Three years ago, a 13-year old Taylor Swift set out to be a star and moved from Reading, Pennsylvania, to Nashville. By 14, she had a publishing deal, and by 15, a recording contract. In these days of Bianca Ryan (and before her, Tanya Tucker and LeAnn Rimes), many are called, but few are chosen. Swift, it appears, is one of the chosen ones. Her vocal talent is modest, though sweetly affecting, her style seemingly influenced by the radio hits of early Sheryl Crow and Michelle Branch, and perhaps Cyndi Thomson. And at times, her youthfulness shows--she encoded messages in the lyrics of her CD booklet, starting with the name of the boy who cheated on her from "Should've Said No" (the album's strongest offering). But in writing or co-writing all 11 songs on this debut, Swift demonstrates remarkable maturity, particularly in crafting a hooky, radio-ready chorus. Though she sounds ridiculous looking back from the perspective of an 87-year old woman on "Mary's Song," to her credit she mostly writes about what she knows--unrequited high-school crushes ("Teardrops on My Guitar"), teenage angst ("Tied Together with a Smile"), and complete immersion in starry-eyed romance (her breakout hit "Tim McGraw"). Swift has such wistful charm and tunefulness that only a curmudgeon could dismiss her, and in fact, more than 60,000 fans lined up to grab this CD the first month of release. No wonder Rascal Flatts and George Strait added her to their tours. Look out, Carrie Underwood--there's a new kid in town. --Alanna Nash

Nice Debut Album - great future for this talented girl!.......2007-06-28

Taylor has a very nice voice and great range. There are some very nice songs on the album. However, I agree that she is definitely writing for a teen audience...which is actually refreshing these days since she is a teenager!

I enjoyed many of the songs, but I'm sure my kids can relate more to her lyrics. That being said, she shows a lot of talent and I'm looking forward to more of her work in the future.

If I was 15 I would give this cd 5 stars hands down. Taylor has a great voice, catchy lyrics, and a nice combination of slow and fast songs. However, I feel a bit sheepish jammin' to it in my car when the lyrics are so clearly written by a 15 year old--not saying that they are bad (they are quite catchy) but they so obviously explain the life of a fifteen year old and not an adult. Still, I really really think this CD is worth the money, you may just feel a little silly when you sing along with a few songs ... "I hate that stupid old pickup truck you never let me drive, your a redneck heartbreak whose really bad at lying. So watch me light a match on all my wasted time as far I'm concerned your just another picture to burn."

Awesome CD...Love every song....usually you get a few good song and the rest are just fluff or the same old stuff....recommend to anyone...she's great.

Like Keith Urban, Texan Jack Ingram flaunts a studied blond scruffiness that initially telegraphs he might rely more on sex appeal than music. But also like the Australian guitarzan, Ingram knows how to deliver the goods. His average-guy voice positions him more on the rocking side of country, and proves a perfect vehicle for the kickoff song, Radney Foster and Gordie Sampson's rootsy "Measure of a Man," which dovetails a rebel Steve Earle stance with a declaration of the changing power of love. The formulaic pop of "Wherever You Are," Ingram's #1 single--reprised like the bubblegummy "Love You" from an earlier album--is standard-issue Nashville, as is "featuring" Sheryl Crow on "Hold On," but then burying her vocals in the mix. But Ingram makes up for such transgressions with his deliciously lubricated cover of Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" and with his own finely-drawn songs of family (the folkish "Ava Adele") and the Lone Star landscape that produced him ("Great Divide"). Jack Ingram's first studio album in a few years is excellent. "This is It" is a solid collection of Ingram's signature "red-dirt" country songs; herein Jack Ingram displays his virtuoso guitar skill and his never-failing vocal abilities.

1) Measure of a Man - This song is about Jack coming to terms with his father leaving the family. The music video features a Kristofferson look-a-like. My favorite moment is 2:25 minutes into the song: he sings the chorus over an acoustic guitar.

