It's tough to find a guitar-pop CD as good as Dancers.

This lovely CD features Renée Fleming singing religious music in an unaffected, lovely manner. Many favorites are here: both the Bach/Gounod and Schubert versions of "Ave Maria," each offered with long breaths and soft tone; "Rejoice Greatly" from Messiah, delivered with virtuosity and gleaming sound, and "He Shall Feed His Flock," also from Messiah, sung in a smooth, laid-back manner. Bits of the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc Gloria are welcome, as is the gorgeous "L'Adieu des Bergers" from L'Enfance du Christ. In the prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel, Fleming is joined by the splendid Susan Graham, and a version of "Amazing Grace" features Mark O'Connor on violin. Two excerpts from Mozart's Mass in C Minor, pieces by Reger and Franck, and a few surprises round out this devotional CD. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
I hate to be rude, but . . ........2007-05-06
As stated earlier, I hate to be rude. However, Renee Fleming is not one of the greatest singers that I have heard. At many times, it sounds as if she is drunk, sliding into her notes at times. She also has a habit of hitting a note, and then quickly moving up or down for "dramatic effect". I'm sorry, but I just cannot listen to this. I know that everyone has their own opinions, and this is mine.
She is still a beautiful woman, and always will be. I have seen her concerts online, and she ISN'T bad, it's just that she doesn't have what I'm looking for in an opera singer!
Outstanding.......2007-03-07
I had seen this program on PBS and wanted the CD. Wonderful selection
of music and Renee Fleming's outstanding voice.
Sacred Songs.......2007-01-21
I always look for new presentations of Christmas songs. Rene Flemming did an excellent job in this recording. She has a super voice but sometimes the words of the song get lost in her singing style
My favorite of Fleming's CDs so far.......2006-12-07
There are only two cuts on this CD I tend to flip past (Amazing Grace and the Leonard Bernstein cut), but other than them, I totally love the rest! The cuts in German are divine! I could listen to this CD over and over again.
Inspiring and beautiful.......2006-07-20
I've always loved Renee Fleming's singing and this most recent album is just beautiful in every way. A rich voice, beautiful singing and a devout and magnificent artist. She makes even the most notorious evergreens come to life anew. I enjoyed it very much.

Robert Craft & Stravinsky: 3 Ballets on Themes of Greek Mythology.......2006-12-20
Naxos is doing us all a most welcome favor by re-releasing the Robert Craft performances of Stravinsky (and some Webern, and some Schoenberg) that earlier passed through on labels like MusicMaster and Koch Classics.
On this disc we get three of the later ballets that the composer did, based on Greek themes in mythology.
The earliest of these works is the ballet, Apollo. Or Apollon musagete. (1928) Craft seems to have had a complex relationship to the master, part family, part soul-mated colleague, and maybe part worshipper of the muses. He leads a deft and balanced reading of Apollo with the LSO. Do not let yourself be misled by the mainly diatonic, or major-key based, nature of this neo-classically fresh music. It is euphonius, and transcends its analytical means.
After visiting for a day with the composer, the Russian impresario Diaghilev wrote to a friend, "...it is, of course, an amazing work, extraordinarily calm and with greater clarity than anything he has done: filigree counterpoint around transparent, clear-cut themes, all in a major key, music not of this world, but from somewhere above ..."
Diaghilev got it, then, and so do Robert Craft and the players.
Second comes the latest of these 3 ballets, Agon. (1957) By this time the master was going serial, or twelve-tone, in his very own special way. He finished Agon close to his 75th birthday, and there is little or nothing quite like it in most of the published twelve-tone literature. Somehow, Stravinsky finds the intense economies that we associate with Webern while staying true to himself. There is no published scenario to Agon, as if the music were its own reason for being a ballet. The Orchestra of St. Luke's is smaller than the LSO, but no less musically gifted. Yet again, Robert Craft's leadership is astute, and he seems to have an ear no less incisive than Pierre Boulez when it comes to pitch, texture, and rhythm. What he offers that Pierre Boulez sometimes does not, at least as recorded, is a certain warmth and involvement, a certain sensory richness and physicality.
The last ballet on this disc is the one written in between Apollo and Agon: Orpheus (1946). The choice of subject originated with Georges Balanchine who was much taken with the Orpheus myth, but ballet stage designer Isamu Noguchi also deserves credit for bringing the work to life as dance, as scene, and as total art work. Stravinsky's genius was supported and nourished by the other two, and so we get a sort of return of the younger composer, all that much wiser for being able to embrace sensuality again after having survived two world wars and ending up settled amid the posturing glitz of Hollywood and southern California. Craft leads the LSO in another fine reading.
