The harrowing sonic abuse meted out by Animositisomina confirms that crippling drug addiction, waning commercial fortunes, and the onset of middle age have enabled Ministry's screamer-songwriter Al Jourgensen's rage. Indeed, Jourgensen once explained the album's title thusly: "It's the word 'animosity' spelled forwards and backwards, minus the y. It's double the hatred." This is good, for few can pierce the atmosphere with such brute force as Jourgensen and sidekick Paul Barker when they put their minds, guitars, and Pro-Tools to it. Animositisomina bursts forth from the gate with "Animosity," a punishing diatribe against intolerance that welds mind-numbingly forceful shards of sound with unholy--and utterly disturbing--slashes of pure noise. "Broken" is unmitigated guiterrorism delivered without remorse. Throughout, Animositisomina throws down a jet-black wall of sound unlike any Phil Spector could have imagined, with one exception: a scorching cover of the Magazine classic, "The Light Pours Out of Me," which the group brutalizes with way-fast percussion, but otherwise (and somewhat curiously) leaves intact. In a world gone mad, it's nice to know that some things--like Ministry's ability to tear up the floorboards with crushing efficiency--never change. --Kim Hughes

4 out of 5 stars WHY THE BAD REVIEWS?.......2007-05-11

Not sure of the bad reviews here. People looking for classic Ministry is not really a music lover. Your athems were written along time ago Grow up. and as for samples. Samples from other sources does not a song make.

Give this album or any album three time spin. that means play it three times to familiarize yourself with the songs. Stop living in the past. if an artist wants to go in different directions than it is his right too. Sometimes its the Audiences fault for not being open minded enough to grasp the material. In my opinion its the audiences fault and record executives also as to why we have so much crap in record stores.

This album is not for the alternative Sheep looking for the same songs. There is an Eighties Retro Station somewhere in your town. Have fun Kiddies. This album Rocks. its not Al Jourgensens fault your to lame to get it.

3 out of 5 stars This is a mediocre Ministry album........2007-01-06

When I first played this all the way through, I was seriously dissapointed, but I wasn't expecting much after Dark Side of the Spoon (which is terrible). Filth Pig has 3 good songs and one is a cover song. Animositisomina is like that. There are 4 good songs, one is a cover song, and the rest can be ignored. The production value on this album is quite low and it is noticeable. This is yet another not so memorable album by Ministry. Just skip ahead to Houses of the Mole and Rio Grande Blood.

4 out of 5 stars Back from the darkness.......2006-06-07

This is the first album that really gets back to the "Ministry" sound since "Psalm69" back in '92. "Filthpig" was a bit of a well known misfire, "Darkside Of The Spoon" good but more akin to incredibly dark mood music than the "Ministry" everyone loves and "Sphinctour" was a fairly good live album. It's here where big bad Al and his partners in crime start to get back some of there trademark fire. First track "Animosity" is the sonic equivalent of being battered around the head with a bile soaked rusty iron bar and is a good statement of intent for the whole album. One of Al Jourgensen's best talents is being able to create excellent songs whether they're stomping industrial behemoth's or slow and menacing and there are both kinds found here. The drug reference's of "Shove" sample lyric "Woke up confused in a place I didn't know" and album closing instrumental work "Leper" are both examples of good quality "Ministry". This album also includes long time live favourite "The Light Pours Out Of Me" a cover of a song by Magazine.

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2005-12-08

ministry is one of my favorite bands that i've never had the pleasure to see,yet anyway.al jourgenson is an individual who always pleases this mind and always has the right things to say, plus it doesn't hurt that the music kicks a**.i have yet to hear a ministry album that i haven't liked, even from the early days.if you like industrial/metal than you should be able to apprecite this.check out "the light pours out of me" especially on the headphones.get this album and blast it in your car with the windows down.let's piss off all the bassers.

5 out of 5 stars Ministry. Ministry. Ministry........2005-02-27

I really believe that this is up there with their earlier work. This is definitely hypnotic. But not in the way of bands such as Sunn 0))) or 0-l even..This is a different type of Hypnotic. Repetitive in a small way, but if you are already a fan of Ministry, i doubt you could hate this record.

This album starts off with a crushing riff, and it just gets better and better. Animosity, Unsung, Piss, The Light Pours Out of Me (Especially "hypnotic" when the drumming hardly changes a beat), Shove, Stolen and Leper are my personal favourites on this album.

The whole album is very loud. Just like their newest album, Houses of the Mole, is loud too. And it being loud is a good thing, obviously. Ministry are very influential, and combine crushing riffs that sometimes repeat themselves over and over again, with eerie, sometimes shouty, vocals..All in all, look no further than this band for THE definition of Industrial Metal.

