Lots of young indie bands call the music industry on its superficiality but few do it with such obvious distaste as the Riverboat Gamblers. On the feral, catchy track "The Biz Loves Slut," the Austin, Texas punk band looks at the world through the eyes of a record company suit and, well, it's brutal: "We think your songs might need a better hook/ I promise on the good book, it won't hurt/ I won't get it in your mouth." To The Confusion of Our Enemies, the group's second release, proves that no spreadsheets are required to make an album that matches passion and attitude with crafty riffs and knockout choruses. Meanwhile, freewheeling rock tracks such as "The Gamblers Try Their Hand at International Diplomacy" and "Don't Bury Me... I'm Still Not Dead"--which probably owe more to classic guitar rock heroics than the band would care to admit--reveal why Riverboat Gamblers was named by no less authority than Rolling Stone as one of the "Top 5 bands to break out at this year's SXSW." --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Since 2001, Texas's Riverboat Gamblers have cultivated a fanatical following with their rowdy energetic live shows that have led to supporting slots on tours with Flogging Molly, Hot Water Music, Burning Brides, and the MC5, as well as a 2005 stint on the Van's Warped Tour. "Don't Bury Me" will be included in the Van's 2006 Warped Tour compilation on Side One Dummy, and "Walk Around Me" is included on the "Take Action Vol. 5" compilation (Sub City/Hopeless), in stores February.

Very good stuff.......2007-04-26
I'm kinda corn-fused why some people are rating this so low? Sure, it sounds different then their previous releases. Sure it's a bit more "polished" then previous releases. But that's not to say that this isn't a darn fine slab of rock. Great writing, big hooks, lightning quick guitars. What's not to love? I'd give it 4 1/2 stars, but one doesn't exist, so 4 it is.
GFFG!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-14
The Gamblers rule, if this is an unknown fact to you, then you are either deaf, never heard them, or just dumb. If the first or last are the case, then you are screwed, if it's the second, then buy this record, and treat your ears the punk rock ear candy that is the Gamblers. An intense live act, that causes physical injury to all those on stage. Playing songs that will recall equal parts Rocket From The Crypt, AC DC, Radio Birdman, The Rip Offs, and other classic yesteryear punk rock, but make no mistake, this rock is all 100% Gamblers!
lost the edge.......2006-11-10
i have seen this band live about 5 times back during the "Something to Crow About" days. i must say they rocked the house like no other each time. In my opinion Something to Crow About is a five star album. on stage Mike Weibe used to make fun of Good Charlotte. On To the confusion of our enemies the riverboat gamblers sound more like good charlotte than themselves. wasted my money. maybe it's the new lineup changes. all three previous albums are better than this one.
High-energy punk rock.......2006-11-10
I first heard of the Riverboat Gamblers from the Warped Tour 2006 compilation CD. As soon as I heard "Don't Bury Me...I'm Still Not Dead" I knew that I had to own the CD.
"To The Confusion Of Our Enemies" is full of punk rck with attitude, but on the other hand doesn't take itself too seriously. "Don't Bury Me" is a high-speed ballad, "Biz Loves Sluts" is a thinly-veiled poke at Hollywood, and tracks such as "The Gamblers Try Their Hand At International Diplomacy" and "Unicorn Shave Your Horn" are just the band messing around and having a good time.
With a sound somewhere that punk and alternative rock lovers alike can appreciate, the "To The Confusion Of Our Enemeies" is a solid addition to any rocker's collection.
decent punk album.......2006-09-08
This is decidedly not as good as "Something to Crow About". Not as many hooks or "singalongs" as STCA had, which is disappointing. The songs aren't as memorable, which is unfortunate.
But that doesn't mean it's not worth the money. There are a few really great gems such as "Don't Bury Me... I'm Still Not Dead", "The Song We Used to Call 'Wasting Time'", and "Year of the Rooster", which has a bit of a throw back to 70's style punk.
All in all, it's good, but not great. Again, it's worth the money but don't expect it to be better or as good as STCA.