Apollo and Orpheus were caught in Abbey Road, U.K., and Agon in an auditorium at SUNY, Purchase. The sound matches the clarity, brilliance, and sensual heft of these three performances. Never flashy. No kitsch. But generous and scintillating, nonetheless.
Check out the whole Robert Craft series of recorded Stravinsky. This disc is just one among a string of finely matched pearls, waiting for the black velvet of your listening room's expectant quiet.
A Return to the Greeks a la Stravinsky.......2006-06-24
This marvelous CD presents three Stravinsky ballets that deal with Greek mythology and span Stravinsky's output from 1927 through 1957 allowing us to hear the manner in which Stravinsky continued to grow with the musical changes of the times (if not invent them!). The conductor is Robert Craft, Stravinsky's longtime colleague and promoter and in these recordings, each made originally on separate sessions, he conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Lukes, both ensembles having an affinity for these works.
'Apollon musagete, ballet in 2 scenes for string orchestra' (1927) is probably the finest of his neoclassical period works for orchestra alone. It can be steely cool in other's hands, but here Craft draws an achingly beautiful sound from the London Symphony. It is meditative, serenely poignant and ethereal.
'Agon, ballet for twelve dancers & orchestra' (1957) is one of Stravinsky's twelve tone works that manages to go beyond the usual constrictions of that form to become an unusually melodic work. Craft and the Orchestra of St. Lukes offer a performance that gives all of the sixteen variations individual importance.
'Orpheus, ballet in 3 scenes for orchestra' (1947) concludes the recital with the admixture of both Stravinsky's neoclassicism with his early penchant for seething romantic melody lines. This is the work of the three that will find widest audience appeal for those not yet captivated with the Stravinsky 'cerebral works' and it makes a fine way to complete this exploration into Greek themes so cleverly programmed by the reconstructors of this first class CD. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, June 06
Absolute Caftsmanship.......2005-07-17
Robert Craft was one of Stravinkij's best friends and worked closely with him in several circumstaces over the course of the years until the composer died. Craft was almost like a borther for Stravinsky (he lived with the russian composer's family both in California and later in New York City, and shared with him many ideas and projects which eventually culminated in a artistic relationship. Crafts wrote the libretto for The Flood and became the major biogarpher and Stravinskij's scholar publishing several numbers of books and essays on Starvinsky's ouvres and asethetic.
In this recording Craft is actually the best interpreterof Starvinsky's ballet music. Before I listened to this extraordinary Naxos CD, I thought tha Ansermet went farther than anybody else did --even more than Stravinskij himself. Craft made me change my mind: when you listen to his intepretation of this music, you have the feeling that he is talking to his longstanding friend Igor while conducting his music.
This recording will mark a milestone in revealing the beauty of Stravibnskij's music. Buy it, you won't regret it!
Very good rendition.......2005-07-01
I am so glad to find all three of these ballets on one CD.
The performance is beautiful. I could find nothing wrong with the interpretation, and I can assure you I am quite picky.
Anyway, I highly recommend this CD.
Fine Performances of Three Fine Stravinsky Ballets.......2005-06-10
Whoever had the idea of putting these performances of three of Stravinsky's ballets based on classical Greek themes on the same CD should get a medal. They are plucked and combined from several Koch Classics releases of a few years ago. Naxos seems to be reissuing all of Robert Craft's Stravinsky performances from the Koch label, and that's good. Craft, who has an unwarranted reputation as a dry-as-dust conductor, actually puts quite a bit of juice in these lovely scores. Similar as they may be in thrust, these three scores are really quite different from each other. 'Apollo' (1927-28) is for strings alone and is quintessential neoclassicism. 'Orpheus' (1947), for full orchestra, mixes neoclassicism with old-fashioned lyrical romanticism; indeed it is Stravinsky's first work since 'Firebird' to use the marking 'espressivo.' 'Apollo' and 'Orpheus' are narrative ballets but 'Agon' (1957) is plotless. It is very nearly atonal and varies the orchestration for nearly all the sixteen variations; the full orchestra is never used for any of them. Yet, within a few notes anyone familiar with Stravinsky's sound will immediately identify the composer of any of these works. It's always seemed amazing to me that a twelve-tone work by Stravinsky still sounds like him.