This album should not be overlooked for any reason. It is easily up there, like i said, with their earlier work..And every fan must, and probably does by now, own this. The final song Leper, is just an example of what i mean by hypnotic..As it goes for 9:05 mins. And the ending riff, that goes for just about 5 mins, will stay in your head for a long time after you hear it. This album deserves respect. 5/5

        Album Description

When it comes to a Ministry record, fans can always find comfort in a few unshakable maxims: There shall be whiplash-inducing industrial drum beats. There shall be crushingly loud and distorted guitars. And yes, there shall be lyrics dealing with death, hatred, violence, and general alienation and disgust with just about everything. Longtime Ministry admirers will be glad to know that all those qualities are firmly in place on ANIMOSITISOMINA, an album that finds Ministry not wavering an inch after 20 years of recording. Naturally, this formula doesn't allow for a lot of variety, but Al Jourgensen and crew are simply committed to delivering the most unwaveringly heavy and intense music this side of death metal. Not surprisingly, ANIMOSITISOMINA delivers just that in spades. Even the mass acceptance of groups as heavy as Mudvayne and Pantera did little to lessen Ministry's impact. This is hard, intense stuff that has, and hopefully always will have, the ability to instantly tick off parents and inspire undying devotion in disenfranchised teens everywhere. Mayan. 2004.

4 out of 5 stars Dualdisc not much better than the CD.......2007-01-16

If you want a full review of this CD, check out the normal CD version on Amazon. There are dozens of good reviews. I'm focusing this review on just the Dualdisc version.

This dualdisc cost a few dollars more, and you're probably wondering if it's worth it. Here's what you get:

        The CD portion:
        1. Full length normal CD version of all the songs.

        The DVD audio portion:
        2. Full length 5.1 DVD-A version of all the songs.
        3. Full length 5.1 Dolby Digital version of all the songs.
        4. A very short interview with some band members about making Animositisomina.
        5. A brief text biography of Ministry.

        The DVD ROM portion:
        6. A lame movie about how 5.1 sound is mastered.
        7. Encoded WMA and AAC files of all the tracks.

The 5.1 DVD-A and 5.1 Dolby Digital version of the album are a little more interesting than the normal CD version. The 5.1 versions generally give you the feel that your surrounded by the music, with vocals from the center channel, guitars and drums from the front two channels, and backup vocals and other effects from the rear surround speakers. This is a bit unadventurous, especially from a band like Ministry. Other bands, The Crystal Method for example, use 5.1 audio to play lots of neat audio tricks, like sending sound swirling around the room or bouncing a drum track back and forth between two different speakers. Ministry's 5.1 mastering of Animositisomina is much less interesting.

But you can only listen to the 5.1 versions if you have 6 analog multichannel connections from your DVD player to your amp. Most people don't have this set-up because they don't regularly listen to DVD-A and SACD. If you have this set up, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you don't already have that kind of setup, the DVD-A version will play as normal stereo and won't sound much different from the CD version unless you have a very sharp ear and an expensive set of speakers. Even then, the difference is only very slight.

The other DVD extras are all pretty worthless. I have no idea why they provide you with encrypted WMA and AAC files. Don't most people want to do this encoding themselves? The text biography is nothing that you can't find on the web, and the band interview is very very short and not at all interesting.

So is this worth the extra money? If you already have 6 channel analog connections from your DVD player to you 5.1 capable amp, then the higher quality and more engrossing sound from the DVD-A and Dolby versions make this Dualdisc worth a few extra bucks. Otherwise, just buy the cheaper CD version.

I would give the CD version 4 stars. I'm also giving the Dualdisc version 4 stars because it doesn't offer much of an improvement.

3 out of 5 stars cd great, dvd sucks.......2004-12-14

ministry's last good album. everyone likes houses of the mole, but i think it's just an attempt by al to go back to the formula that sold the most albums, but what do i know? this album heads in that direction as well, but i think it's a lot more original and has many more influences of different genres of music. after paul left, the music moved backward.

anyway, the dvd part sucks because the only actual footage of anything is mostly just some cameraman in a vehicle shooting footage of run-down texas, with a few clips of al and paul saying crap about the then "new" album. the rest is an article about their comeback and when playing each song on the dvd function there's a different picture of the band and/or then-band members. the sound quality is supposed to be twice as good, but it sounds just as good as the regular album, which is already good quality.

just get the album instead (which alone i would give five f*cking stars).
