This list and compilation of college fight songs around the country is a disgrace. Oregon State University??? Give me a break! no one doesn't even know where that rookie of a school is.

This is a great collection of college fight songs for college sports fans. How many times have you remembered the melody of one of the college sports teams and could not remember which school it belonged to? This album is a good collection of some of the most popular college fight songs. My wife took the CD to her new high school where she works so they could use it to adopt a college fight song for the new high school.

...how does New Mexico, Rice, and Syracuse get on this CD and NOT Texas, Florida State, and Tennessee?

Otherwise, a nice compilation of pieces...as stated in previous posts, quality isn't always great (but what marching bands really sound great anyway?).

uses a review of a compilation of fight songs to take the opportunity to bash UCLA and USC's fight songs. Gimme a break.

Other than that, the recordings sound like old versions of the song, which might sound off to people who aren't familiar with how the song was played 50 or so odd years ago.

CD of patriotic music, armed forces songs and SSB. My friend is hosting moring radio show and wanted to salute the armed services and was looking for a "normal" good Star Spangled Banner .. Well we got it in this CD. Fantastic. Used every morning with a different salute to different services. KTIB radio 640 in Thibodaux, La.

Well, all I can say is I'm glad amazon.com offered a sampling. The musical prowess of the musicians brought back fond memories for me......from when I was in 7th grade and just learning to play the trombone. If you're tone deaf, then this is the CD for your Fourth of July Picnic this year. Meanwhile, I'm going to keep on searching.

By dropping their y'allternative pretensions, busting out their rock chops, and releasing the pop child within, the Old 97's come out of the country and into the limelight. Some fans may decry the lack of twang, but there is no denying that Fight Songs is a terrific album, from its rollicking guitars to Rhett Miller's aw-shucks lyrical look at love's travails. --Tod Nelson

Barely into the second track of Fight Songs the Old 97's, who've made cantankerous sore-heartedness a virtue, sound harmonically mellow and sweet. "Lonely Holiday," on first pass, is edgeless, but then you get "19" and yet more polished eschewal of this old band's incisive penchant. Does it bring Fight Songs down? A bit, but clean production aside, the Old 97's show tremendous growth from the scrappy twang of Wreck Your Life and even Too Far to Care. These are pop tunes, no doubt, and the twang might be somewhat eclipsed in spots. Guitarist and singer Rhett Miller's hardly budged an inch on his confessional pissing and moaning, still keeping it clear that he's bent out of shape. And the band's decided to trim its instrumental colors in the production process, which leads to a vaguely compressed feel in the guitars and an even more up-front occasion for Miller to sound off. --Andrew Bartlett

Old 97's have rock hearts and mixed emotions. Both are on prominent display in Fight Songs, an album that for me at least is a bit more consisistently satisfying than the later Satellite Rides. As a writer, Rhett Miller loves wordplay. Check out Indefinitely, a funny story of getting caught in the act, embarrassing even "though you're twenty-nine years old," and as for the romance, he's "in definitely," except when he's feeling "indefinitely" about it. Oppenheimer is a flat-out falling in love song, with some nifty background handclaps that recall street corner a capella or some of the better entertainment on the New York City subway system. Elsewhere, in Nineteen he captures precisely what it means to be a dewy but horny male of that age -- "nineteen is not the age of reason...all I ever wanted to do was lie around in bed with you." Most of these songs recount, as in Busted Afternoon, busted relationships, but ones remembered fondly and as part of living. Lonely Holiday, Murder (or a Heart Attack), Let the Idiot Speak, and Valentine are other top-notch cuts. In nearly all of them, hearts break, hearts mend, ready to get broken again. All of this plays out to music that is consistently polished, well-produced, and at times almost exultant in its blasting guitars and insistent drum lines. Maybe not brilliant, but Fight Songs is great music.

