songs of love and empire
Editorial Reviews
Chris Carter, UBL
I love records like this. You know, the kind of disc that just blows you away like out of nowhere.
Paul Andersen, Consumable Online, June 1, 2000
Quite simply, Ritter has crafted a set piece that is stunning from the opening to the bell-ringing close.
Album Description
"songs of love and empire" is the solo debut by Julie Ritter, singer/songwriter and co-founder of the band Mary's Danish. This CD is a soulful, blues-based alternative rock record of beautiful, moody slow pieces, up-tempo punk-pop and winding, mournful rock and roll. It is an emotional and intimate CD with a textural production, powerful vocals and buzzy guitars. Fans of Mary's Danish will recognize Julie's well-crafted songs, intelligent storytelling and vocal skill, but on this recording, she takes them all a step further.

Je Ne T'Aime Pas .......2006-03-02
if i had to pick a favorite song on this cd, that would be the one...i heard this one more than the others. " one life to live," is superb...she did all these songs in one take ! and the passion and romance is undeniable...i had never listened to cabaret before this. i became a fan.
Superb musicianship!.......2002-01-19
This CD is thoroughly enjoyable. O'Callaghan's passionate interpretations of these cabaret/parlour style songs are never less than convincing in their colourful delivery. My particular favorite's are two of the Weill numbers: "Je ne t'aime pas", which is so full of heart-wrenching angst, and "Youkali", because it is so rarely heard. The lesser known works of Poulenc and Satie are also each sparkling little treasures. The musicians all seem to "gel" together beautifully, and one can imagine that they had a really great time recording this disc together. Fantastic artistry!
An excellent recording by a fast-rising cabaret star.......1998-11-04
This first CD by the talented soprano Patricia O'Callaghan is truly excellent. Ms. O'Callaghan has the rare ability to mesmerize the listener through her intuitive and expressive vocal instrument. Her voice and vocal style are unique..she imitates no one. This is the sign of a true artist. The selections, ranging from Poulenc to Weill to a rarely heard gem by George Gershwin, are performed with meticulous attention to detail. Nuances, articulation of the text combined with superb vocal technique are very evident. If you haven't yet purchased Youkali, put it on your definite "to do" list tomorrow!!!

beautiful.......2006-11-13
Beautiful voice, beautiful songs. Recordings from an era we can be nostalgic about. Singers should listen to it: how to project a voice and how to pronunciate.
Peter Dawson--Songs of Sea and Empire.......2000-06-27
If you are a Peter Dawson devotee, as I am, this is an essential album to have. It includes many items I had never heard the great man sing, as well as some of his greatest song renditions. No Peter Dawson collection is complete without "We Saw the Sea", "On the Road to Mandelay", "The Fleet's not in Port Very Long", and "Saddle Your Blues to a Wild Mustang". Among the titles that were new to me that I liked were "The Unacccompanied Organist", and some of the Australian Bush Songs. Mr. Dawson is quite an acquired taste for an American. He was at his best singing songs of the British Empire glories. Once you have heard him at his best though, singing his definitive version of "Waltzing Matilda" or any of about 30 selections that could be described as his "greatest hits", I think if you have any feeling for they type of music he performed, you will be hooked. Mr. Dawson may be the finest singer that Americans have never heard of. Only one record, that of 'Matilda', backed by the "Mauri Poi Song", was ever released in the United States in his lifetime (1882-1961). Luckily, more of his material is coming to CD, and music listeners are the better for it. For years, I was restricted to an occasional Gilbert and Sullivan aria that happened to be in a collection, or the occasional '78 that happened to have made it across the ocean somehow. This CD was a good addition to my Dawson collection, and I recommend it.

WONDERFUL MUSIC.......2001-06-27
.... This is a GREAT album, very seriously recommended. ...this wonderful CD will soothe and calm. To those who are looking for something new and VERY class-- CHECK THIS OUT. The songs on this CD are just wonderful, achingly beautiful, full of perfect little moments which just might put this release into your personal top-five listing.
If you loved Mary's Danish.......2001-03-17
If you loved Mary's Danish, like I did, you will love this CD! This takes off where the Danish left off. One of the best CD's our there today.
Puts to shame 90 percent of the major label releases.......2001-02-26
On Songs of Love and Empire, former Mary's Danish vocalist Julie Ritter puts to shame 90 percent of the major label releases with the best album you haven't heard this year. Ritter's first solo album of songs (she did release a spoken-word recording of her poetry a few years ago) is confident, mature, diverse, and, oh, so enticing.
Ritter returns to the hard-hitting alterna-pop of her Mary's Danish days on the opening track, "Bed," as well as on "Aeroplane," a song that with a major-label push would be on your favorite radio station constantly.
Songs ... goes well beyond her Mary's work, though. "Cry Baby Cry" and, in particular, "Play My Favorite Song," feature slow, grinding blues vocals sultry enough to heat up a monk.
Arguably the album's finest track is the piano-based story, "Jesus of New York." Ritter shows off her narrative skills, as well as her lovely, lilting vocals, on the seductive tale of a one-night stand.
As a whole, 1999 was a fairly dismal year for music, with adult listeners being bombarded with teenage bubble-gum pop and the same one-note testosterone rock. However, Songs of Love and Empire offers a more than worthwhile alternative to the monotony of this year in music.

not all its cracked up to be.......2001-02-17
From reading the reviews and hearing she's been compared to Carrie Akre of Goodness and the Rockfords, I expected Julie Ritter to be something pretty cool. I was very dissapointed however by the lack of anything good about this album. First of all, her voice seems inexperienced and lacking. Secondly, the music seems choppy and not well put together....almost like a VERY ametuer Veruca Salt type of thing, but worse. Dont expect this album to stir up anything in you except maybe a headache.
