Payback [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
Suburaban Voice
. . .an ornery tangle of a sound somewhere between punk rock nastiness and the inbred grunge of Tad.

Punk Planet
If you like what Subpop once was get this CD and a big issue to shoot up into your ass.

Album Description
Take Moterhead, early Smashing Pumkins, and cut it with a hate and distrust. An album that matches the fury of their live show cord for cord. Has a cameo with Derwood Andrews of Gen X fame. A true watermark punk rock must rise to.

4 out of 5 stars Funky stuff.......2006-12-23

I like this double-album (now one one CD), though it's not as good as Hot Pants. Still, I've got a couple minor gripes: while the classic title song is pretty cool, it seems like he's trying to reinvent it on several cuts, bringing the wah-wah and orchestral ending back. Running times hurt the otherwise-good Take Some... Leave Some; Time Is Running Out Fast and Shoot Your Shot (the shortest song is 5:52, and the longest is 12:54 or so); and the ballad Doing the Best that I Can has JB doing a failed Curtis Mayfield impression, complete with falsetto and strings. But there are some great songs on this album: certainly the title song, plus the funky, tightly-wound jams that close the set: Stone to the Bone and Mind Power. Both run over ten minutes (the latter over twelve), but neither seem to drag: if anything, they're both too short.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible........2006-02-16

In my opinion, "The Payback" was recorded while The Godfather of Soul was in Supreme Musical Genius mode. James Brown's musical composition of 'Time is Running Out Fast' is incredible, not to mention the equally as incredible horn playing of Fred Wesley & Maceo Parker. 'Mind Power' is superbly conducted by The Godfather himself, demonstrating his musically infallible ear. The best James Brown Experience. A must own... What it is is what it is...

5 out of 5 stars atomic funk bomb Godfather style.......2003-01-21

I love this JB rules man and the payback is one of the most sampled songs in history and the rest of this cd has some funkdafied tracks on here special props goes to the jb's who are very underrated alongt with the legendary fred wesley, and maceo parker. ya'll keep the funk alive...

Polygram tells the JB story better than anyone yet with their series of two-CD James Brown reissues, which began with Soul Pride: The Instrumentals (1960-69), continued into the mid-1960s and onward with Foundations of Funk and this set, and then ventured into the 1980s with Dead On: The Heavy Funk. This triumphant, perfectly programmed two-disc package dredges 26 neglected gems and beloved jewels from the prolific predisco years, a time when Brown's powers were in sharp form. Waist-deep in fat freaky funk, pugilistic horn arrangements, looping modal grooves, and tuff blaxploitational kitsch--primo monster funk from the source. Fans of Parliament's nonstop party jam absolutely need this to know from whence their hardcore jollies came. --John Corbett

If anyone was making this music today it would be as fresh and hip as it was in the day. Timeless, classic, funk. There are single cuts on this collection worth the price of the cd. I own tons of James Brown, but did not have this until recently. If you appreciate some of the best music ever made on this planet then you must buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars JAMES COULDN'T MADE IT FUNKIER!.......2005-09-20

A few years before disco would rob pop music of it's soul, there were artists like Brother James dishing out hard and heavy grooves with a sense of urgency. Though this era from 1971-75 pales in comparison to his classic 60's hits to many, this CD proved that James was continuing to work out his grooves at a high level. Even without milestone singles like "I feel Good" and "Papa Got a brand New Bag" in this complimation, this is his most potent batch of funk jams (in my opinion). This complimation finds James settled into his style. As a result his music is harder and looser than his earlier funk hits.

No disrespect to his 60's era which is also great, If I had to pick a favorite era of songs, it would have to be this era. Brother James was not only the Minister of Super New New Heavy Funk, his music was the bible of the genre (and hip hop).

