4 out of 5 stars The album that showed a new, more mature, more confident band.......2006-10-21

This is the album where they went from a startup, raw, garage band to now, a more fully accomplished muscial force.

For their first 3 albums, there were plenty of chestnuts, a lot of angst and a lot of promise. It all came together in this more mature, polished effort.

The musicianship was far better and expanded beyond three chords, the arrangements were more complicated, the songs were longer, and there were more instrumental solos.

It is so ridiculous that they were called a punk band!

Bruce Foxton's bass is real muscular and mixed right out front (It seems like U2 utilized this sound for their band 5 years later) His playing for many of the songs established the main melody while Paul Weller's guitar slashes in and out of the songs. Bass fans should enjoy the unqiue (for the time) production of a bass player in a band having his instrument so prominently featured.

Standout songs are "girl on the phone" "thick as thieves" "little boy soldiers" "saturday's kids" "Smithers Jones" and "heatwave (an energetic yet unexplainable cover of the Motown song. all of these songs were so english, it's practically a concept album and then, out of nowhere, they do a r& b song. "Going underground" was not originally on the album, its an extra yet that is probably the best song on the cd.

The only drawback to this is how really, really Brittish the subjects of the songs were. This probably prevented American acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars Best of The Jam.......2006-03-21

This is in my opinion, the definitive work of The Jam.

This album is smarter than All Mod Cons, but also exerts more independence than Sound Affects. It finds the happy medium between the two.

This is 'The Jam' before they descended into a Paul Weller solo device, when Weller was restrained just enough to move past his tendency to just pay homage to his musical influences.

5 out of 5 stars With 9 Bonus Tracks, This Is The Jam's Finest Hour.......2005-03-14

The Jam's November 1979 release Setting Sons is generally considered to be one of their 3 best albums. Inexplicably, however, it is also considered to be the weakest of those three. The only reason for this seems to be that it is neither All Mod Cons (its predecessor) nor Sound Affects (its successor), their other two great albums. Sadly, this underrating of Setting Sons obscures the fact that it contains some of the band's best material and one of their finest singles. (Why only one? Because the 3 other brilliant songs from this era were released as singles but not featured on albums.)

Much of the underrating of Setting Sons can be attributed to the overrating - in hindsight - of their third album, All Mod Cons. The greatness of this album is probably confused to some extent with its significance. AMC was their great leap forward, and proof that their sophomore slump would not cause them to flunk out. So the importance of this album should not be underestimated, but neither should its greatness - bountiful though it is - be overrated.

Setting Sons was a highly anticipated album. Not only was it the follow-up to The Jam's breakthrough, it was also preceded in the eight months prior to its release by two top 20 singles - "Strange Town" and "When You're Young". While these songs would not appear on the new album, they did confirm The Jam's status as one of the more important bands in the UK at the time. When the album was finally released in November 1979, it reached #4 in the UK (and #137 in the US) and was accompanied by the band's highest charting song to date, the explosive #3 single "The Eton Rifles". It had been reported prior to release that the album would deal with the concept of how 3 childhood friends had changed as they became adults after a modern-day English civil war (described in the song "Wasteland"). In essence, it was to be a Weller-generation version of The Kinks album Arthur,or: The Decline and Fall of the British Empire. (The two albums do make very good companion pieces.) About half of the 10 songs on the record addressed this theme directly. But when listened to as a whole, only the first and last tracks -the latter being a cover of "Heat Wave" - seem to have nothing to do with the intended concept.

Setting Sons has been criticized for being too "mature", but since Paul Weller was only 21 when the album was released, perhaps "precocious" is a better word. The album kicks off with the gleefully playful - yet somewhat cynical - "Girl On the Phone". Then come the songs that form the core of the album's theme. The songs take on such issues as dissolving friendships, aging, war, and selling out. The anti-war track "Little Boy Soldiers" is particularly good, pre-dating the Falklands War by a few years and also containing the eerily prescient line "God's on our side and so is Washington". (I don't know if Margaret Thatcher ever said that, but Tony Blair probably has.) The remaining songs contribute to lesser degrees to the album's theme. Foxton's finest composition, "Smithers-Jones", is basically The Jam's version of The Kinks' song "Shangrai-La", with its tale of a middle-aged man who has worked his whole life only to see it amount to nothing. (It also has an instrumental nod to The Kinks' "Victoria" at the end.) "Saturday's Kids" vividly depicts the misadventures of contemporary British youth. Finally, "The Eton Rifles" is plucked straight from the papers, with Weller railing against snotty students' disrespect for workers.

