Amazon.com essential recording
Call them the Nine Inch Nails of punk. Like NIN, the Offspring preserve the essential ingredients of their chosen genre--guitars grinding out three chords, shouted vocals, and plenty of vitriol--and layer them over a melodic base that packs considerable popular appeal. The singles from Smash, the Offspring's breakthrough album, still receive considerable radio airplay: "Gotta Get Away," "Come Out and Play," and "Self Esteem." With these and Smash's 11 other tracks, the band chronicles the adolescent experience with clarity and surprisingly incisive wit. That pretty much describes all of their albums, but this is the one to get. It's got more shape than their earlier material and isn't as disturbingly poppy as their more recent recordings; it's the perfect blend of riffs and rage. --Genevieve Williams --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Yes, they (along with Green Day) finally brought skate-rock into the world of John Q. Mallrat, but the Offspring were hardly spring chickens at the time of this breakthrough album's release. They'd been slogging away since 1987, a span that allowed them to amass all the clever tricks showcased here, most notably the Latino-rap/moshpit-riff mega-hit "Come Out and Play." Just about every track on the disc (the band's third, if you were counting) keeps that careful balance between... read more --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

If Green Day are the '90s punk equivalent of the Beatles, and Rancid its Rolling Stones, the Offspring might be its Monkees--remembered for nothing more important than simple, indelible pop. --David Sprague
Customer Reviews:
good, but way too overrated.......2007-07-23
This is a good album, yes, but it is very overrated. Alot of Offspring fans like to defend this album and trash their new stuff without giving any reasons as to why or any constructive criticism of their new stuff. They are just telling me that they're just trying to look cool if they can't say anything better than "smash rulez amaricana/conspiracy of one/splinter SUCK". Well there are later Offspring releases that I like more than this, like Conspiracy of One. Don't like my opinion? Comment on my review, and let's see how well you can debate.
Anyways, I like this album, but I skip a few songs, while on albums like Conspiracy of One or Ixnay on the Hombre I can listen to the whole thing through.
Good album, but not a classic when it comes to what I think.
Timeless.......2007-04-06
Arguably one of the most influential rock albums of the 90s by one of the best bands. Smash, easily Offspring's best album to date came out at a time when Nirvana's Nevermind and Green Day's Dookie albums rocked the radio. Definitely all classics, worthy of 5 stars. Smash is raw energy in every one of Dexters vocals and Noodles' guitar riffs. Relentless fast paced hard hitting tracks that can get you pumped for anything you do, not a weak song on the cd. A** kickers like Bad Habit (the whole thing is about road rage, you dont hear that much), the popular Self Esteem, and my favorite It'll Be A Long Time. Through and through an iconic masterpiece. If you dont have this cd, go get it, NO EXCEPTIONS. Anyways "it's time to relax and you know what that means a glass of wine your favorite easy chair and ofcourse this compact disc playing on your home stereo".
AWESOME ALBUM, AWESOME BAND.......2007-02-20
this album is genius. beautifully crafted, good guitar tunes, but dexter's whine is very common in this album, and it can get annoying, especially in self esteem. but that song still rocks. so does come out and play. so does bad habit. so does genocide. so does what happened to you. and many many others.
classic.......2007-02-14
My first c.d. i ever bought when i was [...].......and till this day at 25--- i still pop this cd in my car and enjoy every song on it....and its one of those albums that everyone knows and loves amongst my friends....if you dont have it...go and order it cause its a classic...
Solid skate punk,but.......2007-01-10
anyone notice that "Gotta Get Away"'s verse parts are sung in the same way as Nirvana's "About a Girl" verse parts? I heard it on the radio today, and I wanted to sing "About a girl" but of course, Offspring's lyrics were different.

Customer Reviews:
excellent cd.......2007-02-27
I got this cd primarily for two songs, All Star and Walking on the Sun. I tend to keep listening to my favorites, but the other songs are good too. Overall, a good CD that I will enjoy more with time.
