5 out of 5 stars Wicked Awesome Nick!.......2004-03-14

Great tunes mostly from his Rockpile years. 'Basher' has more for your money but doesn't include 4 excellent tracks found here: Skin Deep, Nutted By Reality, They Called It Rock, and Basing Street (not found on any of his LPs). As a sidenote, indie rocker and Nick-fan Scott McCaughey (Minus Five) released a fine version of Basing Street in 1995.

p.s. And I love the demented photo of Nick on the cover (and I also love the sound of breaking glass).

16 All Time Lowes was released in 1984, just before Nick Lowe decided to return to American roots music with his fifth solo album, Nick Lowe & His Cowboy Outfit, and it appropriately functions as a greatest-hits collection of his new wave years. Most of the 16 tracks are culled from Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust, with Rockpile's "When I Write the Book" and the non-LP "Basing Street" added for good measure. It's a very entertaining collection, boasting such Nick classics as "Born Fighter," "Marie Provost," "Cruel to Be Kind," "Cracking Up," "So It Goes," and "They Called It Rock." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

I wonder why such a talented singer & songwriter should be so obscure? To me, he's as good as Elvis Costello. Every single one of these tracks is great. To single out just 4 of them: (I Love The Sound Of ) Breaking Glass with its killer hook (very evocative of David Bowie's Breaking Glass on his "Low" album), the chilling tale of Mary Provost (an actress who lost it when the talkies came in and who was eaten by her doggie in a "cheap hotel up on Hollywood West" - wonder if it was a chihuahua?), the hilarious So It Goes with its quirky beat and the singalong Nutted By Reality. I recommend this album to those who love intelligent rock-pop with clever lyrics and catchy melodies. Very much like early Elvis Costello.

5 out of 5 stars A Blaze of Glory..........1998-12-20

A fine collection of the first two solo albums from this talented songwriter that show an evolution in style and production without losing the elements of greatness. The first album, "Totem Poles and Glory Holes" has a heavy garage rock meets alt. country sound with a touch of 60's psychedelia. The lead off track, "Looking For An Angel" remains among one of Tolman's best (he's made 6 albums total, 3 of which have only been released in Europe thus far). Perhaps if Bob Dylan had used Roky Erikson and the 13th Floor Elevators while making "Highway 61 Revisted" it would have sounded something like this "Down In Earthquake Town" is quite different in that it finds Tolman sounding somewhere between Exile on Mainstreet era Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen. Here he's got some spicy soulful backing vocalists and an excellent keyboardist in Chris Cacavas (Green On Red). Jeff Kane, bassist on the first album, has switched to lead guitar where he shines on a number of solos. Lots of great songs here, but my favorites would have to "Domino", "Planes Trains & Automobiles" and "Midnight." Also check out the fine cover of Nilsson's "Jump Into The Fire."

5 out of 5 stars Great Double Set from Influential Singer-Songwriter.......1998-11-18

In the mid-80s, Russ Tolman was trailboss of the psychedelic cow-punks True West. One half of the legendary lead guitar duo with stringsmith Richard McGrath, Tolman was also True West's principal songwriter and visionary. When the band split after too many failed attempts to grasp to the brass ring, Tolman recorded two solo albums for Elvis Costello's Demon Records in the UK. These two discs "Totem Poles and Glory Holes" and "Down in Earthquake Town" are brought together for the first time on CD. "Totem Poles" was characterized by Tolman as "a great ball of noise" and he was not too far off the mark. This are raw, garagy treatments of his great tunes. "Earthquake Town" was recorded after a move to LA from the Northern California college town that spawned True West. This album is a bittersweet look at the City of Angels, which contains such classic songs as "Palm Tree Land" and "Vegas." Tolman definitely presages the "Swingers" scene. All and all, a must-have double set from Russ.
