There are no real jolts on this debut full-length by Jörg Burger a.k.a. The Modernist; Explosion is all steady pulse and flow. A limited timbral palette contributes to the disc's only slightly varying vibe. House inflects a number of the tracks, and trace elements of dub and R&B can be found. "Channel 28" subtly stands out for a couple of reasons: its sensuous swing and its atmospheric, beatfree intro and outro. Vocal chatter and guitar parts make an appearance on "Manson Soup," which nevertheless fits right into the album's general tone of low-key restraint. Despite all the soothing, hypnotic grooves, the disc does have a wound-up quality. Explosion, like so much minimal techno, throbs with self-contained tension. It's the sound of music that never quite provides a sense of release. Fred Cisterna

Sports Explosion.......2005-12-13

Sports Explosion has a driving high energy beat songs include; Come Baby Come; Get Ready for This; I Like to Move It; Mony Mony; Dance to the Music, The Twilight Zone, The Power, Na Na Hey Hey, and More... DJ's Choice does a fine job mixing Sports Explosion and it sounds great with a sub and fine for sports of all kinds including dance.

Not really an explosion.......2005-06-11

I like my sports. Everyday I look at the box scores, check my fantasy sports teams, read Bill Simmons' column on ESPN, use my football phone(free with my SI subscription) to call my friends and I even play catcher in slow pitch softball. With that background, if anyone is going to know a sports explosion, it's probably going to be me. I would probably rate this compilation of songs a sports campfire. The irony of putting a song by the village people on a sports cd almost worth giving this thing 5 stars.

How do I know all of these songs you ask? I attend many sporting events and also run the DJ booth at the softball complex when my team isn't playing. I tend to run a little hot up in the booth like Maverick and have even been called dangerous, but if you want to whip fans into a frenzy at a slow pitch church league softball game, I'm the best option you have. I go with some of these songs as you can't go wrong with "I like to move it" and "Twilight zone" even though the version of twilight zone on this thing is different than the golden earring version I play. I tend to start the crowd off slow with something like "Dancing with Tears in my eyes" by Ultravox in the first couple innings. I then throw on a mix of Hasselhoff, Musical Youth and Catherine Wheel in the middle innings. Nothing throws gets the crowd more pumped up than "Black Metallic", you should try it. Actually, you should read my reviews and emulate what I do to the best of your ability. Things will improve for you in many areas. The late innings are where I tend to rile things up with the standards like "Rock n' Roll part 2", "Footloose" and "Sister Christian". I usually close with "Goodbye" by Hootie and the Blowfish after the game finishes. The umps kind of get mad because the crowd chants for me to keep playing songs like I'm turning out one of my wedding receptions, but I always get on the loudspeaker and say that although I appreciate their worship, the next game needs to start. All in all, I make the ballpark fun for the whole family. This CD isn't a bad one for your collection, but don't just rely on it alone with no backup.

This is a great CD expect the YMCA song. The YMCA recording on this CD is really chesse sounding.

This is a great collection of dance music. Not only disco, though that's in the majority, but electro-funk and early house. Which is brilliant, because while it has all the disco classics, it shows that dance music didn't die with the end of disco, but instead went (slightly) underground, and continued to develop. But genres don't really matter on the dancefloor, as many a DJ--and this boxset--prove. This collection is guaranteed to jump start any party and keep it going through the night. Get it now!

I found the movie and the lyrics were well proportioned. The movie itself related to everyone who has ever been traveling, except for old foggies. I'm 45 and I still keep in touch with todays music. I listen to lyrics as well as beat.Your soundtract was right on the money for the movie .However, I do like certain types of sound.I liked about 6 out of 10 songs played.

the eels song "mr e's beautiful blues"on this soundtrack is the exact same song as the one entitled "mr e's beautiful blues" on daisies of the galaxy. i dont know what you are on. and by the way mr. e's beautiful blues on daisies of the galaxy is an extra track, not listed on the back of the CD. that might be part of your problem.
i give this soundtrack 5 stars solely on the merits of the eels contribution.