Quite good :-).......2006-11-10
These guys have an old sounding but at the same time new twist on music that is quite refreshing after hearing all the hip hop, rap and grunge music out there.
Better then ever!.......2006-01-29
I've always loved Smash mouth, and this CD is the way to go for all fans. Or even if you're starting out, this is the one to get as it has several tracks on it you can't find on their other cds. such as Mystery Man and Pacific coast party. This is a good cd to get to sample all their works.
Beside's it has several of my favorite songs on it, such as Walking on the sun, When the morning comes, better do it right ( a song you can't find anywhere else except for the Grinch cd) and Waste. I'm just disappointed they didn't come out with this cd sooner before I spent money on buying soundtracks just for one single smash mouth song.
This is a good cd .......2005-11-27
I love this cd it's pretty good my fav song is allstar
They Are All Stars.......2005-10-01
The 1990's really brought out the waves of pure feel-good party bands. For acts like The Offspring with Pretty Fly For A White Guy, and of course Sugar Ray featuring Mark McGrath and their upbeat track Fly, they have really been the staples of the feel good pop side of music. Smash Mouth is also no acception. During their glory days, mid-90's, and the early 2000's, the group has been really the leaders with making great party songs for everybody. They started right at the top, and still haven't lost their way. Yet, while there are some who have forgotten them, the songs definitely live on.
Smash Mouth's 2005 All Star Smash Hits, is a packaged collection of their biggest tracks from their era in the top 40. The collection actually delivers very well with remastering and compiling some of their best tracks including songs for movies like Clockstoppers, Mystery Men and Shrek. While some of those films died in vein, the music for those ill-fated flicks actually outlasted as great guilty pleasures 2 to 1. The collection includes great party songs like their first big hit, Walkin' On The Sun, their biggest hit All Star, the Neil Diamond cover of I'm A Believer, the quirky Then The Morning Comes, and Pacific Coast Party. While the album delivers well, it does overlook only one song, the tropical-styled You Are My Number One which was used in ads for Chrysler a couple of years ago.
Although it is just a shame many people don't seem to remember Smash Mouth as much anymore. Nevertheless, All Star Smash Hits is absolutely a must have for anybody who loves great guilty pleasure songs. They are still walkin' on the sun.

Rally Round The Steel Pulse Band With Irie Reggae Music.......2006-03-02
This cd is great!
Even thou it is missing songs like Hansworth Revolution, Wild Goose Chase, Prediction, Prodigal Son, and Klu Klux Klan, the cd makes it worth having with songs like the awesome: Rally Round, Rally Round Instrumental, the funky, Blues Dance Raid, the mellow, Your House, and the classic, Roller Skates, will make you want to keep playing this cd over and over!
This English Band can throw down when it comes to playing Reggae. Talent just lives in this band. From Rootsy music to Rub-A-Dub Music, this band can jam. Steel Pulse can delivery a message through their music that will leave you spellbound and wanting more.
Yeah Mon! I Love this Cd. A "Make You Wanna Dance" cd that also gives you a long lasting irie vibe! Ya kno'
Add this one to your reggae collection! You won't regret it.
Steel Pulse is currently on tour and I suggest that anyone that has not seen them in concert, go and check these brothers out. They ALWAYS put on a great show!!!

A Great Compilation from an Underrated Band.......2005-11-29
I don't think any reggae act ever got closer to sounding as Wailer as Steel Pulse did. Many songs sound so Bob that it is not even funny. This complilation tends to focus on more of the dance-hall stuff they did. Quite often these "Best Of" albums are poorly put together with questionable choices and painful omissions, but this one is solid. Good stuff if you want to get a good overview of what Steel Pulse is about.

Customer Reviews:
The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12
The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!
A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26
One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.
Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.
The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.
A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29
"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.
All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.
Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.
The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!
I Love it !.......2006-09-06
I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.
The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!