2) Hold On - This song is inspirational and features Sheryl Crowe's vocals. I'll let the song speak for itself: "Hold on to dancin' in the rain."

3) Lips of an Angel - When Jack Ingram covered the Hinder hit, he was much derided for doing so. However, I prefer his vocals over the gravelly Hinder singing. The added country instrumentation takes a hardcore rock song into better dimensions. When he was on CMT Top 20 he said his kids like Gwent Stefani, and they particularly like him to sing "Hollaback Girl" rather than his own songs - he can make any song great.

4) Wherever You Are - Jack Ingram's 2005 Country #1 is a road-song about a man on a quest to find his girl. The video (included on this disc) was on CMT's Sexiest Videos list for obvious reasons and the Top20 Countdown. Great vocals.

5) Love You - This is a fun, playful song that replaces f**k with love. Jack Ingram gives the listener a 2:45 minute great time. The video is also on the disc, and features a Paris Hilton look-a-like destroying what she thinks is Jack's truck while he and his band preform. This should have been a #1.

6) Easy as 1, 2, 3 (Part II) - This is my favorite song from the album because it's so upbeat and hopeful. It evokes a slight bluegrass feel. This will make you "feel better" as that's what the song is about.

7) Ava Adele - This ballad about Jack's daughter reflects the proud fatherhood he recently discussed on CMT Top 20 with Lance Smith (as a side-note he said Ava always covers his mouth when he tries singing it to her). The partial spoken/sung lyrics evoke Johnny Cash's style.

8) Make a Wish (Coming Home Again) - I enjoy Jack Ingram's guitar playing on this song, because as he sings about electric lights, his strumming evokes lightning imagery. Another good road song, with a catchy hook that will be in your head. The song's message is very positive.

9) Great Divide - Jack sings about West Texas and how he will always enjoy the unchanging ways of the people. Another great road song.

10) Don't Want To Hurt - I love the thumping bass-line in this song; it reminds me of Little Big Town. The message is very relatable.

11) Maybe She'll Get Lonely - Jack Ingram croons about the need for a woman and wants her to want him.

12) All I Can Do - This is a great way to end the CD. The use of trumpets evokes a post-Katrina "Big Easy" feel.

The CD booklet is actually a poster with Jack on it. He's currently on tour with Brad Paisely, Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler and I hear they like to play practical jokes.

Jack Ingram makes a hit with "This Is It".......2007-05-07

Jack Ingram is an incredible artist. I first discovered Jack while watching CMT and have loved him since. He is the most fresh, distinct, and enjoyable artist in country music. His perfect blend of radio-hits and West Texas/honky-tonk sound is what makes this album, and Jack, great.

After many years struggling in the music scene he has finally got the commercial and critical acclaim he deserves. He recently had a No. 1 hit (on the Country Singles Chart) with "Wherever You Are," and "This Is It" debuted at No. 4 (on the Country Albums Chart). This CD is an excellent musical experience from start to finish. I believe it is the best in Country Music so far this year. Fans of Country and Rock will enjoy this CD for the well-crafted music, lyrics, vocals, and also the neat fold-out poster. Of interest is Jack's ability to transfer his incredible live sound onto CD format.

"Measure of a Man" which is his next single is a great road song. Great to listen to while driving. It is a song about the relationship between a father and a son. His lyrics are effective in crafting the story; he claims it is "Biloxi Part II," a continuation of an earlier song he wrote.

"Wherever You Are" is his No. 1 single. It is radio friendly and a good Country ballad. Definitely worth the price of the CD alone.

"Love You" is a great honky-tonk song that substitutes love, for a four letter word, in the phrase 'f--k you'. It is humorous and enjoyable. While not the best on the album it is top quality nonetheless.

"Easy as 1,2,3 (Part II)" is the best on the album. It is simply purely enjoyable to listen to. If it was a single I believe it would have charting ability.

