I Want Some
Editorial Reviews

Make Up preach punk-rock gospel with three-chord minimalist rave-ups infused with a whole lotta soul. Imagine some kind of Prince/James Brown bastard stepchild raised on DIY ethics and DC punk. Ian Svenonius struts and prances his vocal pyrotechnics all over the funky backdrop, ranting, pleading, whispering, and shouting from his pulpit. I Want Some collects the best of Make Up singles, released on a host of indie labels, and the result, easily their best album, is jangled, whacked out, and splenetic. Though Make Up (like their predecessors Nation of Ulysses) imagine themselves as some kind of socialist-DIY collective, neither their half-baked political rants nor their hip cultural critiques are worth taking seriously. But the frenetic groove they hit on "Born on the Floor," the shake-your-ass stomp of "Pow! to the People," and the agonized soulful croon of "Walking on the Dune"--now that's serious. --Tod Nelson

The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Linda Eder - Great Voice.......2007-07-06
This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.
Not a voice.......an instrument.......2007-02-17
Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap
and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her
one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her
friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far.
the best female singer of the great american standards........2006-07-24
i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway
musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.
i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER
The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder.......2006-02-23
A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it.
Linda Eder shines with her Broadway album.......2006-02-18
Wow! Linda Eder has an outstanding voice. She sells Broadway in the styles of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. After hearing this you will want more.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Stephen Foster.......2007-05-13
I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.
Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27
I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.
Make the exquisite into the mundane.......2004-07-21
Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.
I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.
I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator
Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20
This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......
Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......
Here's to ya Hawks...........
One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09
This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. If you are in the mood to hear great music of Antebellum America, than I highly recommend this CD to you. You won't regret it!

Customer Reviews:
I been touching you... with my thumb..........2005-03-01
My fave by Make Up. A truly godly singles comp. It gets a round of applaw... The first five tracks alone make this worth the price.
Just adding my 15 cents. This was one of my fave bands, and is one of my favorite albums. It makes manual labor (hell, labor or anything else) of all sorts go nicely. Painting, washing dishes, running, working out, whatever... Great party album to boot, albeit only for a certain type of crowd...
Imagine James Brown as a skinnny white guy (with great hair), tucked into some kind of freaked out DIY socialist musical collective consisting of a unimposing but stellar drummer, a truly statuesque and low-end gifted babe of a bass player (yesyesyes, the interminable broken record: damnthatbassplaya's FOINE!) and a sublimely versatile guitarist/minimalist on keys. The singer- he whimpers, shouts, screams, chortles, keens, croons, pouts, simpers and ties you up tight with the scraps from the lil black dress of soul. A Great time.
This is funky and soulful as hell. This rocks. This rolls. The reason most people don't like and won't get this band: they (the band, not the people) defy categorization.
The lyrics are utterly bizarre (check the titles) and are delivered with such feeling and puissance, they take you by surprise and make you laugh, smile, groove. Svenonious is beyond being self-conscious; when his vocal rips up into the high stratosphere spyplane/soprano-orgasm octaves... It'll catch you off- and put you back on. The bass and drums are tight, and the explosive/jangly guitars and occasional organs n keys n stuff: fill in the sound nicely.
Now then, a caveat: I tend to go for music that either pulls you into the room or sends you out wailing and cupping your hands to your ears. This album falls into that category. Yes, it transecnds the hype (for a change)... Not for the light-hearted, BUT. If you dig The Faint, Al Green, the MC5, The Stooges, Sloan, Prince... you may find that you dig this. If you're in the know, then you're just probably listening to it now and nodding.
Make Up's eccentric compilation.......2004-06-14
'I Want Some' is a 21 song compilation of Make Up's first several releases, avant-garde, brash, with a sound wound-up like a ball of rubberbands. Just think a more funkier sounding Can without the experimentalism, a touch of The Velvet Underground's meandering cyclical style, the lo-fi sounds of early Pavement, and any garage-rock band from the 70's. The Can comparisons don't end there as Ian Svenonious' vocals resemble the strained rants of Malcolm Mooney. Alright, we're not talking weighty subject matter here with such lyrical gems like 'We're having a baby and what are we gonna do?' and 'Should I keep my motorcycle grey?' But the underlying DIY-ish sincerity in the vocals (almost like a soulful take on punk) is an interesting compliment to the fusion of the avante-garde, garage-rock, and rhythmic grooves of funk. Svenonious won't exactly be hailed as the next Bob Dylan, but along with tight songs, energy and tension, there are also some interesting and creative twists in the music. James Brown meets Krautrock. Who would've thought the combination would work.
Beleive.......2002-02-09
I have a friend, Slammer, that insists listening to Make-Up gets you laid. You really can't put this album on when you are chillin with a bunch of dudes. But that's hardly a reason to let it pass. There is only one word to describe this music, and it is "hip." It's on in the background of that party that you never thought you'd get invited to. Where the furniture and art work makes you want to go back to your house and redecorate, and you're embarassed of the clothes you're wearing. There was one of those old tv sets that's a fish tank now there. But when you buy it for yourself, you are on the way to being in the cool club. And it will blow you away when you open it up and read. The Gospel yeh-yeh, what, manefesto? Damn.
This is a COOL collection of all their vinyl only singles.......2001-11-24
All these were released as seven inchers (45's) on vinyl. Every one of these songs kick serious bootie, whereas with a Make Up album you get a few duds. This is the first Make Up album to get if you have no turn table and want something that gives you a sampling of their various phases. Garage rock, soul, and psychedelia. It's all here.
As far as Svenonious goes, the singer is adored and loathed by many. He is not a luke warm singer. He is hilarious on stage, and exudes a wierd frenzied power on the crowd. He is simultaneously ugly and gorgeous. I happen to think he sounds great on every one of these songs.
Also, the lyrical content is usually never quite as simple as it first seems.
I think alot of people were confused or frightened by their christian sounding songs. Some higher thinking was required to see just how brilliant they were.
Live, Svenonious and company are tight and out of sight...except when it is too hot and the crowd is on pot.
Svenonious and Michelle Mae are now in Wierd War. The Make Up are no more I hear.
Not for the mild-mannered.......2001-10-19
The gospel/garage/lo-fi sound of the make-up is not for the faint of heart. The music is raw and energetic, making it difficult to sit still while one listens. Miss Michelle Mae has mastered the art of the relatively simple but extremely infectious bassline, ably supported by Steve Gamboa's simmeringly tense backbeats. Canty uses his guitar like a paintbrush, laying it on thick where necessary or just adding a few drops here and there. However, the make-up's greatest strength lies in Ian Svenonius's amazingly deranged vocal stylings. This is a band that the listener either loves or hates. Svenonius has been compared alternately to James Brown and a strangled cat. The truth probably lies somewhere in between, but I will guarantee that you will never hear anything else like this amazingly unique voice. Svenonius's ragged falsetto periodically breaks off into an almost inhuman burst of howls and squeals, ranging up far higher than most humans are cabable of. Don't believe it? Try it for yourself. While you are at it, do yourself a favor and give this band a listen. If you can't stand the singing, maybe you should be looking for something more along the lines of "the wallflowers", or "mariah carey", or "the dave matthews band"--or any other band for whom music is a formula rather than a manifesto.