The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13
The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Expounding on the theme from their hit "Walking on the Sun" (from the multiplatinum Fush Yu Mang), the verbose songs on Astro Lounge are filled with examinations of societal ills, personal woes, and other disappointments entailed in this thing known as Humanity. Yes, the album would seem heavy-handed were not the overriding sentiments filtered through Smash Mouth's "Hey, dude, let's party!" brand of musical optimism. Ranging from reggae to lounge to psychedelia to surfer rock to a sort of punk-a-go-go, Smash Mouth's influences have little in common with one another save for one important exception--they all evoke images of personal freedom and defiance of oppression, reminding us that, gee, fighting the Man can actually be raucous good fun! It's been a long time since a band with this much commercial potential could say something thought-provoking and get the party going. On "All Star," Steve Harwell sings, "Only shooting stars break the mold." A fitting prophecy for this outstanding alterna-pop album. --Beth Massa
Customer Reviews:
Light summertime pop (4.5/5).......2007-07-09
Like many people of my generation, I spent countless hours of my adolescent years listening to my "Astro Lounge" CD through a boombox or Discman headphones. And while many of us who loved this album so dearly in 1999 have "grown up," I still hold this album in very high esteem. Even looking back, "Astro Lounge" is a piece of pure pop genius. The album is full of perfectly constructed pop songs, and often evoking the fun sounds of an earlier musical era. Steve Harwell's often ironic lyrics can come off as a little corny at times, yet remain good-natured even when speaking of hardships and depression. But before all else, "Astro Lounge" is pure fun, and the party theme maintains throughout for the most part. They take their influences from a lot of places, and it makes for an entertaining ride. The space-age electronica of "Who's There" has little in common with the reggae-ska of "Road Man," the pumping hard rock of "Defeat You," or the hip hop of "Home." Smash Mouth is fun in the purest musical form, but the songwriting is clever, catchy, and at times ingenious. Even looking back, I highly recommend "Astro Lounge" to all.
The album begins with "Who's There," an electronic-pop ode to aliens, just for fun. "Diggin' Your Scene" is a bullhorn-delivered song with a driving beat, a very memorable tune. "I Just Wanna See" is slow and laidback, I like this song too. On "Waste," Harwell takes a depressed look at life from someone with nothing going on, it's the album's most somber moment. This gives way to the classic single "All Star," one of the most unforgettable songs of the nineties. From the ironic lines to the hook that everybody knows, this song was awesome and still is. "Satellite" exudes a little Latin influence, but also comes off as nostalgic in an effective, seductive style. "Radio" is a humorous straight-rock song, a highlight, and "Stoned" is a cleverly produced stoner's anthem anchored by a repetitive organ line. This song doesn't promote drug use so much as talk of its overall effects, and the music fits the song really well. The second single "Then the Morning Comes" is another beautifully constructed pop rock song with funny lyricism and great songwriting and production, with the classic Smash Mouth sound. "Road Man" is the band's infamous foray into reggae territory, personally I love this song. "Fallen Horses" is a slower song that picks up towards the end, and "Defeat You" is one of the most unlikely highlights, a hard rocker that displays some great guitar playing. "Come On Come On" is my absolute favorite here, an extremely catchy, organ-heavy pop anthem. The aforementioned "Home" borders on hip hop territory, but the irony of the lyrics has Smash Mouth's signature stamp. A cover of the well-known "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" closes the tracklist.
While it certainly won't be remembered as one of the best rock albums of the 90s, "Astro Lounge" was a well constructed, consistent pop album that spawned multiple hits and created pure entertainment for thousands. Even eight years later, it remains as fun a listen as it did in 1999, and I suggest a purchase to any fans of the singles.
This isn't too bad.......2006-11-24
I used to listen to this CD alot back when I was in the fourth and fifth grades. I still listen to this CD once in a while, but I don't listen to this one as much as I used to. Favorite songs include: Then the morning comes, I'm still digging your scene, All Star, who's there, as well as others. I didn't have very many favorites with this CD. When I do listen to this, I sometimes find myself singing along with some of my old favorites.