"Make a Wish" is a great song and has a strong playback ability. It is the best example of Jack's vocal talent. I was mesmerized by the range, beauty, and power of his voice on this track.

UPDATE: After two moths of owning this album it still is appealing. I love this record. Undeniably Jakc Ingram is the best thing in country music to appear in nearly a decade. Other newcomers (Josh Turner, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, etc...) are great but Jack Ingram is exceptional. I highly recommend this CD!

Recommended for Country and Rock fans. Simply, the best of 2007 (as of the middle of the year). Enjoy Jack and his much needed fresh talent.

Ingram's in the Right Direction Towards "It".......2007-04-03

Prime Cuts: Easy as One, Two, Three (Part II), Ava Adele, Whenever You Are

After years of loitering along the fringes of country music, Ingram has finally broke in with his number 1 smash "Whenever You Are." To up the ante on the barometer of hip, Ingram has ushered the advent of this CD with the unlikely cover of rock act Hinder's "Lips of an Angel." Thus far, success has been effulgent as "Lips" is lighting its way up the upper echelon of the Billboard country charts. Produced by Jeremy Stover, Doug Lancio and Ingram, this disc steers along the path paved by "Wherever You Are" which means that most of these 12 cuts have been recorded with an eye for becoming darlings of radio. However, before purists who have followed Ingram's career bark at Ingram's viable shrewdness, not everything have been sacrificed at the altar of commercialism. Truth be told, "This is It" does indeed have a more polished savvy sheen to it, but this is not to say there is a dearth of the raw emotional investiture Ingram always brings to his songs. Further, Ingram's commercial success has no way been caliginous towards his twinkle for Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and Robert Earl Keen's type of Americana that rock with a venturesome abandon and drenched the soul like vintage liquor.

Destined to be a hit is the Radney Foster-Gorde Sampson opener, a stately rock number with a Bon Jovi-anthemic beat. "Measure of a Man" chronicles a coming of age story starting with a boy leaving home at 15. Without being told that "Lips of an Angel" was first recorded by rock act Hinder, it might easily sound like an Ingram original. A brooding bluesy ballad calling to mind Gary Allan's "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," "Lips of an Angel" describes with vivid details the feelings of a man on the verge of cheating on his girl. If such moral graft has left a bitter aftertaste, "Hold On" which features Sheryl Crowe on backing vocals has a more censurable disposition about the tenacity of love over circumstances. While the driving-guitars and barrier-smashing drums on Todd Snider's "Easy as One, Two, Three" is sonically infectious.

However, the album's highlights are in the contemplative moments. To prove that the triumph of a song resides not in its lyrical density but the sincerity of the words, "Ava Adele" is the bona fide example. With the simplest of words, this gentle guitar-driven lullaby is Ingram's love song to his daughter. Giving it depth and grit, Ingram's gravelly vocals brings out a magical quality to this heart-wrenching ballad. "Ava Adele" could easily be Ingram's magnum opus. While the mid-tempo "Maybe She'll Get Lonely" finds Ingram in Tim-McGraw territory as he holds to the sliver of hope that his departed paramour may return to him if she gets lonely. And as an added bonus, two of Ingram's previous hits the propulsive "Wherever You Are" and the more rockish "Love You" give this collection added heft.

Indeed Ingram has taken a step in the right direction by making his music appeal to a large spectrum of people vis-à-vis country radio without completely selling out. However, as a whole, Ingram has yet to reach the lofty heights he's capable of attaining. There are still pockets on this disc that still borders on the filler side (e.g., "All I Can Do" and "Make a Wish"). So, let us hope that Ingram is not serious about this album title: for this CD is definitely hopeful, but there is still some distance from reaching "it."

I saw the Teddybears perform live at Coachella '07 and had such a fantastic time that I bought their album. Their music is lively, fun, interesting and great to dance, run or do anything active to. Very entertaining.

