5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars eclectic collection of chanber music.......2007-05-12

the ahn trio rocks! along with the brodsky quartet, the kronos and other contemporary chamber groups, they combine a modish look with formidable classical technique that they use to assail a variety of melodies. some of the melodies are created specifically for them---so these young ladies are doing very well for themselves.

and they serve the music so well. each piece requires a different approach--evazen's 'diamond world' is sweet and lovely with a contemporary pop feel, piazzolla's tangos are spiky and rhythmic, for example--and they get it.

as much of a treat as this cd is, the real treat would be hearing these women live. i'm sure they turn it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2004-10-02

The Ahn sisters have a lot of talent and that talen is shown in this CD. My personal favorite is their rendition of "The Heart Asks Pleasure First (from The Piano)". It is just beautiful!!

For me, the true test of music is how it makes me feel while I listen to it. When I listen to this CD, it makes me feel alive!!! It makes me hunger to listen to other CDs that the Ahn Trio have made. I'll be picking those up soon.

5 out of 5 stars Ahnbelievable!.......2002-12-18

These sisters cook with classical ingredients and have found in Kenji Bunch a composer who understands their dynamic and presents them with material that encourages them to expand their considerable talents. There is an attitude here that came off as a bit unbridled on the first CD, TRIOS, and may have set them against the mainstream of classical interpreters. That's a very good thing indeed, for having broken that stranglehold on how things should be played, they have managed to add a bit of steam to the chamber room. Sure it has to do with fashion and sensuality, but it did back in the day, when Wolfgang, Ludwig and Robert and Clara were heating things up. It all got too mannered afterwards, so when artists like the Ahns, or Kennedy, or any other adventurous soul upends the conventions, it is easy to jump on the surface differences as a way of avoiding dealing with the substantive issues at hand.
To my ears, they provoke the listener in what seemed like too comfortable assumptions about Piazzola, infused interest and intrigue into Bernstein where little besides Broadway and Americana star excess existed before, and have taken a Pat Metheny/David Bowie piece and brought classical drama to a terrific composition. Both writers should be duly flattered and impressed by the interpretation. And as I mentioned, with Bunch, they have a writer best suited to their own dynamic.
I am sure it helps that a set of twins are playing with their sister. There is a telepathy here that indicates they know when they are going to leap off the conventional cliff, and so the others respond by catching them in mid air. This disc makes for seductive and exciting listening. Listening to the Bosendorfer ring off the sensuality of the cello and the passion of the violin and that unbridled element is a source of wonder and enchantment.

5 out of 5 stars These gals just wanna have fun..........2002-07-11

I do hope the cover of this CD doesn't scare away "serious" classical lovers! This is definitely classical. It's a collection of shorter classics, but that sure doesn't mean it's aimed for those with short attention spans like one reviewer suggests. This music is, to quote, "charged and alive"! A lot of "today people" who are leery about classical music are likely to find themselves wound up in music especially composed for the Ahn trio by such composers as Henji Bunch and Eric Emazan. Diverse composers such as Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla and Leonard Bernstein are included, and most diverse of all, perhaps, is David Bowie.

These gals touch all the basses and show that there is indeed life in classical music.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2002-05-12

The Ahn Trio was here in small-town, Bremerton, WA. this evening, and I was fortunate enough to see in concert and talk with them after their fabulous show. Their musical performance is stunning, and their presences on stage is awesome--they bring the audience to them...they are free with talking with the audience. If ever you get the chance to see them, it is definitely worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mod-Punk.......2005-11-13

I'm pretty new to The Jam, but I knew that Paul Weller was considered a Modfather, and being a Mod, I figured I should check them out. This is a really good CD. I had always heard that All Mod Cons was an essential album, but I actually prefer This is the Modern World. It's kind of like the Clash minus the reggae, plus the Kinks. It's good music and it suits me just fine. If you like a little pop in your punk, check out the Jam.

