About the Artist
Remarking on his last frigidisk release, A Splendid Tray, Tania Biswas of Spin.com said, "this man is a brilliant storyteller with all the vivid efficacy of a well-read, eccentric, solitary treehugger on acid." Pure Pop labeled him ""...a powerhouse talent that will continue to make a mark on the pop scene for many years to come." A Splendid Tray was also nominated for a Sacramento Area Music Award (SAMMIE).

Anton's previous releases include Antology, Vol. 1 (1999), Waterbugs and Beetles (1995) and The Horse's Tongue (1993), and his song, "Octagon", was featured on the Yellow Pills Vol. 4 anthology, alongside contributions by the Plimsouls, Jason Faulkner and the Loud Family. Anton's version of "Saturday Night" was featured on the 2000 Bay City Rollers tribute album, Men in Plaid.

17th Century Fuzzbox Blues is the fifth CD from Sacramento, CA native Anton Barbeau, and it will delight fans with its stripped-down, spontaneous sound. Bass legend Larry Tagg and Deathray's James Neil are part of Barbeau's studio crew this time around, and once again pop legend Scott Miller lends a hand with production.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not going to use the word "quirky.".......2000-10-26

I suspect that puts me in an elite crowd amongst people describing Anton Barbeau.

If there were partial stars, I'd have rated this a just a hair lower - simply because Barbeau's last release, "A Splendid Tray," was a 5-star record for me in every way. This one, while it contains eight or nine perfect songs and a few more that are very good or at least interesting, doesn't have quite the same flow - doesn't hang together quite as beautifully.

Still and all, eight or nine perfect songs is more than one can reasonably ask from any single CD - and from the Scott Miller-produced rocker "Little Daisy" to the utterly devastating "Another Stoned Piano" to the album's closer, "Lara Brushing Her Hair In LA" - which puts Barbeau among the handful of songwriters who can write about simple, blissful contentment without sounding sappy - "17th Century Fuzzbox Blues" delivers 'em.

4 out of 5 stars Thrilling!.......2000-09-29

I'm thrilled to be the first to write a review for this album and was thrilled to be one of the first to buy the album. On first listen I liked it less than any of his other albums, which I love, but with repeated listening I know have a greater respect for this album. If you like good music that is different you'll like this album. though not as easilly accessable as past efforts(or maybe I just wasn't in the rigfht mood that first time) I think even folks who like the easy simple music will like this album. There is something for everyone here.

"How can you review the CD if you haven't HEARD it yet?" my wife Blake asked.

"Hey, are you gonna argue about DETAILS like that? Anton said he'd give us fifty bucks. Or someone would," I replied.

This CD, like most of Anton's work, is undoubtedly eccentric (notice I didn't say "quirky") pop at its best. I expect that Anton pumps out one well-crafted song after another, proving that both musically and lyrically he still has a lot to offer. My first impression of the CD was, "Man, that's one green cover." But, since you really can't judge a CD by its cover, I suggest that everyone buy this puppy and listen to the tunes. That's what I'm gonna do.
