Little Creatures
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Having spent the early '80s in a giddy expansion of the sound and scale of their studio recordings and concerts, Talking Heads come full circle with this 1985 album, retracting to the core quartet and restoring a focus on David Byrne's knotty songs. Arriving in the wake of the fevered rhythms of Speaking in Tongues and Stop Making Sense, Little Creatures's new material sounds freshly lyrical, remarkably concise, even subdued, but there's the usual whimsy--the levitating heroine of the jangling, punchy opener, "And She Was," the cracked child-rearing advice of "Stay Up Late," and the galloping, anthemic reminder that we're on the "Road to Nowhere." --Sam Sutherland --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
When David Byrne Went Solo, He Lost All The Good Harmonies.......2007-05-08
This album is beautiful because of the vocal harmonies provided by Tina Weymouth. She was a perfect counterpart to David Byrne's odd voice. When he went solo, he lost all of this.
Hands down, my favorite song on the album is Road To Nowhere. The vocal harmonies are delicious and the song reminds me of the awesome video that they created for the song.
"Little Creatures": Memorable, great pop from 'Heads........2006-12-24
I actually came across this album a couple years ago, but at the time I only really payed attention to the big hit, "And She Was." Then I checked it out again, and realized that each of these songs is catchy and solid. Sure, it's not as quirky or goofy as moments in older releases, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have greatness. It does. The album especially has a good album-ending punch with "Television Man" and "Road to Nowhere." "Road" was actually pretty unconventional compared to the remainder of the album even though it was one of the hits from the album. And yes, David Byrne sings more mid-range here. He actually does sound British at points, like in the chorus of "Creatures of Love." Quirky lyrics like "I've seen sex and I think it's okay" and "I wanna make him stay up all night" make the album memorable. It may not be an elitist favorite but it still connects to younger people, including me, a fan who isn't even 20 yet.
Only half the songs are great.......2006-12-14
This is an important piece but not 100% good. I only liked 4 songs.
Grand kids.......2006-11-10
Well my first Grand child is 5 months old and needs some good music to listen to........."Baby, Baby please let me hold you I wanna keep him up all night!" I want kids to know about the Talking Heads as their songs served me well raising my Grandsons father He still remembers David Bryne in the Big Suit on Stop Making Sense.
Take you there Take you there.......2006-08-04
I am instantly transported back to 1985. Snappy intelligent pop from a great band.