Much more than just "All Star".......2006-06-21
Smash Mouth has made a great living kicking out a stream of radio friendly pop hits for the better part of 10 years. I've never really been a huge fan of mainstream or radio friendly music. I don't have a good reason, I'm usually drawn to lesser known artist or types of music that don't get huge airplay.
Now we come to Smash Mouth's "Astro Lounge," with their retro rock, peppered with surf and pop overtones. There were times in 1999 or 2000 when I thought the local pop radio station only had three tunes: Santana's "Smooth," Lenny Kravits "Fly Away," and Smash Mouth's "All Star." So needless to say, I grew really sick of the song. It's not Smash Mouth's fault some radio stations seemed to have lost a few shipments of hit singles that summer. Actually, the overplaying "All Star" made me take a closer look at some of the other tracks on the disc.
The true gems on this record are the lesser known more mellow tracks like "Waste," "I Just Wanna See," and "Fallen Horses." I really love the opening guitar riff in "Defeat You."
I had the opportunity to see Smash Mouth Live a few years back, and they play just like their "feel good, life of the party" reputation. They never seem too take themselves too seriously, and honestly looked like they where enjoying themselves.
Still, once Smash Mouth makes its eventual fade from popular music, they should be able to carve out a loyal fan base that they can entertain for years to come.
If you like Smashmouth, this cd {KICKS A**!}.......2006-02-03
This is the ulltimate Smashmouth cd! There's quite a few hits on it. Of course if you dont like Smashmouth......... Well then you wont buy it and you wouldnt be on this site. Anyway, the booklet inside the cover is really cool. I has a silver woman in a bikini, with like orange hair. Pretty freaky stuff. Anyway if you like Smashmouth get this FREAKING cd!
Review by Michael Peters. Thanks for reading!
A CD Influenced by Early Rock.......2006-01-18
The best thing about Smash Mouth is that, as much as they love music, they never take themselves too seriously. Their sound ranges from sixties party to contemporary pop, with a heavy influence of early rock. Their lyrics are often satiric or downright humorous, with undercurrents of more serious concerns.
"Diggin' Your Scene" evokes the late sixties with a beat that one can imagine woman in vinyl mini-skirt dancing to while their stoned guys stand mesmerized by the colored lights. The lyrics poke fun at the sixties lingo while describing a guy's obsession with a dangerous woman. The following "I Just Wanna See" has the same kind of fun sound with hippy philosophy: "Doctors and lawyers race for the ball/And I don't even wanna understand it all/I just wanna see." "Then The Morning Comes" nods to the Beach Boys and to the surfer movies of the sixties; you can almost see the montage of skinny hippies and girls in polka dot bikini running toward the ocean. Not all the tracks are retro (except for the fact that the album was released in 1999). The pop chart favorite "All Star" is a catchy tune about embracing the life that fame brings. Ironically, "Stoned" sounds less retro than one would expect. The group's foray in reggae ("Road Man") is less successful than the other tracks.
"Astro Lounge" is rock/pop for those who miss the sixties and seventies -- or wish they had lived through them. -- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

when will there be a retrospective that does eric justice?.......2007-06-25
This is the Wreckless Eric's third album plus the compilation from his first two albums originally released in the US in 1979 as Whole Wide World. According to Eric's website the album plus compilatiion were first released together in 1980. My gripe is that the compilation takes many more tracks from the second of Eric's releases than the first. The second album is much 'cleaner' and more 'professional' than the first and lacks much of the first's glorious idiosyncracy. In a word, Eric's first album was in the great tradition of English eccentricity--plus it had some great rock'n'roll on it and songs with wonderful hooks. Certainly the compilation includes the stand-outs 'Reconnez Cherie' and 'Whole Wide World' but the almost equally good, but weirder, 'Telephoning Home', 'Personal Hygiene', 'Grown Ups' and 'Waxworks' were left off, as was Eric's version of Ian Dury's 'Rough Kids'.
Don't get me wrong, it's great to have so much Wreckless Eric available on CD at last but, please, let's treat this great English eccentric rock'n'roller to the quality retrospective he deserves!

