Days of Wine & Roses
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A large part of rock's pleasures come from the artful buildup of tension and its subsequent, joyful release. Impeccable Los Angeles guitar band the Dream Syndicate had mastered this dramatic formula so well by the time of this, their debut long player, that they soon abandoned it in favor of much less satisfying attempts at subtlety. The Dream Syndicate were heralded in their day as part of the neo-psychedelic Paisley Underground scene. But they had more in common with New York's Television (for mighty guitar-interplay rave-ups) or poetic punk bands like X and the Flesh Eaters (for dark-side-of-the-street, edgy subject matter). Sure, Steve Wynn and mates were also influenced by the Velvets, Neil Young, and the Doors. But the coolest thing they did was to graft the slashing, jagged, jammy guitar lines and drowsy sexuality from the best classic rock with the fast-paced and ironic, devil-may-care sensibility of postmodern punk--a sound that years later would be called indie rock. --Mike McGonigal --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Florida's brilliant singer-songwriter Sam Beam expands Iron & Wine from solo project to a gaggle of friends and family on slide guitar, percussion, and backing vocals on his second album. Fans need not worry--the hushed immediacy and rich melodies remain the focus--but new flavors abound. For instance, the strange "Cinder And Smoke" sounds like a collaboration (with banjos of course) between America, Robert Wyatt and Low. Meanwhile, "On Your Wings," "Free Until They Cut Me Down," and "Teeth in the Grass" showcase a brooding, earthy, Southern-rock-on-laudanum side that the band had previously only demonstrated in concert. It's rare when an artist who's become known for bedroom recordings makes the transition to the studio to produce work that's better--Daniel Johnston, Lou Barlow, and Liz Phair all made their defining moments crouched above a cassette recorder at home. But Beam is the exception to the rule, as he has easily bested himself on the second Iron & Wine album. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
Listening to Our Endless Numbered Days makes plain Sam's deft touch with words and melody; one that allows him to turn out stories about love, loss, faith, or the lack of it that are at once personal and universal, set to music that is sweetly haunting and timeless.

What "country" music should be........2007-06-02
Most would probably not label Iron & Wine as country music, yet to me their music fits that title better than most artists that are labeled as such. Not only the lyrics, but the atmosphere of the music overall just perfectly illustrates walking barefoot down a country road, or sitting on the porch at sunset with a glass of lemonade. This really just sounds like the country, and even though I live in the big city/suburbs, this album just really takes me there, in a way that stuff like Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw definitely do not.
The sole mastermind of Iron & Wine is Samuel Beam, an unassuming fellow with an extremely simple, yet extremely beautiful approach to music. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, his wispy vocals, and the occasional banjo, Beam comes off very much like what Nick Drake might have sounded like, had he grown up in the rural south. The feel overall is somewhat similar to Drake, but with a warmer, more down-home kind of vibe. There's also a great deal of Simon and Garfunkel influence there as well, most evident on songs like "Love and Some Verses" and "Each Coming Night". However, despite all these comparisons, there's really nothing quite like this.
Musically, this is just the perfect album to relax to. It's extremely mellow and laid-back throughout, and the closest it comes to "rocking" is on "Free Until They Cut Me Down", which is still pretty laid-back. The melodies are catchy and memorable, and the musicianship, while simple, is top-notch. Perhaps my favorite song here is the mesmerizing "Cinder and Smoke", which actually took a few listens to really grow on me. It's not as readily ear-catching as most of the rest, but it's really beautiful, with its female backing vocals, and odd hypnotic chanting outro. You might know "Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Naked As We Came" from the Dennis Quaid movie "In Good Company", which are both excellent as well (the latter being the most Nick Drake-sounding song here). Really though, every song here is great, and distinctive unto itself. The only bad thing about this album is that it's over much too soon.
So, whether you're from the country, or you're surrounded by concrete and steel, Iron & Wine will take you to a rural paradise from which you'll never want to leave.
