The Files You Have on Me

Editorial Reviews
–Alive and Kicking
Waterdown is filled with overtones of emo, the escapism of hardcore and the melodic elements of today’s punk rock.

Album Description
WATERDOWN is an amalgamation of throaty harsh screaming and some of the most euphonic vocal melodies you will ever hear. Their music provides an uplifting underscore that moves you both sonically and emotionally. Waterdown have played shows with the likes of JIMMY EAT WORLD, THURSDAY, SNAPCASE, AVAIL and GRADE over the last 3 years and show no signs of slowing down. Their newest release, "The Files You Have On Me", provides warm, singy vocals fused with heavy screaming, double bass and is backed with tight leads and harmonic hooks. This record is a must-have for fans of newly successful bands like THE USED and FINCH. Waterdown present another angle and invention to emo, hardcore and to music overall.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good but nothing fantastic.......2005-02-25

When I got a Victory Records cd sampler with the purchase of a Thursday cd, I really liked the song Xerox on it. After listening to it several times, I decided to go get this cd. Now while it isn't the best out there, it is pretty good. To me there were a few too many songs that never really stood out to me or sounded too similar to one another. I like the vocals alot on here and its nice to have both styles on here, but it still doesn't help the fact that this band needs to improve a bit more for their next release.

5 out of 5 stars insane!.......2003-08-22

I got this cd like last month and all I can say is its so stinking amazing. 13 is the only song I don't care for, but then again its an outro so those are usually songs I skip anyways. So if you see this cd you should buy its because its amazing. Oh yeah and the song 'Nothing' is my favorite song, check it out if you can.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad........2003-05-18

A lot of you have been bitching lately that Victory Records has lost it's edge. With it's recent releases of bands like Snowdogs, the Reunion Show, and Count The Stars, as well as new signings like Spitalfield, a lot of you old hardcore kids who grew up on Snapcase and the like are feeling a little bit hung out to try. Well worry no longer, because Waterdown should soothe your stressed nerves while at the same time get you moshing in your computer chair.

Waterdown is a six-piece technical hardcore band hailing from over the Atlantic Ocean in Germany, to be exact, and their style [to my mostly virgin ears, by hardcore standards] seems to fall in between two former Victory bands - Boy Sets Fire and Thursday. Their sound is more focused and deliberate than that of Thursday's, and singers Marcel and Ingo are both better singers *and* screamers than anyone in that New Jersey outfit.

As for the Boy Sets Fire comparison, Waterdown's breakdowns seem to draw parallels to the moshing parts in slower BSF songs. Lyrically the band doesn't even come close to Nathan Gray's political poetry, but for a bunch of Germans writing and singing in English, it certaintly isn't a poor effort.

The disc has some obvious standouts in the first few tracks, of which "A Fortress" and "Transient" have become my favorites. "Xerox" shows more of a Quicksand-esque posthardcore element being injected into the mix, but it gets stale by the fourth minute of the song. The band has a hard time escaping their own formula for the rest of the album, using up most of their tricks in the first dozen minutes or so. Still, there's definitely potential here, and for those hardcore purists who are waiting for Victory to return to form, this might just be the release to reaffirm your belief in the label.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive Screamo CD........2003-03-30

This cd combinds elements of punk ,emo and melodic hardcore. Musically they are similar to Boy Sets Fire or Finch. They combind melodic guitar riffs over powerful vocal harmonics that will make you sing for days. Most the songs are filled with hooks, especially during the chorus part of the songs.

Having two main vocalists sing in almost every song, back and forth is just incredible. One of the vocalists sounds simlar to the singer from grade. This guy does mainly all the yelling and the verses. The other singer, has a really good voice, and he sings melodically, over the melody driven by the two guitarests. The Drums + Bass are right on(very tight).

Highlights of the CD!

I have not yet listen to the whole cd, i skipped around it, and what i heard i really digged. The best song so far is TRACK #2, entilted "A Fortress"

4 out of 5 stars This cd is really good. Impressive.......2003-03-29

First of all, i would like to tell you what these guys sound like. Considering the music end of the cd, it is really melodic at times, especially for hardcore punk. The whole thing is not melodic, but has very catchy parts, especially the choruses. This cd has awesome sounding guitars. The Vocals (the melodic singer that is) is def. the highlights of this cd.

The music sounds something like a mix of boysetsfire and maybe finch. On the vocal side, there are 2 singers. One that mainly does all the yelling and hardcore singing. This dude sounds similar to the guy from Grade. The other vocalist is the one who melodically sings, i think he sings in all the songs. I cannot pick a voice who he sounds like, buts its really good.