Guitarist-composer Kurt Rosenwinkel has a poetic spirit capable of both intriguing innovation and arty pretension. Some of Rosenwinkel's conceptions fall flat. "Cubism," for example, which he describes as "a 12-bar arrangement of the 12 major keys--one key per bar," is meant to parallel "the way cubist painters fragmented the basic elements of their art" but turns out to be a rather bland hopscotch. And "The Polish Song" is a quavering acoustic ballad sung by Rosenwinkel in a high-pitched gibberish that he imagines "might be Polish." But there's also evidence here as to why Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and especially Joshua Redman praise Rosenwinkel so effusively in the liner notes. His tunes are distinctive in ways small and large: a chiming bell on the "Number Ten" signature riff puts a cherry on that song's buoyant sundae of flavors, while "Dream of the Old," is a multihued tone poem that perfectly captures the wistful/peaceful/equivocal tenor of the aging process. At its best, Rosenwinkel's guitar work is reminiscent of Scofield's curlicue phrasing and full-bodied tone. The rest of the quintet handles the diverse material with sensitivity and aplomb, particularly saxophonist Mark Turner and bassist Ben Street. --Britt Robson
Customer Reviews:
One of the finest and most creative jazz guitarist playing today.......2005-10-16
'The Enemies of Energy' is a great album. And Scofields remark of Rosenwinkel being 'the finest en most creative jazz guitarist today' is not one of a delusional drunk, but a statement of another great jazzguitarist, one that knows his business. Pat Metheny says about Rosenwinkel that he has vision and that Rosenwinkel works hard to meet his personal criteria of what music is.
Metheny and Scofield make no false statements. Indeed, Rosenwinkel is one of the great. His skills on the guitar are tremendous, his compositions are succesfull endeavours to immortality.
Track 4 starts Scofield like and turns out to be more a Metheny kind of thing. I think Rosenwinkels style is amidst their styles, but one can not say that Rosenwinkel is nothing else but a mere mixture of Scofield and Metheney. He has his own notions and puts them on disc after disc.
The greatness of this album is not only to be found in the composing and guitarplaying Rosenwinkel. It is also a case of groupeffort.
Mark Tuner is also one of the greatest musians. His saxplaying strikes me again and again. Check his efforts on Matthias Lupri's latest album. Wauw! I saw Tuner play in the Dave Holland Big Band (NSJF 2005)! Excellent performing! 'The Enemies of Energy' is trough the interaction of Mark Tuner and Kurt Rosenwinkel one of high standard.
Ben Street and Jeff Ballard are also great artists. Just check the work the have done in the recent years. These guys are every where and all around. On this album they play a couple of very modern rhythms.
Mayby this second album of Rosenwinkel is not his best, but it of high quality and it has more than some elements that I find interesting. The usage of acoustic guitars and the 4 string stella is a new element on Rosenwinkels albums. This new element proves to be essential for this album. Especialy in combination with the piano. The acoustic guitars lift Rosenwinkel his music to new levels, it brings new meaning to his melodic poetry and makes the whole sound sound even more full, though the fullness is also smoothend by it.
Enjoy!
But note: Rosenwinkel is not a singer! Hope he will not do that again!
Emphatically!!! A must listen........2001-08-18
This guitarist's second album under his leadership is, to the greatest extent of any guitarist's album, as much about a full complement of instruments in balanced contribution as about guitar fireworks. The thematic content and development are sensitive, tight, and potent. At moments there is something reminescent of Scofield... of Holdsworth... of Abercrombie. Yet there is, in the entirety, something wholly original happening and it's utterly exciting. The phrases catch you off balance and play with your sense of timing and momentum like some heady amusement park ride. While the harmonic content is as edgy and fresh as metallic blue neon. This album, as well as his latest "The Next Step" are of that phenomenon where a sense of urgency emerges as waves of unanticipated originality in musical thought catch you in their undertow. Like the days of summer childhood at the beach... there is something innocent and joyful. Yet these are important moments.... moments you'll want to remember... You'll want to hum these tunes in your head... Your soul wants to swim as freely as these dolphins.... always!
