Delightfully dreary........2005-12-28
The Cocteau Twins' first release was, indeed, very different from everything that came after it. Very simple, somewhat minimalistic, perhaps slightly disturbing to the light of heart. From the opening track, Blood Bitch, you know you're dealing with people who were once quite angry. Very calm, but very angry, nonetheless.
The album takes some time to truly appreciate. (The Peel Sessions tracks, immediately following Grail Overfloweth, are the easiest to 'get into.' The album would lose much of its charm without them.) The songs consist of only vocals, drums, guitar and bass. The drums are repetitive, looping throughout whole songs. The variations in melody, however, are always artful and unique, as is Elizabeth Fraser's erratically beautiful and soft voice, which has a tendency to obscure most of her words beyond the slightest recognition. (Once in a while you'll be able to pick out phrases or words, but rarely will you be afforded the opportunity to understand an entire song.) The bass is thick, but smooth. The guitars are usually heavily textured, with a distinct ethereal quality.
This is a calm, but less than subtly vicious album. An elegantly simple blend of goth, shoegaze and ethereal genres stands to be one of the most beautiful and unique albums ever recorded.
Stretch out and enjoy.......2001-05-26
I bought this album (yes, i have it on vinyl as well as many of the original 12" eps)while in germany in the early 80's and getting the fresh CD copy is invigorating. I have followed CTS career and enjoyed the varied sounds on all the albums, and it all comes back to this one. all the trappings are here waiting to morph into the mellower sounds and great dancy songs that came later. "shallow then halo" and "wax and wane" remains two of my personal all time fave songs. definitely obtain the import. the CD has tunes not available on original vinyl or on the domestic CD, some quite cool. everyone from planet earth deserves to hear this again.......
A bit dark and repetitive.......1999-05-12
Well, I have to admit I have not heard all of the Twins albums but I am a bit let down with this one, it seems as though the beat is the same in each song, a few are great, and the vocals are nice, I really enjoy Milk and Kisses, for The angelic exotic voice of Liz blows me away, more people in the US need to listen, and take the time, for there is the magic world of the Cocteau Twins out there and many are not tuned in.:0) If anyone reads this and could give me some new info on the Twins that would be great, I am seeking more new music and recomendations, I feel a bit alone in my music taste! help...
Surprisingly disappointing.......1999-01-14
With the exception of 'Feet like Fins', this collection of songs is a dissapointment for those who really enjoy early masterpieces such as "Pink Opaque" and "Head over Heels". Like an experiment gone bad. Fortunately they worked their way through this and evolved to create 'Blue Bell Knolls'!
Breakthrough album that established the Cocteau Twins!.......1998-08-03
"Garlands" is the album that established the Cocteau Twins as the innovator of music in itself. While older fans may take more time in appreciating this esoteric, fascinating, and oftentimes, frightening piece of work, this CD stands out in any Cocteau Twins collection. You must have it and hear it for yourself! It will give yout the spine-tingling experience that you seek.
