Your Funeral [CD-single]
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
UK single for the emo-punk stars, produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices, Beck). It's a powerhouse fusion of spiky hooks & buzz saw guitars that's hard to resist bouncing along to. Tracks, 'At Your Funeral', 'Ups & Downs' & 'Your Funeral

Lionel Bart's wonderful musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic was the first London stage musical to be transplanted to Broadway with the same kind of sensation it received in Britain-- something that is now common in these post-Cats/Les Miserables times. Although no one from this British cast ever became enormously famous (future Monkee Davy Jones was in the second Broadway cast)--and Sir Carol Reed's film version receives all the critical accolades--this remains the better recording, featuring all the songs cut from the film, while excluding the film's musical interludes that simply seem annoying without the visuals. Just compare Bruce Brochnik to the film's Mark Lester in the title role. Or Clive Revill to Ron Moody's Fagin. Or any of the principals, for that matter--and the differences are remarkable. --Bill Holdship

Food for Thought - Great for Productions.......2007-07-03
If you are considering a production of Oliver this is a great recording that has good background information. It does skip some of the overture music but the rest of that tracks are well done.
Oliver is a classic and meant to be heard and seen........2007-05-25
Many of these numbers are well known. And the dark tone of the story being told is well represented by the choices made by the actors and their directors. But it IS rough and dark and mournful. Not a road-trip CD, rather a show to see in the theater.
PLEASE SIR! I WANT SOME MORE!.......2007-02-27
I starred in my local summer stock company's production of "Oliver," in the summer of 2005. I used this CD to practice learning the musical numbers, by listening to it on my iPod. It has some very memorable numbers such as "Oom-Pah-Pah," "Food, Glorious Food," "Who Will Buy?" "That's Your Funeral," and "Consider Yourself." The one Oliver song that gets on my nerves. But I just can't get enough of most of this music, after the great time I had in the show. I even listen to the soundtrack on airplane trips and car rides sometimes.
Oliver-The Broadway Cast.......2006-03-17
As an original cast member with Florence Henderson's "Sound of Music" tour 45 years ago, I have a unique perspective about this recording. Even the musical director comments at the end that this version of "Oliver" was not particularly well sung but that the cast had a lot of energy.
Unfortunately,(in my opinion) this energy doesn't translate suficiently to the recording and I agree - it's not particularly well sung. Again, from the perspective of a former child performer singing with other kids, it actually is possible for a group of children to sing together and make pleasant-sounding music. The adults in this "Oliver" aren't up to musical snuff either.
Although I haven't heard it, I'd be willing to take my chances on the original London version before settling for this one (which, by the way, was recorded in an LA studio before it even got to Broadway.)
spectacular Broadway album.......2006-02-15
The cast album to the 1963 Broadway premiere production of OLIVER! was actually recorded during the show's pre-Broadway run in Los Angeles. OLIVER! played to subsequent audiences in San Francisco, Detroit and Toronto before opening at the Imperial Theatre in New York on January 6, 1963. The show played 774 performances before prematurely ending the season to play a 9-month national tour, later returning to New York for a `farewell' run of 64 performances.
As she had done to rapturous acclaim in London three years previously, Georgia Brown played the role of Nancy, and earned similar praise for her performance in New York. Her rich, velvet-tinged voice is especially haunting with the chill inducing ballad "As Long As He Needs Me". Composer Lionel Bart wrote "It's a Fine Life" especially for Brown after learning she had been cast in the role in the London production.
Ron Moody had also scored heavily in London with his tour-de-force turn as Fagin, but with producers fearing his portrayal `too ethnic', the role was taken by Clive Revill for the Broadway premiere. Revill had just come from his celebrated role in IRMA LA DOUCE, and his interpretation of Fagin is every bit as valid as Ron Moody's. Bruce Prochnik is a winsome and wistful Oliver, and Michael Goodman is a delight as the Artful Dodger. Wisely-retained from the original London company were a handful of the first-rate supporting players: Hope Jackman's shrill Mrs Corney; and the up-and-coming Barry Humphries as Mr Sowerberry (Humphries would later graduate to playing Fagin before his beloved alter-ego Dame Edna unleashed herself on the world). The promising young belter Alice Playten was smartly-showcased as Nancy's offsider Bet.
But, the sound mix on the Broadway album has always been rather flat and dull, despite being recorded in the stereo format of the day. Voices and orchestra have no vibrancy or depth, and this was due to the studio in which they recorded it, where the ceiling was very low and the sound did not have the necessary acoustic projection. Nevertheless, the recording has a charm and energy which overrides the technical shortcomings.
This new CD reissue from RCA offers some interesting bonus materials including musical director Don Pippin sharing his memories of the show; Barry Humphries performing "That's Your Funeral" (from the London cast album but left off the Broadway album); and a live recording of Patti LuPone singing "As Long As He Needs Me" (LuPone played Nancy in a short-lived Broadway revival in 1986).
Good value.