Best album of the Millenium.......2001-01-14
Sure, its only 2001, but I suspect this album would be in my millenial top ten even in 2999. Abandon all pretense when you toss these tracks on the old stereo system, and be prepared for a great step in the evolution of jazz. Rosenwinkel's compositions and arrangements are amazing to say the least, and every solo is a pristine example of what modern jazz improvisation should be.
If Rosenwinkel's guitar virtuosity isn't enough, then just wait for Mark Turner's Tenor Sax action. Turner might be the hottest sax player out there, and he certainly argues his case well on this album. The rest of the quintet (a regularly perfroming group, so everthing is TIGHT) consists of pianist and keyboardist Scott Kinsey, Bass-man Ben Street, and drummer Jeff Ballard. These three are no slouches themselves, and deliver top-notch performances.
Mind you, this is not trad jazz, its not Metheny, and I've been unable as of yet to give it a classification. All I can say is that its fun, hip and intellectual all at the same time, and it spends a disproportionate amount of time in my CD player.
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2001-01-09
Take the cool vamps of Larry Coryell, the chord voicings of Pat Metheny, and the freedom of John Scofield, and you start to recognize the new sound of young guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. But don't stop there. Mr. Rosenwinkel has developed his own special qualities -- and it's a breath of fresh air in the very crowded world of jazz guitar.
One of the things that first struct me is Rosenwinkel's use of fast picking techiques, rather than the more common use of legatto playing that many of the young players are using. This gives his sound an edgy feel, reminiscent of early jazz-rock.
And while Rosenwinkel's playing is distinctive, it is the music that captures your attention. On the surface each track is sensitive with a hint of dissonance, but behind it is a threating storm. Take the scond track, which lulls you into thinking it is standard funk piece, until you start hearing the overlaying of complex keyboard and sax melodies, and then the raunchy guitar riffs on top.
There are very few pyro-techniques here. The musicians play in service of the music. Tenor saxophonist Mark Turner plays most of the leads, and does so with finess and grace. Scott Kinsey, from Tribal Tech, works well with the group, adding accoustic piano and synth support when needed. The rhythm section consisting of Ben Street in bass and Jeff Ballard on drums do a fine job of keeping the music on track.
This is a fine album from a fresh new voice in jazz.
boring.......2000-09-14
If only "complex time signatures, complex chord changes, and complex sounds" ensured good music. They do not and this is not a good record.

Numerous bands took inspiration from the Clash, P.I.L., and Gang of Four, and did something new and inspirational with that post-punk, herky-jerky rollercoaster anthemic style of funk bravado. Take Holland's the Ex, for example: over twenty years after starting as anarchist squatters railing against what sell-outs Gang of Four were, they're infusing their music with new textures borrowed from improvised and African music, and in many ways are more politically relevant than ever. On the other hand, New York-based Radio 4--whose name is borrowed from Public Image Limited and their sound a cleaned-up walk through of the greatest hits of the Clash and Gang of Four--fail to bring much that is new or interesting to their third album. It makes for decent-enough music to ogle pretty people in slanty haircuts out of the corner of your eyes to, while also trying to get the bartender's attention. But surely there are higher things to aspire to in music, especially when one rather clumsily apes music that was trying to make some sort of a difference. --Mike McGonigal

Strongest Showing yet .......2006-11-30
The band has their strongest showing on this third recording. Traipsing through a melange of styles influenced by the oft-mentioned like of GoF and PIL (and the Clash on this record), Radio 4 somehow adds new textures and depth to their songs that create unique new sounds. With slashing linear guitars and reggae back beats, the drum/bass heavy production references respect for the still unique sound of PiL's Metal Box (still in a class by itself). This recording is a delight all the way through, with my personal favorites the rocker "Enemies Like Us" and the reggae "Ascension Street". Why this band has not broken out like the other NY bands of their vintage remains a mystery to me, as the music is the equal of Interpol and better than the Strokes.