In 'Apollo' (or 'Apollon musagète' as it is called in French) all violence and abrasiveness (as one might expect from the composer of 'The Rite of Spring') are eschewed. Rather the work coolly and lyrically limns the birth and life of Apollo in music that is like some 18th-century court ballet filtered through 19th-century French ballet composers like Adam and Delibes. Delicious. And deliciously performed here by the London Symphony under Craft.
'Orpheus' was commissioned by Lincoln Kirstein for George Balanchine who had suggested the subject. It was originally intended to be coupled with 'Apollo' in performance but in fact that did not happen at its première. Although narrative, it is intensely hieratic and uses neobaroque gestures including canon, other kinds of counterpoint, restless bass lines, ostinati and the like. It is more austere than 'Apollo' but lyrical nonetheless. It, too, is given a lovely, flexible, suave performance by the LSO.
'Agon' (Greek for 'contest') is essentially a dance contest before the gods. Not really quite atonal, but making use of a 12-tone row, it combines Renaissance dances (including a galliard in C major with a canon featuring harp and mandolin), coupled with what Stephen Walsh in Grove's calls 'high-speed stream-of-consciousness chromaticism.' Its première was conducted by Robert Craft, and here, conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke's, he leads a fast-moving performance that occasionally gets a little out of breath, but is energetic and energizing for all that.
There have been other recordings of these works, including those conducted by Stravinsky himself, but these are satisfying and in modern sound.
Recommended.

A Wonderful Bit of Nostalgia........2007-05-14
I purchased thia CD for one song "Runaway Train" and whenever I am having a bad day I enjoy listening to it to put things in there proper perspective! The other titles are very good if you are in the right mood to listen to them...
Dave Pirner fans...........2007-01-10
This album is really good. I recomend it to any Soul Asylum fan. But some one who is not, I dont think they would like it to much. However I really enjoyed this album.
Rediscovered treasure........2006-09-11
Like another reviewer, I replaced my long lost copy of GDU after I bought their newest release, The Silver Lining. The new disk reminded me that I had liked them in the 90's, and replaying Grave Dancers reminded me why. This is literally the only cd I own that I don't even think about the skip button for. I can put it in and listen to every track with complete enjoyment. There's not a bad song in the bunch. The radio hits are of course eminently user friendly, the deep cuts rock, and reveal a lot of the strangeness that's part and parcel of Soul Asylum, their personality if you will. The only downside that I have ever been able to find to this release is that Pirners vocals are weird. He's known for being erratic..sometimes on key, sometimes off, always raspy...and that's fine. That's Dave Pirner. But the vocals on this disk are high pitched and whiny, and frequently make me wince. They're really nowhere near as strong or aggressive as they are on all of their other disks..including the newest release. But if the pitch of the vocals is the only drawback, big deal. I'd tell anyone who had never heard Soul Asylum to grab this disk. It'll win them over.
Great Songwriter's album.......2006-07-12
I was brought back to this album after hearing Soul Asylum's latest release, Silver Lining.
I forgot how truly good this album is. The songwriting is outstanding. Dave's voice is not always in tune, but it adds so much character and emotion that it can't be dismissed.
So many incredible songs on this album. "Runaway Train", "Black Gold", "Somebody to Shove", and "Without a Trace were all FM sweethearts. But there were many other gems on this album. "Keep it up" is a great upbeat pop song. While "Homesick" isn't a favorite of mine, it did well on the charts. "Get on Out" is a cool rocker. To me, "New World" is simply filler". "April Fool" may be my favorite song on the album, it has a harder rock groove, and some great phrasing. The rest were fillers as well to me.
Four big commercial hits, and some hidden gems. Listen to amazon's samples and it might be for you. A big step up from their previous six albums (although I am a fan of those as well).
A must have for Aficionados of 90's music.......2006-07-04
If you are to dance on the grave, join the union! I forgot how much I loved this album until I replaced it!

While critics at the 1971 premiere found the work derivative and even tasteless, audiences loved this ardent, resourceful, somewhat brazen, ultimately moving Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers. Leonard Bernstein's affinity for his public and for the age in which he lived enabled him to successfully outfit his Mass with a stylish mix of contemporary and ancient modes--rock, jazz, electronic music, Gregorian chant--and place it in a context somewhere between Broadway and opera. Though it lacks the visual component of a live performance, the work holds up well on this Bernstein-led recording, the only complete version on disc. From the popular "Simple Song" to the Stravinskian rhythmic devices and abundant, memorable melodies, the vital creative force of Bernstein is never absent. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-05-24
An excellent cd sung in english with a libretto to guide you. This two cd set is very much worth owning and is conducted by the composer. It is not like the usual mass in that it employs two orchestras, singers, dancers and two choruses.
