Yes, Teddy Thompson's parents are renowned folkies Richard and Linda Thompson. And, sure, he's spent the past few years touring the world with his good friend Rufus Wainwright, who recently wrote a song about their inimitable relationship called "Nobody's off the Hook." But it's Thompson's rich, twangy voice that deserves the spotlight. After turning out two thoroughly underappreciated albums of original material--it would be pushing it to even call them cult favorites--the lovelorn singer-songwriter takes on a dozen classic country tunes on Up Front and Down Low. It's a good fit, the bitter sentiments the inform his own work paired with the sterling melodies of Ernest Tubb's "Walking the Floor Over You" and Elvis Presley's "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone." Thompson gives each of the tunes a masterful makeover, polishing them up with an all-star cast of players that includes Iris DeMent, Tift Merritt, and Marc Ribot. Wainwright offers string his own "Down Low" into the mix without breaking the mood. One usually doesn't think of men as being classic torch singers, but with UP FRONT AND DOWN LOW, New York-based young Brit singer/songwritier Teddy Thompson makes a stunning claim to that style of heart-achey pop music. Backed with tasteful arrangements on classic country tunes and his one original, Thompson unleashes his clear, plaintive and often soaring tenor to astonishing effect - particularly on "Walking the Floor Over You", "My Heart Echoes", "She Thinks I Still Care", Dolly Partron's "My Blue Tears" and his own "Down Low". Thompson delivers terrific phrasing on all tracks, especially putting over the wonderfully sarcastic edge of "You Finally Said Something Good (When You Said Goodbye)", which opens with a jaunty string quartet cakewalk. That number and the witty "Let's Think About Living" are the most upbeat among the album's 12 listed and one hidden track, a sweet and mournful "Don't Ask Me to Be Friends". Listeners who enjoyed Thompson's contributions to the BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN soundtrack will be delighted to find that UP FRONT AND DOWN LOW continues his forary into classic country & western music and delivers one of 2007's best sung albums in the process. Fresh and innovative.......2007-07-22
This is the best (new) album I've heard in years. The arrangements are
great. It sure beats 99% of what's being released as country music-
even though this CD is in the "pop" section at the stores.
Teddy Thompson is my kind of singer-not trying to sound like anybody
else (even though there is a little, but less twangy, Dwight Yoakam
in a couple of the tracks). I hope he does some more of the older
country classics with a couple of his own songs thrown in.
I could only rate this album 5 stars, but would have rated it higher.

to do country covers. Sure, with his pedigree he gets the finest musicians and broods over his cult following a la Rufus Wainwright, but this wreaks of contractual agreement.
Lean close, Teddy...write your own songs. No you aren't a great songwriter yet and yes, you have issues with Richard and Linda as your parents, but you get no sympathy from this listener.
This album could have been done better by about 1200 country artists just in Tennessee alone.
Maybe you should join Van Morrison on a country tribute tour.

I guess this is technically a country album, but he brings a very folk/alt vibe to these songs. The result is just beautiful. Really, from start to finish. The emotion carried in his voice is so very moving. Just so soulful and touching.
If country isn't your "thing" I still say there is a place in any alt-rock collection for this CD. Perfect for a night of missing that certain someone. Perfect for a night of drowning your sorrows. Perfect for that long trip you didn't want to make in the first place. Ah, it's just perfect.

Richard and Linda Thompson. I first heard of Teddy Thompson on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack and have purchased all of his CD's. This one is no disappointment. As a country music fan, I love this CD so far, after just 2 listens. Teddy hits all the right notes, metaphorically speaking, and uses just the right amount of great backup vocals and musicians. I am taking a road trip this weekend and can't wait to crank up the speakers and listen to this CD several times in about 6 hours.

Family Force 5 -- A Force to be Reckoned with..........2007-06-26
Family Force 5 delivers an onslaught from the first second to the very end. It's a wall of sound from start to finish that is some of the most fun you're likely to ever hear (unless they ever release an equally good sophomore album, etc).
This is the perfect crank-it-up, piss off your neighbors, head-banging kind of music. And it's great to scream along to.
What I've Been Looking For!.......2007-05-11
This cd is exactly what I have been looking for. Nice crunchy guitars, upbeat, and clean vocals. I just picked it up today, and I couldn't help but put my window down and turn the stereo up. I'm pushing 40, and this cd made me feel like I was in high school again. Great, great fun disc.