Album Description
Formed in the mid-'70s by art school friends David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth-and ex-Modern Lover Jerry Harrison-Talking Heads transcended their humble roots in NYC's CBGB-centric punk scene to emerge as one of the most artistically adventurous and influential bands ever. Their visionary, polyrhthmic sound fused rock, funk and punk with world beasts, avant-garde minimalism, pure pop genius and more. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the band's masterpieces are celebrated in Rhino's deluxe DualDisc upgrade of their catalogue, continuing now with their final four albums together.
Customer Reviews:
Difficulties with DualDisc.......2007-03-01
The one star is for the technology, not the content or sound. Boy, did I have problems with this disc (as to a lesser extent I did with the other DualDiscs). Of the five CD players in my house, this disc worked on only one of them, a newer Sony multidisc player. It did not play correctly on either my computer cd-roms, including the usually reliable Plextor (only six months old). Only my work computer allowed me to play and rip the cd correctly. I then ripped the music to a new cd-r and it plays just fine everywhere. Keep trying. It shouldn't be this way, but it is. The quality of the remastering does make up for the frustration though.
SCRATCHED AND GOUGED DISCS; BAD HANDLING AT THE PRESSING PLANT!.......2006-07-14
I have had an infuriating experience with Warner Music Group lasting a year, first, over the Rhino "Brick" box, and now the individual T-Heads DualDisc titles. My problem is physical damage to the discs, unnecessarily caused by obvious careless handling & packaging at the pressing plant.
In the "Brick", the unique white jewel cases come gouged and scratched, and the discs in both the Brick and individually-packaged titles, have fingerprints, smears, scratches, and pits.
This began last year when I purchased the "Brick" upon release. When I opened the set, every jewel case was damaged. These cases have a solid white rear panel, and can't be commercially replaced. They are not individually shrink-wrapped (which would eliminate the problem), and are obviously forcefully shoved into the box set's plastic outer shell at the plant, hence the damage.
It was worse inside each jewel case: All of the discs literally looked like they were used. Several were so badly artifacted they couldn't be read in any player or drive.
So, following web site direction, I e-mailed "Dr. Rhino". I received a reply, which directed me to return the set for replacement. As this is an expensive item, that entailed going to the Post Office to buy Insurance & Delivery Confirmation at my own cost. Annoyed, I decided to wait a few months, reasoning that perhaps the first production batch was bad and they would sell through. I stood in line at the USPS for 45 minutes, mailed it and waited. Six weeks later, the replacement showed up, carelessly packed into a crushed box, and the entire set was in worse shape than the first one. I e-mailed again, didn't get an answer for 2 months, and when I did, it was "send it back again"! The audacity of that response was pretty amazing: Why would I keep wasting my money and time to cycle their defective product?
So, I contacted the CD store where I purchased the original set. All the TH titles had been released individually, so the store manager & I decided we would change out the box for the separate titles, and he would return the bad ones.
I just received those yesterday: In five of the eight titles, all the same surface-damage artifacts. Several digipaks had their plastic disc retaining spindles broken with shards floating around inside. Also, inside each digipak, there is a 3.5"-square paper "DualDisc" tutorial insert. In some of the digipaks, it was tossed on top of the disc, where it rubs against the disc, an additional cause of surface damage.
So, the store manager is going to continuously order in each individual title and open them, looking for virgin discs. He is going to return all the defective discs, and repeat the process going until he finds five clean discs. Which is pathetic.
I've been thru three complete sets in one year, which means you are almost certainly going to run into this problem with your purchase. So, when you buy the Brick or any of the individual titles, please do not accept & settle for damaged product. Send it back to Amazon, e-mail Rhino, do whatever you have to do to get what you paid a lot of money for.
This would have never happened, or would have certainly been quickly corrected, when Messrs. Foos & Bronson, who founded Rhino, were in charge. Unfortunately, in 1998, Rhino was swallowed whole and "WEA-fied" by the odious Warner Music Group, where CEO Edgar Bronfman is obviously far more interested in extolling the virtues of DRM than he is in running a business that can deliver quality.
Maybe you wonder where you are..........2006-03-10
"Little Creature" is perhaps the Talking Heads most pop sounding album. The songs are shorter, the music is simpler and the hooks are in every song. But, there's something missing. I don't particularly care for "Give Me Back My Name" or "Creatures Of Love" and "Walk It Down" is questionable. The best tracks are "Road To Nowhere", "And She Was", "Stay Up Late" and "Television Man" with "The Lady Don't Mind" and "Perfect World" coming in second. The digital remastering is excellent and on the cd side the bonus tracks are actually interesting like the early version of "Road To Nowhere". The early version of "And She Was" is pretty much the same as the final product. The extended version of "Television Man" is just what it says and nothing special.
Unfortunately, this album doesn't lend itself to 5.1 surround. There's nothing instrumentally to fill in the void. It's much better in stereo on the cd side I think. The photos are okay and the videos for "And She Was" and "Road To Nowhere" are also okay. No lyrics are included and as with the other albums you get Jerry Harrison's take on remastering the album.
All in all, a good, but not great album.
Decent, but lacking an edge........2006-02-22
After their debut album, the Talking Heads began building music of excess-- extra musicians, layered instrumental arrangement, polyrhythms, and so on, driven on by David Byrne's sort of all-accepting view of music and in part fueled by Brian Eno's production wizardry. After an album that was more electronic then organic ("Speaking in Tongues"), the Talking Heads did a complete about face with "Little Creatures", presenting an album of essentially stripped down pop music.
Now granted, stripped down pop is not a bad thing-- it's just that the band appears to have surrendered their edge along with their heavy production. While the music manages to reclaim a bit of that timeless quality that made the first four Talking Heads albums so great, the music is lacking. From my perspective, I suspect it's because it's a lot more restrained-- the instrumental arrangements are a lot less edgy and Byrne's vocals fall in a comfortable middle range tenor rather than his usual higher, tense vocal.
Truthfully, none of it is BAD-- it's all pretty enough pop music ("Perfect World"), and the reflections on children on sweet and often quite clever-- albeit goofy ("Creatures of Love", "Stay Up Late"), and certainly there's no question that opener "And She Was" was destined to be a hit-- it's a great piece with a fantastic hook and a great vocal harmony on the chorus. It's just that most of the pieces are pretty much undistinguished ("Walk it Down"), and the Talking Heads were never about undistinguished songs.
The dualdisc reissue remasters the album in both stereo (CD side) and 5.1 (DVD), and it sounds great, the sonic upgrade is fantastic. Both sides also include bonus tracks-- two "early versions" and an extended remix b-side on the CD side and a pair of music videos on the DVD side.
Trutfully, had a band other than Talking Heads put this out, I'd probably rate this higher, but the bar was set pretty high by "Fear of Music" and "Remain in Light".
fantastic re-issue of a great album..........2006-02-19
I highly recommend all the TH re-releases. they sound amazing in 5.1 surround and the music itself is both creative and memorable in this age of drum machine/obscenity rap and turn-up-the-amps-and-scream alt. rock. No modern band even comes close to what the TH did from 77-89 and these re-issues prove that.

Outstanding Collection of Classical Music for Home.......2004-01-26
This is an outstanding collection of classical music for the home, regardless of age. We own two of the three CD's in this collection seperately, and they are excellent.
The "songs" were selected from excellent previously made recordings from the vast Phillips classical music catalog. The sound quality, selection and performances are excellent.
The songs selected are especially good for very young children. They are brilliant and pleasant, and they are not too loud or heavy. They are great for playing at home. Highly recommended!
Brain Boosters for babies.......2001-04-14

Having spent the early '80s in a giddy expansion of the sound and scale of their studio recordings and concerts, Talking Heads come full circle with this 1985 album, retracting to the core quartet and restoring a focus on David Byrne's knotty songs. Arriving in the wake of the fevered rhythms of Speaking in Tongues and Stop Making Sense, Little Creatures's new material sounds freshly lyrical, remarkably concise, even subdued, but there's the usual whimsy--the levitating heroine of the jangling, punchy opener, "And She Was," the cracked child-rearing advice of "Stay Up Late," and the galloping, anthemic reminder that we're on the "Road to Nowhere." --Sam Sutherland
