Those who think the indie-electronic crossover begins and ends with Dntel and the Postal Service are obviously not aware of Dub Narcotic Sound System and their fellow dub-punk pranksters The Make-Up and Trenchmouth. Spawned from last decade's rabidly DIY connection between the Washingtons (D.C. and state), these bands turned their playful sing-a-long ditties into space-age sock-hop jams with an equal mix of primitive soul drumming and low-slung bass reverb."We're not searching for the perfect beat," proclaims Calvin Johnson in his trademark monotone on "Joint, Joint." The beat might not be precise, but the loose bounce found all over this album swings supreme. Eschewing laptop cleanliness, Dub Narcotic gets old style dirty-dirty like Booker T and John Spencer left alone with an Echoplex and an ample supply of trucker speed. You might need to wipe down your CD player after rocking this disc.

I know Michael Haas, executive producer. He has made a total commitment to locating and recording work of musicians whose work was banned by the Hitler regime because composers, etc. were even suspected to be Jewish, gay, gypsy, etc. One atheist or agnostic composer was sent to concentration camp because his father had been a Jew in the past.

This is needed to give a picture of the survival of music by talented people under duress.

I am totally addicted to this album. I've really liked all the dnss stuff that i've heard but this is just better than anything. I think it's got just the right amount of everything (punk,funk,dubness) on this album. It's like they've really worked on their formula of what's good and what is not. It is easily their most consistent offering to date. i'm going to have to go and listen to it again in a minute. check out the track blood flow, it is just amazingly funky and danceable with a bit of anti-bush/rumsfeld lyric thrown in by calvin. buy it if you want to shake your ass to something classy.