Musically, The Jam is a formidable trio of players, and the fact that they are not virtuosos is part of their strength. Paul Weller is an extraordinarily capable guitar player. I know that does not sound like particularly high praise, but it is. He knows exactly how to craft his guitar work so as to give each song the distinctive flavor that made The Jam so unique. Be it chords, riffs, or solos, the patented Jam sound springs effortlessly from Weller's fingers, and never for a moment does he sound like a show-off. Bruce Foxton's bass playing is good enough to qualify him as what Jake Burns - his current band's lead singer - calls him: "one of the all-time greats". His trademark ominously punky bass lines give the perfect touch to "Private Hell" and "The Eton Rifles", and his punchy, more straightforward playing fills the space beautifully on "Girl On the Phone" and "Saturday's Kids". And while rock critics will forever struggle to find a non-perfunctory way to compliment drummers, the fact is that a band as energetic yet focused as The Jam needs the perfect backbeat to speed them up and slow them down. Rick Buckler fits this role to a T.

Paul Weller sings from several points of view on Setting Sons. At times, he is the 21-year old who he was in 1979 ("Girl", "Rifles", "Soldiers"). At others, he is an adult singing in the first person ("Thieves",
"Burning Sky", "Wasteland"). Finally, he is sometimes someone slightly older than himself commenting on the grown-ups around him ("Private Hell", Foxton on "Smithers-Jones"). The loss of ideals as one grows older is of particular concern to Weller: "we watched our ideals hopelessly unwind", "ideals are fine when you are young", "the smouldering ambers of yesterday". It is the loss of such ideals that leads to unhappiness later in life: "we're no longer as thick as thieves", "We'll watch the rain fall/Tumble and fall/Just like our lives". This unhappiness takes the forms of broken friendships, unhappy marriages, alienation from family, and unsatisfying work. While ideals may seem helpless in the grip of hard reality, it is only by sticking to them and making them a reality that one can avoid being stuck in a "Private Hell".

In the songs described above, Weller is singing from another's perspective. He does so beautifully, but hearing him sing from his own perspective is always a unique treat. He is at his cynical and punky best on "Girl On the Phone", "The Eton Rifles", and "Saturday's Kids". "Girl" has Weller commenting on how his fame has made him so recognizable that even a girl who he cannot identify knows his "leg measurements and the size of his c*ck". In "The Eton Rifles", Weller caustically spews his disdain for privileged students, ridiculing on their love of rugby, their ties and crests, their brand new shoes, and their "untamed wit". He knows damn well that the ivory towers will not protect them forever. "Saturday's Kids" finds Weller singing in a whimsical (and less cynical) tone about a group of youngsters he may be too old to be part of now, but to which he will always belong in his heart. He gets all the details right: the boys with their beer and football (soccer) games, the girls with their cheap perfume and discos, and their parents with their Capston non-filters. (And let's not forget the "v-neck shirts and baggy trousers", which come off in the backs of cars with predictable results.) The influence of Ray Davies clearly trumps that of Pete Townshend on this record.

The 2001 CD re-issue of Setting Sons features 9 very valuable bonus tracks. Individual singles were released as many as 8 months prior to and 4 months after the release of the album. All three of them - "Strange Town", "When You're Young", and "Going Underground", their first #1 single - are all included among the bonus tracks. Also included are the wonderful "The Dreams of Children" - the double A-side of "Going Underground" - and two indispensable B-sides: a version of The Who's "So Sad About Us" and the brilliant "See Saw" (the B-side of "The Eton Rifles"). The latter is particularly valuable not only because it is probably The Jam's best non-political, Who-inspired pop song, but because the only other place it is available on CD is the 5-disc box set. The re-issue is topped off by "Start!", the #1 single from the forthcoming Sound Affects LP.

All things considered, this version of Setting Sons is an ideal first purchase for a Jam newcomer. It captures one of the greatest post-Beatles bands ever at their youthfully energetic but tightly focused best. The newcomer could also opt for Snap! or Greatest Hits for a career overview, but for a snapshot of a terrific band at their peak, the 2001 re-issue of Setting Sons cannot be beat.