Mediation in the fields.......2007-05-22
Sam Beam makes intimately personal music that is oddly impersonal. While these bittersweet songs often ring from universal themes, I sometimes feel like they were straight out of my mind. That is a really neat trick, considering that this genre of folk has a tendency for navel gazing. To that extent, the second CD from Beam's Iron and Wine ranks with the likes of Elliot Smith and the late Nick Drake. These are songs that get inside of your head and stay there.
While that won't certainly be to everyone's taste (a few of my friends rate this kind of music as barely above the level of Dentist Office Muzak), the ambiance of Beam's Southern stoicism is like a contemplative walk through a field of high grass. There are songs of love and death ("Sodom South Georgia" and "Free Until They Cut Me Down") simple life and love ("Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Passing Afternoon") set to guitar, banjo and Dobro, all sung in Beam's hushed and melodious voice. Like Ray LaMontagne has in the past couple of years (or even Leonard Cohen before them), Beam is writing deeply poetic songs that are just begging to be covered or placed in a movie soundtrack to offer context.
Recommended for fans of Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Ray LaMontagne, Will Oldham and Bonnie Prince Billie.
Defining "the sublime".......2007-03-30
If you've ever wondered what the definition of "the sublime" is, listen to "Passing Afternoon," the last track on this perfect album.
I can't write a definition of "the sublime."
But I know that it's achieved in the last 30 seconds of that song.
Alternative Folk.......2007-01-23
Great cd for those of you folk fans who like a twist. Quiet, moody and slightly eclectic. I was pleasantly surprised. Interesting lyrics, good songwriting, and vocals that are pleasing to the ear. A great cd for any collection.

Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20
A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy
Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13
This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

Fabulous!.......2007-06-03
Who doesn't love the songs of Johnny Mercer? This version, played by the incomparable Beegie Adair, is one of my favourites to play in the car because it features such fabulous sing along songs such as Days of Wine and Roses; Something's Got to Give; Accentuate the Positive; That Old Black Magic and nine others which absolutely demand that you sing along with them, and, with such marvellous accompaniment, makes everyone sound like a star! I can personally guarantee that you won't be disappointed when you add this CD to your collection.
BLISS.......2006-12-27
Just play her music on your day off while sipping a cocktail before dinner. It will definitely help you get back to that good place after a hectic week. The Johnny Mercer collection is every bit as good as the others, I have yet to find one cd of hers I don't like, I just wonder why they are so hard to get? I've yet to see her music in stores and even Amazon is a lengthy wait, but definitely worth it.
Wine and Roses CD Great .......2006-10-27
I've had this CD for over a year and it still remains one of my favorites. Truly well done.
Definitely among the short list of great jazz pianists.......2006-07-18
Reading through some other comments, I'd like to throw in my own three cents. Beegie Adair should indeed be considered among the short list of great jazz pianists. Her recordings are one thing. Here LIVE PERFORMANCES are quite another.
On Days of Wine & Roses, Beegie Adair and her trio present the great Johnny Mercer songs of romance in a, yes, "romantic" and "easy on the ears" format. Intentionally created for dinners, candlelight moments, and those oh-so-grand times of canoodling with your heartmate.
This in no way dismisses her from inclusion among Bill Evans, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan, Gene Harris, et al. Still a sceptic? Go see her live concerts. I've attended dozens of them, and I have every single recording she has made (23 to date).
Again, her recordings are great, no doubt. Her live performances are beyond great. Hear for yourself.
Moon River Magnifique!.......2005-08-19
Beegie Adair certainly does justice to Johnny Mercer's music - her interpretations are all just right! Mr. Mercer would have been proud!

A double deal!.......2006-02-23
Two non-compilation albums on one compact disc is an awesome double deal. Again,Columbia Records re-released vintage material recorded by Andy Williams. DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES,written or co-written by the late great Henry Mancini sounds so beautiful and in fact,I love the cover by Ray Conniff and his singers. CAN'T GET USED TO LOSING YOU was a Top 20 hit for Williams in 1963. Williams' cover of I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANSISCO was made famous by his Columbia labelmate Tony Bennett(Bennett still records on Columbia today). The other songs are great.