Those who paint in familiar schemas only offend accsutomed tastes.......2006-08-04
Let's face it your punk NERDS- this is not mainstream music, and is not intended to be. These guys have no intention of selling out the Garden- but they would like to appeal to your taste- but perhaps the 'memory' is sweeter than what it actually is. To critique what these guys are doing is to critique what their critics claim they evoke. What we have here will later be seen as revisionist, and cannot be reduced to simple 'covers' of any particular bands 'sound.' These bands lit the torch and let it die away. Radio 4 is bringing the energy and message back. What I will critique is hearing such strong political comment in a Mitsubishi, Coca-cola or Budweiser ad. But, hey, every communist deserves to make a buck, right?
Great stuff.......2006-06-11
Radio 4 was always one of the better bands from NYC in the past few years. Maybe they were overlooked because they weren't trying so hard to look cool. The music speaks for itself. It's pretty damn good. This album sounds like their most full sounding record yet. There is a real maturity on this record. There are some jamming hits like "Enemies Like This" and "Too Much To Ask For." This album was influenced by the live show no doubt. Radio 4 has been on the road touring for almost two years non-stop. I saw them with the Libertines and Gang of Four. There are a few more electronic sounds and live performances. This album sound very diverse. Radio 4 have expanded the sound and haven't repeated themselves. They are really evolving the sound, and that includes a lot of diverse music.

STANDING TALL ONCE AGAIN..........2006-08-31
Once again, Alove For Enemies comes out of the corner swinging like a prize fighter with "Resistance". As excellant of an album as "The Harvest" was, this one shines even brighter. This is hard-core laced with enough metal to please any fan of heavy music. What these guys do is nothing new, they just put their own spin on it, and make one killer album. It's cool that these bros aren't ashamed to stand bold either, addressing their faith and tackeling issues head on. I couldn't pick one track to call my fav. because this whole entire disc kicks! If you have a wife and small kids, send them into town to do a few errands, bolt down any breakable objects, and crank this baby loud. You will not be disappointed with this one either. Go ahead, shell out the nine bucks instead of blowing it at Taco Bell, and have an album to enjoy for many repeated spins. Once again, these boys deliver the goods, proving hard core is alive, breathing, and as lethal as ever. These guys deserve the respect they're starting to get. And for a live show...yeah, just try to match the energy. All the way around, however you wanna stack it, Alove For Enemies comes out on top and stands victorious once again.

Customer Reviews:
This album rocks!.......2006-06-05
This is Nevermore's sixth full-length album another peak in the band's rapid ascend in the metal scene. The band is former SANCTUARY members Warrel Dane (vocals), Jeff Looms (guitar) and Jim Sheppard (bass). Throw in drummer Van Williams and you've got Nevermore. At first I didn't think to much about this album but the more I lessened to it the more I liked it. I started to hear all the master qualities that I missed when giving the album a quick once over. If your a Nevermore fan reading this then you might understand where I'm coming from with that last comment. The thing that caught my attention was Jef Looms's solo on I; Voyager and Enemies of Reality is pretty heavy. I think it does metal justice in my opinion. To me its the small things that make an album or a song good. This album may not be there best but it rocks pretty d### good to me.
It had to happen sooner or later..........2005-12-29
If I weren't biased, I would have only given one star.
Every good band does it... sell out. You can hear some of each song in every song on this album. Nevermore's last masterpiece was DEAD HEART, after that...
It's not that the songs are BAD. They're just linear. On DEAD HEART, NM switched gears with each song. This was especially so on their EP IN MEMORY. Each song was a masterpiece you could hang on the wall and admire as an individual work of art.
ENEMIES is a collection that you get the sense of the genius behind it only collectively. None of the songs really stand out on their own merit.
But hey. Awesome band. These aren't guitar-slinging nuts, these are musicians to be reckoned with. Their guitar work is unrivaled and the lyrics aren't just to meat up the sound.