I liked it then .......2006-06-30
Before the popular song was on the radio I got this cd and went and watched them and sugar ray before they were anything, if smash mouth kept being a punk band they would rock they sold out hard core but this album minus walking on the sun realy does rock
One of the most underrated CD's ever..........2006-05-18
This Cd, when it was first released, was carried entirely by "Walkin' on the Sun" which doomed Smash Mouth to forever sing songs the same way, thinking that it would help their image. That's rather unfortunate because the other songs on this CD such as "Heave-Ho", "Padrino", and my personal favorite "Nervous in the Alley" have an entirely different sound and feel. This CD deserves a second glance so instead of just scoffing at it because it's smash mouth, listen to the samples. This is the only CD from Smash Mouth with and Explicit Lyrics sticker, because after this they went soft. This is good music, check it out.
Only two good songs..........2005-11-16
There are only two good songs on this C.D.! Don't get it, it is a waste of money.
Great album. Not watered-down pop as you would expect........2005-11-12
The tracks on this album, except for maybe "Let's Rock", which is just a Tenacious D-like filler, are all great.
Walkin' On the Sun is the most popular, but is personally my least favourite; It's a good song, but is more pop-y and shows less tallent then any other song on the album.
The music style is a mixture of ska and rock, but most old time punk fans will like most of the songs on the album a lot.
I give this album 5 stars for a reason. It's the stepping stones of what could have been a great band.
Smash Mouth did not evolve when Astro Lounge was released. They de-volved. Astro lounge was pop, and nothing but it. Smash Mouth was in awe of the popularity of Walkin' On The Sun and sold out in the blink of an eye.
Shame on Smash Mouth.
Buy this album, and don't buy any other ones by Smash Mouth. Pretend this is their only one; You'll only be dissapointed otherwise.
(Music-wise, this album gets an 8.5/10 in my book. Some of the chord progressions in Padrino and Disconnect the Dots are pure genius)
12 tracks of fun........2005-05-31
This debut from Smash Mouth is too silly for me to call ska, but to edgy/alternative to simply be pop. So I just call it "skop". "Walking On The Sun" is the high point here, and probably still their biggest hit, but the rest is good at the least. Other tracks I really like are "The Fonz", "Let's Rock", "Padrino", and the humorous "Pet Names". The cover of "Why Can't We Be Friends" was another single I believe. It's a great album to put on when you need a boost of energy. "Astro Lounge" is a good album also, and went for a more mainstream sound. However at this point, you may just want to hold out for the enevitable "Greatest Hits".

After scoring one of the most infectious chart hits of the '90s with their debut's "Walkin' in the Sun," San Jose's Smash Mouth further refined their retrograde cocktail of ska/surf/rock/pop influences via the follow-up hit "All Star" and a raft of mainstream soundtrack appearances that virtually guaranteed them a critical backlash. But on this, their first album on their own Beautiful Bomb label, SM apologize for none it. If anything, they've further burnished their pop sheen, expanding the back-to-the-future philosophy that's the cornerstone of their sound a bit in the bargain. Penned by frontman Steve Harwell, the single "The Story of My Life" injects some Rock of the '80s jitters into the mix, while the band variously evokes Merseybeat innocence on "Girl Like You" and suffuses "So Insane" with some greasy, melodic funk. If the B-52s echoes of "Getaway Car" underscore SM's penchant for sometimes pushing their pop-cloning gambit too far, songs like the bouncy title track and the bittersweet ballad "Right Side, Wrong Bed" argue that they're content to forge inviting, party-ready rock confections-- a feat they've accomplished again here with typically insouciant charm. --Jerry McCulley

AMAZING.......2007-06-24
I personally never had a problem with Smash Mouth moving to Movie Soundtracks. I loved them since Fush Yu Mang but OMGSH, listening to their new album, i am shocked. What an AMAZING comeback. I truly have to hand it to them. Amazing guys! ;)
Smash Mouth's true comeback. Don't hit the beach without it........2007-05-14
A more honest title for Smash Mouth's first album in their return to unsigned status may be "Hey, Major Labels, if You're Going to Pigeonhole Us, Do It Right". Because a title like "Summer Girl" just gives the impression Greg Camp continued to ride the hollow sunny vibe that washed out their 2003 release "Get the Picture?" into obscurity and eventually oblivion with another set of cranked-out too-calm-to-be-rock-but-too-peppy-for-ambiance numbers. This is not the case, because Smash Mouth knows that there's more to being a "summer band" than making a soundtrack for sunbathing. There's barbecues, campfires, partying, and--this can not be overstated enough--macking on potential summer flings.
