up Records LP. But "The Flame and the Fury" ain't no hush-hush affair.
The Flame and the Fury
Drawer B Online Zine
If you're looking for a relentless yet melodic assault on the ears in the vein of Karp or Mule, then The Ruby Doe is your band.
Backfire magazine
Their sound is churning, jarring, very intense, sort of arty, sort of metallic, but also
catchy.
Album Description
What's that crazy noise that tears through yer ears when the nitrous hits yer addled brain? That high-pitched whine that winds up, up, up like tightening wires until something's just gotta snap? Words can't do it justice, but the stressed guitar whine that cracks open the Ruby Doe's "The Flame and the Fury" comes close. Then BOOM, off go the Doe, snappin' like yer damn-fool brain on all that laughing gas.
