From its tongue-in-cheek cover art on down, Barenaked Ladies's Everything to Everyone is a surprisingly tough-minded survey of early 21st-century culture. Often accused of being too clever for their own good, Toronto's Ladies here provide a good deal of subtlety along with the expected tunefulness and genre-hopping. "Testing 1,2,3" is a complex song about nostalgia, singing in a rock & roll band that's loved for perhaps narrow reasons, and watching one's ex-girlfriend find a new lover. "Maybe Katie" presents two different views of the male fear of commitment before dropping a key bit of information about its title subject. And "Shopping" is a fist-in-velvet-glove tune in the tradition of the Housemartins's "Happy Hour;" could its happy-go-lucky chorus be a skewering of George W. Bush's pro-commerce response to Sept. 11? At the very least, it demonstrates that these guys fully understand the art and the implications of being all things to all people. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
I liked this CD!!.......2007-04-08
Well, I am a bit of a BNL fan. My first album that I got was "Gordon" back in the 90's....I also have "Stunt" and "Greatest Hits". I happened to buy this album from an online auction thinking I'd give it to a friend when I visit her next month...I even told her I'd got it for her. But after a few listens I am really hooked on this album and will now have to buy another copy so we can have one each!!
Not the best, but it grows on you..........2007-03-28
I originally came to bury this album, not to praise it. Upon first listening to it, my disgust was unbounded. Could this pathetic dreck be from the same band that produced "Maroon" and "Stunt", two desert-island albums of which pretty much every song is great? However, with additional listening, it kind of grows on you. It's not up to the standards of their best albums, and it contains several embarrassing tracks, like the stupid, trying-too-hard-to-be-whimsical "Another Postcard", but it's got some pretty good ones too, i.e. "War on Drugs", "Maybe Katie", "Have You Seen My Love?" All in all, it's a good, fun album in the BNL tradition.
Good Job BNL.......2006-08-14
I have recently been introduced to Barenecked Ladies Music. I have heard some of the songs from this cd on the radio and like them and thought I woudl go ahead and get this priduct. I have just purchased other BNL cds as well.
Bare Naked Pop.......2006-08-12
As a peripheral BNL fan, I have always admired the off beat sense of humor these guys dish out. With previous releases, I have been able to discover new things in repeated listenings. This cd got stale fast. Seems to be geared to the tween crowd. I am hopeful newer releases will stay true to the BNL I have enjoyed in years past.
BNL's more serious side.......2006-05-08
Those talented lads from Toronto created a smart, entertaining CD that makes you think. I have all of their other albums and while their older albums are great I have grown to prefer their more serious side which it seems appears more and more on each new album. This album doesn't change that trend. With the exception of the not so good "Another Postcard" and "Shopping" the album is full of entertaining songs.

Umph's=Greatness.......2006-12-02
Tyler, clearly you don't much about good musicianship. This band, especially the guitarists are the some of the best musicians around today. Umphrey's is not trying to be anybody, that is the most inaccurate statement i've heard in awile. In fact it's the opposite, they blend soo many different styles and genres, from blues to jazz to reggae to rock, that you cannot put a finger on their music. They can play anything and they are the tightest band around right now. Go see them live and you will be amazed and don't listen to "tyler"
Unimpressive.......2006-03-11
I saw Umphrey's McGee at the Chicago theatre and have to say I was a little disappointed. I hadn't heard their music before but had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, I can't say I was overly impressed. Here are my impressions - their music is just O.K. and the vocals (what little they have) are horrendous - off key and painful to listen to. During the show I couldn't help but get the impression that Umphrey's was trying to follow in the footsteps of the dead and phish - the music and attitude is undeniably "phishesque". Perhaps Umphrey's is trying to cash in on the void left by their absence, but truth is Umphrey's just isn't at the same level. The extraordinary musical talent found in Phish and the Dead is noticeably missing in Umphrey's. All that is left is a somewhat impressive light show and a theatre saturated with patchouli oil and herb. This is probably why the vast majority of their crowd consisted of high schoolers. Eager to be there for the "experience" and atmosphere, they simply didn't care that the music was sub-par or just didn't know any better.
better once youve heard it live.......2006-01-06
but there are so many tracks that are so much better live. dont get me wrong, i love this cd, but it dosent compare to live versions of most of the songs. all of the songs are great, but when played live, even when they arent jammed on are just better than whats on the cd. for instance, uncle wally on this cds okay but not as good as it is live and when its played electric.
all in all a great album. nothing too fancy and white mans moccosins are still some of my favorite um songs even with all their new stuff out
Keepin in Real.......2005-12-17
Sexy album. I have seen Umphreys a number of times, and have quite a bit of their music, and this is my go to when I want some Umphreys. I like it better than Anchor Drops (which is also great), because it feels a little more open and free, AD can get dense and heavy at times (which is good, because it doesn't just sound like more of the same).
I like the use of acoustics as lead guitars in Uncle Wally and Water. Andy's Last Beer is a song anyone will like. Ringo, Roulette and Hurt Bird Bath are very very sexy, but my favorite song (which I have yet to hear live) is 2nd Self, mainly because of the last minute of so, which is a nice little guitar jam...BUT IT, LISTEN TO IT!
(and read the liner notes, they're fun)
Not your average white band.......2005-07-29
"Local Band Does O.K." is far superior than "Anchor Drops" in my view. If you liked AD, you'll want LBDOK.
Some have compared UM to Phish, but I don't hear it. These guys ain't about one guy as much as Phish.

