Now in its fifth decade, the James Bond film series has outlived the Cold War concerns that spawned it--not to mention the acting careers of a Sean Connery replacement or three. Indeed, its musical sensibility has often been the cycle's most reliable artistic link across the decades. While the arrival of latest Bond Daniel Craig inspired the producers to forge a long-overdue prequel plot gambit ("How Bond became Bond") for their Casino Royale redux, composer David Arnold's fourth Bond score helps bridge the past while subtly pushing it ever forward. The album's absence of a pop-song title single (though the melody of the Arnold/Chris Cornell-composed "You Know My Name" is interpolated into the underscore) isn't terribly shocking, considering the waning fortunes of recent efforts in the genre. But other traditions continue, with the full-bodied score here subtly infusing the elegant spirit of original Bond maestro John Barry into Arnold's own mix of brooding tension-builders and the dynamic, brassy rhythms of his signature action cues. The latter even gingerly cross over into the synth-charged club milieu of Eric Serra's GoldenEye score, a sensibility that was reviled as sacrilege by Bond aficionados a decade ago but that's since become a staple of mainstream film scoring. Arnold brings it all full circle with the muscular coda "The Name's Bond...," a lovingly authentic, barely revamped workout of the epochal Barry/Monty Norman theme that anchors the series to glories past. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Bashing the wall.......2007-07-09

Great Music that matches a great Movie. Able to picture the movie with the music. The Bass notes in some of the songs are great. Good CD

4 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack, but missing the key........2007-05-18

What genius decided to exclude "You Know My Name"? This is the first Bond Soundtrack that I know of that does not include the title song. Over the years, the Bond soundtracks have always been about 2 things for me: the Bond theme (and how it's woven into the overall soundtrack), and the title song (and how pumped up it gets you for the rest of the movie). There have been some great ones, and not so great ones, but no matter what, they were always on the soundtrack, and I could identify the movie from the title song. "You Know My Name", imho, was one of the better ones, and to exclude it is a travesty.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling James Bond music.......2007-05-10

Once again british composer David Arnold give an excellent composition for James Bond

4 out of 5 stars A different take on Bond.......2007-05-06

David Arnold's score for "Casino Royale" is good, but very different. The score is not filled with cues from the traditional James Bond music from over the years. Instead it has lots of action and dramatic themes to replace those. The typical Bond theme doesn't come into play until the last track on the CD, aptly entitled: "The Name's Bond...James Bond." Arnold's previous score from "Die Another Day" was good, but this one is definitely better. "African Rundown" and "Miami International" are definitely the highlights on the album while "Dirty Martini" and "The End of the Aston Martin" are also shorter good tracks. Overall the album is great, there are just a few tracks that don't quite live up to the rest of the album. But if you're a fan of film scores, this one is definitely on the list as a good one.

3 out of 5 stars What? No title song!?!.......2007-04-26

I've been a fan of Bond soundtracks for a long time now, and still have the LPs from the first 13 Bond movies. When I went to buy the soundtrack from Casino Royale, something told me to check the song list...and I couldn't believe it! They left off "You Know My Name!" I can only attribute this to greed or selfishness on someone's part. I was blown away by both the title song and the score. They were original, rich, and really added to the film. Unfortunatey, I just can't justify $14.99 for the soundtrack without getting "You Know My Name" and the end title music. Too bad!

Album Description

Import only double-disc pressing of their remix compilation. Saint Etienne has always been receptive to electronic music, and their openness has served them quite well. Casino Classics, a collection of remixes, shows how forward-thinking they've been since the beginning of their career. While several mixes (Secret Knowledge, David Holmes, Underworld) are aimed squarely for the progressive house dancefloor - an indication more of when this album came out than of individual taste - there are plenty of surprises. Though the first disc features mostly previously released mixes, there are still plenty of treasures. Dub fans can go to the Aloof's mix of 'Speedwell' or Andrew Weatherall's epic mix of 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'. The Aphex Twin is also represented in all his clanging abstract glory with his landmark remix of 'Who Do You Think You Are'. The second disc features mostly new mixes, and there are some doozies. The dancefloor breaks of Way Out West's take on 'Angel' shows them at their peak, while dirty funk erupts from Monkey Mafia's 'Filthy' and Death in Vegas' 'People Get Real'. But the real gems are PFM's gorgeous and atmospheric drum `n' bass on 'The Sea' and Broadcast's angular version of 'Angel'--classics that hit the jackpot every time. BMG.