Family Force 5 is one of the best bands out there! their music is super catchy and you'll wanna sing it all day long... I DO! Before I had heard FF5 I didnt really like the loud upbeat music, but these guys were just so good I couldnt help but wanna hear them again and again! so I bought the CD. Trust me if you are fun, crazy, and loud you will LOVE this CD!!!
So I thought the 3 new tracks deserved a try..........2007-03-29
Before Diamond Edition came out, I had purchased their previous album containing all of the tracks off of Diamond Edition with the exception of 3. I purchased this new one mostly because I had found their music so catchy, and perhaps 3 new tracks would give me something new by them to listen to. What first was odd to me is the album art. Amazon displays a large black album art with a sparkly Family Force 5 logo. I opened up my package to find that mine did as well, but it's just wrapping that packages the CD case and you have to actually take that off. So all of a sudden I am introduced to a new album art: a red background, and a skull and crossbones (the crossbones being keyboards of some sort). I was surprised that Amazon wouldn't display the actual album art. Anxious to hear the 3 new tracks, I immediately popped the CD into my player. I have a quick review of each of the 3 tracks:
I Love You to Death - Cool guitaring, lyrics are a bit repetitive and cheesy, but the beat is really catchy. I'd give this one a 4/5.
Face Down - This is the song that I can't seem to get into. It doesn't sound much like Family Force 5 at all. I have listened to it many times to see if it would grow on me. It mostly seems like a filler song. I'd give it a 2/5.
Never Let Me Go - This is probably my favorite of the 3. Very catchy vocals and effects. Guitaring sounds great. Chorus is fun. Definitely a cool beat. Overall, 5/5.
Hope this helps anyone who has purchased Business Up Front, Party in the Back in the past and basically wants to know if 3 new tracks is worth the cash. I'd say I'm satisfied overall. It's great to hear something new from them.

I don't know what you expect from a dreaded guy showing his bare foot on the cover, but that picture is meant to fool you. This is the most honest& best album I have played over the air in 2004. The more times you listen to this cd all the way through, the more you'll be convinced this man is put here just to help you see. Very rarely you'll find such an artist at his peak, and virtually unknown. Very proud to say my listeners request Michael Franti regularly. Every flower has a right to be bloomin :) Brilliant!

Front Line Assembly reclaimed its throne last year with the release of "Artificial Soldier" and a world tour. Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the band is prepping for a second assault. "Fallout" features three new tracks and nine remixes and has been deemed to cause exhaustion from excessive dancing, hearing loss from listening to it too loud, and vertigo from its mind-blowing musical sequences.

FLA has always included some good surprises on their singles, as well as their remix albums. Fallout is undeniably no exception, spanning over 10 tracks while featuring three brand new songs and several remixes for Artificial Soldier. Sadly however, Fallout is not without its flaws. While it does enter the record arena with copious offerings, some of the offerings end up sounding hollow and rushed. But what Fallout does have to offer that is worthwhile, quickly reassures the listener that FLA is still ready to hammer out an industrial masterpiece "in between" albums.
Armageddon could easily be said to the centerpiece of Fallout, and perhaps the main reason to justify buying the release. The sound of the song could be summed up as "very aggressive German Electro." The sound resembles that of a band such as E-Craft, but with FLA's own take on the genre. The songs lyrics are nothing special, since they consist of Bill Leeb's usual attempt at creating a rhyme scheme (it is interesting though that he threw in some of his native German language lyrics.) The sound on the song is what really makes it worth a listen. Armageddon features a full on grinding guitar assault mixed with some of the most aggressive synth work that Leeb has done in ages. It also has Leeb using much harsher vocal distortion than he has used in the past few years. All of the aforementioned culminates in one of the most delightful surprises that FLA has yet to produce since the song Anti (on the Maniacal single)!
While Armageddon is reason enough to buy the album, the other two new tracks, Electric Dreams and Unconscious do well on their own. Electric Dreams sounds like a song that could have belonged on either Implode or Epitaph, but its usage of electronics makes it more easily fitting for the Artificial Soldier era. Unconscious is also decent in its own right, but it's not as great of an instrumental/electronic landscape as Anti or Disseminate. Still, it captures a nice face paced EBM/cybernetic feel that FLA doesn't seem to really explore very often in this day and age.
As for the remixes on Fallout, listeners will most likely find half of them to be good while the other half will sound, as previously mentioned, rushed and hollow sounding. The most well thought out and produced remixes would be DJ(?) Acucrack's remix of Buried Alive, J. Inkel's remix of Social Enemy, Greg Reely's remix of Lowlife and FLA's own remix of Unleashed. Greg Reely especially does the listener a major service by taking Lowlife one-step further and "improves it" by adding onto Bill Leeb's vocal distortion and polishing up various parts of the track to give it and even more slick and powerful electronic sound. On the other hand, DJ(?) Acucrack's remix of Buried Alive is a welcome attempt at building on the song's drum and bass feel. Unfortunately, the song gets lost at certain parts due to losing momentum and seemingly dabbling around in experimentation. Still, the song is a valiant attempt at taking FLA and bringing them one step closer to the D&B genre.
Despite having a slew of unimpressive remixes, Fallout manages to come out ahead of the rest of many releases this year by offering up both some incredible takes on previous FLA tracks and some great new material. It is slightly disappointing due to the boring remixes but it is still very worth the price of admission for the new tracks, and if only one, definitely Armageddon.