5 out of 5 stars Some people are just too ignorant to be embarrassed.......2005-04-16

"Now I'm pretty sure it's actually about "politically correct" liberals like the Clash and THEIR effect on Britain." - says Scott McFarland (below). This is undoubtedly the biggest pile of crap I've ever heard, whether about the Jam or the Clash. And yeah, I'm English and I don't want to be anti-American but Scott you're an idiot. I'm into both these bands, have been for years. But then I've also heard No More Heroes by the Stranglers described as their best ever album ... er no actually. Try Rattus Norvegicus, or Black & White. Anyway back to this CD. The Modern World,in common with No More Heroes, and Give 'em Enough Rope, suffers from the second album syndrome - good enough albums in their own right but inevitably compared to and failing to live up to classic first albums. Even though In The City was, let's say a little naive. All Mod Cons is the album that well and truly set the Jam on the road to greatness. It's always been my favourite album so perhaps I'm biased. It's also the one with the memories, if you know what I mean. If you don't, I feel sorry for you. Anyway. Great band, great album. If you don't buy it, beg, borrow or steal it, and when you do - play it to death.

5 out of 5 stars Undeniably Great Album.......2003-09-06

The Jam, even at their worst were one of the greatest British bands of all time. All Mod Cons is The Jam at their best. Starting out with a tour-de-force of classic hits, and only slowing down for the sincerely beautiful "English Rose," the first half of this CD takes no prisoners. Not losing any momentum afterwards whatsoever, the album barrels into classic song after classic song and closes things with "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight," quite possibly the best example of the Jam's undeniable ability.

4 out of 5 stars Great Passionate Rock Music.......2003-01-25

"This is the Modern World" finds the band loosening the reins on their sound, opening things up a bit and moving away from any punk orthadoxy. The results are impressive. By my count, about half the tracks here are well-written and pretty timeless. One of the best is "Standards". I used to hear it as an overly-melodramatic song about the effect of right-wing fascists on Britain. Now I'm pretty sure it's actually about "politically correct" liberals like the Clash and THEIR effect on Britain. "Life From A Window" is an especially beautiful song. The band and Weller are developing their style; big perfect guitar riffs are in evidence, slick energetic playing is well in evidence, and Weller's vocals cut across the music with a healthy degree of soulfulness and traction.

"All Mod Cons" was a big hit album in the UK, but impresses me less. Weller's songs here just aren't all that great, to my ears. Still, there are moments of greatness. Check out the creeping guitar figure at the heart of "Mr. Clean", which seems to have inspired Kurt Cobain and "Come As You Are". Check out the killer riff of "Billy Hunt". Check out the adrenaline rush of "A Bomb in Wardour Street".

5 out of 5 stars Poignant lyrics, tight songwriting, hard-rocking.......2001-05-24

Many people compare the Jam with the Clash, and there are some parallels. The Clash were probably a little more flamboyant, daring and agressive, while the Jam were probably better musicians, with a bit of a more subtle take on things. Also, whereas the Clash drew on reggae and ska, the Jam drew more on soul and 60's rock. Still, like the Clash, the Jam just wrote so many well-crafted, hard-rocking, touching songs, with intelligent lyrics that covered a wide range of subjects, and without much musical excess. Also, I think the great thing about Paul Weller's lyrics with the Jam is that he really makes you think about the questions he's asking--and he doesn't offer you easy answers or slogans that look cool on a t-shirt. What's the proper balance between maintaining your ideals, and doing what you have to do to live in the real world? That's something everybody has to answer for themselves--the important thing is to think about it. These two albums are both great, with The Modern World perhaps being slightly harder, and this is just a fantastic collection of songs. It's so sad that almost no new bands that are popular today picked up the mantle from bands like the Clash and the Jam. Whereas these bands drew from the best of rock history to form something new, personal and exciting, it seems like most of the rap/rock and boy bands have never heard of the Clash and the Jam, let alone any of their precursors, like 50's rock/rockabilly, The Beatles, Who, Stones, Dylan, Marley, Kinks, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Youth anthems delivered at breakneck speed!.......2006-06-30

Youth anthems delivered at breakneck speed! Years ago I read a review of the Jam and someone wrote that line--I forget who it was, though. Nevertheless, while we in the US had Donna Summer and the Bee Gees, the kids in the UK had the Jam. How disappointing for us. As the Jam never made it in the US, they never got any airplay, nearly no one knew of them, and it was VERY difficult to find their records. I did find "Modern World", though, and fell in love with it right off. The fast pace and good rockin' were what I liked. Some people have criticised this album as being a collection of leftover songs. I didn't care, the group rocked! I particularly liked "London Girl", which was a bit more pop, but it moved, and "Midnight Hour." These guys took that old R&B song and turned it into a real rock n' roll classic.
If you want an album that really rocks, get this one. The songs are just as enjoyable as they were almost 30 years ago. One caveat, the CD is missing a song that appeared on the LP--"All Around the World", which I think is one of the Jam's greatest songs.

