Best Freakin Clutch Album EVER!!!.......2007-04-01
How could you not love this one? A Shogun Named Marcus - totally rocks. El Jefe... Binge and Purge... Effigy... Rats!!! If I could own one album, this would have to be it.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time! If you don't have this album, you need it!
What A Badass Band. .......2006-02-28
Clutch jams, their heavy, and they have a killer front man. This was my 1st intro to Clutch. Every song on here is unlike any you've heard before; I don't think anyone sounds like Clutch. You want the kind of band that's funny as well as serious at the same time, able to deliver their songs with ultimate heaviness while still proving their musical abilities? There you have it. Get on this band now! For any fans of bands that you can party to as well as get into in a serious way. I can't name any other bands that are kind of like Cluch because I don't think anyone sounds like them. Easy 5 star rating here.
Necrosoul.
The first record by the almighty Clutch.......2006-02-25
Was expecting better but was not bad. A bit more raw than much of their other stuff.
I'm not saying rock is dead........2005-12-31
I'm really not.
But how many CDs have come out in the last 10 years that can compete with, "Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes & Undeniable Truths?" How many CDs have this much voracity and groove?
Rock is a retired word. Bands like Audioslave are not rock, they are heavy lounge music. Bands like the White Stripes are not pioneers; they are recyclers with bursts of innovation. I'm not saying Audioslave and the White Stripes are bad, but neither band has a song that rocks like El Jefe Speaks. Or an album that opens up at 90 mils per hour with A Shogun Named Marcus.
There are so many good songs on this album. There are so many good songs on all of Clutch's albums. Clutch is one of those love or hate bands, more love than hate. This is one of Clutch's earlier albums, a little less groove, and a little more rock. I'm not saying that the band doesn't lay down the smooth bassline, and let the song unfold around it, because that certainly does happen (Binge And Purge). Clutch has a healthy amount of musical variety on this album, actually. The first 3 songs, sequentially, are perfect. If those 3 songs were on an EP I would be content.
The whole album is pretty groove-laden. It's just not the same groove that you will find on Robot Hives:Exodus or Blast Tyrant. That's not a bad thing though. Sure, Clutch has warped their sound a bit, but stylistically, they're a similar band today 10 years ago.
That said, "Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes & Undeniable Truths," is a wee-bit heavier than the bands later works. So, if you're expecting keyboards, or vocals that can groove like the bass, you might not want to look here. If you're looking to rock, no-BS, I promise you this album rocks. Sure, it's a tad bit on the heavy side, but it's less punk than COC and almost as groovey as Black Sabbath.

Todd Snider really knows how to work a room. As a storytelling troubadour for the slacker set, he takes inspiration from the likes of Jerry Jeff Walker (as he explains in one of this solo concert album's deadpan introductions) and Robert Earl Keen and applies it to a selection of shaggy-dog stories, talking blues, and slices-of-life gone askew. One of his earliest signature tunes, "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues," has now outlived grunge by too long, but the more recent "Waco Moon," inspired by the death of guitartist Eddy Shaver, shows that Snider's songwriting is good for a whole lot more than laughs. Some of his most engaging songs such as "Beer Run" seem to have practically written themselves, while others such as "Tension" and "Statistician's Blues" sound like songs that were just waiting to be written. It's an integral part of Snider's engaging appeal that he makes it all seem so effortless. As with Keen, the challenge for Snider is balancing the easy laughs with his more serious progression as a songwriter. --Don McLeese

Amazing Quality! Powerful Performances! PERFECTION!.......2007-04-02
It wasn't until I decided to download free music by Todd Snider that I realized I needed to buy every album he has ever made. Little by little I discover a near missed opportunity - now found. Near Truths is the place to start a TS collection. When I first heard this I wondered where the heck have I been all these years? How did these few artists get overlooked during that time? I guess the ninties was my version of the sixties. This guy exemplifies what yesterday is today. The real "new breed" of America. Not many ever "get it" but this one does.

Todd Snider is THE BEST singer-songwriter out there. He combination of sad, funny, and introspective songs puts him in a league by himself. Most hard core fans like myself are glad for a live album, but in the end, it makes you a fan of ALL his albums. The is a great overview of Todd, but in the end, all his albums are great.