the remixes are nice, but the unreleased tracks are what really pay for the cd. the first, electric dreams, is sort of a simple/implode sounding song. it's not as layered as a lot of the stuff on artificial soldier, but the verse synth works well enough on it's own. and +1 for the robot voice. secondly, armageddon, is almost a millennium/hard wired era song. live drums and live guitar. really in your face. lastly, unconscious, is an instrumental that kind of sounds like implode synth meets epitaph drum programming.

I'm not very in the know about this type of music, as my first love is Metal and Hard rock. But I enjoy other types of music as well such as electronica and dance music. This Cd has some good music but I was really looking for a heavier driving rhythym than I find here. Still, it's worth a listen.
Re-Wind was Good...This is Magnificent........2007-05-10
Artificial Soldier wasn't a groundbreaking FLA record, but it is a well-rounded output. The bonus tracks on Fallout belong on that record. The mixing quality here is remarkable and could have only been hand picked by Bleebo. It is nice to see the guys won't give up anytime soon.

Best remix collection I've heard.......2007-05-18
Simply put, this collection of remixes, and a few artfully selected covers, is the highest quality collection of its kind I've heard.
Most remix collections seem to have a few good tracks among a bunch of tracks that aren't worth listening to more than once. This two-disc set is the exception to that rule; nearly every song included is tasty aural bliss.
I would have expected Collide's layered organic and electronic sound to be hard to do justice while taking in new directions for remixing, but each of these artists have succeeded, often spectacularly so. Only one track is difficult for me to enjoy: Somewhere/Orchestral Mix; I find it an interesting attempt but it's not for me. The rest range from very enjoyable to music I might never want to take out of my CD player.
Get this album for The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (see also the DVD Like the Hunted), and enjoy the rest of the sweet and sultry gems from Slither Thing/Amish Rake Fight Mix to the delightfully sad Crushed/Out of Control Mix, plus plenty more.
To Collide fans, even those skeptical of remixes, this is a must-own. To those not yet a fan of Collide, you might start with Some Kind of Strange or Chasing the Ghost and then pick this up - though I'm not sure it matters, and this would still make a great listen without any prior knowledge of Collide.
Amazingly Brilliant!!! .......2007-04-12
Collide must be one of the greatest bands ever to hit the gothic scene. The combination of Karin and Statik are explosive; indeed, Vortex is definitely their masterpiece of Remixes done right! As well as new songs that will demand your attention, highly note worthy!! Some of the best out there!
Listen to the samples on this site just so you can say "Yeah, I'm a smart consumer." If you like any combination of Collide, you're gonna end up buying Vortex, it is most certainly a treat for the ears and the imagination.
Get lost in the Vortex.......2006-10-10
I really liked this album, while some of the songs are remixed more than once they're still able to keep a semblance of uniqueness. Then there are the little gems added to the mix "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum" and "Feed Me to the Lions" are really fun songs that quickly moved their way into my top 10 lists.
These two disks hold a variety of moods from the frantic to the meditative, there is a remix for almost all occasions and then some. If you're just starting out with your Collide obsession this is a great album to showcase their diversity and complexity; and if you're deep into your Collide wall to wall shrine then this album is hard to beat and will surely earn a coveted spot on your shrine to Collide.