They just didn't dispense with their talent as well as they usually do, that's all.
But that doesn't discredit their value as a legendary band.
What the heck happened to the production?.......2005-11-04
The only reason I'm giving this album a 2 instead of a 1 is because I think under all that muddy noise is some real good music. If I set my EQ just right I can hear something that sounds good. It might just be in my imagination but I can't fault the band completely for a bad production house. But, like the title says, this CD has HORRIBLE, DEPLORABLE, TERRIBLE, SAD, MISERABLE production quality. There are some CD's you buy that sound good on only certain types of stereo equipment. This cd sounds TERRIBLE on all configurations. The only album that I can think of that has just as bad if not worse production quality is "St.Anger" by Metallica, but at least Nevermore's music is still good, so that's the upside. Please Nevermore, if you are reading any of these reviews, I'm almost positive that your songs are awesome. Please produce another CD. We won't think any less of you!!! I just want to hear these awesome tunes. :(
look past the production!.......2005-09-12
I have yet to hear the remixed version, but this is a great cd, except for the song right before the last song, it's not very good. If not for that song, I'd give it a five.
I loved Sanctuary and liked the first Nevermore cd, but never got into them since the first cd.
This cd made me realise that they do indeed rock!
The songs are amazing and hopefully the remix sounds better, but if that didn't exist, I would be more than happy with this version.
Progressive shredfest somehow spoiled by muddy production........2005-08-23
This release is the second album I get from Nevermore. Compared to "This Godless Endeavour" (the other album I got) I think it's a bit more technical, but sadly the production does harm the final result -- yes, I own the original version, not the remastered one. While I love the dark, menacing sound of the rhythm guitar, the muddiness of the mix makes the listening experience not very enjoyable. It's a shame that Kelly Gray, who fairly played guitar for Queensryche, isn't equally good in playing the knobs and gauges for Nevermore. The abuse of voice overdubs (or harmonizers?), the unclear drumming and the overall felling that every instrument bleeds into the other; all that it's far from what I would call a good job. I hope the remastered version fixed all those issues -- I guess I'll purchase it, eventually.
Apart from the production problems, the songs here are very interesting. The first thing that I loved when I played the album was how Jeff Loomis doesn't shy when soloing. This guy is simply amazing, and here I guess he wanted to show his chops offs. So, be prepared to get a generous dose of serious shredding lead guitar.
Back to the songs, well, they don't have many hooks, but they do hit your head really hard. I like the dark melodies showing some modernized Iron Butterfly reminiscences. The lyrics and the arrangements are top-notch. These guys are in the league of Dream Theater and Fates Warning, no doubt about that. My personal highlights are "Never Purify" (that pounding sound, that middle section, and that fast solo!), "Noumenon" (a weird, but great song) and "Seed Awakening" (sometimes thrashy, sometimes menacing, with amazing lyrics and a very progressive feeling). I also like "I, Voyager" (for headbangers' guilty pleasures, with a "bonus" melodic chorus and a flashy guitar solo), "Ambivalent" (GREAT solo too) and "Enemies of Reality" (which contains another amazing solo from Loomis). As you see, I can remember almost every song here, so the pleasure is guaranteed for metal lovers.
To end the review, my main complains are, one, the aforementioned production problems; two, its length (it's way too short!) and three, Warrel Dane certainly is a fair-enough vocalist, but I would like him to showcase a wider range. Anyways, in spite of those (perhaps not so minor) flaws, the musicianship of these guys is so great, the compositions here are so good and the performance of the band is so tight that I don't dare to give to this album less than four stars. So, if you like a heavier variant of progressive rock, this is an album made for your tastes, besides any defect it might have. Go for it NOW!

PERFECT ANTIDOTE TO 2007 REGGAE.......2007-01-05
Vocals : 5 Backing : 5 Production : 5 Sound quality : 5 Sleeve : 5
Reggae in 2007 is increasingly becoming a pastiche, a dull travesty.