Mel Gibson's entry in to the '90s' morally ambiguous comic-crime-drama sweepstakes (successfully heralded by films like Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty, and Out of Sight) hardly breaks any fresh ground cinematically, but it's hard not to like its song collection and score. The tunes are a delightful, hipster-oriented romp through the tender, reflective side of testosterone (including Dean Martin's "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You," "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" by James Brown, and Lou Rawls's "If I Had My Life to Live Over") that set a suitably ironic tone kicked off by Dino's "Ain't That a Kick in the Head." Unusual for this kind of collection, Chris Boardman's fine instrumental underscore (a driving pastiche of early-'70s cop-show big-band funk and moody orchestral soundscapes) is represented by four tracks, including a tense, rollicking "Main Title" that recalls some of Lalo Schifrin's best early work. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A brief education.......2001-01-19

Studios don't "dump" songs from their soundtrack CDs. Some artists or their estates only give permission for songs to be used in the film but not on the CD. Or permission is granted, but the cost is too high. It's rare that you'll find a CD with every single song featured in a movie, even if it's a double CD. Class dismissed.

3 out of 5 stars ok.......2000-04-15

Tracks 8, 10 and 11 are great. The cd in general could have been better, but it reflects the movie which by the way was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1999-09-14

I'm already very familiar with the tunes that are on this CD. The songs that I'm after are the funky ones or the less known tunes. Can you help me with this or are these just filler tunes by studio musicians and can't be found?

5 out of 5 stars Where's Jimi Hendrix's VooDoo Child.......1999-08-15

To leave Jimi Hendrix's VooDoo Child made me dump this CD, TO BA

4 out of 5 stars Could have been just a touch better..........1999-08-11

Great sound track, till you see the movie...The choice to leave Jimi Hendrix's VooDoo Child leaves me cold to this CD, as it was a powerful part of the movie experience (no pun intended....it even sounded like it was a slightly different arrangement of the song as well

        5 out of 5 stars Punk's Number is 1208.......2003-01-21

After listening to many punk albums, I somehow came across the band 1208 and their album "Feedback is Payback". After hearing the song Just Anyone, I was hooked onto this band.

If you've ever heard of the Deviates, you can get an idea of what 1208 sounds like. The only thing is that 1208 is alot more powerful, yet at the same time more melodic than The Deviates are. This band is very chorus centered, and FIP gains alot of power from it.

1208 perfectly showcases their angst and melody on songs like "Outside Looking In", where the title is used a powerful refrain during the chorus. Other songs like Lies that Lie provide fast, furious skate-punk music, and excellent songs like "Just Anyone" provides both of these.

The songwriting talents of this band are also excellent. Few bands, no matter genre, can write this well, and it's an excellent talent 1208 doesn't put to waste. 1208 is another excellent Cali punk band, but with an attack only few other bands can match. This album, in short, is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Relentless Punk Rock.......2002-12-29

It seems by now people would know what the southbay is capable of in the punk area. Being that great bands like Black Flag, The Descendents, Pennywise, and The Deviates have all jumped outta there, the newest band to arise is 1208. Their debut is incredible mixing fast, furious punk rock with great lyrics and vocals. They are close friends of The Deviates which explains their similiar musical style, but in no way are they deviate clones. They have a sound and style all their own, and if this album is a hint of things to come, I can't wait to see what this band will become in time. True punk classic...

        5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2002-12-26

I saw them i concert earlier this month with Pulley and Guttermouth and i must say that they are great. Good vocals, good music. A solid band for sure.

4 out of 5 stars If it had any more soul...............2000-11-24

its not always easy being middle class white and having no musical exposure. I grew up completely missing Miles Davis or John Coltraine. When I was younger all I knew about 70's "Black" music was the cool wakka-chew-wakka sound from Shaft. Thus to explore a bit more I finally picked up a couple of these cd's and I wasn't dissapointed.

The record opens with the Truly awsome origional version of "Ball of COnfusion" and grooves its way through 12 tracks. The meat of this record though starts with "No sunshine when she's gone" by Grover Washington Jr, which starts nicely and revves itself into a jazz funk frenzy, horns, bass, guitars and all. The rest of this disk only gets better with tracks like "Breakout", the 8 minute jam "Who Is He & What Is He To You" and the killer "Be Thankful For What You Got". The disk ends on a bit of a down note with the dull "Love TKO", but all is rewarded on the start of the 2nd disk with Funkadelic's "One Nation Under A Groove" and is highlighted by the beautiful "Across 110th. Street ".