5 out of 5 stars My First Album.......2004-09-30

I still remember buying this album when it was first released...I was 12 at the time. All I can say is WOW....it knocked me over then and still does today. Living in the UK at the time with all the political turmoil etc. this album really hits home. Songs like Eton Rifles sum up the British class system perfectly......lyrics like "All that rugby puts hairs on your chest....what chance of you got against a tie and a crest" hit the nail on the head. Smithers Jones perfectly decsribes the pitfalls of the rat-race...."...Work 'till you die....'cos there's plenty more fish in the sea to fry". It's all great stuff. The whole album is a classic although "Thick as Thieves" is my favourite track. The production on the album is first rate and it's amazing that a power trio sounds like an orchestra.....the musicianship is out of this world. I would rate "All Mod Cons" and "Setting Sons" equal in terms of musical stature....IMHO "Setting Sons" marked a turning point in the band's direction. The song writing on this album is superb. If you haven't heard the album or just want to flash back to a more musically stimulating time go and find a copy. I still have my original LP (vinyl) with picture sleeve :-) Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Their best is now even better.......2004-05-29

The original "Setting Sons" LP was, in my mind, easily The Jam's best LP. While "All Mod Cons" and "Sound Affects" are classics, each suffers from problems with production and/or a couple of tracks of filler, and in the case of their otherwise phenomenal debut "In the City", we had a couple underdeveloped songwriting ideas here and there. But "Setting Sons" had no such problems. There was not a single track of filler here; even the cover of "Heat Wave" serves its purpose as joyous release after the very bleak portraits painted by Paul Weller's own pointed lyrics. The songwriting, musically and lyrically, is at Weller's peak. This is a semi-concept album about three boyhood friends who grow up and apart, a concept only the bravest rock and rollers would go for--in the machismo-fueled world of rock music it probably seems wussy to write all these songs about male friends--but it works brilliantly. Weller has a pretty bitter and bleak outlook on life on this LP, and his observations are cutting and poignant.

And the production emphasizes full-on rock power, with the drums, vocals, guitars, and bass seemingly ALL in the front. As such this may not seem as much as a "hooky" record as "All Mod Cons" and "Sound Affects" but, like any Jam LP, it is of course highly melodic. Paul Weller and co. also got really imaginative on this LP. After three relatively straightforward efforts, The Jam opted to experiment with such devices as Kinks-inspired multi-movement pop as in "Little Boy Soldiers" or using unconvential instruments, like the recorder on "Wasteland", or the full-on orchestral arrangement of "Smithers-Jones". And no matter what they try, it works. Unlike certain later songs (I'm thinking "Trans Global Express" here), the experimentation never seems excessive, pretentious, indulgent or forced.

So, this was their best. But now that there are bonus tracks, it's venturing dangerously close to rock and roll essential. The "Going Underground" b/w "Dreams of Children" single was their absolute peak, their finest A-side coupled with their finest B-side, and now it's on here, along with the other classic singles from the era, "Strange Town" and "When You're Young", and the original, power-trio version of "Smithers Jones". Seriously, if you long for classic, timeless rock music, please pick this up. You won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION!.......2006-11-01

DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION of SETTING SONS! One star for this CD version. Five stars for the music.

There is another version of Setting Sons on Amazon for $6 more but you get the bands best single (Strange Town) which was not released on the vinyl LP, PLUS the bands other single only release between All Mod Cons and Setting Sons (When You're Young), PLUS several other B-sides and single only versions of other songs. If you are trying to aquire all the Jam LPs on CD, you will miss those songs unless you own them on a compilation compact disc. Don't make the mistake I did. Good luck and happy listening.

