"...More punk polemics, rhythmic sound collages and lo-fi gizmo music..." - Rating: B
Album Description
Le Tigre is Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill), Johanna, and video artist Sadie Benning. As an electronic act, the trio celebrates the radical aspirations of 90's DIY, feminist, punk art rather than playing into the "women in rock" stereotypes of feminist rage. This re-issue also includes a video collage of live Le Tigre performance footage cut to the song, "Yr Critique".

Professional force-to-be-reckoned-with (and Bikini Kill frontwoman) Kathleen Hanna takes on George Clinton's "free your ass and your mind will follow" mantra with her current project Le Tigre. Following their ace eponymous debut debut, the pop-punk trio of Hanna, Johanna Fateman, and Sadie Benning return with "From the Desk of Mr. Lady," a snappy suckerpunch of subversion. Using simple drum machines, electric guitar power chords, and Hanna's rebel yell, they create hard and shiny dancecore with a bad attitude. On this short and sweet EP, "Bang! Bang!" is the most poignant track, chronicling the shooting of unarmed African immigrant Amadou Diallo in New York. It ends with a bone-chilling drum sequence that represents the 41 shots fired by NYPD officers, who were ultimately acquitted. Le Tigre achieve the unusual by seamlessly uniting fun music with revolutionary ideas: this EP is unabashedly political, angry, and addictive. It rocks. --Lizz Mendez Berry
Album Description
With this CD, Le Tigre picks up where they left off- buzzing guitars, chaotic gang vocals, low resolution samples and programmed beats reference their punk history and point the way to a feminist future without genre loyalties. While still taking full advantage of the rough edges, Le Tigre's new songs are more structurally ambitious if not slicker. Political rage and activist disillusionment remain explicit and/or buried lyrical themes, but danceable beats and experimentation keep it weirdly unjaded. Mr. Lady Records.

WHOA! i am a big le tigre fan...but this album is awesome!.......2004-04-24
le tigre in general are quite an electro-clash band, but more like a punked electroclash band...(electro clash song by them: Shred A)
EP is amazing. i really liked "get off the internet"
one difference that i noticed immediately, is that this cd is more louder than the others...it is "harder" and they scream a lot in this one.
may i also say that the art work on the front of the albums is pretty cool too?
Le Tigre's Beat is Noise!.......2001-08-12
So ok there's Beck. Critics can't get enough of Beck (and I'm not dissing, I can't get enough either). They fawn all over his musical collage as he pulls influences from everyone like Can to Public Enemy. Same with Beastie Boys. But with a female group they are almost written off as a novelty and not given the proper attention they deserve. It's about the message and not the music, and maybe with a straight punk rock group that is true, but sometimes the music is rad too. Le Tigre knows the beat.
Le Tigre's most recent EP "From the Desk of Mr. Lady", like their first record, draws on all types of music to activate their political messages. Hip hop gets comfortable with new wave while dance and pop attack from the corners coached on by punk rock. It's really kinda large. When you hear it you can totally hear like a hip hop beat or dance beat with punk rock vocals over a new wave/ poppy rhythm.
And then yes there is the message. On top of really dope music there is a dope message of unity, activism, and the destruction of social ills. You're dancing and thinking and it doesn't get better than that.
The only complaint is that it is an EP and not a full length, but I still rock the album strong (half a year and counting) and can't wait for the next joint to pop.
LE TIGRE ON THE PROWL.......2001-07-18
I am in amour with this band and believe Kathleen Hannah to be one of the most innovative artists around. Le Tigre is an amazing fusion of punk, 80's and old skool beats. A sense of advocacy is felt in their songs as well. One song on the new album addresses the Amiallo case (spelled right?) where in NY a guy was shot over 20 times by the cops. Needed? I think not. This album is at times powerful , the remixes are good but as a whole just not as strong as their last album. I recommend owning it just as I will recommend owning anything Kathleen Hannah has worked on i.e. Bikini Kill.
raw. fun. good........2001-06-29
I was really pleased by this release. I had a hard time getting into the first Le Tigre and the Julie Ruin album. They were too low-quality sounding. I'm into lo-fi and four tracks, but, too me, those albums sounded like they were recorded with an old hand held tape recorder. From The Desk of Mr. Lady is fun, angry, and smart. It's accesible without being fluffy, and it stays away from the one-note, three chord, every song sounds the same tune that a lot of "tough" girl bands use.
Why is everybody against this album!!.......2001-06-12
Post Bikini, Kathleen Hanna has been faulted for not sounding like BK, and while I can certainly emphathize with those people who want their favirote artist to sound a certain way, I also understand the artist's need for independence.
For independent artists, independence is not a trend or an option, but a principled stand. In fact, given the reality that this is true "alternative music" (as opposed to the MTV manufactured image) it is completely within LT's right to conceptualize an album how they ultimatley see fit.
Although the album is radically different from Le Tigre's first effort, I think of this as a challenge to fans, rather than a negative mark. Committed fans will recognize the depths provided by musical experimentation enhances the listening pleasure and makes for a more diverse CD.
Because feminism is still constructed as a movement for privlleged white women, it is important that the commentary on Diallo was included in this reccord. The interconnected nature of sexism and racisim require a multifacted response.
People who cannot open their minds to different perspectives on feminist/grrrl rock are just as counterproductive as the the chauvinist pig who leers at and molests girls in the mosh pit. Both individuals will only listen to their fellow being provided they meet a narrowly constructed interpretation of how they should or should not act.
I can't wait for the third album

Another Great Selection From Le Tigre.......2007-07-15
If you are a fan of Le Tigre, you'll this latest edition of their off-beat style of music. I originaly fell in love with the band while watching the movie "Better Luck Tomorrow." Their song "Let's Run" is what originally drew me to the band. A nice alternative to most of the drab music on the radio.
Great group, but more experimental offering.......2007-04-07
I've really gotten into Le Tigre and gotten pretty comfortable with the enormous range in styles from the dance-pop infectious TKO to the electronica-influenced Dyke March 2001 and softer but smart Well, Well, Well. From the Desk of Mr. Lady seems to push the boundaries, and is much more raw than most of their other works. It's worth getting to complete your collection, but it would probably be a lot harder to love this EP if you're only familiar with a few of Le Tigre's more popular songs. I still give them a lot of credit for creating some unique sounds and channeling some anger into an edgier compilation. "Hardcore" comes to mind in describing this one.
