From January 2000 to June 2002, Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong laboriously pored over loops and samples, collecting synth squeals and snatches of howling guitar and, naturally, writing songs. Aided by raging rapper Rob Aston, he's put it all together to form this often intriguing and strangely beguiling side project. The opening's not promising. With the death-riff of "Romper Stomper" followed by the urban R&B and chanted party-rock chorus of "Tall Cans in the Air," Armstrong flails badly. But then his Clash obsession kicks in once more. This London-Kingston-California hybrid is thoroughly weird but oddly touching. It rings out in "Weigh on My Mind" and "Diamonds and Guns," with its Sex Pistols-inspired marching intro, rollicking piano, and Stones-like woo-woos, while the closing "Down in Oakland" is an enthusiastic take on the Clash's later spaghetti-western reggae. These, and Armstrong's sonic experiments, provide interest, with adrenaline pumping from searing punk-metal bursts. Though Aston's outbursts are often confrontational in the most predictable and tedious sense, Transplants is something new. --Dominic Wills

Diamonds and Guns = best track on entire album.......2006-08-17

Well, what can I say about The Transplants? Not much. Highlights include "Diamonds and Guns", and "California Babylon". ("Diamonds and Guns" was cleverly used for a shampoo commercial, hence its intro being very familiar.) This band has a much better sound when the vocalist is singing and not making weird attemptings at trasher metal when his background music isn't supporting him in that fashion. Still, it's good music to put in the background if you're trying to get in the mood to rock out, but maybe this should be a prelude for something better to come. Your choice.

Not for purists..........2006-05-07

Simply put, it's not Rancid, don't expect it to be and you'll probably like it, unless you have an aversion to anything rap. Overall, I think this is a great, though short album. The mixture of punk and rap-rock/underground hip-hop is something I really liked. Definately refreshing when compared to the garbage that the radio has been playing as of late ("weh! weh! I'm a rich kid trying to sound like I have low budget equipment"). Tim's laidback vocals are contrasted greatly by Rob's enraged rapping screams. Theres some good guest vocals as well from Davey Havok from AFI and Brody from the Distillers. I'm not a fan of Blink but, Travis Barker's druming on the album was quite amazing. The other musicians who contrubute aren't too shabby either. From the nice bass grooves atypical to much punk to the piano/keyboard backing in Diamonds and Guns.

Only a single track that I didn't really like, D.R.E.A.M., a more rappish song with heavy synth and less emphasis on the guitar. And thats still a great track, just not musically what I like. I've heard good things from my neighbor and others that like that sort of music.

Great CD, definately worth a listen. Sadly the new one is on one of the Big Four so, I'm not going to be picking it up. Not for thinking they are "sell-outs" but simply because I'm not gonna support companies that I see as ethically devoid. If thats not a problem for you, I'd go ahead and pick that one up too as I'm sure its quality as well.

Enough said about what I described. It seems Tim's crybaby liberal image has turned him more into the plankton he once evolved from. Avoid buying at all cost. Check out Life Won't Wait the last masterpiece Tim made before he went home crying to mamma.

BEAT UP, KEYED UP; LETS ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!.......2006-01-25

This album is going to one day be a classic. I don't care what anybody else says. The story about how that roadie guy teamed up with the guy from RANCID and the other guy from BLINK 182, or whatever. You know what I'm talking about. It is the perfect mix of Gangster/metal/punk/rap/rock fusion. Is that too hard to understand? Well, heres the deal kids. This one came onto the market back in 2001, shortly after the whole, you know, scare. I was working at a local deli when I first heard the single DIAMONDS AND GUNS. I thought, MAN! This is some pretty damned catchy stuff! It took a while before I went out and bought this piece, but MAN! I love it. Its that type of hard edged, RAW stuff, that makes you want to find all the people that have ever done you wrong... AND BEAT THE LIVING CHRIST OUT OF THEM!!!! Now, I have read all of the reviews for this, and I can't believe how many people really hate this stuff. I think just about every song on this 45 minute CD is GREAT! I think my two favoorites are DJ DJ ("we don't need anyone, we sure as hell don't need you") and SAD BUT TRUE which is sort of a sad song, yet happy at the same time... if you've had a few close friends who have died, maybe you can understand better.
Now, its like four and a half years since this CD made any sort of waves, the band has even released a follow up, which, truthfully, I haven't really heard yet.. but, I just want to make sure, that since I consider this, such a good album, that my review gets posted somewhere in this AMAZON madness.
Definatley a CD I will refer to years down the road.