An embarrassment.......2007-05-17
This is one of the biggest embarrassments of Bernstein's career. In the late 60s/early 70s, everyone was trying to make Catholicism "hip and cool and relevant" in an attempt to appeal to the youth culture of that time. That's why we have time pieces like Jesus Christ Superstar and songs like "Put Your Hand in the Hand" -- a song which would fit nicely here, by the way, so you get the picture. The fact that Bernstein is Jewish, and therefore non-Catholic, didn't seem to deter or bother anyone involved in this ridiculous project. With its dippy-hippy lyrics ("God said it's good to be poor") and mindnumbingly dumb "theological" reflections ("I believe in one God, but I believe in three" huh?) this "mass" is hopelessly dated. This, after all, is a theater piece, not a liturgical mass in the great tradition of Catholic composers such as Beethoven Bruckner and Mozart. As it tries so hard to fit into the youth culture of the early 70's, it ultimately rests there and never transcends into anything musically interesting, spiritually uplifiting, or spiritually challenging. Strong point: "A Simple Song" which is, a simples song from the Psalms sung by Alan Titus without -- mercifully -- any cynical interpolations. Otherwise, file this with the Godspell movie soundtrack.
An interesting approach to the Christian faith..........2007-04-28
Even though I always considered L. Bernstien to be my favorite conductor, it took me a long time to like his "Mass". I would listen to it every year or two and gradually it grew on me. Though Bernstien's music is unmistakable, he draws on Mahler, Stravinsky, Ives, Copland and Gershwin. This piece reveals musical genius and also presents an interesting approach to the Christian faith.
P.S. Bernstien also wrote a symphony called "Kaddish" which is based on Jewish prayers. Like Gustav Mahler, Bernstien must have been quite a seeker and we are to benefit from his variety of religious experiences.
Albert Batarse.......2005-07-22
A Bernstein classic. You feel like singing it
over and over and never get tired of it.
An excellent musical way to communicate with God.
You've got to listen in surround..........2005-04-01
If you have have a home theater system with very good speakers, listen to this CD in surround. Leonard Bernstein conceived the music in quad, using the space intelligently, and it still holds up.
Hats off to original recording engineer Don Puluse (quad was bleeding edge back then) and to CD remixing engineer John McClure.

HALF GREAT AND HALF NOT SO HOT.......2005-01-22
A FEW OF THE SONGS ARE GREAT, BUT I WAS TURNED OFF WITH SO MANY RAP TYPE SOUNDS THAT SOUND THE SAME, OVER AND OVER. THE WORST WAS THE HEAVY BREATHING AND MOANING SONG--WOULDN'T HE RATHER HEAR YOU? WE DON'T NEED THREE OF US. THE MOANING IS A DISTRACTION FROM THE MUSIC--HOW DO YOU DANCE TO MOANING?
You call this strip club music?.......2004-02-13
Only 2 maybe 3 songs on this cd qualifies as strip club music. "B*Tch, Shake that A**" from dj Boss Pimp is REAL strip club music, this ain't.
Awww yeahhh..........2001-05-12
This is a great compilation by all the original artists. It's great to find all these songs in one place...definetly a party favorite.
Music that makes you feel "sexy-funky"........1999-01-27
When I first brought this CD into the office, everybody thought I was nuts. After just one listen, it became everyone's favorite. The music is sexy, funny, and funky. It is traditional in the office that we play this CD in the late afternoon when everyone's tired and needs a little pep. Everyone sings along to "Superfreak", "Brick House", and "Strokin'".
When I bought "Strip Jointz 2", all the guys went crazy! That is now the office's second favorite CD. These CDs are highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Fun, Sexy Music.......2005-12-06
I orginally bought this CD as a "jab" Christmas gift for my philandering ex husband; unfortunately, he liked it. His comment? "I never heard any of THESE songs in a strip bar; if I HAD, I would have gone more often!" Ha Ha! But really, this is a fun collection of songs that are really hard to find anywhere else; after all, do you want to own a WHOLE CD of the DeVinyls just to hear "I Touch Myself"? Break out the pole and have fun with it!
Fun and Sexy.......2003-03-02
I couldn't resist this album, especially when I saw I Touch Myself on there. There were a few songs I wasn't that familiar with, but overall, the songs are a lot of fun.