2 out of 5 stars A little bit patchy.......2006-01-18

Having been a fan of Saint Etienne pretty since first hearing the joyous "I was born in Christmas day" in 1993, I was eagerly anticipating the release of this foray into the electronic world. Saint Etienne have always been receptive to electronic music, and indeed some of their finest moments have been at the hands of the remixer, including "Sylvie" (Trouser Enthusiasts remix), "He's on the phone" (Motiv 8 mix) etc. The ambitious "Casino classics" features some very high profile remixes of classic Saint Etienne tracks by contemporary dance producers. Originally released in 1996, it was commissioned and issued on the back of the success of the group's first forays into the electronic arena, and tracks such as "Pale movie" and "Like a motorway" really opened up this genre-straddling ensemble to a wider audience.

CD1 begins with the rather lacklustre Chemical Brothers remix of the dark and brooding "Like a motorway", one of Saint Etienne's finest moments. Unfortunately the Bros have seen fit to omit the melancholy vocal, rendering the original far superior to this interpretation.

The Billy Nasty mix of "Pale movie" is up next and again 'pales' in comparison to the soaring, uplifting original. A techno-electro affair, it fails to do justice to this timeless 1994 single.

The Aloof's mellow remix of "Speedwell" is a significant improvement upon the last two remixes, and indeed showcases The Aloof's immense talent as ambient/trip hop producers and remixers.

Next up is one of the highlights of the entire Saint Etienne's back catalogue in the shape of "Only love can break your heart". Andrew Weatherall's mix of two halves is an amazing aural affair, the vocals of which do not actual kick in until the sixth or seventh minute of the track. Weatherall truly was an electronic pioneer, and it is really hard to believe that this remix is sixteen years old.

An unclassifiable and somewhat messy remix of "Who do you think you are" is up next, barely recognisable and is best glossed over.

Gordon King's take on "Avenue" is a classy US house affair which somewhat atones for the previous disaster.

The Sure Is Pure remix of "Hug my soul" is a disappointing affair which does sound very dated to these ears. Sure Is Pure were certainly one of the more prolific remix teams of the early '90s but very few of their remixes have really stood the test of time.

CD2 kicks off with the quite spectacular "Angel" as remixed by Bristolian prog-breaks-trance duo Way Out West, a pioneering act who have been responsible for some of the more cutting edge productions and remixes of the last decade. Their remix of "Angel" is executed in timeless WOW style, a breaks infused hugely melodic masterpiece, and one of the best Saint Etienne remixes to date.

Track 2 sees Jon Carter take on "Filthy" donning his Monkey Mafia guise. This is a pretty inspired remix executed in Carter's own moody brand of big beat (as it was known than) and in fact could be mistaken for one of his own productions

"People get real" receives the remix treatment from the noted Death In Vegas, whose remix really offers nothing new or memorable - the same can be said for Psychonauts take on "Sometimes in winter"

Legendary cocktail drum and bass outfit PFM aka Richard Fearless has been responsible for some of the finest d&b remix/production work of the last decade, with his remix of "Love for life" - Lisa Moorish really breaking the mould. PFM's interpretation of "The sea" is not as immediate as the aforementioned rework but is definitely worth a lesson, regarded by many d&b fans as a defining moment of the genre

"Burnt out car" has been refashioned in a euphoric trance mould and sounds a little dated some twelve years after its commission, hardly surprising really.

In a similar vein, Primax's remix of "He's on the phone" has aged terrible, is devoid of redeeming features and is but a shadow of the definitive Motiv 8 mix which sounds pretty contemporary eleven years after its release.

Up next is one of the best known and best loved of all the Saint Etienne remixes. "Cool kids of death", as remixed by Underworld, weighs in at a massive sixteen minutes and truly showcases Underworld's immeasurable talent, foresight and innovation. A dark, brooding but hugely atmospheric and hypnotic remix, "Cool kids of death" continues to build throughout the first ten minutes, featuring teasing snippers of Sarah Cracknell's sublime vocal.