Maybe not the best music of the century...........2007-06-01

But honestly I cannot think of a more FUN album since, I don't know, the first English Beat album. I vacillated between giving this 4 or 5 stars, because I cannot say it is great music it is just so damned fun. It opens with the appropriately titled "Different Sound" which sets the sort of retro theme for the disc. "You move to a different sound" are the lines you'll hear as you catch your body swaying and you won't stop moving through the majority of this disc. "Cobrastyle" follows and it is one of the two strongest cuts with its incomprhensible dancehall lyric featuring some guy named mad cobra, it should be the number one track in every dance club in the world. Then comes Neenah Cherry guesting on the poppy "Yours to Keep". "Throw Your Hands Up" is another cut that should be played nightly in every club with a Jamaican by the name of Elephant leading this dance anthem. Next comes the discs first forgettable cut "Black Belt" which is no longer on my Ipod. "Punkrocker" is apparently in a car commercial, but it is the best David Bowie song that David Bowie had nothing to do with ever written. Along with Cobrastyle, it is one of 2 surefire hits. I will say this though, it sure makes sense that Punkrocker is in a car commercial because it begs to be played full blast in your convertible's stereo as you drive down the Pacific Coast Highway on a perfect spring afternoon. Heck it begs to be blaring as you pull into the West Des Moines Dairy Queen in your Geo, if that is your more likely place in the world. Then the disc gets a lot more techno and I see most the rest of the cuts being used in a Michael Mann film. "Riot Going On" is so Gary Numan. "Little Stereo" is a weird sort of singalong that I would have to label new wave dancehall, whatever the heck that is. Great Stuff throughout and a superb use of the guest celebs. Buy this disc so these guys will do another guest celeb collection. They have been around since at least 1993. Why is this the first I've heard of them?

Nice application of the "guest vocalist" concept...........2007-05-08

Hearing Iggy Pop sing "I'm a Punk Rocker" in the Cadillac TV commercial is enough to induce someone to try out this CD. But this is by no means the only knockout track on this assemblage of songs using various guest lead vocalists. This is an example of how the guest artist concept succeeds when "done right"; the band slides easily into each guest's M. O. The variety and pace changes keep your interest up throughout.

Captures a certain amount of Zeitgeist.......2006-10-04

Disclaimer: this is not my usual genre of music, inasmuch as I prefer rock and adult contemporary. After hearing the appetizer "Cobrastyle" as a current staple of the alternative radio realm, I was anxious to see the full menu. I also heard an interview of the three core band members from Stockholm about 3 weeks ago.

The album is an eclectic mix of techno pop, shining brightest when showcasing the irresistible thumping dance rhythms. The overall experience brought back a certain frenetic dance energy I haven't felt in over 10 years. Overall, I am very glad I bought it. I expect it will be a hit at any party. Turn the volume up and let loose!

The highlights for me are "Cobrastyle", "Different Sound", and "Little Stereo."

One spin through the debut of Austin-based singer-songwriter Sunny Sweeney and you may think you've entered a time warp: The Longview, Texas, native so hearkens to the honky-tonk era of the '60s and '70s that you half expect to find her on an old kinescope of one of those syndicated Nashville TV shows, the special guest ("Let's bring up a little gal now from Texas...") of the Wilburn Brothers or Porter and Dolly. Sweeney isn't a power vocalist--she'd be called a "girl singer" in the old days, stepping up demurely to do her song or two--but she's got a sense of humor, poking fun of herself on "Next Big Nothing" and insisting if you play one song in reverse, you get a broken heart. She can also cop an attitude when she wants, as on "Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame," an original tune where she evokes the good-ol'-gal assertiveness of Loretta Lynn. Sweeney has fine taste in covers, too, offering up Iris DeMent's 'Mama's Opry" and the Lacy J. Dalton hit "16th Avenue," as well as two songs by Jim Lauderdale, who lends his vocals to Keith Sykes's "Lavender Blue." Otherwise, Sweeney doesn't seem to care a flip about what's going on anyplace but right there in the Lone Star State, keeping things twangy, tangy, and tonkin', the teardrop pedal steel functioning almost as a duet vocalist, and her guitarists eschewing Music City formula riffs for stuttering electric solos and the occasional walking bass. It's been a long time since any young female--think Joy Lynn White, maybe--got this deep-dish country. Sweeney may never get on the radio, but she'll keep the sawdust swirling on the dance floor for a long time to come. --Alanna Nash

Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, recorded in Floresville, TX and co-produced by Sunny with producers Tommy Detamore (guitar, pedal steel, lap steel, Dobro) and Tom Lewis (drums), isn't one of those quiet, timid little baby-steps records that slowly grows on you with hints of future potential. It explodes into the room with an ultra-confident, Texas-sized "HOWDY!" and demands your full attention.

Listen to Sunny rip and swagger her way through the dozen songs on Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, and you wonder: Where has this gal been hiding until now? The first thing that grabs you is her voice - a big, bold and brassy instrument that brings to mind both the classic female country singers of the `60s and `70s that she grew up on as part of a country-music-loving family (both her grandfather and stepfather played in bands) as well as two of Sunny's biggest modern influences, Natalie Maines and Kasey Chambers, at their most unapologetically untamed. It's a voice that all but screams Sunny's adopted slogan: "Get your honky-tonk on!"

And on Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, Sunny does just that. From winning originals like "Ten Years Pass," "Slow Swinging Western Tunes" and the title track, to classy covers of tunes by some of her favorite writers (including Iris DeMent, Keith Sykes, Thom Schuyler and Jim Lauderdale), it's an album that has little in common with either pop country or "Texas country." It's country, pure and simple - as primed for a Lone Star honky-tonk as it is the Grand Ole Opry or any radio station that still makes room for George and Tammy and Merle and Loretta.

Fantastic! I heard Ms Sweeney on a satellite radio station and was immediately hooked. She has such a sweet honesty in her voice, and her songs tickle that ol' thinkin' bone stuck up in the brain. I was most pleased with this cd and look forward to much, MUCH more from Sunny Sweeney. My family members will be getting this cd in their Christmas stockings!

Crucial Country.......2007-05-09

I absolutely love Sunny Sweeney and this CD! The video for "If I Could" came across my path on YahooMusic one nite and I loved it. The CD has some tracks that are worth the 'price of admission' each by themself, including "East Texas Pines", "If I Could", and "Next Big Nothing". Great vocals, great pedal steel, strong guitar work. This album has revitalized my interest in singing again.

Move over Gretchen Wilson.......2007-04-21

Sunny does a perfect job of making honky tonk music with catchy tunes a twang in her voice and powerful rhythm. I find her similar to Jill King and Julie Reeves also great sounding country artists. I highly recommend this album to the serious country music lover.

Catching Texas twang with a gift for lyrics.......2007-04-17

Sunny Sweeney's debut album, Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame is compelling and catching. It feels more like a live honky-tonk performance in part because it has the pared down sound of a great bar band and not the over produced sound of too many studio albums. Sunny is a singer song-writer. The album offers a mix of her work and that of other song-writers.

What first caught my ear was the song, "If I Could." It's an infectious anthem for the average worker with an auctioneer's tempo for the catchy chorus. I found this song through Yahoo's Music Videos Country Music channel. Yahoo generates a play list, including new offerings based upon your past selections and ratings. It works. I loved this song and bought the album. A lot of catchy songs don't move me to buy. Sunny got my money.

Another special treat is a cover of, "16th Avenue," a song made famous by Lacey J. Dalton. The cover nicely matches the rest of the album in voice and tone and is not an exact copy of Dalton's version. Sunny Sweeney makes it hers.

The album is solid and engaging. It is real Country Music and Texas genuine. I'll be watching for more from Sunny Sweeney. She reputedly has a great following around her home base in Austin, Texas. I think her fan base is set to grow.