I have every Old 97s CD, but this has always been the stand out to me. By far their best and the CD that turned me in to a dedicated fan. I've probably given a half dozen copies of this CD to friends with my unqualified recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars The Band Who Could Do No Wrong.......2005-02-19

I first heard Old 97's on a local public radio station just after this album came out. They were playing "Oppenheimer". My first thought was that the singer sounded a bit like The Cure's Robert Smith. My second thought was that this was a great song; Catchy as could be, and just well written all the way around. I soon realized that this station played Old 97's quite frequently, and as I listened to all that I heard, I just fell in love. "Fight Songs" was the first Old 97's album I ever bought, and it is still my favorite. The album opens with "Jagged", a perfect example of edgy pop with just enough twang to it. "Lonely Holiday" is depressing in a wonderful way, leaving you feeling the pain of love. "Oppenheimer" and "Indefinitely" are happy-go-lucky, poppy sort of numbers that are absolutely perfect for driving in the car on a sunny day; "Nineteen" and "Murder (or a Heart Attack)" are radio-friendly numbers, but are well crafted, and don't let even the die-hard, cling-to-the-old-stuff Old 97's fan down. My least favorite song on this album for a long time was "What we talk about". I would always skip past it when I'd listen to this disc. Once I really gave it a good listen, it became one of my personal faves; Don't make the same mistake I did. The final track, "Valentine" is the icing on the cake. As if Rhett Miller's voice weren't enough to make this band shine, bassist Murray Hammond takes over vocals on this track (as well as on "Crash on the Barrelhead"), and literally draws that gut-wrenching, life-ending, heartbreaking feeling right out of you. I can't recommend this album OR this band highly enough. Why are you still sitting here reading? Go buy this CD!!

With "Fight Songs," the Old 97's sound got a bit punchier and the harder rockin' direction was explored more with the followup "Satellite Rides," another great record. "Fight Songs" was the album that alienated a lot of the band's hardcore following, but it is a record that really grows on you. Besides the insanely catchy songs like the opening cut "Jagged" and the (almost) hit "Nineteen," there is plenty more that can be appreciated by anyone who enjoys great rock 'n' roll. "Murder or a Heart Attack" is probably one of the five best songs written by Rhett Miller, who, by the way, has written dozens of truly masterful songs, and "Oppenheimer" is a great, timeless tune. This album is a great "road trip" type album, but is really great for any time.

This was my second Old 97s disc, after "Too Far To Care," and it took me a bit longer to get into than their earlier material. However, it's become my most listened-to disc from what is probably my favorite band right now. This is guitar-pop in its classic sense- as in the Kinks, the Beatles and early REM, with catchy hooks and clever lyrics. It is also very much a logical extension from their earlier work. "Too Far to Care" is rougher and louder, closer to Rancid perhaps than Ray Davies, but they were obviously beginning to branch into less traditionally "country" sounding areas already. In my mind this is not too much of a departure for a band that has already broken down the barriers between country and pop.

I saw the band play live not so long ago, and the songs from this album stood up next to their earlier and later work very nicely. "Crash on the Barrelhead" was among my few favorite songs performed. See them live, and buy this disc. It's a great place to start with the band.

    With songs penned by Mötley Crüe, Chuck Berry, R. Kelly, Spade Cooley, Ike Turner, and Gary Glitter, Shivaree's notion of what comprises a gorgeous album of love songs is radically different than Frank Sinatra's or Tony Bennett's. But vocalist Ambrosia Parsley--the Air America network's singing newswoman--is nearly as distinctive a stylist, with a sweet breathy timbre that coats lyrics with fragility, wanting, innocence, or wickedness at whim. That plus Shivaree's textural command make their fourth album more interpretive than a mere collection of covers. A growling industrial-punk treatment pushes the pedal down on Berry's "I Wanna Be Your Driver," and Parsley's warm cooing is the wanton, feminine flip side of Kelly's machismo in "Half on a Baby." Some of the best tunes, like Tanya Tucker's 1974 hit "Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone)," undergo otherworldly transformations worthy of Ennio Morricone via Shivaree's taste for colorful electronics. And others, like Glitter's "Hello! Hello! I'm Back Again," stay closer to text.     Let's get right to the crux of the matter: Can the University of Michigan band really do justice to school songs from Big 10 rivals such as the University of Illinois, Northwestern, and the University of Iowa? The answer is mixed. The University of Wisconsin warhorse "On, Wisconsin" is played with verve and given a nifty arrangement, but the brassy Wolverine partisans don't really put their heart into cross-state rival Michigan State University's "MSU Fight Song." Road tripping from UCLA to the University of Maine, the UM band tackles staples ("Notre Dame Victory March," "Eyes of Texas," "Anchors Away," the stirring "Varsity") and sleepers ("Down, Down the Field," "Fight On, Pennsylvania"). Only someone who, as was once said of Michigan alumnus Gerald Ford, "played too many games without a helmet," would listen to 41 Great College Football Victory Songs in one sitting, but for those who need to feel a little school fight, fight, fight, here's all the collegiate spirit one needs. --Steven Stolder