I say it alot, but....you'll either love this or hate this........2005-11-28

Rancid fans will probably hate it. I never thought Rancid were that great of a band, they had their moments, but just tried way too hard too often. Tim Armstrong has really developed on Transplants though, and this album contains his best songwriting to date (haven't heard the newer album yet). Just about every track is a winner, this is one of those albums you can just throw on and let it go. It still cracks me up that Diamonds and Guns is on a shampoo commercial, hilarious.

Rarely is a side project equal to the member's primary outfit, but the Transplants subvert that long and wisely held opinion. Named because they are indeed musicians transplanted from other bands--Blink 182's skin beater Travis Barker, Rancid's guitarist and singer, Tim Armstrong, and former AFI roadie Rob Aston make up the line-up--but much to their credit they didn't bring much baggage from their rather high profile musical units except maybe just the smallest throwback to mid-career Rancid on the confrontational and rather bleak "American Guns." But that's really a creative blip, instead the band members display a contagious and clubby party ethic, rather like the Stone Roses before the end of Madchester years with a buzzy menacing guitar and some superb Keith Moon-ian drumming underpinning everything. Instead of promoting punk revivalism, "Haunted Cites" is a compendium of what the band members listen to on their off hours, fusing their love of dancehall, metal, Philly soul, reggae and hip-hop into this rhythmically solid and lyrically adventurous follow-up to their standout 2002 debut. Any band that can name check Blackie Lawless in their first song, and then go on to create such luscious vintage soul, sounding like a reincarnated Stylistics on the chillingly beautiful "What I Can't Describe" deserves to be on the express elevator to the top of the charts. And that's even before you take into account their sardonic paean to hedonism on "Gangsters and Thugs," with it's charmingly bone-headed chorus "Gangsters and thugs/Criminals and hoods/Some of my friends sell records/Some of my friends sell drugs." --Jaan Uhelszki

Even Worse than The First.......2005-09-27

Come on Tim, why are you doing this? you are a musical genious! you played in Operation Ivy! come on man! what's happening! This album, the second album in the history of the transplants is even worse than the first, congrajulations! I didn;t think that was possible! Everything is bad here. Tim went even lower than RANCID, trying to make his voice sound "punk" and ruined his vocal work. It is all a bunch of screaming, croaking, and clicking. Instrumentally, this album may be amongst the worse ever made. Infact, their drummer sounds like a beginner who's been playing for like a year. Tim's guitar level stays about the same, but the bass player is teribble. Tim Armstrong used to play music with exellent musicians, amongst them Matt Freeman, who in my opinion is one of the best of our time. Now the bass player, who's name I haven;t bothered to look up is just as bad as the drummer. I shamefully rate this album 1 star and pray that one day Tim Armstrong will once again take up his guitar, realize what a loser he's bieng right now, remember Operation ivy, and once again become kick ass.

the transplants lowerd down on the screaming unlike the first cd.And most of the songs are amazing, 2 or 3 songs lack excitment and are boring.Otherwise 9.1/10

