5 out of 5 stars Introduction To The World's Most Overlooked Supergroup.......2007-04-28

Under the Milky Way: The Best of the Church" is primarily a good compilation of mostly 1980 to 1990 Church CDs that were very good to great. Starfish was their only masterpiece in this era. The songs "Under The Milky Way" and "Metropolis" gave them warranted fame and acclaim. Suddenly in 1992 the Church began to make superlative CD's on a par with Pink Floyd, Radiohead and vintage U2. Tragically, the music industry ignored or forgot about the Church. They have five CDs that are better than Radioheads or U2s five best CDs. They are called "Priest=Aura","Sometime Anywhere", "Hologram Of Baal", "After Everything Now This" and "Uninvited Like The Clouds". The latter four CDs are so deep and complex a few listens are needed. The Church's lead vocalist, Steve Kilbey, is the key but the three other band members are equally vital. The Church are totally innovative and unique but their dreamy, elaborate and mesmerizing sound is a hybrid of quality Pink Floyd, U2 and Radiohead. Everything this band has recorded since 1992 is musically gold but not nearly enough of these superlative recordings have been sold. This is the biggest musical travesty since the grievous implosion and demise of the Beatles's inspired band called Badfinger in 1975. I am so glad that the brillant Church have somehow endured and continue to do their best without the Universal Acclaim that they indisputably deserve !

5 out of 5 stars very nice .......2006-10-11

I'm not an expert on The Church--I've always liked the song "Under the Milky Way", but didn't know their other songs. After listening to a few of the tracks on this web page, I decided to buy it.

I'm very happy with it. All the songs are good--there isn't any "filler". Good vocals, good guitar, and good melodies and song writing. If you like the sound of "Under the Milky Way", you'll like the rest of this collection.

3 out of 5 stars The Impossible Task.......2006-02-25

It is impossible to make a greatest hits package that satisfies everyone, especially when a band has been around as long as the Church. Another problem is that I think their hit, "Under The Milky Way", is one of their most boring songs. I've tried so hard to like this song, but I have come to realize I am just the only person alive that just will never get anything out of it. Since it has to be included this album falls way short of my expectations. I usually find true fans of a group don't like the radio hit, but what baffles me more about not liking this song, is that even longtime fans love it so I am really out of touch with this album. Therefore I doubt my Greatest Hits will work for most, but I feel compelled to list it any way. Why 3 songs for the first CD and 2 or less for every other release. It doesn't make sense so I will do away with that format. Here goes: "Unguarded Moment", "Too Fast For You", "Destination", "Hotel Womb",(I do agree Starfish is absolutely brilliant. I could take many songs off this album, but will ignore "Reptile" and "Under The Milky Way", which to me just don't measure up and include two of the best songs ever.), "Tantalized", "Roman" (I thought "Myrrh" was easily left off, but again many thought this to be among the best the Church ever did. I of course could have went with tons of other songs from "Columbus" to "Youth Worshipper", but decided on "Roman", I would agree with "A Month Of Sundays", "Ripple", and if you are going to include "Two Places At Once", which I will also than I have to include "Day Of The Dead", and even "Metropolis" and for another off this album, "Disappointment". I guess I have to include "Under The Milky Way" because that is how business works and the rest can be filled with obscure tunes like "The View" and maybe some prime b-sides.

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive!.......2005-01-28

This album is a great introduction to the music of the Aussie band The Church, which recorded in the '80s and '90s, and I believe is still putting out music today. Their style is creative electric rock, with terrific melodies, vocals and musicianship. This album is a well-compiled "greatest hits" style collection. Enthusiasts will want the actual albums, but for the casual fan this is a very good selection of tunes. Highlights include "The Unguarded Moment", "Reptile", "Ripple", "Metropolis" and of course the title track. In fact, nearly all the songs are terrific.

3 out of 5 stars Field of Mars.......2004-11-14

If you're here for Under the Milky Way - GET STARFISH!
Then you will find yourself collecting their whole catalog -don't say you weren't warned!
This collection is kind of an odd mish-mash. It is not "the best of." The songs pulled out of their albums just don't have the same impact and the sound quality is not up to par as on the album releases. I initially bought this, but when I got the full albums, they became my favorite band of all time.

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Relaxing Project.......2007-06-15

My only other experience with Charlotte Church was seeing part of a PBS special on her, where she sang songs like "Some Enchanted Evening". I actually enjoy her voice on this style of music.

I love her rendition of "Amazing Grace". She also did good on covering "Bridge Over Troubled Water", though I was disappointed she didn't try the high note on the verses as Garfunkel did. My favorite on the project was "It's the Heart That Matters Most".

If I want some beautiful sounding music to relax to while I'm working, this would be a very good project for that.

3 out of 5 stars It just cannot be the end for Charlotte's classical career! :(.......2006-08-20

I'm just shocked that Charlotte has decided to end her classical career with this mediocre assortment of her most loved pieces from her other albums! I wish that she had re-sung all of the pieces to make them sound better than ever with her mature voice! To me, it seems disgusting that anyone would want to end their career with a last album that sounds the way this album does!

Her beginning pieces (Pie Jesu, My Lagan Love, In Trutina, Panis Angelicus, and Amazing Grace) were sung at the beginning of her classical career, and you can hear her flat vowels and shaky low notes. You can also hear it in "She Moved Thru the Fair". It's really annoying!

La Pastorella is a beautiful song to sing, and Church masters it beautifully! Just Wave Hello - the Ford Anthem, is also a beautiful piece, with amazing work from the orchestra.

Ave Maria is a complete annoyance! Church lays on the high notes too much, putting too much emphasis on them, and it's an annoyance! Her vowels are also flat on the high notes - I just hate it!