The strange paradox that makes the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion so hard to figure--and them all the better for it--is that despite a brazen desire to flaunt their complete lack of authenticity with an absurdly over-the-top howlin' bluesman schtick, their music really does kick tons more ass than just about anything else being passed off as contemporary blues these days. Orange augments the usual mess of raw blues and primal rock with Philly soul strings, theremin, and Beck's guest rapping. The added flavors don't make these songs better, but then, the band's raw material--bashed out on two guitars and drums--rocks quite well on its own, thank you. --Roni Sarig

I'm always behind...........2006-03-08

I will admit to being about 10 years behind the rest of "hip" America when it comes to music. The year that the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion released arguably it's finest album, Orange, I was knee deep into bands with happy names like Slayer and Napalm Death. Then, I entered the realm of the liberal university life. There, I met friends who owned CDs from bands like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Guided by Voices, 30-Ought Six, and so on; bands that intrigued, but scared me. Yes, even more than bands with names reminiscent of love and flowers like Slayer and Napalm Death.

So when it came to reinventing myself as a late 20-something (not by choice, mind you), I decided to rediscover some of the music I missed out on in the mid 1990's. Orange fit that bill. The reality is, I have enjoyed this album for the better part of the past 10 years, but it wasn't until recently that I dusted off my copy and put it back into the rotation. I won't say what I think Orange or JSBX is a mixture of, because I don't have the slightest idea. What I do know is that it is an ecclectic mix of something, that when combined, is infectious and numbing all at the same time. Someone mentioned "memorizing" Orange...I suppose that it would be possible, if you were an idiot savant. Orange sounds more like an amalgamation of guitar and drums played by drunk 13 year olds than something you would hum on your walk to class. But despite the lack of any cohesive sound (in my opinion), there is something appealing about JSBX, and Orange in particular, that I can't put my finger on. So I'm not even going to try.

What I will say is that as bluesy rock music goes, I imagine JSBX is at the top of the list. I don't have any clue who else is on that list...and don't really care. Orange is a unique album that stands alone in terms of any genre or label you place it in. It is truly a fun album for fans of rock, blues, hip hop...whatever.

"Good" Jimi Hendrix-ish blues rock - you might like it.......2006-01-11

"Orange" is not a great album, but it's not bad either - I think you'll simply be content with it. The singer isn't all that charismatic, but he at least sounds like he belongs in the band - I can imagine some people not liking him, though. The album is essentially Jimi-Hendrix-ish blues rock (not as much as The Mooney Suzuki, though). It's relatively well produced, and it at least sounds inspired and seemingly original. I think they definitely have their own unique sound (though it obviously has a lot of influences). Thankfully every song here is good, though none stand out as "great". The lyrics tend to be pretty impossible to make out, and even when you can they aren't that interesting anyway. They do have a pretty good sense of humor in some of the songs, however (see "Flavor" for an example). Overall it's merely a "good" record. Blues-rock fans should like it, but not greatly. Recommended.

The "blues" pose of JSBE doesn't always hit the spot for me ("Now I Got Worry," anyone?). But hey, what's in a name. Could a band possibly have more stage energy and swagger?

This one hits that spot, every single time. It's barely restrained sexuality (okay, it's not restrained at all) leaks out of your speakers as the band threatens to leap out of them.

I also enjoy the album they put out with Dub Narcotic Sound System.

Where the Hell was I?.......2005-07-28

I suppose that I am a new convert to the Blues Explosion. I kept hearing them on accuradio. Apperantly, they have been around for a long time. How would I describe the Blues Explosion? I would call it black explosion. It's more like the Beastie Boys with a crazy, howling front man. But however you want to describe it, it really is a well honed sound. You can tell the influences but that they are very well blended. Excellent rock n roll.

This is one of my desert island discs that I'll never grow tired off. Orange is the pinacle of JSBX.

Jon Spencer may just be a skinny white boy fron NYC, but he somehow captures (or emulates) that sort of old, dirty blues sound. And yet, explodes it! With... rock and roll.

From the opening instrumental, to the classic scream-along Flavor (see how many cities you can toss in as well, once Jon starts naming them off). This is a perfect hard-driving, rock record.