You will all think I'm crazy, but I was looking for new music one day at work, came across Collide because it was "similar" to other music I like, and bought it without even hearing it! I wasn't somewhere that I could listen to the samples, so I trusted other user reviews, and couldn't be more pleased. This CD has become a staple in my collection, and frankly, hasn't left my CD changer yet! My boyfriend even added it to his iPod. My personal favorite is "The Lunatics...", don't ask me why. I always play it on my way to the gym...and sometimes before work...perhaps it's something Freudian. :)
I absolutely adore Collide, and plan to try out their other CDs. It's amazing the feeling the music gives you. It's very ethereal, and makes you feel like you're somewhere else. Definitely a great buy, even if you're not into this type of music.
Others I would recommend in this genre are Claire Voyant (Time and the Maiden), Delerium (Karma), Hungry Lucy (To Kill a King), and Lamb (any of them, especially Lamb and Fear of Fours).
remixed to perfection.......2006-07-06
before picking up this two-disc package, i was not familiar with the works of Collide. i bought this item on a whim, and am very glad i did. the variety of style approach is refreshing, you really don't hear the same song twice, though there are a few mixes of a few songs. these are good cds to put in on a trip or chill at the house, and i've had the album for a few weeks now and am not tired of it. enjoy the haunting effects of a great band rearranged by great artistic minds.

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This selection of largely acoustic, predominately solo performances finds Richard Thompson trading the guitar pyrotechnics of his electric albums for greater intimacy, vocal subtlety, and emphasis on his storytelling lyrics. Though this is Thompson's first acoustic release of all-original material, "Row, Boys, Row" and "The Boys of Mutton Street" could pass as traditional British folk balladry, while the droll humor and stately musical grace of "Miss Patsy" recall some of Thompson's early work with Fairport Convention. The songwriting is as ambitious as the arrangements are minimal, from the bitter misanthropy of the character study in "A Solitary Life" to the bittersweet yearning of "Cressida" to the hypnotic insistence of "My Soul, My Soul." In "Let It Blow," Thompson applies his sharp wit to the tale of a serial husband with a penchant for quickie marriages, as the weddings signal the end of the romance. Front Parlour Ballads is almost entirely acoustic, with all instruments but percussion played by Richard Thompson himself. Despite the basic approach, however, this is not a sparse album. His guitar playing is as complex as ever, and the songs stand comparison with any of his best. The opening track, "Let It Blow," is a funny account of a relationship conducted in the grubby glare of the tabloids, and "For Whose Sake?" and "Miss Patsy" are sterling illustrations of Thompson's ability to frame modern sentiments and stories within time-served folk idioms. "Boys of Mutton Street" starts with a riff which is surely intentionally an echo of Thompson's previously best-known acoustic song, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," and "Solitary Life" sounds like it might be Thompson's take on Radiohead's "Fitter Happier." There has been bizarrely little recognition of the possibility, but after the resounding classics Mock Tudor and The Old Kit Bag, Front Parlour Ballads suggests that Thompson may well be in the prime of his long and extraordinary career. --Andrew Mueller