All in a little bit patchy, aside from the Underworld mix of "Cool kids of death", Way Out West's take on "Angel" and the PFM remix of "The sea" this really isn't a worthwhile investment. In this instance alone it is worthwhile hunting down the originals, the majority of which are featured on "Too young to die" and giving this one a miss

5 out of 5 stars A new way to enjoy SE.......2004-09-25

Some of the remixes will only be appreciated by hardcore Saint Etienne fans like myself. Others should be played nightly in clubs across the globe (e.g. Burnt Out Car, He's on the Phone). Sexy-Fun.

4 out of 5 stars Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 4.......2004-11-21

We Brits should be proud of having produced St Etienne, an utterly contemporary sounding group who regularly flitted up the charts in the nineties with their sure footed pop sensibilities and Sarah Cracknell's languid vocals. They could effortlessly draw from the music of previous decades, yet were not afraid to be avant-garde, and at the same time had one foot firmly in the dance camp.
This is evidenced here by the cutting edge remixers they commissioned for the numerous white labels and B-sides they released and some they didn't. Some of the best are gathered within these covers: The Chemical Brothers, Secret Knowledge (Kris Needs), The Aloof (Jagz Kooner), Andrew Weatherall, The Aphex Twin, David Holmes, Death In Vegas, Lionrock, Underworld and Broadcast, many of them still unknown names at the time.
The highly anthologised Weatherall "mix in two halves" of Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart is present and correct as is the mighty 14 minute version of Cool Kids Of Death remixed by Underworld and the famous Trouser Assassin mix of Pale Movie.
Disc 1 begins and ends with versions of Like A Motorway, while Disc 2 bookends versions of a new song called Angel and features several other new songs and mixes, including the best track of all, a Monkey Mafia reworking of a 1991 B-side called Filthy, featuring the vocals of Q-Tee and a sample of Tone-Loc's Wild Thing

      2 out of 5 stars Classics......yeah right............2002-11-04

This is only worth the money if you don't already have the 2-disc version of "too young to die" singles collection. The first disc is the bonus disc that came with the singles collection. Some of the remixes were ok, but there were just too many instrumentals. Most of side two is the same. Most of the remixes bear no resemblance to the original tracks, and seeing as how most of the vocals are also gone, it's really hard to enjoy. If you like extended versions or radically remixed VOCAL remixes, then this is not for you. You'd be better off searching for the individual singles and finding the one vocal remix on them.

4 out of 5 stars St. Etienne is merely a platform for some of these artists........2000-07-04

This is NOT a typical St. Etienne disc. This is a electronic complilation, and a fine one at that. Very rarely do we see the original tracks true colors as most of these artists have opted for a more obsure version of the song they "covered". I will say for me disc 2 is much better. Starting with "Angel" and ending with "Angel", disc 2 contains many diiferent feels and many different styles. Whether is the god-like trance of Underworld's "Cool Kids Of Death", or Lionrock's "Nothing Can Stop Us", it showcases some great tunes! Other highlights includes tracks by Death In Vegas, Monkey Mafia and Primax. Disc one has some treasure as well. Chemical Brothers do their fine version of "Motorway", and Aphex Twin does his own thing to "Who Do You Think You Are". If you are a fan of Underworld I highly recommend this based on their track alone. I doubt this will ever see the light of day here in the states, so if can spare a few extra dollars, you'll come away with a nice complitaion for electronic music collection.

5 out of 5 stars This is not the Saint Etienne you know and love........2000-02-28

This is Saint Etienne under a full moon, transformed into something wild and strange. This is a double CD of remixed craziness, turning classic Et tunes into 10 minute bits of insanity. This is techno madness, this is colder-than-ice dub, this is Sarah Cracknell digitally crooning from an alternate universe. This is a great album.

      4 out of 5 stars variety rules.......1999-12-14

While all the remixes on this set are worthy, it's a definite buy solely for "Burnt Out Car", which is the greatest lost pop record I've yet heard. Even if that doesn't tickle your fancy there's plenty more here to amuse. A nice record (in all senses).