Despite providing the framework for lavishly hyped newcomers like the White Stripes and the Hives, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion remains a determinedly selective pleasure. Not that the New York trio hasn't tried to reach out to new audiences--it hitched up with Lollapalooza a few years ago and cast everyone from Beck to Gorillaz' frontman Dan the Automator to tweak its last album, 1998's Acme, into something listenable. On Plastic Fang the group pulls out the heaviest hitters yet, including producer Steve Jordan (Keith Richards, Blues Brothers), engineer Don Smith (U2, Tom Petty), and guests Bernie Worrell and Dr. John. Casting the Blues Explosion alongside grizzled veterans who understand the band's fascination with rock & roll's primal blues roots is a smart move. And while the songwriting is predictably unimposing stuff, the propulsive riffs and hammered-out grooves on tracks like "Down in the Beast" and "The Midnight Creep" present the Blues Explosion at its earsplitting best. A Hell of A Rockin' Roll Record.......2005-07-25

For the life of me I can't figure out how people can call this record "too mainsteam" or "too accessible"???? While there are some great melodies throughout Plastic Fang it's also raw rowdy and unpredictible as usual. The first four songs along with track 10 are outstanding and the rest are top notch heavy reverb JSBX rockabilly-like alternative blues rockers. Don't hesitate to pick this one up.

Multiple Listens Brings Rewards.......2004-04-19

This is an excellent rock album that falls perfectly into Jon Spencer's musical progression. Fans of early Blues Explosion may not find what they are looking for, but they probably did not enjoy the previous album or two either. (...) As each album from Jon and crew has been more focused musically than the one previous, this album is their most focused offering yet. Apparently, they took these songs on the road before recording the album. While some of the spontaneous feeling is lost, so much more is gained in quality.

Lyrically, this is the most advanced work Jon has done, to the best of my knowledge. This is a conceptual album hidden slightly among typical Blues Explosion puncuation. While the video for 'She Said', and album cover and title push the werewolf theme forward, a closer listen makes it apparent that the werewolf theme is only a motif, or metaphor in this case. The story is told in chronological order, across the majority of the twelve tracks. And the tale told is a story of infidelity, guilt, sin, and loss of love.

I have been listening to the Blues Explosion since 1996, and am not a so-called newcomer. I have all of their albums and enjoy them all. However, 'Plastic Fang' and 'Acme' are the only Blues Explosion albums that I will play all the way through without skipping any tracks. This album has suffered from poor reviews, mostly from those who only listened to the album once, and did so trying to hear 'Extra Width' and being disappointed that they did not do so. Make no mistake, this is the same Blues Explosion.. however, they have progressed past that point.

If you are new to the Blues Explosion, this, or 'Acme' would be a great place to start. If you are a long time Jon Spencer fan, listen to this album with an open mind.. and you may find that you actually enjoy it in its own right. In summary, this is a great album, and I highly recommend it.

this is weak.......2003-12-25

This is by far the weakest JSBX album of the lot. Sure its more accessible and sure its straight ahead rock, but its also limp in comparison to the other albums. If you are looking for a Blues Explosion album, start with Orange, or if you're looking for them in their primal form, check out Extra Width. These guys are getting old and the songs are a little tired, its kind of like buying one of those new Rolling Stones album without the nostalgia. Don't judge them by this album. It deserves more like 2 stars but I wanted to bring down the average.

Where have I been?.......2003-12-20

I found a Blues Explosion song on one of the Martin Scorcese blues compilation CDs and thought it was the best song on it. Its the first time I had ever heard of the Blues Explosion. I loved the hard edged rock/blues sound so I picked up Plastic Fang because it was the only Blues Explosion CD the store had. Holy cow! What a find, I love it. I really enjoy the way the drums chug along with the grinding guitar work. Nice and tight on changes and plenty of pop at all the right times. Plenty of different styles and varied sounds to keep the album fresh all the way through. I've got to hear more of this stuff. I'm suprised these guys aren't better known and it took me so long to find them.

The Bottom Line.......2003-09-03

Look, about 80% of all reviews on websites like these are 5 stars simply because die-hard fans want to show support for their favorite bands' new releases. I'm not sure if this is the case in my review, but if you have any sense of good newer American rock then you owe it to yourself to check out the Blues Explosion. Plastic Fang is a release that exemplifies the progression of a great rock band getting better over time, and this album is a great place to start. That being said, this album is not enough to truly experience this band for all they are. See them live, listen to their earlier work, and it will become clear that NO ONE can rock half as hard as this band; especially in the worst era of American rock to date. Thank God for bands like the Blues Explosion that prove Rock n' Roll in this country is far from dead.