What's still surprising about this trio is their unquenchable thirst for fresh inspiration, which they find here in songs by Bob Marley, Hank Williams, and Townes Van Zandt among others. And, after 25 years together, guitarist Wendell Holmes, his bassist brother Sherman, and drummer Popsy Dixon still have the unique ability to transform their sources, which explains why Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" crunches with garage-band raunchiness and Marley's "Concrete Jungle" unfolds as a folk-blues spiritual. But original tunes like the Chuck Berry-style stomper "Run Myself Out of Town" and the gentle ballad "We Meet, We Part, We Remember" prove they needn't look further than their own songwriting for great numbers that play to their long-developed strengths: gentle and soaring three-part harmonies, respect for economical grooves, and virtuosic guitar melodies. It all serves to further their distinctive blend of the roadhouse and God's house. --Ted Drozdowski
Album Description
The Holmes Brothers return with SIMPLE TRUTHS, helmed by the same Grammy-winning pairproducer Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Chris Whitley) and engineer S. Husky Höskulds (Tom Waits, Joe Henry, Wallflowers)who were part of the creative team for the 2003 Norah Jones smash Come Away With Me. SIMPLE TRUTHS features 13 striking songs reflecting The Holmes Brothers' wide-ranging musical palette. The CD brings the group back into the secular world while still holding tight to their rich gospel harmonies and rough-edged vocals. The album features an amazing collection of songs written by some of the greatest songwriters of the last 60 years, including Townes Van Zandt (If I Needed You), Bob Marley (Concrete Jungle), Gillian Welch (Everything Is Free), Willie Nelson (Opportunity To Cry) and Hank Williams (I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry) as well as choice covers of Collective Soul's Shine and Bruce Channel's Hey Baby. The Holmes Brothers' spirited original material (Run ! Myself Out Of Town; We Meet, We Part, We Remember; You Won't Be Livin' Here Anymore; and I'm So Lonely) fits perfectly alongside the rest of the songs on this transcendent, boundary-defying release.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic album!.......2006-01-31
We first heard of the Holmes Brothers by watching one of Willie's shows, Angels and Outlaws. What wonderful music the Holmes Brothers produce. We have sent this album to many of our friends and they have all enjoyed it as much as we have. We wish them continued success!
Heavenly Singin.......2004-09-16
Simple Truths is a stripped down record rooted in Harlem blues with touches of gospel, country and folk music scattered throughout. Great harmonies punctuate these songs especially on the touching We Meet, We Part, We Remember. They turn If i Needed You into a spiritual experience, the kind where you kick back, close your eyes, and drink a budweiser to. Bob Marley's surely nodding his head in approval in heaven when he listens to their soulful version of Concrete Jungle. Popsy Dixon's singin on Gillian Welch's Everything is Free is sublime. Good stuff.
Simply boring!.......2004-07-14
I read the reviews on this CD and based on them, purchased it. It's one of, if not the most, diappointing purchases I've made on Amazon. The production and performance quality are both marginal. I've tried to listen to the CD multiple times and can't get through it. I enjoy all types of music, but primarily listen to Blues, this CD made me blue.
'nuff sed.......2004-06-02
Saw them at the Strawberry Music Festival and...WOW! Their live performance was excellent, the next morning's gospel "workshop" sublime! The album, while testimony in itself to the quality of this band, only begins to showcase the harmonies, the musicianship, the soul of this trio. Not a skippable song among them.
Next best thing to live..........2004-04-08
You can get this cd if the HBs aren't coming to your town, or to remember how great there were when they DID come, but don't miss them live if you can make it: More great sound comes out of this trio than you could ever believe,(if your eyes were closed).

In their inimitable 1958 Wayne touring bus, stuffed with flea-market couches and a propane stove, Fred Eaglesmith and the Flying Squirrels have spent the last decade descending from Canada to play any venue that will have them. These two discs generously capture the fury and fun of their live gigs, despite the track fade-outs and the absence of Eaglesmith's hilarious between-song storytelling. The set includes the previously unrecorded (for good reason) novelty tunes "White Trash," "Big Hair," and "How's Ernie?" yet another car song "Benchseat Baby," but also "John Deere" and "Carmelita," rare gems that stand with the best of Eaglesmith's working-class portraits. He growls and snarls through every line, while his cohorts--including human salvage yard Washboard Hank, distortion-pedal-loving mandolinist Willie P. Bennett, and harmony vocalist and bassist Ralph Schipper (whose last show the set documents)--rock like punks on a mission. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
a good'un.......2002-05-21
Just what you probably think you don't need--yet another two-disc thematic song suite on an indie label. "Ralph's Last Show" (named for the bandmate whose green card has since expired) sounds like the worst sort of treacle in theory--songs about trains, old cars, old loves, even, so help me, one about an old dog. In reality these are beautifully observed, sometimes sweet, often hilarious songs written by a journeyman Canadian folkie whose voice has just the right amount of road- (if not world-)weariness in it. All that and an Appalachian murder ballad that sounds more authentic than anything Gillian Welch has come up with. Docked a notch only for spreading two 40 min. sets across two cds when both would've easily fit on one.
Torn between 4 and 5 stars........2001-09-09
FOUR car songs, three train songs, a tractor song, and a bunch of awesome non-machinery songs too... I'd label it country/folk with an edge, with tons of fiddling in the background. Unless you hate that kind of music, what's not to like?
Well, it comes in a cardboard sleeve with no lyric sheets, and parts of it wouldn't play in my finicky old CD player, probably because the CDs got a little warped in transit because of the cheesy packaging. (The lyrics are pretty clear in the songs, so not having a lyric sheet isn't a crisis. The songs I could play on the old player were good enough to justify purchasing a new CD/DVD player the day after I got the CD, which plays both disks just fine.) "Flowers in the Dell" is a little creepy. And after a while the album's overall vocal and musical roughness got on my nerves, so I had to play something else for a bit.
Still, it's an amazing album, too good to knock down a whole star. But if 4.5 was an option, it'd be that.