From Big Band to Bossa Nova Cool.......2001-03-03
As this intriguing 2-on-1 pairing shows, Andy Williams is more than an easy-listening balladeer. "Days of Wine and Roses and Other TV Requests" finds Williams adroitly tackling an array of musical styles showcased on his '60s NBC variety series. He captures jazzy, big band exuberance on splashy charts like "Falling in Love with Love" and "It's a Most Unusual Day." There's a frenetic, death-defyingly complex version of "You Are My Sunshine," featuring Williams in triple-tracked vocal harmony. The melancholy title cut, number two hit single "Can't Get Used to Losing You," and sentimental TV show closer, "May Each Day," all became Williams standards. This album sailed the charts for more than a year, perched at the number one spot for four months in 1963.
"In the Arms of Love" is an exceptional 1966 release. The first half features romantic ballads (including the Henry Mancini-penned title track) set against lush, string-filled backdrops -- perfect for the Williams purr. But the real gems of this album are the last six tracks, which get delightful bossa nova and samba treatments that compliment Andy's ultra-cool vocals perfectly. The congas on "A Man and a Woman" are a knockout, as is Dave Grusin's chic, uptempo arrangement of "All Through the Night." Because Williams' light touch is so well suited to this material, it is unfortunate that he did not devote an entire album to Brazilian-influenced material, as Sinatra did with Antonio Carlos Jobim (Williams and Jobim did record two Jobim tunes for Andy's 1966 "The Shadow of Your Smile" LP).
A SOMEWHAT ANTICIPATED RELEASE..........2001-02-23
Seems like two great companies are playing both ends from the middle; Sony UK and Collectables. Either company can be praised for their restoration of the original tapes, as the sound quality is second to none. Obviously Sony UK restores original liner notes, making for a more attractive package. However, this is one case where they can't put out a duplicate package; (Honey / Happy Heart, Call Me Irresponsible / My Fair Lady have been released as "twofers" by both companies) Sony UK already used "DAYS" on another two-fer. That package was great. True, most of the songs on the "DAYS" sides are a little overblown production numbers (culled from Williams' hugely successful variety TV show of the 60's) but remember, it's Andy Williams, and that's good music any time. Now the second half of this CD, the "IN THE ARMS OF LOVE" sides is a MUCH different story. I personally lobbied the good people at Collectable Records for two years to at least investigate getting this album put on CD. Thankfully, they have done just that. (Being the music fan I am, I like to think I had something to do with this!) Whether that is the case or not, most of these songs have not been released on CD anywhere before, including the sensuously gorgeous reading of "AND WE WERE LOVERS", which has long been a favorite of mine. Andy's arrangement of this Leslie Bricusse theme frames his voice perfectly. A classic Andy Williams song that merits buying this CD on its own, dare I say. The remainder of the sides are old standards that have been done many times by many people, but here they are as only Andy can do them. His "REMEMBER" by the great Irving Berlin, Cole Porter's "ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT", and even the title track (although not an evergreen, per se) "IN THE ARMS OF LOVE" are all fantastic. Worth a listen; a definite buy for collectors.
Williams latest release is uneven.......2001-01-25
Andy Williams can be the best singer ever when his material is on target, but in this twofer, the singer's opening tracks are so off ther mark that it hurts to listen. After listening to the Days of Wine and Roses, one has to wonder how this became Andy's best-selling album. Except for the title track, Can't Get Used to Losing You and May Each Day, this CD blares with over-produced overaccompanied renditions of classic tunes that finds Williams yelling at the top of his lungs to stay above the din. Especially disappointing Falling In Love Again, You Are My Sunshine, When You're Smiling and Exactly Like You, which contains an insipid chorus yelling out "Yeh, Yeh, Yeh." These are tracks you'll want to skip over. But Williams redeems himself with the second album, In The Arms of Love. Everything is well done and the orchestrations are classic Williams. Especially good is the samba-inspired So Nice, Pretty Butterfly, A Man and A Woman.

The Days of Wine and Wine.......2007-06-23
In the early 80's there were a lot of interesting bands from L.A.: The Three O'Clock, The Gun Club, Green on Red, The Plimsouls, The Go Gos. I remember seeing Steve Wynn and Dream Syndicate, and they just struck me as wanting so badly to be Velvet Underground, and Wynn was a Lou Reed wannabe. They got signed and had a big producer spend around 100 thou recording them, and I guess this was the result.