RIGHT OFF THE STAGE (W/THE GIRLS!!!!).......2002-07-18
This from someone who has used quite a few of the songs on stage when she used to dance. It's great and easy for you dj to use just 3 cds to get most of your music. It is a must have collection to have all three strip jointz cds. Everyday music that IS "sexy"
Funny concept, great album.......2001-07-31
I saw this in the record store and had to stop and look at it. You've got to be kidding me, right? An album of strip club rock hits? Then I turned it over and read what was on it. Well, sure enough, they were all sexy songs but ... this was a really good compilation album.
It's been played more or less constantly since I've picked it up a few days ago. For rockers (or just would-be rockers) with a sense of humor, this is definitely worth picking up.
(And, frankly, more embarassing than having an album of strip club tunes is the fact that I now own some Motley Crue ... ack!)
Fun cd.......1999-06-23
This collection of songs is a lot of fun. I'd never heard the Motorhead song on here before, and I have to say that it smokes.

Album Description
This is the debut album from the sultry and ever swinging Ms. Wilde and her Jumpin' Jubilee Orchestra, a sweet blend of 16 world-class musicians who specialize in the raw, earthy big-band rythmn & blues of the 40's and 50's. This is music from the special time before strict boundaries were drawn between jazz, blues and r&b. Combining the drive of swing and jump-blues, the hot soloing of jazz, and the sublime vocal stylings of Lily Wilde, the Jumpin' Jubilee Orchestra appeals to dancers, listeners and all fans of timeless music played by great musicians.
Customer Reviews:
Take me back to the forties!.......2006-12-29
Lily Wilde and the orchestra have obviously been listening to a lot of Buddy and Ella Johnson over the years. They have their horn driven r&b sound down! Lily even sounds a bit like Ella on occasion. The band stomps and swings while Lily's voice floats over the swinging rhythm section. Songs like "Mr. 5x5", the old tune about Jimmy Rushing and "work baby" by Louis Jordan sound like they were written by her. Great musicianship, great arrangements. Great record. Wish I could see them live!
Rockin' Horns!.......2006-12-14
From the first note of the first track, you know that you are in for a swingin' ride. The charts are great, and the musicians are top-drawer. If you're a horn player....you're going to be jealous that you weren't selected for this recording session!
Lovely lady, lovely music!.......2005-08-10
If you like swing, this here's the thing. Fans of Lavay Smith will be pleased with what they hear. I have been a fan of Lily's for a while before I purchased her CD. I haven't been sorry since. Wonderful music with a lot of energy. I just wish she would play the east coast more often.
Lily Wilde swings!!!.......2005-05-06
This is a wonderful cd. Great arrangements played by a fine orchestra, and of course, the vocals by Ms. Wilde are as good as it gets. The only complaint I have is that this is her only recorded work that I can find. It's that good.
Great jazz and blues big band swing!.......2004-02-13
This CD is one of those sneaky surprises waiting out there in the swing music scene. Striking out from Portland, OR, Lily Wilde has produced a phenomenal album of big band swing, perfect for listening and dancing. Backed by the full Jumpin' Jubilee Orchestra, Lily Wilde lays out a series of tracks that capture the swingin' feeling of the big bands of the 1950s, like Billy May and Count Basie. It's jazzy swing with the soul of the blues...in other words, the genuine swing article, not some rock band that just stuck on a few horns and called themselves a swing band. Lily Wilde knows her musical history and knows what she likes, and that means you're guaranteed to like it as well.
Lily Wilde's voice is supremely soulful and powerful, reminding a bit of Ella Fitzgerald and Helen Humes (one of Count Basie's best female singers), but separate enough to have her own identity. She does a great job with such swingin' classics as "Mister Five by Five," "Work Baby Work," and "Oh Babe!" (my personal favorite cut from the album). These all swing smooth and very danceable, and should get a whole room of picky swing dancers jivin' and wailin'. I also enjoy the humorous "Rip Van Winkle." Lily slows it down and gets soulful and torchy on "Since I Fell for You," (the best slow number on the album) and a beautiful version of "Stormy Weather."
The band itself swings hard in a very Basie-like style, sounding like the legendary "Atomic" band from the 50s. This is most noticeable on a stand-out, mid-tempo instrumental, "Go Ahead and Rock." It's an infectious piece.
The only flaw in the album is the one bad track among the bunch, and ironically, it's the title track, "Insect Ball." The band swings fine, but the electronic manipulation of the voices and the silly lyrics cripple it. Unfortunate -- but how often do you come across an album where every track is great?
