Little Bit of Heaven
Editorial Reviews
Boston Globe
McComb writes very personally delivering deceptively plain lyrics in a lovely voice that glides from contralto richness to silvery soprano.
Billboard Magazine
Of Kaleidoscope album, "Tears into Laughter": "This is a remarkably well-written, well-played and emotionally moving album".

Incomparable Singer with brilliant choice of songs.......2007-04-15
I first heard John Gary in the early 70's. I loved him then and love hime now. His voice is so pure, unstrained and soothing. He does not need special music engineering like most singers after him to make a good sound. His choice of songs -even the Irish ballads are perfect for his voice (and my listening pleasure). None of the songs in his albums would sound as good when sang by the other singers of his time or now- I am sorry but I think he is a lot more pleasing to hear than Tony Bennet, Frank SInatra, etc. It makes one dream again- make life and love timeless no matter how old one has become. I feel like falling in love all over again everytime I hear him. I wish that he has continued to sing, perhaps he has but I just have not seen or heard of him for several years. Thank God for John Gary!!!! and Thank you Amazon for carrying his Songs!
Great Songs by the last of his kind.......2006-11-15
I've been collecting John Gary's music from the very beginning and have
nearly all his music on 'albums' since I first heard him when I was in
the Navy and I'm glad to see that these great songs of his have come out on CDs.
I was lucky to actually hear him at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Hawaii back in about 1976. It was a wonderful experience.

From an Irish Family.......2005-07-04
Being from a part Irish family, the Irish standards on "Little Bit of Heaven" were part of the culture, especially by John Gary. I was by FAR the baby, being weaned on the Beatles and beyond, but everybody else thought this was pretty close to ... well, a little bit of heaven. I'm only giving it 4 stars because some may find it "old fashioned", which it is - big string arrangements, etc. But, boy, this guy has a voice, and I think these songs were meant to be done like this.
Here I'll Stay....!.......2003-04-17
Thank you Amazon for making this CD available. This CD captures your heart and soul. -- Music to take with you - wherever you go! John Gary at his finest -- as always. These beautiful songs, fit for any occasion - --and this fine voice-- provide the setting for meditation/relaxation, or to just write a letter to someone... in need of a tender touch -- or just for YOU to enjoy - over and over again.
At Last!.......2002-03-15
I have two scratchy albums from the 1970s that I never thought I'd be able to find on CDs. Lo and behold! Amazon offered both on the same CD. You have no idea how happy I am to hear John Gary's glorious, effortless voice again.
It's great that you notify customers when a product becomes available. Thanks, Amazon!

Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24
If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.
Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26
This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.
The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.
There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.
This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.
This is a fun disc to have.
A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03
This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.
Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05
Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

Superb singing, superbly restored.......2003-09-08
This is, without question, the best restoration of monaural opera singing that I have ever heard, and it's one of my favorite collections of songs to boot. I've been looking for Leonard Warren on CD for years, and for the sea shanties in particular. Now I've finally found them, and they're the closest thing to a stereo recording of Leonard Warren that you will ever hear.
You will be astonished, not only with Mr. Warren's magnificent baritone, but with the incredible cleanliness of the disc. You won't hear a pop, scratch, or click in any of the sea shanties--remarkable, given that they were recorded in 1947. Yes, they are monaural, so they don't have as much "presence" as a stereo recording, but the orchestra, chorus, and Mr. Warren himself are as clear and as sonorous as if they were recorded today. Every note and nuance has been restored.
All historic CDs should be this good. Don't miss it!