5 out of 5 stars One of the 2 best JAM records ever with In the City ie their early stuff.......2006-01-12

I've met folks who weren't born until the 80's and have only heard later JAM. You gotta hear the first two albums, this being the second. There's classic JAM songs on it as great as any they ever did and there's no 'approximating Motown' sound on this.
'The Modern World' is so snappy, it stands the test of time magnificently.
I've always enjoyed 'London Traffic', very energetic.
The vocals on 'In The Street Today' are some of my favorite by the JAM. Generally, how well they interweave their trio is a marvel. GREEN DAY, NIRVANA and the JAM really show that with three guys you can make total songs that are fully formed and, that it doesn't happen that often. URINALS/100 FLOWERS and the MINUTEMEN also proved it beautifully.
'I Need You (For Someone)' reminds me that the JAM really isn't a punk band at all. Mod I guess and the occasional love song sorta proves it. Very nice.
'Here Comes The Weekend' is lyrically so applicable to us workin' stiffs. I cherish such a song whenever I can find it.
'Tonight At Noon' is a prime example of their harmony skills without ever bein' sappy or sugar pop.
If only they did this sort of cover job of 60's songs:'In The Midnight Hour'. Now I could listen to that all day. Just keep away from the horn section boys (later albums) though I love horn sections generally, the wilder the better (Ray Charles' 45 Great Songs 2xCD has some incredible blarin' horn songs).
Anyone who says this is a weak album, including the band, is bonkers. For me, and probably a buncha other punx, the earliest stuff is the best for the JAM and this is right in there. Go get 'em. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars Under rated greatness!.......2005-09-08

I don't know why everyone (including the band themselves) consider this the Jam's weakest LP. I think it's their second best effort (right after the masterpiece "Setting Sons"). The songs are more focaced and melodic than on "In the City". Plus, "Modern World" rocks out a lot more than "All Mod Cons" (which is also a great album). True, at the time, this LP wasn't too well received- it was recorded and released only MONTHS after their debut. It was thought to suffer from "second album shortage"- a common problem among late 70s punk bands. (The same was said for the follow ups of the Damned, the Dead Boys and Slaughter & the Dogs- all great albums today.) Even if you're not a hardcore Jam fan give "Modern World" a chance... right after "SEtting Sons"!

3 out of 5 stars Their Weakest Record.......2005-02-04

Sandwiched between two of The Jam's very best records (In The City and All Mod Cons) and featuring a batch of mostly half-realized tunes, Modern World is basically a let down. Not a bad album so much as a hastily assembled collection of b side-worthy material that never really takes off. Buy every other Jam album first (yes, even The Gift).

4 out of 5 stars Not Always Given It's Due Credit.......2001-02-26

As many are quick to point out, this album pails in comparison to the band's debut "In The City". That aside though, the album really isn't that bad. It's got a great amount of energy, and though the writing isn't as focused as other Jam albums, Paul & Co. still manage to knock out a few good tunes. Not necessarily there best, but definately not bad compared to so much else that was out at the time.

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

2 out of 5 stars Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

          Product Description

Santa Cruz flamenco guitarist el douje, a current member of the Mimicry group Fishtank Ensemble (look for their album in 2005!) and a former member of Don Salsa, has just released his debut solo album. Entitled Worlds Collide, it is a unique and bold mixture of traditional and modern styles. From jondo flamenco to modern day world fusion/drum and bass/techno, the flamenco guitar playing of el douje is what unifies and sets this album apart. Containing 13 original compositions, the songs on this record gracefully stretch the stylistic bounds of tradition, while looking to the possibilities ahead. Worlds Collide is a project many years in the making. From the original vision of combining flamenco and gypsy guitar with modern elements of electronic music, four years have passed. The musical offerings range from traditional flamenco styles such as bulerias, tangos and solea, to experimental combinations defying classification. Though el douje is a solo act, the album contains extensive collaborations with a wide variety of acclaimed and accomplished musicians. Dave Weckl (of Dave Weckl Band and Chick Corea Band) lends his drumming talent on several tracks, and jazz/fusion bass legend Tom Kennedy and his 200 year old double bass also appear on numerous tracks. Members of the ground-breaking gypsy fusion band Estradasphere round out the sound with bass, saxophone and violin tracks. Shamisen master Kevin Kmetz is featured extensively on the album, adding to the unique instrumentation of the compositions.