Customer Reviews:
I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11
This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
MarMSED.......2005-08-27
The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.
Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24
Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Ragtime (1981 Film Soundtrack).......2007-02-20
Beautiful music. It sets a mood throughout that is rather sad no matter what the words say.
A beautiful achievement .......2006-02-25
The excelent Milos Forman timepiece on the 20's based on the Doctorow novel has a marvelous musical translation in this soundtrack close to perfection. It gets the time and mood of the movie, and reflects its main dramatic moments. I would dare to say that this soundtrack is one of the finest coming out from a movie of the 80's. Besides, it sounds great in this digitally remastered version. Do not hesitate to get it. It's a real beauty.
Absolutely brilliant........2005-12-28
I first came across this soundtrack when looking for Donald O'Connor songs - I'm a big fan of his, and I'm trying to track down all the songs he's ever recorded. It just so happens he has one of the most delightful songs on this soundtrack, "I could love a Million Girls". Apparently it's from a Disney film called Summer Magic, but I don't think Disney would approve of how dirty this song is if you think about it! Donald O'Connor was around 55 or so when he recorded this song, so his voice isn't as great as it was once, but he still does a fantastic job.
Now, onto the other songs. "Ragtime" (the song listed on the soundtrack) is hauntingly beautiful - it really captures the feeling and mood of the time, and puts you right back there. Same with most of the other "score" tracks. This is definately one of the best scores out there, and it's a pity it didn't do better. I guess it's almost ahead of it's time a little, considering this was the time period that gave us films like The Blues Brothers and other such early SNL comedies which didn't require scores like Ragtime needed. It really should've done better, but for now enjoy the soundtrack because I doubt you'll get another release of it!

His music... our trial.......2006-06-26
The slow dancing cheerfulness of the opening song is rather deceitful when you know that it is the title track of the album.
This is one of the very best Nick Cave albums of the early years. Together with "Tender prey" it marks the transformation from highly experimental albums like "From her to eternity" to the more mainstream blues / pop oriëntated album like "Let love in" and "Murder ballads"
The second song "Stranger than kindness" with it's mesmerising guitarplay, hypnotic percussion, odd backing sounds, and Cave's own monotone voice, is still one of my favorites and ranks among the best.
Another track, "The Carny", an original and rainy spoken word story, accompanied by a mouth-organ who seems the ocho from the far distance, became an instant-classic. During live gigs Cave is sitting on a stool and speaks in vein about the carnival and its strange artists (dog-boy, atlas, half-man, the geeks, the hired hands, some dwarfs and the carny who had a horse named Sorrow...)
Other songs like "Jacks shadow", "She fell away" and "Hard on for love" are powerful stuff, dark maybe, but with an energy drive that takes you by the hand and leads you safely through Cave's musical purgatory.
Is Cave guilty of overwelming us with sad and eerie lyrics? Is he guilty of grabbing is by the throat?
Yes he is, and on our knees we joyfully find him guilty.
Bury this lump of crow bait!.......2006-06-01
My title may seem to suggest that this album is a dud, but in fact it's my favorite line from "The Carny". Nick Cave is an amazing writer and musician. He creates this atmosphere of decay, where love is a ghost that his gruff bassiness paints in shades of regret. I love this album. Stranger Than Kindness never ceases to give me chills. Sad Waters is a lovely tune of adoration and Scum is a nightmare right out of the darkest slums. The Carny never ceases to capture my attention. I can see EVERY SINGLE image that Cave describes in his tale, from the abandoned carriage to the dwarves burying the dead horse (aptly named Sorrow).
I hate having to explain my ratings, but for some reason I just can't give this 5 stars. For as great as Your Funeral, My Trial is, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have much better work out there.
Not recommended as a pick-me-up album. If you're in a lonesome mood and need some ballads of desperation, turn down the lights and stick this in. Cave will possess you, as he somehow does with many other examples of his work.
One of Nick Cave's best.......2006-03-16
This is a flawless album from start to finish. Every single track is a five star affair, the insert and photos are fantastic.... there's nothing more to say. BUY THIS ALBUM if you even remotely like Nick Cave. You won't be disappointed.
Exactly what we love Nick Cave for.......2004-01-30
There's so many good moments on this album, like the slow entrance of the snare drum on 'Long Time Man' and the lapse into chorus on 'Your Funeral... My Trial'. It's a dark, brooding piece of gothic poetry full of sex, violence, humour and most of all, love. It's no wonder Nick Cave inspires such admiration and loyalty in his fans - he's supremely talented and possibly the coolest person on the face of the earth.
This is one of his best releases, along with 'Let Love In'. Pick it up - it's a hard listen but it drills itself into your skull after a few listens.
The height of an amazing career.......2002-12-31
Some artists are good enough that to label one work as their best says more than a lot. Nick Cave is by all means one of them. And 'Your Funeral...My Trial' is that golden release. Beginning with the slow title cut, it moves it's way through track after track, sometimes menacing, sometimes violent, sometimes beautiful, and always thought provoking and dark. Highlights? Honestly, all of them. Warning, this album is Nick's least accesable and that says a lot too. But after a few good listens, it works it's way into your brain and it's the best thing since ever- I promise.