Really, really, catchy; really, really good........2005-01-12
This is an album that has to grow on you. It had to grow on me, and I needed to listen to it a few times to appreciate it. My personal favorites are "For You" and "Upside Down," though every track is pretty good. "Shopping" had a slightly too subtle joke. It's true that in the second half, the album oses a little quality, but the really good tunes in the first half more than make up for that. There's something for everyone here--except those who will not, under any circumstances, listen to pop music of any kind, regardless of quality.
I love this CD.......2004-01-20
Before this album, I would have considered myself someone who liked BNL. After this CD, I consider myself someone who LOVES BNL. I got to see them in concert and perform the songs before I heard the CD. When I went to their concert, I knew it was going to be a good CD because I liked every song they performed (even though they were mostly new to me). There is a nice variety of tracks to suit different styles and moods.
Another great one.......2003-12-23
Barenaked Ladies is in top form for their newest release. This collection shows how amazing they can be, with songs ranging from the silliness of "Another Postcard" to the haunting sadness of "War on Drugs." Steven Page puts his powerful voice to wonderful use on the latter, a solemn reflection on addiction and suicide.
Ed Robertson is well-represented too, providing lead vocals for about half the songs. His voice is edgier than Page's, and he only contributed two lead vocals to their previous release, Maroon. He and Page should always split the vocal duties as evenly as they do here.
The songwriting ranges from rock to folk-country to ballads, and the superb musicianship never misses.
That said, the disc isn't perfect. "Shopping," featuring the incomparable Blue Man Group, was meant to be a satirical take on the Bush administration's urging people to spend money in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. As the band has admitted since, though, the point is too subtle and as a result, the song comes off as empty to people who don't already know what it is supposed to mean.
"Another Postcard," while a fine song showing the band's lighthearted side, was a poor choice for a first single. Many people who discovered the band with "One Week" from 1998's "Stunt" have not been exposed to their other dimensions and write them off as a novelty act. Releasing the one silly song first just reinforces that misconception.
The DVD that comes with the deluxe package is a real added value. The 5.1 surround mix sounds amazing on a good surround system. And there is a 45-minute film of the band performing most of the album (all but two songs) acoustically, which captures them just hanging around having fun and is fun to watch.
This is the band's sixth studio recording. I highly recommend anything they've done, and Everything to Everyone is no exception.
Great record--won't bring new fans in, however..........2003-12-16
Well, as a HUGE BNL fan, I naturally counted down the months, weeks, and days until Everything to Everyone was released, and was quite excited to pick it up and take it for a spin. And the first listen?? Not great. Kinda weird, kinda uneventful. But it all sank in after about 3-4 listens. It's a very listenable record, perhaps moreso than any other disc in their catalog. The boys are trying on several different styles here, and unlike in the past (particularly on Maroon and Born on a Pirate Ship), it actually seems to work here. Power pop ("Maybe Katie"), mournful ballads ("War On Drugs"), acoustic torch and twang ("Have You Seen My Love?"), 70's soft rock (my top pick of the litter, "Take It Outside"), and something I like to refer to as polka tango (on "Upside Down")--this record slips into many outfits, and looks pretty good in all of them. Also fun to hear are the little details thrown into more traditional BNL sounds, like a splash of "ballroom jazz" and a lullabye melody in "Next Time". Not the place to start if you're looking to get acquainted with the band, but definitely a nice pickup for seasoned listeners.
A little bit for everyone.......2003-12-10
This CD is a great addition to BNL's music. I love the mix of sounds, from "Shopping"'s eighties flashback Go-Gos style to "For You"'s rockabilly-folksy feel. "Have You Seen My Love?" reminds me of an early Beatles era tune. Of course there's "Another Postcard"...the list just keeps going. A must for any BNL fan. Did I mention "Celebrity"? Another fave.

Best cut: The sweet spitting venom of Alexakis's phrasing on the Go-Go's classic, "Our Lips Are Sealed." Cut #3, "What Do I Get," is ROCKIN'! Plus, it's NEVER been released on disc, until NOW! Cut #4 is a terrific, driving, straight-ahead cover of John H. Smith Jr.'s guitar-rock instrumental perenial, "Walk Don't Run." And the opener, of course, is the bitter, beautiful, single, "Everything to Everyone," from Everclear's CD, "So Much for the Afterglow." Grab this one, it's a beaut. It will stay in your cd player rotation, long after the afterglow of the first listen!
