Album Description

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars A Spike Jones chronology of his earliest records.......1999-01-19

This British import is actually a chronology of Spike's earliest 78s for Bluebird / RCA, from his first recording session in 1941 ("Red Wing") through 1945. Included are his hits ("Cocktails for Two," "Der Fuehrer's Face") and obscure B-sides ("The Covered Wagon Rolled Right Along," "Leave the Dishes In the Sink"). Spike's band was in its prime during this time, making for a good collection. Editing is good, especially joining the six parts of "The Nutcracker Suite." But note that the source material is scratchy 78s!

5 out of 5 stars Best collection of marches!.......2006-08-07

In spite of the mixed reviews below, after listening to the samples, I had to send for this CD. I am so glad I did - this is the best collection of marches I have ever owned. It's worth noting that the Band of the Grenadier Guards is a British military band whose history goes back 300 years!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Sousa Album.......2005-09-06

This is the best album of marches I've heard. I agree with the reviewer who said they like these versions better. The orchestral versions are good, but I used to play in the band in high school (no, I don't have any "this one time, at band camp..." stories), so I like this type better.

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Marches.......2005-08-15

I like this CD better than any of the others I previewed, and when it came I wasn't disappointed. I purchased the CD to use with my dog, Nina. She loves it and it has helped her relax and gait more smoothly in preparation for exhibiting in dog shows. This CD was the only one that wasn't performed by a string orchestra. It's more like you would actually hear a marching band at a half-time football game.

3 out of 5 stars There are 2 sections in this CD.......2005-06-30

There are two different sections in this CD. Section 1 includes marches 1 to 12 and it is not the best recording that I have ever hear for Sousa Marches. However, Section 2 includes marches 13 to 23 and I consider that this is one of the best recording I have ever heard for the marches of the USA Services. So, even if the two sections are very different, you may buy this CD if you have never listened the Sousa marches; it will give you the opportunity to hear them. After that, if you wish to buy a high quality CD of Sousa Marches, continue to shop on Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars A Bit TOO "Budget Buy" For Sousa.......2004-05-16

I have become quite the Sousa fan in the past year. While my ear for classical music is that of a casual fanboy and not a seasoned classical music critic, I have become particular in my Sousa preferences, and this particular release left me cold. The pace of the marches on this CD are sluggish, and sounds tinny even to a listener with a tin ear.

John Philip Sousa marches are just too good and lively to settle for a budget release like this. A good release like those by "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band series is a better place to start your Sousa collection!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Second Rate Civil War Music.......2004-07-17

This potporri of Civil war tunes played by a selection of US service bands falls short on many levels. For one thing the CD is under 60 mins and yet is a top priced item. Also, many of the selections on here are copied from other Altissimo titles. So there is not much original music here. Its hard to know why "Amazing Grace" is here other than just for additional filler. Yes, the tune was known back then, but its hardly Civil War era music! Altissimo! just threw it in to add a few minutes more to this CD. The linear notes are an improvement from the none-existant ones of the past, but overall this is a second rate Civil War CD. The modern arrangments of the music also do not carry very well.

1 out of 5 stars Fred is a worthless talentless moron. 0 stars.......2007-04-25

Fred is back and worst than ever. Fred had the nerve to just rip off and destroy BEHIND BLUE EYES song from THE WHO which he had also desecrated that song with that stupid a** music video of halle berry making out with this pathetic loser. I believe pete townshend should really sue fred's a** off for every thing he has fred is a greedy corporate wannabe who even added that song to his hits album too which was not even his song. So how can he call that one of his hits? Well the very limp durst and his bizkits are finished for good I can't believe I use to like this band.

1 out of 5 stars No words can describe.......2006-03-14

...how awful this remake is...I'm not even against remakes, really. This one is just so bad, I can't believe it made the album. Mallrats probably love it...how sad. Everyone else has covered the details. Please, buy or find a copy of Who's Next.

1 out of 5 stars The Who should hang this new-age Europe!.......2005-10-01

For those of you that dont know who Europe is, let me explain. They were the reason why 80's music sucked. They were cliche, they were boring, they were poppy and pu***fied, they were everything that everyone hates about the eighties multiplied. They made Warrant look like the Beatles, simply put, they were the biggest and most annoying joke for fifteen years...

...Of course this was before the retard in the red cap and his entourage of apes came to town. Limp Bizkit was their name, and when they released 'Three Dolla Bell Y'all' it was the shot heard 'round the world....that western civilization would soon fall. Every album they released was far worse than the last, ultimately resulting in 'Results May Vary' which is where this little piece is off of.