    Considering the fact that the University of California - Berkeley boasts the largest repetoire {sp?} of school songs of ANY university in the country makes the fact that this compilation has not included ANY of them problematic at the very least. Big C (or Sons of Westwood to you theiving baby bears out there) - Fight for California - Sons of California - Stanford Jonah - Golden Bear - Make Way for the Bear - Roll On - Cal Band March - California Triumph - Palms of Victory - California Indian Song - California Marching Song - One More River - All Hail - Hail to California - California, We're For You --

    Take your pick - they are all fantastic - and I think I forgot a few...

    To leave out Cal is either shoddy work or bad temperment.

    Any album that lists the "Iowa Fight Song" followed by (Iowa State) can't be any good. It's the University of Iowa Fight Song, not Iowa State University. And from the preview I heard, they didn't do it justice anyway.

    If you are looking for the fiery songs we all hear on Saturdays throughout the fall, keep looking. The song selection also dates this album. Many of today's power houses are excluded in favor of those who saw their days of glory before my lifetime. It is also insulting to see the Iowa Fight Song credited to Iowa State.

Sousa was the greatest march composer in the history of, well, marching, and this disc includes many fresh and interesting pieces that will likely be unfamiliar, as well as a couple of favorites (including "The Liberty Bell," famous as the theme to Monty Python's Flying Circus). But by and large, this disc focuses on the less well known pieces, though there's not a dud in the lot. Sousa had a special gift for orchestration and for writing tunes with real rhythmic interest; his marches never sound dull. Frederick Fennell is the simply the best wind band conductor around, and these performances are standard- setters. --David Hurwitz

    This is an outstanding CD. The sound quality is very good. The instrumental balance is very good. It's interesting to compare the rather subtle difference in the percussion section performance between the two recording dates, particulalarly the cymbalist.
    Sousa had an uncanny ability to score the cymbal strike at places which add significantly to the listening experience.

    In the 60s, Fennell and the Eastman Wind ensemble recorded a good amount of marches by Sousa, many released on this album, and the rest (as far as I know) on the album Hands Across the Sea. As many of Sousa's best marches are on that later album, this one falls a bit short of greatness -- but not my much.

    Sousa knew his marches, writting something like 200 of them, and almost every one of these is a great example of how to write a good march. Indeed, The Liberty Bell and Manhatten Beach are two of my alltime favorite marches. However, being prolific often means that there will be misses, and many here, while written well, just aren't all that memorable. I'd be hard pressed to be able to identify such pieces as The Gallant Seventh, New Mexico, or the Black Horse Troop unless I had just listened to them.

    Still, one has to admire the creative way Sousa sometimes put his music together. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company uses the song 'Aude Lang Syne' for its trio, and it fits so well that it's hard to believe he didn't write it himself. The Liberty Bell uses tubular bells in *just* the right spots that it makes an impact every time one listens. And Sabre And Spurs uses wook blocks to simulate horses, which also works great.

    So overall, this is a solid album that has its ups and downs. The sound quality is great, haveing a certain amount of 'bite' that's almost impossible with digital recordings, the playing impecable, and there's plenty of variety.