I live with a Fairport/Richard junkie, and I've had 6 years luxurious exposure to this music now. I love it, but I'm no expert. That said... Miss Patsy and a couple other elements of this album bring Steve Tilston to mind-- not just the spare guitar sound, but the bluesiness. When We Were Boys At School is classic Richard, boiling a bit of life down to the really sad reduction; the depressing reality, expressed so beautifully. This album is growing more captivating with each play, and is already one of my favorites. Acoustic Richard is the best.
The essence of a hidden protest song.......2005-12-09
This is the first RT solo album I've heard. A friend had been recommending him to me for a while. Probably because of his fine guitar playing and his tendency to arrange his lyrics to the note, i.e. break the rhythm and simply parallel a vocal line with the guitar.
This happens in "Row, Boys Row" (should have read the small print) But what makes this song so striking to me is it's veiled message of protest. This falls in line right where I am striving for, simple acoustic songs protesting the Iraq War and the lies and perpetrations of the current administration. But to disguise the message in the guise of a sailor's song is a sign of songwriting genius. In the choruses alone, he speaks of the plight of the homeless and refugees of Katrina, the soldiers in Iraq who are sitting ducks "in a shark-filled sea" the obiesance of the minions forced to fall in line with W. Alas, the ship must push on for fear of the captain's lash.
Richard Thompson's "Pink Moon?".......2005-10-24
Listening to this CD (something I, sadly, don't foresee myself doing much in the future), I was struck by its resemblance to Nick Drake's brilliant "Pink Moon." But the resemblance proved to be superficial. When Joe Boyd received the tapes of PM, he remarked that he thought they were just demos, but soon realized he was listening to the finished product.
No such luck here. This CD seems incomplete. While the musicianship is first-rate as always, the songs themselves are unfinished, and the vocal work is downright sloppy in spots. The melodies, such as they are, are too high-pitched for Richard to reach, and reach he does, almost always unsuccessfully.
The CD almost sounds like a recording made simply to fulfill contractual obligations. I have seen Richard in concert every time he has come to town in the last fifteen years. If his current tour will be including a lot of songs from this collection, I may have to pass up the opportunity this time and wait until only a few of these are sprinkled into future concerts.
RT Scores Again.......2005-10-07
By my count, this is Richard Thompson's twentieth studio release as a solo artist (or duo with former wife Linda), and like all of his other albums it is uniformly excellent. There is certainly a laid back feel to this release, but the 13 tracks contain Thompson's usual flair for poignant lyrics and impressive if understated guitar playing.
The album begins with the rollicking "Let It Blow." [Favorite line: "A life of volcanic activity/Left him nothing to spout but hot air."] Other uptempo numbers include "The Boys of Mutton Street," which recalls "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" with its folky acoustic fingerpicking; and the melanchalia of "A Solitary Life." [Favorite line: "You work on your pallor, complexion like paste/Like the grey defeat on an inmate's face."] Thompson also adds some mandolin flourishes to the jaunty "Miss Patsy."
The rest of the album falls loosely under the heading of brooding ballads with tracks like the haunting "My Soul, My Soul" and the remorseful "For Whose Sake?"
All told, this is a thoroughly satisfying album from arguably the greatest singer-songwriter-guitarist of our time. Why Richard Thompson has spent the better part of forty years without mainstream success simply shows the ignorance of the music-buying public. For those of us who enjoy finely crafted music, let's be grateful that he continues to follow his muse. [Running Time - 46:55] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
One of Thompson's very best.......2005-10-03
First of all, I'd like to say that the reviewer who compared the tracks on this CD to "outtakes from the Nude disc of You? Me? Us?" spoke quite disingenuously. The only comparison that can truly be made is that the tracks on both discs are acoustic; there, the comparisons part company. You? Me? Us? was produced by Mitchell Froom, who had a tendency to overproduce RT's music, which benefits from the stripped-down treatment Thompson himself gives it here. Froom would have been out of his element with Front Parlour Ballads.
Are these the absolute best of RT's career, these songs? That's for the listener to judge; personally, after just a few listens, I quite like them. "Let it Blow" is the wickedly funny tale of a serial husband who blows his own cover ("As she lay on the sand/He said "Isn't it grand?/I bring all of my wives to this spot!"), "Should I Betray?" has the protagonist pondering whether to tell a philandering friend's wife about his friend's reprehensible behaviour, "The Boys of Mutton Street" is about a young street gang of a bygone era (before drugs and guns), and "Miss Patsy" could easily pass for a traditional Appalachian folk song. Another reviewer speaks of the focus being on RT's songs, not his always-excellent playing, but you certainly can't miss his guitar work; technically brilliant without being flashy, melodic and even emotional without being overwrought, Thompson is my candidate for the best guitarist on the planet.
And here, Thompson also proves himself an able producer. There's not a wasted note or outright throwaway track on this CD; indeed, only bassist extraordinaire Danny Thompson (no relation) is truly conspicuous in his absence. Fortunately, he'll be with RT on RT's U.S. tour this fall; I myself have plans to see them in Albany, NY, on 21 Oct. Don't miss this album, or that tour.