More solid than the 1st.......2005-08-04

The thing that attracted me to this band in the first place was Travis. He is my favorite drummer and I knew he would never dissapoint and that he'd bring something special to any band he's in. After that 1st impression I discovered that the Transplants are very versatile and the vocals and melodies are very strong. The 1st album was great but the production was a tad bit rough as it was recorded in Tim's basement and Travis only had 5 hours to record drums. This record is a lot more polished and the vocals have improved.
Not Today-7/10 A good opening punk track that gets u pumped for the rest of the cd. This song does get repetitive and a little boring after a while.
Apocalypse Now-8/10 This song brings in the electronic elements which I'm not really fond of. But since there is a nice mix of electronics and real instruments I'm ok with that. Good rapping and a good rock chorus.
Gangsters and Thugs-8/10 The 1st single is really all electronics. But since it has a great melody and good rhymes, I can't help but to give it 8.
What I Can't Describe-7/10 This song is completely different fron the rest of the cd since it is pure hip-hop with a little bit of funk and soul. I like the melody but the song's a little too ghetto for me. Not a real heavy beat or anything.
Doomsday-8/10 I like where they were going with this song. There's a swing beat with solid vocals and interesting instrumentation. I just think they should of took the musical idea further instead of the focus being on vocals most of the time.
Killafornia-10/10 One of my favorites. I love the beat and the attitude of the whole song. The guy from Cypress Hill sounds amazing and the track just flies. I wish I saw them play this at Warped.
American Guns-9/10 Damn catchy song. Not too fast or heavy of a song, just fun. I've had this stuck in my head a lot.
Madness-8/10 This is also a fun song. Cool instrumentals, just not as memorable as American Guns.
Hit the Fence-9/10 Basically a short rap song with an awesome beat. This stands out to me cuz Travis puts a pretty simple cadence into a song to make it bounce and sound amazing.
Pay Any Price-7/10 I'd say the worst sounding song production wise on the album. Not very catchy and they sound like they don't care about what they're singing. Pretty cool instrumentals with a kind of lazy, beach vibe.
I Want It All-10/10 Another one of my favorites. I love the hand claps and the beat through the whole song. A really fun, party kinda song.
Crash and Burn-6/10 This in my opinion is the worst song on the cd. It sounds like a bad No Doubt song with the reggae feel with all electronics. The vocals are the best part of this song but still not that great. I'd say a bad way to end the album.
Overall this is a good album. I've grown to really like Rob's rapping style. It has different songs for any mood you're in, which is always good for when you're trying to find something to listen to. They are also awesome live. Travis changes a lot of the parts to make it a lot more interesting. The compositions are also more complicated live and they just put on a good show.

Blackplants?.......2005-08-03

This is the sweetest hip hop cd ive heard,....oh except that little fact that hip hop is crap.Ive always backed tim and now i must say i doubt myself if i can even like him anymore. Now on to the main issue.... Skinhead rob. If i was him i would seriously consider suicide.i despise skin head rob with every ounce of my being and especially my teetee. He is a fat waste of space. I cant wait till the next T-plants cd where tim and skinfag rob are on the cover with gold teeth and dredds. Wicked style. lates . ...... and get ready to see a wet bird fly at night.

Great Album, and a TON of top level tards underrating it............2005-07-05

First off, "Tristan" should legally change her name to "tard". Im not kidding. Whining about this CD and your closed mind not being able to grasp it is one thing, Saying that Lars and the Bastards "Viking" CD was the worst thing out in 2004 is altogether ignorant. Viking is hands down the BEST CD of 2004, and brought back old skool, kick ass, in your face punk while your idols Yellowcard and Good Charlotte continued to pollute the airwaves. Listen to 1 percent and Maggots on Viking, and attempt to deny the GENIUS guitar work. Knucklehead.

On to "Haunted Cities":

The greatest thing about The Transplants is they really DONT GIVE A F**K what people think of them. They do what they do, and enjoy every second of it. In my version, the CD blasts off with "Not Today". Honestly, there is so much going on with every track that you really have to listen 3-4 times to appreciate the hell out of it. My girlfriend was so blown away from the first track alone that she had me play it again so she could soak in everything about the song.

And thats where the genius of the transplants comes in.....its punk, soul, hip hop, reggae, funk and rhyming. The feeble minds wont get or like this CD, because it simply asks your brain to actually process something unique, deep, and completely different than the usual mundane, droning garbage out there. The Transplants proved that they can't be labeled in the first CD, and they stay true to that on this one as well.

5 stars isnt enough-this CD will blow your mind if you take it ALL in and give it the listening time it deserves.

Tim also proves once again that he simply one of the most talented music cats on the planet.

Don't buy without reading!.......2005-04-07

I'm a fan of the Transplants with Tim Armstrong and this CD is NOT BY THEM!!! Their new album will be released May 2005. This CD is apparantly a greatest hits of a 70's punk band from Boston. From what I've read, they only released 1000 copies of this album and poor misinformed fans of the new Transplants like me are being hoodwinked into giving our money to a band we've never heard of. Trust me, you'll be pretty surprised when you get this! I e-mailed Amazon.com's customer service to ask them to please post some kind of notice stating that these are two different bands. At the moment there's even a "Buy with the Transplants ~Transplants and save!" button to make this even more tricky. Don't waste your money if you want the new Transplants. I think it's pretty sh**ty of the old Boston Transplants to sit around and laugh and collect another band's fans' money, too- FYI.