The big bucks producer should have informed them that "The Days of Wine and Roses" was already a song title. Sure, it was the title of a movie, and the phrase was from a poem, but Henry Mancinni wrote a song, a great song, and it was built around a lydian flat seventh chord, really a progressive harmony characteristic of early 60's jazz and pop. Why couldn't Wynn have thought of his own song title?
In San Francisco we had a much better band of Velvet Underground wannabes, and they called their song The Days of Wine and Wine. It was aware of the previous title, but didn't just repeat it, but gave it a subtle twist that threw it into a whole different batch of Sangria. Who has time for roses?
That band was called X-Tal, and they never had a big budget album, but even with sub par equipment, they wiped the floor with Dream Syndicate.
Would you write a song called "I've Got You Under My Skin" about a rash? Or "A Love Supreme" about a buritto? Sure Cyndi Lauper did write a song called "Time After Time," but then Miles Davis did a cover of it, so that was OK. Two good songs called "Time After Time." And Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" doesn't diminish the one Willie Nelson wrote for Patsy Cline, or vice versa.
I will forgive the egregious transgression of "Days of Wine and Roses" by Steve Wynn for one reason: because he called another song "John Coltrane Stereo Blues." I don't even have to hear the song, but just the title, and all is forgiven.
One of the finest recordings of the 1980's.......2006-11-06
This record stands the test of time and truly rocks my world. It's light burns brighter than a thousand suns.
Easily one of the most influential guitar albums ever released.......2006-05-01
There are two reasons for anyone who loves music--especially indie and alternative rock--to get this album. First, it is a great album in its own right, featuring several truly great cuts and some wonderful guitar playing. Second, it is easily one of the most influential albums ever released. Alternative may have become popular with the release of Nirvana's NEVERMIND in 1991, but in fact there were a number of important releases that preceded it and that contributed to the sound that would become alternative. Nirvana only popularized alternative, it neither developed nor invented it. They were no pioneers, though they were a great band by any measure. Before Nirvana a number of musical sources went into the formation of alternative, from Neil Young's grungier outings to Television's MARQUEE MOON to Greg Sage's efforts with The Wipers and in the eighties with The Replacements, H?sker D?, R.E.M., and the Pixies. But few bands were more important to the development of the grunge guitar sound than was Steve Wynn's Dream Syndicate and no Dream Syndicate was more influential than THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES.
The fascinating thing about the album is that it sounds so familiar, but when you look at the albums that it sounds like, they all come after its release, while nothing that came before bears much resemblence to it. Little in rock is truly original, but this comes as close as one can get. One can hear a lot of Television in the album, especially the slower pace of the songs, but the guitar playing sounds far more like Neil Young than either Tom Verlaine or Richard Lloyd. Some compare it to the Velvet Underground, but I've never heard that as much as Television. Like Television, the Dream Syndicate is built around twin guitars, though an unequal partnership. Steve Wynn is so much more celebrated than the underrated Karl Precoda that many think he was the only guitarist.
For those coming to Dream Syndicate for the first time, I recommend two albums. THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES (I've never been able to determine if the title was taken from Ernst Dowson's poem "Vitae Summa Brevis"-"They are not long, the days of wine and roses/Out of a misty dream/Our path emerges for a while, then closes/Within a dream."-or the Jack Lemmon movie whose title was taken from the Dowson poem) and the retrospective TELL ME WHEN IT'S OVER: THE BEST OF THE DREAM SYNDICATE. Though the band produced a lot of good music, almost all of it is contained on these two CDs. I'm actually not a big fan of the extended version of THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES. The CD includes the eponymous EP that came out shortly before the LP and I find few of the EP cuts to be anywhere near as interesting as the LP versions. I'm not much of a fan of extended versions of albums; I rarely find that the extra cuts are especially good additions to an album. There are exceptions. Elvis Costello's extended versions of albums often contain fascinating alternative cuts of songs (e.g., the acoustic version of "Green Shirt") and the Gram Parson versions of the songs that were (for legal reasons) sung instead by Roger McGuinn on the Byrds's SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO are vastly superior. But these are the exceptions. To be honest, I would rather that THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES featured only the original cuts and I'll be honest and say that on my iPod I've deleted the additions and kept only the original nine cuts.