This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

Haunting.......2006-02-22
I'm giving this compilation 3 stars not because it isn't good...but because I feel that the String Quartet didn't take advantage of The Smiths catalogue. I was disappointed to see that some of my favorites were not covered. Maybe for volume 2?
Other than that...it was mostly beautiful. The cover of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" was particularly good. In fact, they managed to make it even more
melancholy than the original! I didn't even know that was possible.
mediocre.......2004-06-20
This CD sounds like a good idea, but on hearing it I was disappointed. The string quartet doesnt seem enough for a lot of these songs, maybe with a few more instruments in there it could work. It also seems, like many other string quartet tribute CDs, that these people playing the songs are not fans of the band, they don't seem to get into the music, or understand what makes it great. This CD is only nescassary for hardcore smiths fans that already have their albums.
Great album........2004-04-04
This is a wonderful album if you truly are a "Smiths" fan. The strings do an excellent job of masking as Morrissey's voice. However, even if you aren't a fan of The Smiths, the melodies are enjoyable. Johnny Marr will go down as a gifted guitarist/writer (as all his Guitar magazine accolades). People who aren't fans or are "Morrissey-jaded" wouldn't like this or probably anything else not Morrissey. Oh yeah, that's right I said it!!!
a little odd.......2003-10-05
Uh, this is wierd. It is like Morrissey and the Smiths covering Metalica. It just doesn't fit. Even so, for the hardcore Smiths fan it is worth the buy. Back To The Old HOuse was enjoyable, but I would suggest that you listen to the versions of other artists. And who chose the playlist? Crappy at best.
Worked for The Cure tribute not for The Smiths.......2003-09-08
The String Quartet's tribute to The Smiths doesn't quite work as well as the tribute to The Cure. Maybe it's because the music from The Cure is much more colorful and has more layer and works wonderfully well with string instruments. However, without Morrisey's voice the string music doesn't work well.