The original Transplants from the 1970's.......2004-04-27

This CD is by the band The Transplants who were from Boston,MASS.
It is not by the band who stole their name and are made up of big label musicians.I still remember seeing this band play in Boston back in 1978 or 1979.I used to hear them on the radio back when I was in college in Boston.For at least 5 years now I have been finding more references to this band who were one of boston's first punk rock bands.All of the songs were recorded DIY with a 4 Track in a loft and at a live show.there is 75 minutes worth of music which is a great deal.
I am really glad to be able to have the chance to hear this great jem from the past.Too bad that they have to share their name with a bunch of corporate rockers who bear no resemblance to this bands unique and cool approach to being original and punk rock.
The founder of the band is Jordan Kratz and he is still involved in Punk Rock music.you can check out his band Big Meat Hammer who are the oldest going punk band in Maine.

Grossly underrated!.......2006-08-24

Without a doubt, Haunted Cities is in my opinion one of the most underrated albums of the last 5 years. Now I totally understand that The Transplants are one of those bands with no grey area. Either you love them, or you hate them. For those who hated the first album, I have no doubt that you will feel the same about their sophmore effort. However, if you were a fan of the Transplants debut, I truly feel that this is an album that you can appreciate, given the chance. While Haunted Cities does not supply the amount of classics that their debut did, the album as a whole is better. Aside from the the incredibly dull "What I can't Describe" and the obnoxious "Killafornia", every track is dope. Tim's voice sounds different than it used to, but after a couple of playthroughs you begin to understand and appreciate it. Skinhead Rob has improved (though that is not saying much) and Barker continues to keep your head nodding. If you bought this album and listened to it once, please put it back in. If you've never bought it, give it a shot, and listen with an OPEN MIND. You will not be dissapointed.

(3.5 would have been more fair)

ok. i'll admit it, i loved the 1st transplants cd - it was punk inspiration fused with anger and great hooks - even rob aston, who im not a big fan of, filled the cd with energy and life.

The second cd, haunted cities i do like. i like it. i don't love it. this is because from the punk with subordinate hip-hop music they had, they have reversed it, so its hip-hop with punk extras. I can't be annoyed at the transplants for changing their musical direction, because if no-body did that, then music would be boring (and the transplants are NOT boring.)

here's how i rated each song:

Not Today - 5 / 5 this is probably the best song on the cd, it could have come straight off of the self titled debut, and sounds like it.

Apocalypse Now - 4/5 - predictable chorus, but a rousing, armstrong led song

gangsters & thugs 4/5 - another good song, one of the best on the cd.

what i can't describe - 2/5 - my least favourite song on the cd, its r & b, not even hip hop.

doomsday - 4/5 i really like this song, good chorus

killafornia - 3/5 hip hop - but a good song, i like it infact, but it does NOT fit in with this cd.

American Guns - 5/5 - excellent punk song, great hook with the line "american guns, american guns"

madness - 4.5/5 - excellent song, but made by armstrongs chorus

hit the fence - 3/5 - abrasive rap by aston, armstrongless.

pay any price 4.5/5 - another good song, made by tim armstrong

i want it all 3.5/5 - slowish, not my favourite

crash and burn - 4.5/5 - great hook on the chorus, good song all round

without - what i cant describe & killafornia (notice armstrongs vocal absence from these two songs) this would have been an excellent cd.

hit the fence is this cd's romper stomper, with doomsday the equivalent of california babylon, not today replacing tall cans in the air, gangsters and thugs in for dj dj.

The orignal is the best, but this follow up is good too, andi have listened to it many times, but would be better without What I cant describe, killafornia (which i actually like as a song, but does not fit in with the cd) and i want it all.

I agree with the majority of reviews I read, this album was a let-down. I really enjoyed the first one. But this album was just... I couldn't get into it I guess. No real flow in the songs. Too many rap cameos. I can listen to it but I always have to put in the old one to redeam my respect for the Transplants.

Big let down........2006-03-20

I absolutely loved their self titled album but what the hell happened with Haunted Cities has left me speechless.

I can't be bothered typing up a huge review. You might like it, you might not. I found it to be pretty hit and miss at the best of times. I'm just glad they broke up before they made anything worse.

Everybody who's writing those "I was eargerly anticipating the 2nd album, but it's crap etc etc" reviews, forget that EVERYONE when they first heard the Transplants, were slightly nonplussed - admit it. Haunted Cities - Just more innovation & grooves.

hilarious.......2006-05-10

Come on... how can you not love this? It seems like some of the rock fans here just aren't getting down with the "screwed & chopped" thing. I mean, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WASTED ON PRESCRIPTION COUGH SYRUP WHILE LISTENING TO THIS. Of course it doesn't take that much skill to do this to an album, but if you're honestly as drunk as you're supposed to be while listening to this, you shouldn't care. Mowing the lawn doesn't take much skill either, but hey, the grass looks better that way.