However one listens to this album, either at home with all the cuts or on iPod with extra cuts eliminated (my recommendation), this is one of the crucial albums in the development of alternative rock. The songs remain very strong a quarter of a century later (eeek! I suddenly feel old!). "Tell Me When Its Over," "When You Smile," "That's What You Always Say," "Then She Remembers," "Halloween," and the title track are as haunting now as when the album first came out. Truly one of rock's great albums.
A gem.......2005-10-25
This album is brilliant. It was [and remains] so refreshing to hear a band of that era write and perform music that purely guitar-driven. The songs hold up to this day, decades later.
The one negative review posted here is mystifying to me.
A severe, severe disappointment for me.......2004-07-13
Having admired the fiery psychedelia of Television's "Marquee Moon", this album was widely recommended to me by the press and others, being seen by some as an "earthier" version of alternative rock.
However, it is fair to say that Steve Wynn and co. really cannot be said to live up to the hype in any way whatsoever. Whilst "The Days Of Wine And Roses" might take many of its riifs and melodies from a record like "Marquee Moon", there is no way at all in which one can say that it ever does anything better than copy it both in sound and production. For the most part, it is melody-free noise: feedback-drenched, yes, but with no melody to counter it. Wynn's dry vocals are an even worse part of the record: they're half-spoken and really give no sense of a message whatsover.
Only rarely, on "Tell me When It's Over" or the Kendra smith vocal track "Too Little Too Late" does any trace of psychedelia shine through. Even these tracks are not enough to make what is otherwise a noisy hard rock album (though with relatively sparse and undated production) worth hearing.
"Days Of Wine And Roses" I expected to be great: to say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Mr Lucky.......2007-05-13
Dave Grusins arrangements of Gershwin and his work with Lee Ritenour and Brasil artists is astounding. He makes everything so listenable! So here we have him arranging the great original works of Hank Mancini. The magic of both these great musicians is overwhelming. Henry wrote some great classics. Dave Grusin gives them a freshness that you will want to listen to over and over again.
Wife is happy now........2007-01-09
Wife had heard this CD on FM radio and secretly wrote it's name on slip of paper. I found it and got it for her for Christmas. "When mama is happy, everbody is happy."
Moonlight homage!.......2006-06-08
Dave Grusin made a very heartfelt homage in Henry Mancini `s memory with this striving album that deserves all your special attention.
If I had to find any motive of complaint around this invaluable CD is the few number of songs. Perhaps Moon river, Charade, and Sunflower could be arranged and included because these three themes were emblematic and definitive in the winning career of Mancini
The only hope I have is that Cruisin makes a second album. But this is fantastic entry to enjoy.
"Fresh, Interesting and Successful Music!".......2006-05-21
I remember collecting Mancini on vinyl when I was a kid. The phrase above was on one of the album covers.
I see Henry Mancini, in hindsight, as a classic example of how talent is consumer voraciously by the entertainment business. He enjoyed his success, to be sure, but it sucked everything out of him, too.
This album is distinguished by its final track though. First, I did not know that lyrics existed for "Soldier in the Rain," and wonder who wrote them. Second, to me, Grusin's choice of this track as the last depicted was no accident. Mancini was a devoted father and husband, and he wanted the best for his children, very much including his son. "That your someday child, never knows the rain."
Grusin's tribute to this great musician and composer is well-fitted and much welcomed.
Dave Grusin Plays Mancini . . . Two For The Road.......2006-01-17
Dave Grusin's greatest influence and inspiration in his musical career was Henry "Hank" Mancini, and he dedicated this album in memory of the legendary composer. When he was younger and trying to decide what road to take, he thought of the music of Henry Mancini and some other composers such as André Previn and Elmer Bernstein.
According to Dave Grusin, Hank Mancini was "as generous with advice and enthusiasm as anyone he had known in this arena, the whimsical good humor you hear in his music was there in real life as well."