As a genre, reggae was always characterised by its willingness to tear up the plans, to destroy accepted conventions, with the intention of beating out new paths and rebel stances. This was particularly true of dub, a form so splintered and subtracted that it negated all cliché born out of the 12 bar blues format that had totally dominated and ossified music until the late 70's.
However -- in 2007, we have strictly clichéd, formulaic euro dub, which focuses on obsession with "weight", volume, cod and insincere mystical lyrics and dumb steppers fixations. Just like heavy metal really, in many respects. It's either that -- or JA one drops with a weak brittle snare sound, tired, cynically insincere reruns of old arrangements and in many cases, blatantly fake righteous lyrics.
That's why it's such a pleasure that BAF have at last re-issued this gem. For an album that has been as influential as this one, it is surprising we have had to wait this long for a definitive re-issue. And this one IS the definitive copy, replete with four rare 12" discomix rare cuts, and two dub plates, mixed by Jammy's.
The mastering is thunderous, clean and heavy -- reggae purists justifiably complain about thin sounds on CD -- and they are right to do so. Typically, there is something bland, sanitised in CD production values. But this mastering comes close to the warmth and depth of vinyl grooves replete with booming bass grooves and slashing, scything guitar highs. Then there is the sheer diversity of style showcased here -- thank God it isn't all tired, banal steppers -- because who would want more of that in 2007. ( Flogging an exhausted, uninspired dead horse, year in year out...)
"Blood A Go Run" has a sinewy funk bass groove and scouring percussion, with its "Emmanuel" D.Brown style vocal arrangement. "Love In A Zimba" has a country /Delta /Chicago blues fusion guitar groove, and a Blue Note Lou Donaldson style horns arrangement. Think Donaldson's "Pretty Things" album. Earl Chinna seems to take a leaf out of the Lightning Hopkins and Wes Montgomery's music book here. Then there are the church influenced tunes like "And Amlak" and the stunning "Pick The Beam". The album closes with two immaculate and inventive dub plate cuts to "Pick The Beam."
The sleeve notes too, are intriguing to reflect on -- all too often sleeve notes are poorly written and made up of dull second hand news -- but Steve Barrow knows the men he writes about, knows them as long term friends and colleagues -- and this shows in the quality and content of his narrative. Interestingly, the sleeve notes explain that "Deliver Me from My Enemies" was written to ward off the threat of Obeah magic.
Michael Prophet clearly has a good insight into Yabby Yu -- "Yabby Yu inna class by himself . That Ras there is a very strong Ras, and you have to be strong to deal with like Yabby Yu. : head strong, rootically strong, Biblically strong, and physically strong." ( Steve Barrow's sleeve notes, 2007 ).

Album Description
Label Description: Headlights are at the forefront of the resurgent scene happening in the twin cities of Champaign-Urbana. By exhibiting an uncanny ability to merge electronics with the barest of pop elements, they carve a unique niche for themselves that falls nicely between My Bloody Valentine and The Postal Service. Originally released as a limited edition CD EP, the band sold over 1,500 copies of "The Enemies EP" through two national tours and sales on the Polyvinyl web site. This release paves the way for their forthcoming full-length. Headlights have played with The Delgados, Headphones, Mates Of State, Mono, Crooked Fingers, Earlimart, and Explosions In The Sky.

Stronger than You'd Think.......2006-04-21
Most of the time when a band releases a debut EP it can't be described as amazing. Promising? Yes. But rarely can a debut EP be described as amazing.
The debut EP from Headlights breaks the mold. This EP is staggeringly good. Erin Fein (vocals/keyboards), Brett Sanderson (drums) and Tristan Wraight (vocals/guitar/bass), just flat out rock.
The strongest track on the album is obviously "Everyone Needs a Fence to Lean On" (I'm not alone in this opinion, the track was recently featured on Grey's Anatomy), which starts with vocals from Fein that haunt like those of Chan Marshall, but are of a softer, instantly embracing sort. After that the song takes a turn and becomes an upbeat toe-tapper that will have you singing along with what is quite possibly the best hook I've ever heard.