So that's the M.O. for Greg, Steve, Paul and newcomer Jason Sutter this time out (although former drummer Michael Urbano leaves his fingerprints on some of the beats and production work here). While any lesser band would backpedal and try to regain some rock-group-cred by pretending Astro Lounge and its successors never happened. Smash Mouth, however, are well aware they already betrayed the hipsters beyond apology, and instead simply pick up where their fans' expectations for that album left off: a varied--but positively rockin'--collection of songs that sound good anywhere... but reach their full potential behind a pair of cool-looking shades between May and August with a cool drink in one hand and the sunblock in the other. So rarely does a band recognize where they are and, concurrently, where they've been. Even rarer is a band that can fit it all into one coherent sound. This album's got the grit of Fush Yu Mang, the variety and songcraft of Astro Lounge, the poppy charm of their self-titled and the feel-good summer vibe of Picture--the main difference is now it's got substance courtesy of the previous three elements. Take the title track, with its lazy-beach-days organ riff, but when the hook comes in with all its self-assuredly charming naiveté, you realize you can stop holding your breath; Smash Mouth's found their footing once again. Quality Control--the surprising but essential middle finger to Clear Channel--feels like a walk through the dilapidated Astro Lounge with the quasi-creepy space-rock that ran wild on that album and remained an undercurrent. And then there's Right Side, Wrong Bed, the first acoustic tune since I Just Wanna See that doesn't feel obligatory (despite its being the only one here).
What's the most surprising is how well Smash Mouth--formerly a common example of the kind of band that gets funding as a result of the laziness and greed of record execs with their frequent soundtrack contributions and by-the-numbers covers--make the transition to a full-fledged indie band, selling this record off of their own "Beautiful Bomb" label. In fact, the only element of this process they don't have down yet is the timing; they couldn't possibly have meant to release this sunny record in September. But it's an easily forgivable offense, mainly just because it's a big relief to have Smash Mouth back doing what they do best: pop that's so much fun it seems other bands are afraid to make it.
GOOD SMASH MOUTH STYLE.......2007-04-03
If you know Smash Mouth this album will satisfy you, even if it's not the best. But every cd is a completely different music... and you'll love it anyway!
Fantastic CD.......2007-03-19
This CD is great, they really get back to their earlier sound and I'm so glad!
Great but too soft.......2007-02-20
Some time ago Smash Mouth was about to publish "Old habits" where they said they would return to their original rock style, but in the end Summer Girl appeared and I see that this spirit died. However I love this album and specially "Girl like you" and "The crawl" but with the original sound it would be better.