Billy Joel - A Nice Late 80's Return To Form.......2007-06-12
"Storm Front" was an album that Joel recorded after he had the experience of being one of the first western rock stars to play in the Soviet Union the year before. The experience is reflected in some of the songs here especially the excellent "Leningrad". The album was produced by Foreigner main man Mick Jones and I have always thought this was one of Joel's stronger efforts and a return to form after several mediocre albums in the mid to late 80's. The album had two monster hits "We Didn't Start The Fire" and "I Go To Extremes" both of which are good songs. The third single "Downeaster Alexa" did not make as big of a splash, but I think it is one of the best songs he has done in it's description of career Fishermen in the Atlantic. Other highlights include the title track "Storm Front" and the previously mentioned "Leningrad". On the more average side Joel includes several love songs to his then wife model Christy Brinkley including "That's Not Her Style", "Shameless", and "When In Rome" none of which are really memorable. The album closes with a mournful tale of lost love called "And So It Goes" which is the type of song that Joel always does well. Overall I think the highs far outweigh the lows on this disc, and it is well worth a listen.
Big improvement over the original.......2007-01-10
I purchased this CD when the Storm Front tour took place in the 1980's. This version has been greatly improved over the original one. I lost my old copy and bought this as a replacement. I'm so glad I did!
Too strained and "pop" for the Virtuoso.......2006-06-15
Looking back on this album, it really lacks any of the elements that make the "classics" by Billy Joel truly special.
Blow by blow:
"That's Not Her Style" - fun rock song. That's all.
"We Didn't...Fire" - Just listen to the music and ignore the words - this is just a terrible song.
"Downeaster.." - okay song
"... Extremes" - Pop/rock-ish; good piano solo.
"Shameless" - he should be for writing this one.
"Storm Front" - decent, but feels like he's forcing it.
"Leningrad" - interesting lyrics
"State of Grace" - nothing special
"When in Rome" - forgettable
"And So It Goes" - now this is a special song. If you really like the B. Joel songs that dig deep and you feel every note and lyric, this is the one. You're better off downloading this one song than buying the whole album.
Get yourself the "Songs in the Attic" album and call it a day.

I can't help it. I like this cd. Songs like 'I Go To Extremes', 'We Didn't Start The Fire', and 'Shameless' all bring back great memories of the closeout of one the greatest decades ever.
Joel has never been one to write serious social song as much as be a reporter of what's going on in society. So a song like 'We Didn't Start The Fire' makes no sense at all but the lyrics conjure up pictures of specific events that do mean a lot to listeners like myself. On a song like 'Downeaster Alexa' he does a very good job of painting a picture of a fishing boat captain. 'That's not Her Style' is just a straight ahead rocking type of song. It's more fun than anything else. But the song that is pure Billy Joel is 'I Go To Extremes'. He wrote this for his drummer but it has all the trademark Joel badboy wannabe lyrics we've seen and loved since 'Only The Good Die Young'.
This cd isn't going to change your life but it has some great tunes.
Truly Essential Billy Joel.......2005-09-01
Billy Joel's tenth studio album, "The Bridge" featured no very big hits and highlighted a more mellow style of songwriting than his normal, catchy, rock-beat songs of previous albums. People debated whether he was growing old, whether he still had what it takes to make a successful rock song. Some even accepted that, sure, a little bit of his flair is missing and his music is more "adult contemporary", but they'll take it.
And then came "Storm Front". Within the first fifteen or so seconds of the first song on the album, "That's Not Her Style", the world knew Joel was back to his old and great form.
Every song showed flavors of classic Joel: "That's Not Her Style" contained an infectious, catchy refrain with a dastardly beat reminiscent of "Half A Mile Away" on "52nd Street". "We Didn't Start The Fire", though not popular among critics and even fans, showed that Joel still knew exactly what pop industry needed, and the song bolted to #1 on the Billboard Charts. "Downeaster Alexa" displayed Joel's love of storytelling through song, as previously seen in "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" and "Zanzibar". "I Go To Extremes" reminded us that Joel was and is the Hendrix of the piano. "Shameless" reassured us that, even after all those years, Billy could still make a meaningful, catchy, excellent love song. The list goes on and on. Every song reminds us, somehow, of Billy's roots in the pop industry.
There is no filler on this album. Everybody likes some songs, dislikes others. But nothing is low quality or uninteresting. So whether you buy this album for "We Didn't Start The Fire" or just because you're interested in the kind of music Billy can make, just be sure to buy it.
BOTTOM LINE: "I Go To Extremes"? "Shameless"? "And So It Goes"? Monumental pop hit "We Didn't Start The Fire"? How could this not be essential? Prepare yourself for some of the best pop-rock of all time.