The EP opener, "Tokyo," almost begins like a Pixies song, but then sweeps into a melodic start and stop indie-electronica track. The middle tracks "Centuries" and "It Isn't Easy to Live That Well" can be compared to Postal Service songs, but that gives the wrong impression of these tracks, which take what some would call a "stock sound" and turns it on its head (Take the Velvet Underground-esque solo in "It Isn't Easy..." for instance).
Having recently seen the band live here in Missoula, Mont. I can say that they are also a great live band as well, and if you get the chance to see them why not pick up their 7-inch single as well?
Their album is due May 9, but you should definetly listen to this before then. It is well worth purchasing.

My introduction to Nevermore.......2006-07-25
And what and introduction I received! One of my good friends recommended that I purchase the re-release of 'Enemies of Reality' as opposed to the original release. I picked up this album at a BestBuy over a year ago. First of all, Andy Sneap (genius) helped Nevermore with the overall sound and production with re-mixing and re-mastering the release. Most of the music that Andy Sneap produces usually sounds very good. He has an ear for great music. Moving on to the album, Nevermore continue their greatness of making great heavy metal.
Vocalist and lyricist Warrell Dane writes deeply emotional and relevent lyrics alongside breathtaking guitarist Jeff Loomis who can solo and riff until your brains ooze out your ears. The album stars out with the title track (Enemies of Reality) that is still to this day my favorite song by Nevermore. The song, Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday, is a slower-paced song that is fun to crank over and over. 'I Voyager' is a fun song to hear live and the music video is pretty good. I was very impressed with Nevermore's riffing, obvious world-class talent, and Dane's top-notch vocals.
Nevermore's style of music should be appealing to many different fans of heavy metal. Their music is hard to pin-point, with some calling it power metal with elements of progressive. Call it what you want, but we have one of the best American metal bands right now in the genre. If you havn't seen this band live yet, DO IT! They put on a great show and play songs spanning their musical careers. The past four Nevermore albums, back with 'Dreaming Neon Black' all the way to 'This Godless Endeavor' are elite. Listeners should not be dissapointed. Listen and headbang!
Whoa!... This sounds KILLER!.......2006-06-27
With all due respect to anyone who actually liked the originally mix of this disc, it didn't sound anything like Nevermore. This may be sacrilege to many who read this, but I actually traded in the original pressing of "Enemies" at my local used C.D. store, because I couldn't even get through the first few tracks. I've been a fan of Dane & Co. since the Sanctuary days, and I've never had such a distaste for anything they've recorded. For those of you who still have not heard this abysmally atrocious debut of Nevermore playing grunge (seriously- I'm not even sure you can actually hear a single guitar solo on the whole disc), splurge and get the re-mix. Andy Sneap deserves HUGE kudos for cleaning up this mess. No, it still doesn't sound as good as their other releases, but it sounds a sh@tload better than it did. In short, it sounds like a Nevermore album (forgive the use of that antiquated term).
More objectively, judging the disc on its own merits, this is still not Nevermore's best stuff- even with the brilliant re-mix. If you're a fan already, you gotta have it. It's good. If, however, you're relatively new to the band, practically anything else from their catalogue would be a better place to start than this one. My personal recommendations would be "Dead Heart" and/or "Dreaming Neon Black".
Seed Awakening.......2006-03-02
To be honest, at first I avoided buying this remaster of the album, due to low budget I have, but decided so after enjoying the album "This Godless Endeavor" to the point of being able to be Warrel's backup on vox, I decided to pick up the remixed/remastered copy of "Enemies of Reality". First off, for the most part this is very much better mix of the songs, and without doubt the second half of the album.