This still counts as a five-star swing recording for me. Swing fans who haven't heard Lily Wilde need to get their hands on this gem while it is still around. It's guaranteed to get you dancing again after you've worn out all your "Swing Session" albums.

This ain't real strip club music!.......2004-02-13
Man, this ain't no real strip club music! The only song on here that is worth the cd's price is K7's song, and that ain't even strip club music either! If you want to hear REAL strip club music, buy a DJ Boss Pimp or 2 Live Crew cd and call it a day.
Hard to find songs in one place........1999-02-02
As a mobile D.J., I've found the "Strip Jointz" series of compilations very helpful (my wife doesn't appreciate the cover art or the concept, but...). If you're a fan of R & B or rap music, these include some very hard to find selections all on one CD. I bought this one for "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix A Lot, "Dazzey Dukes" by Duice and "Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James. Great to throw on as background at a party, too!

Dance The Night Away.......2005-12-31
Snuggle up close to your sweetie for dream-dancing to this "two-fer" CD. Sparkling arrangements turn each song into a new memory. 'I Hadn't Anyone Till You', 'Out Of Nowhere', and 'I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)' get my honey and I up off our seats, and out onto the instant dance floor of our living room, every time!
Even if you can only dream, as you nod your head to another time and another place, this CD is worth the price of admission. Buy it for your Grandparents, or your parents, and make sure you buy another copy for yourself!
Hard to find cd.......2005-09-18
Took 3 weeks for this item to arrive. I think too long.
The Dream World of Postwar Ballroom Dancing, Reborn.......2004-10-12
Ray Anthony took the clarinet-octave-lead-over-the-saxes sound from Glenn Miller's civilian band, added strings like Major Miller did in his AAF band, and, with his arrangers (including Don Simpson), made it all more hi-fi and even sweeter for dancing pleasure. And it IS pleasure: sensual, indulgent, maybe even "escapist," but in perfectly disciplined STYLE...If the ending of "Embraceable You" (Track 18) doesn't strike you as the PRETTIEST combo of big-band woodwinds and soft brass,
run-don't-walk to the nearest audiologist.
Now sure, as a trumpet player, Ray Anthony wasn't Harry James (who else WAS for Godssakes?), but what he HAD he sure could USE...No, this isn't "jazz," it's scintillatingly-arranged commercial big-band-and-strings, with jazz inflection...But taken on its own terms this disc is an unabashed pleasure from start to finish.
DREAM DANCING is the more famous of the two LPs resurrected here, and it's a jewel.
Still, the earlier LP, DANCERS IN LOVE (1957 ? ), is one of those sweetly, pungently recorded Capitol albums of the late mono era: everything is perfectly focused, and if it's possible, "better than stereo."
If you can't recreate a big-band ballroom or install a revolving mirror-ball in your own abode, then at least have a few old friends over to your patio, porch or deck; serve some hors d'ouevres, light some lanterns, pop open some bubbly, and play tracks 1 thru 12...By the time "Blue Champagne" is over, you'll think you see Marilyn, in that green & white-print summer dress she wore in SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE, smiling at you from the edge of the patio..."Sure, why not, you silly old thing."

Great singing.......2006-03-01
Roberta Alexander is stunning in these songs of Bernstein. Her voice simply shimmers. Really beautiful.
Only Roberta.......2003-12-02
Roberta Alexander is right on top of this recording. She has a beautiful and strong voice, but more importantly, she has perfect command of the music and idiom of these and Ives' songs. The emotional range of the songs is very wide, ranging from playful to thoughtful to sorrowful but she makes all of them sound very natural.
The Five Kid Songs express the imagination of a small child (Jupiter has seven moons, or is it nine? Saturn has a million billion trillion sixty-nine) and it would be very easy to perform them in a childish way, talking down as many adults do - the composer expressly stated that they should not be performed this way and in fact Alexander sings them with a perfectly natural innocence. La Bonne Cuisine is sung with a strong drive, and although it's hard to imagine what anyone should do with excerpts from a cooking book it's still compelling music. The other songs are also nice but not as memorable - as for the songs from Candide, they are beautiful but get the complete recording on Deutsche Grammophon, directed by Bernstein himself (there are two; I prefer the live version, ASIN B000001GD2).
Tan Crone does more than just provide a background; she adds her own interpretation on piano to add even more feeling to the music.
Bernstein's songs do not have the depth of Ives', but this is still a very nice collection. I will have to check out the Barber and Copland recordings on the same label as well.