Dave Grusin is joined by some of the finest studio musicians in creating one of the best Henry Mancini tributes: John Pattitucci (bass), Harvey Mason (drums), Russell Malone (guitar), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion), Tollak Ollestad (harmonica), Gary Grant (trumpet), Andrew Martin (trombone), Jerry Hey and the Hot Band, Dan Higgins, Tom Scott and Eric Marienthal (sax). Diana Krall did the vocals on "Dreamsville" and "Soldier In The Rain."
This is Henry Mancini music in smooth jazz, so typical of Dave Grusin's innovative and jazz-oriented arrangements and it presented not only his skills but also his dedication to piano playing.
It's an awesome CD to listen to and enjoy the music of Henry Mancini and the artistry of Dave Grusin. You'll be delighted with all the selections especially his terrific interpretations of "Moment To Moment," "Two For The Road," "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Days of Wine and Roses."
Very highly recommended.

More does not necessarily mean better.......2005-09-21
This recording sounds less like the Boston Pops and more like 101 Strings. (That's not a compliment.) In fact, I know there are better performances of each one out there. These are actually all pleasant, familiar pieces which I like. I'm not at all sure they should all be on the same album. If you want background music while you're reading, or making love, this is perfect. If you're driving late at night and trying to stay awake, not so good! In short, the sum is less than the total of its parts. But I'm giving it a 3, because I do like most of the individual pieces, and I never give more than 4.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Frank Sinatra and conductor/arranger Nelson Riddle teamed up in 1964 to record this collection of Oscar-winning songs from the previous three decades. While hardly groundbreaking, the results are extremely enjoyable. "Swinging On a Star" sounds as if it were written specifically for Sinatra, while "Days of Wine and Roses," "Moon River," "It Might as Well Be Spring," and "Secret Love" are also well worth the price of admission. Though it probably isn't the place to start your Sinatra collection, the album will certainly make a swell soundtrack for your next cocktail party. --Dan Epstein
Customer Reviews:
Could Have Been Done Better.......2006-12-23
This is a good album, not the best of Sinatra, but he was creative. I like what he did with "Days of Wine & Roses," a nice swinging, treatment. "Moon River" is done ok, but I know Frank could have done much better, probably if he had recorded this a couple years earlier.
On many of the numbers, Sinatra's voice sounds rough for some reason.
Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing could have used a more 'Concert Sinatra' approach. But this album seems like it was a rush job.
The Way You Look Tonight is a Sinatra classic and he does this just fine...I won't say anymore.
'Fountain,' 'Spring,' 'Continental,' and 'All the Way' are fine Sinatra re-do's.
Though not a bad album, it could have been done better. Great for that in-the-car listening.
Recommended for the "Way You Look Tonight" and if you want to hear a swingin' "Days of Wine & Roses."
Remembering Frank Sinatra On His 90th Birth Anniversary.......2005-12-12
On this day of December 12th ninety years ago, a baby boy was born to become the Entertainer-of-the-Century, the most-loved singer of all-time, the greatest singer ever lived and the most prolific interpreter of Great American Songbook. He left lasting impressions on each and every song he sung, making them his own and leaving the magic of his voice glued to every listener's ears. And I'm proud to say that I'm one of those listeners who caught the magic of his voice and his style of singing, I would say "The Sinatra Charisma."
My first exposure to his music was when I was growing up and constantly hearing from my late parents' collection of Sinatra's LP records. So his music is not new to me when I started my very own ever-growing collection. I have reviewed a number of his CDs and realized that I haven't written one for this recording of Academy Award winning songs, which is one of his greatest albums of all-time. Of course, its greatness was magnified not only by the legendary singer's superb interpretations but also by the simple fact that it was Nelson Riddle who arranged and conducted this awesome recording.
What do Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Henry Mancini, Hoagy Carmichael, Sammy Cahn, Jim Van Heusen have in common? They were all great and each of them had made a name in the field of composing and songwriting. Likewise, they all have the much-coveted "Academy Awards Winning Songs" to add to their impressive credentials. And these winners are compiled in this CD starting off with two of my all-time favorites from Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini "Days Of Wine And Roses" (1962), and "Moon River" (1961).