hmmm.......2006-07-13
I read someones review saying that this album had the best screaming u have ever heard. I think you are out of your f***ing mind. This guy of Funeral Of A Friend sounds like a whiny little b****. Sounds like a 7 year old girl. This guy cannot scream at all. Well the album sounds nice good guitar riffs. Thats why it gets 3 stars
Amazing! 2nd best in my Opinion! FFAF rock so much!.......2006-06-23
This CD is so good and is their second best in front of hours. This years most open heartbreak is my favourite song by them and also of all time by anyone. It is so amazing along with the rest of the CD and every song period by them. FFAF are easily my favourite band and they will never turn into a bad one.
AWESOME and soooooooo GOOD!
5 stars
Their best to date.......2005-11-17
FFAF's recent albums are definately less aggressive than this, which
I think has been detrimental to their popularity/respect in the indie scene, going off on a tangent sorry. Every song on Seven Ways... is awsome. Great riffs, melody, rythm, and at times good lyrics. It was a mistake to re-record a lot of the songs on this album for later releases, the sound of Seven Ways... was what they should of stuck with.
Seven Songs Five Stars.......2005-08-06
Funeral for a Friend's "Seven ways to Scream Your Name" is a masterpiece. That's it, a masterpiece, that you must check out right now. Also it's an EP. Every song is awesome but Red is the New Black, Escape artist Never Die, Kiss and Makeup, and Getaway Plan are the better of the seven songs. I do not regret spending money on this CD, neither will you.
This isn't an EP, it's a masterwork........2005-06-23
I don't care about they EP's usually suck rule. This is the best EP I have ever heard! It surpasses everything they have done past this. It's just an awesome cd!
Go pick it up at FYE for 11 bucks if you like hardcore or emocore or the like. it's a steal of a purchase. Even though there's only 7 tracks on here, every track is truly a dream.
I cant think of much bad about this album.

A gorgeous masterpiece; my favorite CD all year!.......2005-11-29
Emily Van Evera is the Penelope Rich of the 21st century... beautiful, brilliantly gifted, and a scrupulous steward of those gifts. Her voice is pure magic, passionate and fiercely intelligent, both elegant and sensual. She is more than musician - she's a complete actress, portraying the meaning embedded in each word. Her voice is consistently masterful, precise, like a bell ringing in a cathedral. The way she nails each pitch, and inhabits it, and sustains... and sustains... is delicious.
The arrangements for this recording are impeccable. Even the running order seems perfectly organic. The scholarship behind the entire project is thorougly engaging, a gripping story artfully told. Van Evera's liner notes describe each piece with meticulous eloquence. The material traverses a wide variety of moods from the playful "Pretty Woods" to the sexy "In Fields Abroad" to a lullaby so tender and gentle it is almost whispered. I can't pick a favorite track: right now it's a three-way tie between "Deceitful Fancy", "The Thrush", and "Sweet Stay Awhile". Whatever she is singing, Van Evera's voice is always lush, haunting, thrilling.

Actual Soundtrack is great!.......2004-02-26
I think the previous reviewer got hold of the 20 minute cd of the score that was sent to academy members for consideration of an oscar - not the complete soundtrack with tracks as listed here.
disappointed.......2004-01-09
I loved the music in the movie...the soundtrack did not include all the upbeat music, just 20 minutes of the dreamy tune of the funeral/tai chi scenes. Very disappointing!

Customer Reviews:
Glorious sound in a glorious space.......2005-10-04
As I have had a long personal relationship with both Washington National Cathedral and John Fenstermaker, the conductor of this disc, it would be difficult for me to find anything critical to say about it. The sound brings back memories, but that's another story. The balance of forces - an immense organ, a very large choir (two combined, actually), and a brass band - is superb for a recording in a space notoriously difficult to get a balanced sound in. I was particularly interested in the addition of the brass band to things like Finzi's "God is gone up," which (as far as I know) was not originally scored to include it. It's a big, glorious sound in a big, glorious space, but also has some more contemplative moments (e.g. Palestrina's "Sicut cervus" and Tallis's "If ye love me" ) and the unusual treat of about 45 seconds of carillon music (I'd have liked more!) at the beginning. Consider this CD an ESSENTIAL addition to the library of any fan of Anglican church music at its best.
A truly essential recording.......1999-07-21
This is possibly the best album ever recorded by a men and boys choir. Every fan of choral work owes it to themselves to search out and buy a copy of this CD. Every single composition included is unforgettable and moving. Try to find a copy however you can -- you won't regret it. Recorded as a celebration of the completion of Washington National Cathedral in 1991, this CD is an impressive achievement in and of itself. Famous choral works are balanced perfectly with lesser-known, Nathional Cathedral-affiliated composers, all adding up to an enlightening and highly enjoyable listening experience. Be sure to listen to the powerful majesty of the Cathedral's Great Organ, displayed on this recording in all its ground-shaking grandeur.