    I've owned this CD for several years, and bought a copy recently as a Christmas gift. Frederick Fennell is a modern master of band and marches, and I own several of his recordings. What makes this CD a standout for me is the Mercury Living Presence recording and remastering method. I own over two dozen of this series because Living Presence does indeed represent a different method of producing music for the recorded media. It DOES sound more lifelike to me than conventional multimike recordings. To anyone considering purchase of this CD I'd recommend also ordering 'Screamers', the Living Presence CD of circus marches. To me this is feel-good music at its best, and terrific for listing in the car! Additionally, the Living Presence series stands out for its excellent liner notes with explanations of the Living Presence method. This CD is a keeper. Incidentally, the recipient of this CD has since gone out and bought several other Living Presence CD's after hearing this!s

    5 out of 5 stars MASTERFUL RENDITIONS IN GLORIOUS RECORDED SOUND.......2001-11-16

    An utterly masterful set, containing many of Sousa's unjustly neglected works. (An integral recording of his complete marches is overdue by a good half-century.*) Fennell conducts with incredible verve, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble responds in kind, with immaculately tight and polished performances. The recording is demonstration-class. Sousa has never sounded better, and probably never will.

    *EDIT: Actually, a nearly-complete recording of the marches has been available, as of the time of this review, for at least a good quarter-century--first on LP, now on CD: that being, a series of analog recordings by The Detroit Concert Band, led by Leonard B. Smith. Currently available from Walking Frog Records (on five CDs), the DCB/Smith collection unfortunately suffers from some serious problems--not the least of which is the highly variable and substandard quality of the recorded sound.

      This standard collection of Sousa's marches is nicely played throughout by the US Marine Band. All the well known marches by Sousa are here. Little is new here in that regard. The CD has in its title Dances and other Music. Only "Le Reine De Le Mer" is in this category and the piece is more an overture than a dance. The "Gallent 7th March" is not normally in the top 10 constantly played Sousa marches, but it is worthy of note. Sousa composed it for the fashionable 7th Regiment New York National Guard. This unit had a good band which was well known in Sousa's day and often combined performances with the Sousa band in New York City.

      Sousa was director of music for the US Marine band for 10 years, 1882-92. He left to form his own band because he knew he could make a lot more money on his own. Suffice to say that Sousa greatly transformed this band from a 2nd rate ensemble to one of the best in the USA. The US Marine Band is also the oldest musical organization in the country, dating back to 1802 when Washington DC was still a wooded Virginia back water built over sickly swamps. Today this band probably gives one of the best versions of Sousa's music. Still, the listener should consider other collections by the Royal Artillery Band available on Amazon which provides a much fuller range of Sousa's music with authentic programing.

      Although the concert band in Ann Arbor puts in a yoeman-like performance, the arrangements are just awful. UM's band always seems to fumble the ball when it comes to arranging the fight songs of other teams in the Big T(elev)en, and that tendency shows through on this album. At least the concert band doesn't "jump-march" during their performance, so there isn't that annoying drop in tone, tenor and constancy every two beats, like there is at live performances.
      With any luck, maybe Ohio State - the nation's best band - will put out a comparable CD. Once they play even an opposing team's fight song, they own it.

      As a member of a Big Ten marching band, I have had the good fortune to watch most of these groups perform live on the field on Saturday afternoons. These recordings would sound more at place on the soundtrack to the Nutcracker. There is great musicianship as would be expected from a Big Ten band, but these are not the legendary fight songs that I thought I was purchasing. Does anyone know of a compiliation of the Saturday versions of these great songs?

      Excellent symphonic band arrangements of some great favorites. These college kids are remarkable players. My only criticism is that some of the arrangements seem to make these marches into Broadway showstoppers and take excessive liberties with the original scores. Good audio quality for a recording made at the beginning of the digital era.

      I bought this record when it first came out. My father and I used to listen to it on the way to Football games. The songs are performed by U of M's concert band, not their marching band, so the sound is even more incredible. If you ever hear commercials with fight songs in the background, this is their source!! My record is long been scratched so now I'm getting it on CD. Best when listened to on saturday mornings.

      UM is certainly one of the finest marching bands in the nation; but these arangements are just awful. The rendition for On Brave Old Army Team sounds like something conjured up for the soundtrack of a bad war movie. This would be a great CD if they just played them straight.

      If you enjoy running to cadence, this is a good buy, They are easy to understand and help get you pumped up for a good run. The cadences don't flow from one to the next as smoothly as I would like but still rythmic. A good buy.