Arriving out of Atlanta like high school sophomores who stole mom's car to hit spring break in Daytona Beach, the 3 brothers and 2 others of Family Force 5 deliver their debut, Business Up Front/Party In The Back. Without a doubt the focus here is on the "party", as most of the record is devoted to getting down, chasing girls ("Drama Queen" sounds like it was written by a 14 year old who just got dumped), and driving around with the radio blasting. Not that there's anything wrong with these things, but the band comes off more like Limp Bizkit's smart-ass little brother than a bunch of kids on a tear.
No one would accuse FF5 of over-thinking their music and lyrics--when your album title is a.k.a. a mullet, intellectualism probably isn't your highest priority. Overall, the album seems genetically engineered to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, piled high with 80's synths, rap/rock riffs and shout-along refrains, and name-checking everything from break dancing to Speak & Spells. In the end, trying this hard causes the FF5 to wear out their welcome. It's only when the band drops the catchy chorus on "Kountry Gentleman" or "Love Addict", you may just find yourself speeding down the highway, bobbing your head a little despite your better judgement. --Ben Heege

I love this CD! One of the most fun discs I have ever heard. Great to work out to, great to drive to, great for a pick-me-up. I only gave it a 4 because it never goes very deep, though there are a few songs that have a somewhat deeper meaning if you read into them. I hope they make more CD's; they certainly have talent.

I first heard of FF5 while working in a Christian book/music store when I heard "Luv Addict" playing over the sound system. That song just stuck with me and I was hooked, so I bought the CD. WOW!!!!!!! Repeat after me: "I will buy this CD, I will buy this CD!" If you do not buy this CD, you are really missing out. Even as a 36-year old mother of 3, I absolutely love this music. It is so fresh and just good plain fun. And if you are looking for some great music to work out to...look no further! I am a runner and listening to this music has helped me increase my time because it really gets the adrenaline pumping!! Also, I love the messages in "Luv Addict" and "Replace Me". Last night I found myself worshipping God so deeply and dancing so energetically while listening to these songs that today I have the worst sore neck!! Consider yourself warned...you will not be able to sit still while listening to FF5. Inevitably, you will become a headbanger!! I love this band and I love the fact that they are Christians, and also that their music will cross over to anyone who just plain loves great music. Trust me, this CD will appeal to all types of music fans and is an absolute must-buy!!

If you are looking for a cd to get you outta your chair and moving, this is it. You can't help but blast every song and dance in your seat while you are driving, which tends to cause strange looks from other motorists! If they owned this cd, they would be doing the same thing! FF5 is a great band out of ATL with a Christian background. I first heard them on Sirius channel 67 (Revolution) and had to have the cd. It was worth every penny and I never have to worry about what kind of message the kids are getting from the music.

This is a CD that everyone in my house loves. I am a 42 year old man who grew up on on AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, etc. My wife loves U2, Third Day, Lifehouse, etc, my 15 year old daughter loves Coldplay, Switchfoot, etc, my younger boys love DCTalk and TobyMac.... but WE ALL LOVE THIS CD!!! It is fun, it is funny, and the music kicks butt. Really. Buy it, you will like it and these guys deserve our support.
Can't help but Dance!.......2006-11-29
This group is one of the most unique, awesome, different bands I've ever heard! If you're tired of the same old depressing music get this CD and I promise you won't be able to stop yourself from dancing!!! And just when I thought they couldn't get any better I find out they're a Christian Band!!! Warning: If listening to this CD in the car exspect getting some wierd looks from people as you rock out driving past! But don't let that stop you! ROCK OUT!!!

I love Sousa marches but this recording while comprehensive and cheep lacks much to be desired in the musical rendension. It lacks the spark and musicality of Sousa.
Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.
Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01
I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.
How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07
Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!