Let me start by saying that Fred is now the absolute WORST human being who ever lived, he's worse than Feminem, Chris Martin, and Avril Lavigne combined and multiplied. He ruined a Who song for me and for most likely every other Who fan out there. Eggplant couldn't have made a better review of this crap, the horrible "L...I...M...P...discover" in the backround just kills any potential this cover had (and it didn't have very much. Also, Pisser pointed out that the instrumental section in the middle is missing, thus confirming just how f**king talentless the instrumentalists are. Not even Korns horrible remake of 'Another Brick in the Wall' (originally by the great Pink Floyd) is nearly as bad as this. I cant review anymore, its just too pointless because I know everyone hates this song and this band. Face it Fred, its over and its never coming back (thank God).

...I want to kill you Fred Durst...

1 out of 5 stars God, I hate you Fred........2005-09-13

NOTE: This will be my final review for anything Limp Bizkit or Fred Durst-related. They've become too much of a joke to pick on and still have fun doing so.

In 1971, legendary British rockers The Who released one of their most revered albums, "Who's Next", featuring hits "Baba O'Riley (Teenage Wasteland)", "Won't Get Fooled Again", and, of course, the greatly-written ballad "Behind Blue Eyes". This song is a classic, so much emotion put into three minutes and forty-two seconds.

In 2003, Limp Bizkit, an untalented, absymal rap-rock band (and I use the term "rock" very loosely), were on their way out. Not even the dumb wiggers who supported the "Rollin'" nonsense cared anymore. So, what does the much-hated (and with good reason) frontman Fred "Frank Dirt" Durst decide to do? Well, on the 2003 album "Results May Vary" (which is horrid, by the way), he butchered "Behind Blue Eyes". Why was it butchered?

Hmm.. first of all, he can't sing like Roger Daltrey. He adds another stupid verse to it. He puts in this damn drum machine with some stupid computer verse continually spouting out "L.... I... M... P.... Discover." ??? And, of course, he leaves out the rock end ("When my fist clenches, crack it open..."), more than likely because his band of buffoons can't play the riff. Kidz Bop couldn't have done a worse job ruining BBE. (Well, maybe they could...)

Wanna hear the song? Get The Who version. Forget Freddy's. I'll give it one thing, though, it's more standable than "Rollin'". (Then again, little isn't.)

See you at the Taco Bell counter Freddy!

1 out of 5 stars Wow... .......2004-12-11

Well, music has officially hit rock bottom with this one. John Entwistle is surely rolling over in his grave, and I'm sure Keith Moon would be too if he could. This song is unbelievably bad, as it is the worst translation of a song ever. Durst sounds like he should be fronting an emo band, not covering Who songs. As for saying he plays a good guitar, I think I can play a couple chords he uses. I feel bad for the real talent in the band noteably Wes Borlan, who has done nothing with his talent but make bad music. I'm so glad I grew up and stopped listening to these no talent @$$ clowns, and found the Who before hearing Fred's version. I may have actually liked it. For those of you who are over the age of 14 and like Limp Bizkit, I really feel sorry for you.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps more evocative than compelling . . ........2003-11-16

. . . but what else should we expect from music composed specifically for movie soundtracts?

A not inapt comparison might be the soundtracts Ry Cooder has composed and performed. Always entirely suited to the particular films they're written for, they nevertheless fall somewhat short of his best playing and writing.

The same is true of this disc. Mark Ribot is always worth a listen, even when the music he's making isn't essential, as it isn't here. Still, there are lots of interesting and a few even unique soundscapes. My favorites are "Prowler," with its haunting sequencer percussion and synth effects, "Urbanight," featuring Frank London's ethereal trumpet and cool percussion from E. J. Rodriguez, "The Beast in the Jungle," with some very evocative sampled sounds buoying Anthony Coleman's scary piano, "The Killing Zone," graced by the uncanny sounds of Ned Rothenberg's shakuhachi, "Requiem for Eitan," defined by the mesmerizing violin of Mark Feldman, "The Persistence of Memory," with grunge guitar, an unrelenting backbeat, and sinister flute/sax stylings, and "Lost Children," a deceptively simple tune demonstrating Ribot's very effective use of sampled sounds in concert with electric and classical guitar treatments.

Not surprisingly, these are mostly the longer tracts, providing enough space for sufficient melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic statement and development. As one might expect, the shorter pieces are almost pure evocation--often quite interesting and certainly atmospheric, but seldom completely satisfying.

Not essential, but certainly worth a listen. 4 and 1/2 stars.
