Album Description
Following the rapturous reviews of last October's retrospective collection "R is for.. Razorcuts", Matinée Recordings have managed to negotiate the release of a further EP’s worth of songs from the Razorcuts archive, combining lead cut "A is for Alphabet" from the aforementioned retrospective with four more beloved and much requested Razorcuts classics. The signature Razorcuts jangle is in full effect throughout this EP, from the formative simplistic beauty of rare early demo tracks "Sometimes I Worry About You" and "For Always", where the shadow of the Television Personalities still looms large, through to the Gene Clark inspired lushness of "Snowbound" from their last long player, 1989's "The World Keeps Turning." Packaged using period promo imagery from the Razorcuts vaults, this makes a fine companion to the recent retrospective album, or alternatively a fantastic introductory sampler in its own right.

These CD's are pure fun for parents and children. My Dad's 60th birthday party turned into a free-for-all with his three grandchildren dancing around and singing at the top of their lungs as soon as we put on "Fred The Fish" and anyone that has ever listened to XMKids already knows the pure bliss of "If I Were A Cup" and the fun of "Billy Bob's Breakfast". The songs are addictive to kids and enjoyable to adults. The guitar parts are great, and the lyrics are both hysterical and REALLY clever (Check out "Silent E"). Don't wait for the rest of the alphabet!! Buy Volumes 1 and 2 today!! (Unless you're reading this a long time after I wrote it and Volume 3 is ready, in which case buy that one too.)

The best children's music I've heard. Great tunes with silly lyrics for toddlers and subtly funny lyrics for older kids and adults. Impatiently waiting for the rest of the alphabet.

"De Styjl" is one of the great postminimalist, postmodern pieces. It combines funky horn riffs with boogie-woogie piano, and a bizarre choral overlay that somehow all works together. There is an almost Ivesian feel to the way, for example, the brass chugs away as the chorus seems to be off in a different harmonic world moving at its own rate. A whacky spoken interlude concerning Piet Mondrian (whose painting inspired "De Styjl") brings the work to yet another unexpected place and the whole thing finally gives way static series of isolated chords that wouldn't seem too out of place in the music of Luciano Berio, Andriessen's erstwhile teacher. The performance is committed but perhaps could, at times, swing a bit more.

I wish I could say something more positive about "M is for Man, Music, and Mozart." The music is, I think, trying to be charming but it ends up simply being cloying. I'm not qualified to judge the performance here which seems to be intentionally rough.

Do not attempt to listen to De Stijl if you don't want the most upbeat, contagious boogie-woogie tune in your head to make you dance for the rest of the week. Basso ostinato, canon, fugue, formal structure, Stravinski-influence--formal musical analysis could be put to use here, but anyone who thinks they've heard "classical" music before and listens to this piece will have to rethink some things.

I bought R for the Razorcuts and I found it so incredible with only one problem - it has only one of the songs from this EP - the title song A for Alphabet. The others are so stunning that made me buy this EP and i don't regret it, For always is actually my Razorcuts favourite song. 5 stars from a band that inspired Stone Roses, Primal Scream, Boo Raidleys and on and on. have fun, i had and I'm having now.