Smash Mouth make no apologies for keeping the party going on their fourth album. There they again turn out a lighthearted mix of surf music, reggae lite, and beach anthems, even going so far as to graft a snippet of the Beach Boy's "Good Vibrations" onto "Hot" just to make sure we don't miss the point that they are the preeminent summer band of their time. But they're at their best when they're anthropomorphizing their cars ("Hot") or singing the praises of driving in the fast lane, ("105") as they turn up the heat on the subversive-sounding Farfisa organ, conjuring up the greasy spirit of ? & the Mysterians. They're less appealing when they're reminiscing about the awkwardness of a school dance on "Seventh Grade Dance" or extolling mall culture. --Jaan Uhelszki

vintage smash mouth.......2007-02-17
I've always loved Smash Mouth, and this album is no exception. Their music doesn't sound like much else in my music library, but I like that. Smash Mouth is what I pop in when I want to listen to fun, catchy tunes that don't take themselves too seriously. Smash Mouth has definitely perfected the fun-in-the-sun, beach-rock music. I like Get The Picture even more than any of their other albums. It just seems more polished and energetic than a lot of their other stuff. Don't get me wrong; I love all their albums, but everybody has a favorite, right? This is it for me. Another reason I love this album so much is that my 7-year old daughter loves it, too. It's music we can listen to together. She asks me to play it all the time. She knows the words to the opening track, 'Hang On', by heart, and I get a kick out of hearing her sing it. In fact, she loves the album so much that I got her her own copy to listen to whenever she wants. In short, this is a fun album by a fun band who make no apologies for their style of music. Kudos to Smash Mouth and here's wishing them much success and longevity.
The Good Old Days.......2006-02-14
Smashmouth was once my all time favorite band. Then around a couple years ago I was introduced to a certain band called Led Zeppelin by my dad, and I quickly became more interested in classic rock, and eventually heavy metal and alternative rock, and pretty much stopped listening to Smashmouth all together. Recently I was going through a bunch of my old CD's (Good Charlotte, Nickeback, Sugar Ray, UGH) and I managed to dig up this album. And I decided "you know what, maybe I'll keep this". So I listend to it.
Yes, although I didn't realize this until recently, the music is kinda mediocre, the songwriting is on the level with something any 8 year old could write about summer and stuff, yet, the album just makes you feel really good, it's almost like the fact that the songwriting is mediocre doesn't mean anything, now for me, this album is particuarly special...
When I bought this album, I was at the all time height of my happiness. I was 12, or maybe I was 11, doesn't matter, I was at that age were everything is set in stone and seems right before everything starts to got down during your teen years. That summer I went to Orlando, Florida for the first time ever and stayed in a buetiful hotel called the Gaylord Palms (yes, the name is weird), everything there was sunny and Florida-ish, just like the whole trip was. I had bought the album like a week earlier, and I absolutly loved it at the time, so naturally I bought my walkman with me to Florida, and whenever I got a minute to myself I listend to it, the music would fit in with my enviornment perfectly, so sunny, so innocent...
Now that I am at the point where I have gone as far as begging to listen to old school Death Metal, Smash Mouth's 'Get the Picture' album provides an alternative to the mostly darker music I prefer to listen to these days. They just bring back good memories. That's all I have to say, it may be mediocre, but it's good enough for me, and I'm glad I rediscovered this band and this album.
The Good-Yet-Maybe-Too-Slow Cd.......2004-12-27
I don't regret buying this cd, yet I wish the overall tempo was a bit faster. The first track "Hang On" is, in my opinion, the best song I have ever heard in my life. Yet being the first song, it served to set my expectations a tinsy bit high for the rest of the album. The semi-sluggish songs like Looking for a Wall, 7th Grade Dance and especially Space Man slow down the cd's momentum. This album doesn't produce that same energy-boost that I still get from listening to Astro Lounge. Nevertheless, the rest of the cd is great; worthy of the SmashMouth name. Track one, Hang On, rocks!
okay cd.......2004-12-06
different from there first 3 albums.
still very godd
you should still buy this
make another cd!!!!
I think I got the CLOUDED picture.......2004-07-29
It seems like I'm always the person writing the first three-star review for an album. But anyway, I was surprised to come across this Smash Mouth album from last year, because I didn't even know it existed. I listened to the album, and it turned out to be one of those albums that you start out listening to and then eventually get caught up doing something else.
I'm not necessarily saying Get the Picture is bad, but it's just not that interesting. For one thing, there definitely aren't any standout songs to the likes of "All Star", "Then the Morning Comes", "Walkin' On the Sun", or even "Can't Get Enough of You Baby". And another problem is that a lot of the songs on here sound too much alike, almost as if the only difference between the songs is the lyrics. This is especially evidenced by the unnecessary remix of the Neil Diamond-penned "You Are My Number One", which doesn't sound any different from the original version.