5 out of 5 stars The Best album by the greatest band................................2004-10-08

Having discovered the Jam in 1981, sadly right before Weller disbanded the group. I saw them on MTV no less! with their video of 'Town Called Malice' and that was all I needed, I always loved the Clash, Kinks and 60's Who, but Weller & Co. had the right mix of punk, pop, smarts and musicianship to meld into arguably the greatest rock band, ever in five short years they produced six LP's three EPs and countless singles. All top notch quality, no throwaways, even their 'Rarities' CD is a gret listen. Anyway, getting back to Setting Sons, released in 1979, after the much ballyhooed classic 'All Mod Cons' and before their most successful "Sound Affects". This one, Weller penned as a comprehensive loosely based story told about three friends losing their way (who cares anyway, the songs are dynamic) this LP I believe contains their strongest material ever and holds up well even today, Side 2 (vinyl of course) reads like a masterpiece - Girl on the Phone, Strangetown, Thick as Theives, Private Hell, Little Boy Soldiers & Wasteland, throw in three classics from side one, Burning Sky, Saturdays Kids & the glorious rousing Eton Rifles and you have simply the best recording ever made, nothing beats it, maybe some come close, but if a power-pop/post-punk is your deal this is it.
Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Rock Recordings Ever.......2003-09-26

I picked this album up when it was released over 20 years ago. It blew me away then and it's impact has not diminished over time. While I expect great musicianship and hooks from the Jam, it is still, and will always be about the songs. Little Boy Soldiers, Staurday's Kids, Eton Rifles, Wasteland and Smithers Jones are gems.

4 out of 5 stars "From the drink that made us sický.".......2001-04-12

One of the Jam's inspiration's, The Who, put together their best album, Who's Next, from a failed concept work. This is also a failed concept work, but although it has some masterful songs, it falls well short of the effort by Townshend et al.

The good stuff is great - `Thick as Thieves', a paean to how friends grow apart as they grow up and older, is marvellous: tight energetic playing and lyrics which take the metaphor of the title and extend it to the song's end. It is also a remarkably mature and perceptive piece of work for a songwriter who was only just out of his teens when he wrote it.

`Private Hell' - `Eton Rifles' and `Saturday's Kids' are almost as good. But the rest doesn't quite come off. `Girl on the Phone' is a weak throwaway - while the band might have been waxing historical here, and nodding to their other 1960s inspiration, the Kinks, who opened their 1966 album with a similar song called `Party Line', this song should have been left on a B side somewhere. The `Little Boy Soldiers' suite shows what happens when quasi-adolescent rock stars overdraw on their intellectual bank balance - musical standards go out the window as pretension meets the callowness of youth. The track has some good bits, but is basically a not particularly profound burst of sloganeering.

`Wasteland' contains the beginnings of a great song, but it needs more work, and the heavy handed drumming on such a beautiful melody is a travesty. It's not that I don't like it - I do - but there is the germ of something much better here. And that can be said for the whole album. I'd like to give it three and a half, but half marks are out, so I'm giving it four - `Thick as Thieves' warrants the extra half star alone.

5 out of 5 stars best album ever. (period).......2000-07-01

The jam are one of the most intelligent bands of all time, behind only the Kinks in the insightfullness and forcefullness of thier lyrics. Like the Kink's "Arthur" album the Jam's Setting Sons is a combination of amazing lyrics and hot rock and roll. The Eton Rifles is probably the most frightening song ever, and Wasteland is probably one of the saddest.

5 out of 5 stars A Great British collection.......2005-10-05

This CD features several particular composers who have written pieces of music that are quintessentially British: Jeremiah Clarke, George Frideric Handel, John Stanley, John Eccles, Henry Purcell, William Corbett, Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and Thomas Arne. The pieces here are triumphant, celebrating that particular period of Empire when the British ruled vastly such that the sun never set upon it - one of the key elements of such triumphant music-making, particularly for the time, was the use of brass and trumpet. Some of the later composers included here draw on inspirations from these earlier times.

One of the featured performers on this collection is John Wallace, who was principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra since the 1970s; he founded the brass ensemble, the Wallace Collection, ten years later in 1986. In 2002, he became principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Wallace Collection gave their last performance shortly thereafter. However, the Wallace Collection lives on in performances on CD such as this one, performed with William Boughton and the English String Orchestra. Other tracks are performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alexander Faris and the English String Orchestra conducted by Stephen Darlington.

Pieces here are very familiar to anyone with an interested in British national composition -- pieces such as the Water Music by Handel are very famous, as are Holst's 'Planets' and Sullivan's (of Gilbert & Sullivan) 'Pinafore'; other pieces, such as Clarke's 'Trumpet Voluntary', are similarly famous even if their composers did not achieve the 'brand recognition' that Handel did. All of the composers here came from the period spanning the late 1600s to the late 1700s, when music was as often written for music halls and public performances as it was for royal events and commissions.