Real Verdi singing.......2006-05-08
Thomas Hampson should be tied down and forced to listen to this great artist sing Verdi, THE WAY IT SUPPOSED TO BE SUNG. He would learn about phrasing, breath control, power, tone, artistry and drama all at the same time. Hampson can't carry Maestro Warren's scores for him.
Leonard Warren Had a Great Voice.......2005-11-02
I just read some reviews here that said the sound quality was not good on all the songs contained in this collection. Up to now I only have heard three of the songs on Disc 1...but they exemplify great singing. Those three songs from Pagliacci, The Barber of Seville, and La Traviata make this set worth buying in and of themselves. I read that Mr. Warren died at 49 years of age during an actual performance while singing on stage at The Metropolitan Opera House! That's quite a story! This set looks alittle expensive but I usually buy used---in this case $10 off the new price. I will listen some more to the rest of the set and ammend my review if necessary. But, for now, I'm very glad I purchased a sample of the beautiful voice and musical and dramatic artistry of Leonard Warren. Email:boland7214@aol.
A great collection.......2004-10-12
Leonard Warren was part of two great traditions: Firstly, from a tradition of American Baritones, featuring the likes of Robert Merrill, Cornell MacNeil, and more recently, Sherrill Milnes. Secondly, and sadly, from a tradition of opera singers who died when they should have been at the height of their powers: a list that includes Ettore Bastianini, Mario Lanza and countless others.
This collection shows the artistry of Leonard Warren. On the first cd, is the work most people would recognize Warren for, Rigoletto, Iago, with a few roles he didn't normally play thrown in, such as Escamillio, and most interestingly, Wolfram from Tannhauser.
The second cd is fun only if, like me, you like to hear opera singers singing, and singing well I might add, in a different medium. On this cd, Leonard Warren sings sea shanties, Irish songs, religious songs, all with that marvelous instrument of his. It was a side of Leonard Warren I Was excited to hear, to hear this American Baritone singing in English for once.
It's fantastic to see an artist of his calibre getting the recognition he deserves, and the two cds are an excellent purchase.
A magnificent collection.......2003-04-25
Warren was a superstar. His voice of supreme power and lovely sound was so versatile. He could sing Verdi like Verdi always wished his wonderful music to be sung and he could sing American songs with the patriotic passion they should convey. This collection is magnificent.
One of the Richest High Baritones of the Century..........2001-09-08
Leonard Warren possessed an unusual voice; a lyric baritone with the fullness of a powerful basso cantante. His high notes traveled into the upper baritone stratosphere, with a beauty matched to my ears only by Riccardo Stracciari... and he sang them with an ease most tenors can only envy. (And I love the tenor voice, don't make any mistake about that!) Listening to this two CD set brought one thing forth to my mind- Leonard Warren flat out enjoyed singing and he enjoyed spreading that fabulous feeling far and wide.
Listen to his renditions of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, the four sea shanties gracing this disc, and America the Beautiful. How many singers have ever rendered these old songs with such enthusiasm and beauty? To my ears, few can compare. A Little Bit of Heaven is a charming little piece of nostalgia for old Ireland, with perfectly placed high notes that provide a baritone counterpoint to the marvelous Scottish and Irish tenors that have graced our ears throughout this century. The sound on most of the songs is clear, showing off Warren's voice to his and the listeners' advantage.
Now we come to the opera arias and there's a rich assortment on display here. The Gounod Faust aria is from a rare Russian concert recording and is gorgeous, though it's accompanied by a piano. (Nothing against pianos, but I wanted the full orchestra. On other selections in the songs CD, the piano works superbly. Just a matter of personal taste.) The classic Scintille Diamant from Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman shows off his upper range, as he hits the high G-sharps with authority and ease. One of my favorites is the great aria from Verdi's MacBeth, in which Warren gets it all together. MacBeth's humanity is rarely on display in this version of the drama, but here it is in spades, along with his arrogance, fear, and anger at being attacked. "Birnam Wood on the march indeed!" The ease and fullness of the high notes, which are all in service to one of Warren's greatest characterizations, are a wonder.
Don't get the idea that only his high notes sounded good, or that Warren was a bellowing beast. He floated a pillowy pianissimo that has to be heard to be believed. The only other baritone voice that compares in this respect, of those whom I have heard, is Cornell MacNeil. I regret that there seems to be no great baritone duets these two great singers could have engaged in, like Verdi provided for bassos in Don Carlos. Does anyone out there remember either of the two great performances by Ghiaurov and Talvela of the King Philip/Grand Inquisitor duets under either Stein or Solti?
Back to Leonard Warren...
In terms of sound on the opera selections, the later, the better, though most of the pieces sound fine. I must agree a bit with an earlier reviewer in the case of Il Balen, from Verdi's Il Trovatore. The sound is fuzzy, bloated, and unclear, at least on my machine... but most all the others sound fine on the same machine. What happened? I had several versions of this great aria on LP, and I do remember one of them being well below the sonic standard of any of the others. The version on the old Cellini conducted complete recording with Bjoerling and Milanov sounded fine, as did the version he recorded with Leontyne Price and Richard Tucker. Why have this one, which does a disservice to the singer and the CD as a whole? And where is his incredible Per me ora fatale from the same opera? Even hearing a badly recorded version of Leonard Warren performing this aria would be a thrill. His singing of Il Balen is excellent- it just sounds foggy. Except for that, I would recommend this set to anyone interested in Warren's singing who might not have many of these recordings on CD. If you have virtually all of them, why bother with this set... unless there's a song you just cannot live without?
The Otello excerpts are exceptional, and there's the treats of his Nemico della patria (Andrea Chenier by Giordano) and Di Provenza (La Traviata) which are my favorite versions of these arias.
To those who might love the singing of Sherrill Milnes and Thomas Hampson, Leonard Warren should be heard and savored for what he was: an American original we can all be proud of.