But I guess first I'll give you the bad that still keeps this album from reaching 5 stars. The Vidoes were great, but somehow they only seem to play in mono on my pc. I don't know why. Second, the length of the album is still at 40:53 which for me is way too short. No bonus songs added or even live songs from the album or something. Videos are ok, but they are not playable on normal cd players. Save those Vids tho, I want a video collection after 4 more albums. :P
Now for a Quick review of the remastering of the album (plus's and minus's)
1. Enemies Of Reality- For the most part this track is just easyer to hear. Sounds are more appearent. The vocals sound a bit different too. I think the vocals in some parts in this song have been rerecorded. Or maybe Andy Sneap used a different master tape of Warrel. The Track overall, really ain't all that different from the older version.
2. Ambivalent- This track is more clearer mix, there seems to be more vocal tracks in this mix. Seems like something is a bit different about the guitar solo which makes it more interesting. This song improved greatly from Andy Sneap.
3. Never Purify- Without a doubt the verses sound better in this version. clearer vocals.
4. Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday- This track really changed alot from the older mix. The guitar in the verses is more acoustic sounding. Probably the one track that changed the most.
5. I, Voyager - Not a great deal of difference here. The track is a bit clearer. Making it a bit more enjoyable. But this is one point where Andy didn't do much different, probably cause the track is pretty much the best the way it is.
6. Create The Infinite- This song was the worst for me on the older version of this song. And so, Andy focused on fixing the track. Its clear he sent more time than Kelly anyways. The Quiet annoy bridge was fixed totally. The vocals are now louder and more destict. The music there also slightly up.
7. Who Decides- Intro has vocals this time as it fades in, the mix is clear and crisp. Nothing more to say here.
8. Noumenon- This track seemed to be Mixed about the same as the older version except, at the end some vocals and guitar is more clearer. It's hard to tell the difference between the 2 versions of this song.
9. Seed Awakening- This song was overlooked to be frank on the older one. This time the vocals are clear, and the quiet weird bridges were turned up too. This track at the end of the day sounds now very different from Noumenon.
V1. Enemies of Reality- The Video is fun to watch, the only problem is how they edited the song so it was more the length that a radio hit is. I miss those parts cut out. Man Warrel sure does the hand singals enough. lol
V2. I, Voyager- This Video is very cool. Love the look of Warrel in this one. Vampires are so much fun to see played. Warrel is so Evil in this video. Love it!
V3. Enemies of Reality(Live at Wachen 2004)- Great Live show. They know how to do it live, thats for sure.
Verdict is this is better than the older version mixed by Kelly. Get the remastered version, if you want sharp vocals, and more focus tempo. The one time I'd suggest the older version , is maybe the title track. Most tracks are much better. This album is being sold at the Century Media web site. Buy it there.
SO MUCH BETTER..........2005-09-14
This is so much better than the original mix.
The drums actually sound good, not that crappy "St. Anger" drum sound that was on the original mix.
The guitars aren't quite as thick, but I'll take thinner guitars over crappy drum sound any day.
Andy Sneap should get an award for his job on this remix!!!!
These songs(and I heard the original mix first) made me get into Nevermore again after 8 years of not paying attention.
Now I own the whole collection.
AMAZING, JUST AMAZING!!!!!!!
If you haven't bought any Nevermore cds, I would get this one first!
Yes, definitively better than the original........2005-09-01
I own the original version, and in this new one the vocals are certainly brought upfront, everything is better defined, drums and bass sound far tighter, and the mix is way cleaner. However, the rhythm guitar's tone does suffer a bit. The ballsy mood, the deep dark tone that Kelly Gray succeeded in reflecting on the original version is somewhat lost here -- though just slightly, to be fair. But definitively, this remastered and remixed release is much more brilliant. The band shines as it should have in the first try; and the final product is unarguably better rounded. Given that the music in this album is pure metal genius, I have to give to this "corrected" version its well deserved five stars. Adding the fact that they included three videos in the enhanced section, one of them with the band performing "Enemies of reality" live, you bet you won't be disappointed -- this fairly compensates for the short duration of this album. In few words, consider giving to the original album a second try by purchasing this one, and you won't regret it. As this review's title points out: yes, definitively better than the original.