The performances here are uniformly upbeat and well played, with little by way of blemish save the occasional drop and surge in levels (as often becomes the case when recording music with sharp brass elements).

One can envision theatres full of people waving Union Jacks while this plays, and many of the pieces have a quality about them that speaks directly to the time and place of Britain.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Baroque music, buy it; it is excellent.......2005-06-29

If you like Baroque music, buy this 2 CD's BOX SET; it is excellent. Clarke, Handel, Purcell, Corbet and so on are very well played. The orchestration is very good, the quality of recording is excellent. Remember that Baroque music uses mainly a single trumpet, few other brass instruments, some woodwinds and very few drums. It is very easy, elegant and pleasant to listen. When I got married in 2003, I have chosen only Baroque music for the ceremony and the banquet because Baroque music is so lovely, so delicate and so sweet. Even if you have never heard or you think that you have never heard Baroque music, buy this CD; I tell you, you will not regret your choice because it is really an excellent CD. You have my words.

    5 out of 5 stars Hello, Hooray, It's A Very Nice Day..........2001-03-25

Beginning with All Mod Cons and ending with Sound Affects The Jam made three amazing albums in a row. Sandwiched in the middle, is the beautiful "Setting Sons". Excellent, creative, variety filled, and serious all easily describe this album. Though Paul Weller would later malign this album for it's slicker production(an odd accusation after forming the Style Council), his only true downfall here was trying to make this a full on concept album. That aside, the album features some of the band's best song writing as well as a triumphant experiment at an orchestral song, "Smithers Jones". The album is easily one of the band's best and a wonderful addition to any collection.

This particular release re-creates the original album packaging down to minute details. Besides the usual slipcase packaging, the manufacturers actually went as far as embossing the soldiers as well as the roses on the back of the album. The most extreme attn, to detail is paid to the track listing. There is actually a real sticker (just like on the original)listing the tracks, rather than printing them on the package. wow.

5 out of 5 stars The Jam at their best.......2001-12-27

"Setting Sons" is about the best The Jam ever did as far as consistency goes. Though each album has great tracks, especially my other favorite, "In the City," this one is more listenable because the songs sound more like they are part of a bigger composition (incidentally, this was intended to be a concept album, but the design fell through). I recommend the other version of the CD with more tracks. My first experience with the album came with what I believe is the U.S. version in which the first half of the album is the second half in the U.K., so I prefer it that way. "Burning Sky" is a beautiful song, and I think it makes a better opening than "Girl on the Phone," as well as "Smithers-Jones" which is a perfect follow-up to the opening track. The other way seems odd to me. This version also included "Strange Town," which would make any album a classic. This album has some incredible moments, and it's a shame that it does not get more recognition as a pivotal pop record, at least here in the U.S. where it gets no air play.

    4 out of 5 stars A really good record.......2001-10-21

I know that "All Mod Cons" will always be regarded as their masterpiece, but the follow up, "Setting Sons" is also very good and underrated in my opinion. Originally intended to be a concept album, only half the songs follow the story. Paul Weller continues in his storytelling mode throughout, and his narrative on "Private Hell" is powerful and a bit disturbing. Perhaps the slightly overpolished feel of the album production-wise is why Weller doesn't regard it as his favourite Jam album, but the quality of the songs can't be argued with.

    5 out of 5 stars The Jam's Best.......2000-01-28

This collection of songs from 1979 hit me during my junior year in college, and I was hard pressed to decide what to put on my turntable -- Setting Sons, or London Calling. Lyrically and musically, these two albums represent the artistic height of the Punk/New Wave music that started around 1975-76, and ended with the music-biz backlash of the 80's. Setting Sons is a rich collection of beautiful words and melodic harmonies, interlaced with some heart-thumping rock chords. What a band! What an album!

5 out of 5 stars This CD needs to be re-issued..........1999-09-23

This CD (LP at the time) was the first album that made me realize how important lyrics could be to the overall impact of music. I related easily to the "angst" and frustration Paul Weller filled his songs with. A cliche perhaps, but that's the way I felt at the time. It would be nice to get this album on CD.

    P.S.

I bumped into Paul Weller at Market City Cafe in Pasadena, CA around 1990. I bought him and his date a drink. My brush with greatness...