There are also a couple of lyrical missteps to be found ("Hot" is the opposite of that). This album is really for diehard Smash Mouth fans only, so if you're not one, you might want to pass this one by.

It's not encouraging that only one of the four new songs on this 1999 greatest-hits package, arriving after a layoff of more than a year, was cowritten by Raul Malo. But we come not to bury the Mavericks' future, but to praise their past. They're the strongest argument that the change in Nashville in the '90s hasn't all been for the worst. Whether the songs lean toward country or early-'60s pop-rock, they invariably have a good feel, good melody, good hooks. They ring simple and from the heart, without guile or pretense. The musicians are invariably smart, stylish, and sympathetic. Their chops are undeniable, but the ensemble playing makes it all work, and the soloists never upstage the songs or Malo's unforgettable voice. Finally, for all the talk about the Mavericks' Latino-country fusion, it's really more pan-Caribbean than strictly Latino. This is the most festive-sounding country music ever. --John Morthland

All In One.......2006-01-29
If you are unfamiliar with the music of The Mavericks, this is the ideal cd to check out. The Mavericks have released numerous cds but this particular arrangement gives you a feel of their variety. Eight of the songs on this cd are compiled from other cds. The four additional ones fit right in. Terrific remake of the Tremoloes "Here Comes My Baby". My favorite Mavericks song, "Pizziricco", is available only on this cd.
Great band..great alternative country.......2004-01-03
Love the Mavericks...this is a great CD. Though I must admit that I don't like all the songs by them, but their 'mixed-genre' and their alternative styles of country music are as attractive as it gets, not to mention ..HIS voice! My personal favourite is "Things I Cannot Change", which is not included in all their other greatest hits CDs, such as the '20th Century Masters' version...which is disappointing. This album also includes other catchy hits such as "Here Comes the Rain" and "I Should Have Been True". I may have not learned to adore most of their songs yet, but those 'few' favourites that I like, have already earned them as one of my top 5 favourite country artists/groups. And those 'few' songs are not only good, they are just plainly some of the best!
Let The Good Times Roll.......2001-12-24
While I'm writting this, I'm listening to Things I Cannot Change.I just can't stop listening to it. It gets you, like all (I mean all) Mavericks songs. Ironically, it wasn't written by Raul Malo (actually, only one out of the 4 new songs in this compilation was). But it could've been. It has his signature, and only the Mavericks could have done it. What about the other songs? Yes, cause, after all it's a compilation! That reminds me a review I read long ago about Great Days, John Prine's Rhyno compilation. At one point, the reviwer said that the customer would regret buying it, cause it'd make him wanting to buy all the albuns. The same thing would apply to Mavericks if it wasn't for those new songs. Don't try to label the Mavericks. They make great songs, for all occasions I must say, and you have that sort of feeling of being brought back to the 50's in a time capsule. Those good days. Unfortunatelly, these are strange days, where Garth Brooks (just to mention the most pathetic) sells millions of something I can only describe as....well, never mind. You can fill in the blanck. Cheers, and let the good times roll. Mavericks still doing SWELL.
Buck Owens meets Jimmy Buffett.......2001-06-22
After hearing "Dance the Night Away" at a baseball game, I set out on my quest to find this band. I snapped up this CD as soon as I found out it was the Mavericks and was amazed at the depth and breadth of the music on the CD. Mostly upbeat with a 60's retro-country style but somehow feeling new with strong latin beats and horns. Bottom line is an amazing mix of songs that are hard to categorize but easy to enjoy. This has quickly become one of my all-time favorite CD's, often listened to from grilling in the back yard to keeping me company on road trips. You won't be disappointed!
Great Music......Great Songs.......2001-06-13
If you like the Mavericks, or just love music with a beat, you will love this album! It's one of those rare albums were I like or love EVERY song. I usually have to burn my own CDs because most commercial CDs only have 1 to 3 songs I like.....but this Marvericks album is the exception.