He's a pretty good guy.. with a great cd.......2001-08-30
I've seen quite a few live Fred shows, and this cd captures the band at its musical peak. Included are some very new songs, some standards, and some revived classics. The best news is that you can really hear Washboard Hank, who's been a major force in the live shows but sadly missing from the recordings. Pay close attention to Hank's excellent dobro work!
On the down side, the cd doesn't include the between-songs stories, quips, and banter that make a Fred Eaglesmith show a truly a wonderful experience.
TOP TEN FOR YEAR 2001.......2001-06-19
This is cd is more acoustic than his last cd's, you'll have to go back to "Paradise Motel" for the same feeling. The cd is full of raw energy, and Eaglesmith as always is amazing. It's his best cd (from the ones I've heard) and one of the best cd's this year.
Amazing!
Just one problem, at close to 82 minutes it's too short for 2 cd's, it could have fit into one (- some applause and maybe one track less). It's yr money so you better know it before you order.

Only the first three songs are excellent!.......2001-06-24
I was introduced to Fretblanket in November 1997 when their video for "Into the Ocean" premiered on an MTV program named 12 Angry Viewers. I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the video, as did the panelists on the show, who voted it Best Video for that week ---thus giving it a little extra air time. In fact, I know a couple of people who are puzzled as to why MTV didn't nominate "Into the Ocean" for any video awards. (The very first purchase I made on the internet was a copy of Fretblanket's video ---a colorful sort-of 60's Euro-spy piece.) This is LITERALLY my favorite video ever.
When the album was finally available, I was thrilled. And my hopes weren't dashed, until "Supercool" went off. The rest of the album was dull, sluggish filler. Nonetheless, I am very happy with Home Truths From Abroad due to the strength of "Into the Ocean", "Supercool", and "Why Can't I Sleep". (I would describe these three tracks as late 90's surfer music, but NOT anything like The Beach Boys.)
Maybe I'll give the rest of this album a try when I feel like experimenting; but even if I never do, Fretblanket will remain one of my favorite alternative-pop bands of the late 90's.
(Hardcore fans of Fretblanket should pick up Summercamp's album "Pure Juice"; they have a similar musical style.)
Fretblanket matures on "Home Truths From Abroad&qu.......2000-08-17
Score another victory for the English 4 piece Fretblanket. These guys, (who were only 17 when they released their debut album "Junkfuel") have definitely come of age on "Home Truths From Abroad." If catchy, modern guitar driven rock is your thing, you should definitely pick this one up. Vocalist Wil Copely and lead guitarist Clive Powell, both show amazing prowess in their craft, and I can honestly say that as a band, you would be hard pressed to find a better group of songwriters. ~ From the opening notes of the upbeat "Into the Ocean," until the last notes of the far too short "Me & the Stars," Fretblanket will grab you hook, line, and sinker. If you like this one, I definitely recommend their first CD "Junkfuel," which is my absolute favorite CD of all time. Give these guys a listen, you'll thank yourself. Where are they now? If anyone can tell me, please drop me a line at thehazer75@hotmail.com...
Great CD, too bad they haven't gotten the notice they deserv.......2000-07-02
I picked this up for the single Into The Ocean cuz I couldn't find it on MP3 and was amazed at how good this album is - I even bought their prior release. At 1st I just listened to that song (#1) but sometimes I could not get to my Cd player to change it or forgot after that song was over and soon I thought 4 was a great song. Then 5. Then 9. Then the whole CD when I actually listened too it. Great range from acoustic (Killer, Stars) to rock-out (Hammer, Supercool) to everything in between (Sleep). I have my CDs in an album in order from best to worst and this CD is in the #1 spot. Example of hugely overlooked yet extremely talented band. Highly recommended!
Good album ..........2000-05-10
These guys have an earlier album called Junkfuel that is 1000 times better than this budget bin material. Nice example of a Jeckyl and Hyde transformation from one album to the next. Unless you're the Fonze, you're going to realize this album stinks worse than the food at Al's. I am the robot king.