The most enchanting tracks include a swing version of "The Way You Look Tonight" theme song from the 1936 movie "Swing Time." It's an achingly beautiful ditty that brings back a lot of fond memories to me. (Sigh). This song was composed by Jerome Kern and the lyrics were penned by Dorothy Fields.
"With each word
Your tenderness grows
Tearing my fears apart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose
Touches my foolish heart."
One of the winners is "All The Way" (1957), my number one favorite song penned by the most eloquent songwriter America ever produced and Mr. Sinatra's very favorite lyricist, Sammy Cahn, and its music was composed by Jim Van Heusen. What a gem of a song - simply put, a sheer beauty.
The rest of the winners are "It Might As Well Be Spring" (State Fair, 1945), "The Continental" (Gay Divorcee, 1934), "Secret Love" (Calamity Jane, 1953) and "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing," from the 1955 movie of the same title.
What makes this CD a real winner? Frank Sinatra's superb singing, Nelson Riddle's sublime arrangements and orchestration and the Academy Award winning songs. It deserves a special spot in your music library.
Happy Listening!
Don't Miss This One.......2004-09-12
This album is another example of why Sinatra and Riddle worked so well together. You might think you that this is just a warmed over collection of show tunes but you would be wrong. This is a collection that shows how the exceptional can make even the familiar special. Frank is strong and clear and Nelson has the Band playing in a creative style throughout. Enjoy!
Better than the movies........2002-04-24
This collection, released as "Academy Award Winners" as well as "Days of Wine and Roses," is valued by most Sinatra fans for one reason only: Sinatra's singularly swinging treatment of "Just the Way You Look Tonight." As satisfying as that performance is, the other interpretations, despite what some critics have said, are practically on a level with the Jerome Kern classic. Sinatra's the only singer I can think of who sensed, as do practically all jazz instrumentalists, that the best way to do "Days of Wine and Roses" is up-tempo. And to compare his version of "Moon River" to Andy Williams' hit version, or of a popular period piece like "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" to the hit record by The Four Aces, is to come closer to the secret of Sinatra's greatness. Neither version is simply a soaring melody transporting us to some never never land. Sinatra finds the moments of poetry and drama in the material, bringing it to life in a way that is authentically personal and unmistakably real.
The only misjudgement, and a minor one, is the ballad-like treatment of "Secret Love." Granted, the song works fine that way when addressed to the heavens by the innocent voice of Doris Day. But here's where Sinatra and Riddle should again have followed the lead of jazz instrumentalists and gone with a straightahead swinging arrangement. Had they done so, there would have been not one but at least two singularly swinging reasons for owning this album.
Am I too critical? Compare This Effort with Frank's Best...........2001-12-05
...And then there is no contest!!! First off,his singing here is rough for some reason. The definitive "Way You Look Tonight" Okay, but that is mainly because of Mr. Riddle's glorious arrangement.Frank has a rough moment hitting the word "heart",though most of this tune does meet his normal remarkable standard."Days of Wine and Roses" has a very similar sound,a good cut but one you won't want to replay too much."All the Way" is well done here the second time around with less brass, more strings.Nice job,but the original is the one to hear. "Swingin on a Star"? Some sharp reviewers hear give it raves. IMHO, Bing's mellow humor, and generally silly arrangement fit this to a T. After all, this is a kid's song.Sorry, but Bing does outdo Frank on this one,and Bing recorded this twenty years earlier! "Secret Love" is really a wasted effort, and some of the others just don't do it for me. Actually, when I moved some time back, this is the only Frank CD that I kept in storage with the usual rock stuff that will remain there...Hey.I'm a Frank diehard,People who meet me probably think I'm crazy about Frank, and my response is always."No one can touch him!" (especially when any rock names come up)...But one has to be "true to your code",so I'll give this one a three, and a weak one at that. My comments on other Frank records may really be useful to the beginner, since I only give five stars to his very best, which is a heck of a lot!! Make this one maybe your 25th Frank CD purchase.