I must admit that I have always liked the 1st disk a bit more. I tend to like the 6-7-8 minute long "jams" and after multiple listenings have discovered lots of sample and straight-ahead rip offs of many songs by current artists (James Brown got straight ahead ripped off by Bowie and Lennon's "Fame).

Overall a great set. Repeat listening is assured, and this double disk will only get better with age.

5 out of 5 stars There is nothing like the Amazing Crowns LIVE!.......2001-09-30

I had no idea that this CD was even being made. Every music store I enter, I make sure that they sell the Amazing Crowns....and then I noticed this. I never miss the Amazing Crowns when they play a show around me. This CD is everything that I go to their shows for----they can make you move, if you have seen them I know you know what I mean!!!!This CD tides me over between shows.

4 out of 5 stars Take Some Home.......2001-08-15

Faster than studio. Does a great job of capturing the live energy of Crowns' shows. Sound quality is a little weak on the bass end and a little too strong in the mid range (typical for live recordings). If you like any of their albums, you need this one too.

PAYBACK LIVE (as hard as it is to believe) is the best release so far from the AMAZING "R***L" CROWNS. How can it be better than their self titled album, you ask? Take the passion and intensity of their first release and crank it up 4 to 5 notches, that's what you get on PAYBACK LIVE. The live album has some of the old favorites, some of the new favorites (from their 2nd release, ROYAL) and a few new CROWNS songs that you haven't heard before. These guys are the hardest working band on the road. To most critics dismay, after numerous albums, this is not a band you can simply pass off as a fluke...

Track 1. BABY'S OUT ON BAIL A hot roddin', fist fightin', bass thumping joint that will only slow down if you turn off the c.d. player. This is a tune you can't get on the SELF TITLED or ROYAL albums. Kendall's hiccupy vocals are key to making the AMAZING CROWNS engine purr like a kitten.

Track 5. AMERICAN NIGHTMARE I can't think of a better band to cover MISFIT'S songs than these dudes. The original song is definately a rockabilly tune, but how can you go wrong when one of the most talented bands in the business take it and turn it into something twice as good as it was to begin with.

Track 8. TROUBLE AT THE BALI HAI What an incredible instrumental! PAYBACK LIVE is the perfect album to have this song on, because a studio version just wouldn't cut it. J.D. Burgess has certainly proven himself as a guitar authority on this one. There's just no way to describe how awesome he is live if you haven't seen the CROWNS live. Seeing Kendall beat the living hell out of his maracas is quite a sight as well.

Track 9. RAT PATROL One word can describe this song. Cool. This song was done by John Haggerty, when the CROWNS get a hold of it, they turn it into a full-on punk masterpiece. I personally think it sounds a lot like the MISFITS, who, along with the CRAMPS, are a big influence on the AMAZING CROWNS.

I could go over every song on the album, but the indeniable truth is that if you know anything about them, you know everything they touch turns to gold. PAYBACK LIVE should definately be in your c.d. collection. Try not to get arrested for speeding when track # 14, 1965 GTO is playing in the car.

5 out of 5 stars you wanted the best...you got the best!.......2000-08-08

When the Amazing (Royal) Crowns are on...they're ON. These four Providence greasers are one of the most on-fire live bands you'll come across, and their studio recordings aren't too shabby neither! This wicked live set is pieced together from the three nights of their most recent Providence Payback shows. From the monster truck rally/rasslin' announcer intro to the final explosion of guitars, bass, and drums, you'll think yr sweatin' and screamin' along with 'em in the flesh. It's hard to capture the Crowns' live intensity on disc, but this comes damn close. It's got all the favorites, like "Do The Devil," some new tracks from "Royal" and their vicious takes on The Misfits' "American Nightmare" and Agent Orange's "Bloodstains." This is a must-have for any Crowns fan, rockabilly fan, or anyone who appreciates good, honest, real rock n' roll.