Gordy Quist's debut album takes a leisurely approach and has a comfortable demeanor for his original Texas-based Americana music where the message is paramount. With a likeable voice and laid-back style, singer-songwriter Quist is sure to build a devoted following as long as he lets the songs play him and he's able to tap his inner muse. Quist finds most of his inspiration from people he's met and lessons learned through life and love. His "Ballad of Gordy Quist" starts a few generations back, tells his grandfather's story about loving the land, laying down seed, working hard, facing life's trials, and knowing right from wrong.
Most songs adopt rawboned and lean arrangements that allow his pleasant folkish delivery to take center stage. "Silver Wings," for example, offers guitar and harmonica to accompany his lead vocals on a tale of a man who "rode his dreams hard `til they couldn't take more." Co-producer Jack Saunders plays bass, baritone guitar, and sings harmonies. Jamie Griffin also sings harmonies. Other instrumental support comes from Damien Roomets (dobro), Rick Richards (percussion), Kym Warner (mandolin), Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle), and Allen Huff (accordion).
Quist grew up outside of Houston, Tx, and formed a rock/funk band called "Lucky Southern" while playing football at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. The electric guitar was sold to fund a backpack trip through Europe, and Quist then returned to Houston. He often shares the stage with Eric Taylor, Guy Clark, Paul Thorn, Caroline Herring, Sidehill Gougers and others. With his acoustic sensibilities, he's a welcome addition to the Texas music movement. Townes Van Zandt would have been proud of him. (Joe Ross, staff writer for Bluegrass Now, Roseburg, Oregon)

Customer Reviews:
Philip Glass CD.......2007-04-05
The service I received on this order was excellent. I was stunned at how quickly the package arrived.
The CD itself I don't much care for. That having been said, please understand I am not a big fan of New Age music. I bought the CD because a drum and bugle corps called Phantom Regiment is performing material from it in their field show this summer. I am very curious to see what the staff gleaned from this.
Great fun!.......2007-03-19
This is incidental music to a play, so it's all wordless [the voice of Linda Ronstadt being used as an instrument] and contained. It's Glass' take on a classic sci-fi score...his version of the original Star Trek theme. [that's why the electric keyboard sound...which is not "cheesy" but essential to the scale and mood of the piece] Sometimes dreamy, sometime frantic, it is full of invention and mood.
Great for driving!!
Know before you buy!.......2005-08-04
This is not typical Glass music, I do not believe. The emphasis of the opera as well as the music is to create an impression of the incredible and amazing, not so much to create a landscape and gaze at it, as Philip Glass music often does.
For someone who is new to Philip Glass' older works, this may be a gentle introduction. For more seasoned fans who do not know about the opera, you may want to do your homework first.
Did not like it.......2005-03-12
As a huge fan of early Philip Glass, I was anticipating wonderful things when I bought this album.
It disappointed me greatly, though. The organic tone of the Farfisa organs was gone, replaced by a very cheesy plastic dull sounding FM synthesis keyboard sound.
And the compositions seemed to be rehashes of the earlier Glass idioms.
I ended up getting rid of this album, after trying a few more times to get into it.
And that's pretty sad (compare to my favorite Glass albums -- including "Music in 12 Parts", "Einstein on the Beach", "North Star", "Akhnaten", "Satyagraha", "Dance Pieces", "The Photographer")
1000 Airplanes: A Spacy Opera.......2003-11-23
I wasn't sure what to think of this album after listening to it a couple of times. I found myself enamored with Track 10, however, a very fast, powerful, maddening tune, and felt the need to go back and re-evaluate the entire album. I found that the album is quick, very thematic, thought-provoking. In fact, I didn't know anything about the theme of the album, but as I listened, I felt I was on the brink of insanity. As it happens, a friend of mine mentioned that the opera is just that--about someone who is a bit whacked. This album is a top five of mine. It's a bit spacy, edgy, crazy. Linda Ronstadt's out-of-this-world vocals are awesome. If you like Philip Glass, you'll love this album!