The People's Champ just wants you to get slizzard and listen to "the first rock album ever to be screwed and chopped". That's really funny. And stupid. Why so much hate? I was rocking to this, sober even.

Do Not Buy!! Terrible!!.......2006-04-10

I enjoyed both Transplant releases esp Haunted Cities but this 'remix' release is shockingly horrible. So bad I can't even listen to it.
Slow the record down and do a few scratch dropins and thats about it. It's so bad, I thought it was a 'fake' release until I saw it here. Avoid like the plague. If you want remix, go buy some Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, NIN, anything but this.

This is the story of the demise of the Transplants.
I love the Transplants. For all of Rob Aston's shortcomings, he, Travis Barker and Tim Armstrong created a true gem when they released "Transplants" a few years back. Someone said that Transplants were trying to leech from the "success" of rap. No...it was just something Tim had been working on in his basement for years. Then they came out with "Haunted Cities," which as someone pointed out, was mediocre, but did have a few standouts.
Then along came The People's Champ. Idiot.
I don't even know how to start with this abortion of music. First of all, Paul Wall has zero talent. I could screw and chop any god damn song with my computer and none of the expensive equipment or gay ass teeth. You want proof? Go ahead and contact me.
Second of all, when you screw and chop something, it doesn't even come out good. I don't know why people enjoy these pieces of crap, because it's not even good on rap. It's not like Paul Wall can't do rock, he can't do rap. All he does is SLOW IT DOWN (And I don't know why that makes it sound good, because it makes it boring and the singers/rappers sound like retards) and then he takes one little bit, CUTS it, and re-inserts it to fit the beat. And he does the same procedure for EVERY SONG. There's no variation or creativity involved. Oh, and on "What I Can't Describe" (Which is by far the worst track on the normal album) he repeats the same line three times. THREE TIMES.
And these songs should have never had that treatment. This CD is for people who like dying a little inside every time they listen to an album. I hope that Tim had nothing to do with this (he was never mentioned in any interviews or anything). However, if you enjoy brain damage, Travis and Rob are starting a group with Paul Wall called Expensive Taste.
DO NOT BUY THIS ALBUM. PICK UP "THE TRANSPLANTS," THEIR DEBUT.
R.I.P. Transplants. This was the nail in your coffin.

Ugh..........2006-01-19

I was a fan of "Haunted Cities" for a while until I heard this. Seriously, it's not worth your money. You can get the exact same effect as on this album by opening up Sound Recorder in Windows and hitting "Decrease speed", I kid you not. There's nothing new or exciting about this, except that the album is a bit longer because every song is slowed down. I'd recommend the original "Haunted Cities", I guess, but I wouldn't even GIVE this chopped and screwed album to someone.

Transplants with a bit of Texas sound........2006-01-11

I bought this cd to see what it sounds like and I was very impressed . Paul wall did a nice job slowing this down . This is the first rock album to be chopped and screwed and I think its very good . I hope to see other rock albums chopped and screwed in the near future . The best songs on this album are "Gangstas and thugs" , and "What I cant describe" with the booya tribe .

don't believe the hype (the guy below...), for this is the awesome song from the shampoo commercial with the chick with the really long hair... i thought it was only a commercial song but it is the transplants, an overall decent band, but NOTHING beats the catchy hook of Diamonds and Guns. it's PERFECT! and now me and my pop tarts are gonna go buy the album! woo!

definetely not rancid.......2003-04-10

i thought this might sound a bit like rancid seeing as how tim armstrong is playing guitar and singing. It is NOTHING like rancid, and that would usually be a bad thing, but in this case it isn't. Tim's guitar is pretty similar to Rancid, but when he sings, it's totally different. I really like diamonds and guns. When I first heard it, I loved it, and I still do. Everyone who's anyone knows it now too, which is good because I don't meet blank looks when I mention it. There are only 2 problems - 1) the rap. I don't like rap. That's all. 2) Diamonds and guns is suddenly the theme tune for some shampoo or something as I noticed when the adverts were on on p-rock (a music channel by the way - they probably don't have it in America). This is a bad thing as it means that it is possible that all the peoiple who are noboby (pop-tarts) will soon know it and it will be number one, and I will feel so cheated.