Dream a Dream is a very nice piece, leaning more towards the pop scene. Church still seems to make it work, and I would listen to it all day!

The Flower Duet is a beautiful song, but Church's vocals are strained, which makes it hard to listen to with a smile on your face! It's still beautiful!

The Prayer (w/ Josh Groban) is a very nice piece, originally sung by Celine Dion. She's still a little bit flat here!

All That Love can Be is sung beautifully, completely smooth and connected. The vocals are flawless and have a mezmerizing effect.

It's the Heart that Knows is a pop piece that Church sings with strong vocals. It's just showing us that she's ending her career as a classical superstar!

Tantum Ergo, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Sancta Maria, are all beautiful pieces!

I am a Charlotte Chruch fan, no doubt, but I really didn't like this album! I still wish that she would stay with opera, but I guess dreams don't come true! I wouldn't advise you to buy this CD - but as long as you have Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church (the Self Titled Album) and Enchantment, there's no need for this CD!

Sorry Charlotte!

5 out of 5 stars Charlotte Church.......2006-07-29

Love that voice!! This is a great CD and any one who had not heard this young lady sing should buy it and prepare for some musical enjoyment.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat decent but still mediocre.......2006-06-07

I am well aware of Charlotte's age. However, I am also aware of her amazing vocals and powerful range. But these things don't make you a good singer. Charlotte chose to stick to opera in most of her songs. And face it, not just anyone can do opera.

Charlotte's voice is very well trained - maybe too trained. From a very young age she's been hitting the same notes as Sarah Brightman. But I feel that Charlotte's over-worked and not to mention overdone voice has been declining tremendously.

But I guess none of this really matters now because I haven't heard her do anything classical for a while. If you want to listen to Charlotte now, go find the song 'Crazy Chick.'

If you want to listen to other angel voiced sopranos, I'd go with Sarah Brightman or Renee' Fleming.

2 out of 5 stars R&B For Charlotte .......2006-05-07

If a bird can be annoying as in a Rooster Crowing in the morning, some people will like it. A dog can bark in the nights we sleep, some People will like it. A human voice so light, so vibrated within their own dimensions, people will like it, but not I. I never really saw the beauty of opera, agitating to the ears, just like a Rooster calling on it's hens. With that said, Charlotte needs to turn to Blues Rock or R&B. Yes, Boogie style Blues Rock, she has the voice for it. No matter how many here perceive Opera or know what should sound good, no opera singer could ever sing Blues without a voice and a heart for it. Not One! So why should a girl with soulful music embedded in her, do the same? I say, "it's time to really Rock Charlotte!"

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

3 out of 5 stars English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Grace.......2003-01-30

Bravo! This CD, is such a great compilation of all Charl's albums. It's sort of sad though that this was a Prelude, to a different type of music.
However I think Charlotte is just so talented and she is getting better in every album I hear her. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD and DVD!.......2003-01-08

This is my first Charlotte cd and dvd. I wasn't really into this type of music but I work at a retail store and when I saw her cd fly of the shelf, I wanted to know what the fuss is all about so I bought this cd...and I'm glad I did. I also liked the dvd included. I was awed.

1 out of 5 stars too pretty too bad.......2002-12-27

This album is appropriately dubbed as greatest hits. Appropriately because, judging by how much the voice has deteriorated over the last 4 years, it's unlikely that we'll see more of Charlotte Church's albums. What's needed now is a skilled vocal coach who might (!) be able to restore Church's originally pretty soubrette soprano back to the way it sounded when "A voice of an angel" was recorded. Big labels, shame on you. A talent needs to be nurtured and brought up SLOWLY, so that it could first develop into something. By shamelessly exploiting Charlotte's adorable looks and youth, Sony executives have ruined a promising career before she could even develop into a real opera singer.
Charlotte, if you're reading this, STOP singing now and look for a good teacher. Or just be content as one of richest children in the world.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is SO good! A must for Charlotte Church fans!.......2002-12-20

This CD is filled with her best songs from all of her albums, including new ones. My favorite new ones are "It's The Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." They are all really good! It is the best! Go Charlotte!

This premiere recording of Martin's Lie (1964) is an engaging church opera for boy soprano and various adults, and a pleasant diversion from Menotti's more popular Amahl. The artful orchestrations enhance the musical drama, and the singing is strong. Connor Burrowes as Martin performs with sincerity and crisp diction, and the choruses are lovely. The two song cycles--Five Songs and Canti Della Lontananza--hold their own against popular American song cycles, but Howarth and Legatte won't establish careers as recitalists based on this recording. While both are in fine voice, their interpretations are one-dimensional, rendering the listener unable to decipher the intention of the texts. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

4 out of 5 stars If Boston Had A Sound, It Was Most Definitely Orpheus!.......2002-02-04

If you're looking to take an interesting audio trip back to the east coast in the late sixties and early seventies, buy "The Very Best of Orpheus" instead.

Most fans and music historians agree that Orpheus was without a doubt, the best thing to come out of the over hyped "Boston Sound" fiasco. Unfortunately, this CD includes only one of the many Orpheus songs that were in heavy rotation on national airwaves. In fact, with the exception of the pretentious Beacon Street Union track, "The Clown Died On Marvin Gardens", (penned by a painfully un-hip Wes Farrell), none of the other included tracks received even moderate airplay.

Unlike Orpheus, bands like Bagatelle, Ultimate Spinach, Beacon Street Union and Earth Opera found it nearly impossible to secure gigs outside of the occasional frat party or high school dance. I can remember seeing the Beacon Street Union play a pitiful set at a park in Rhode Island. The apologetic band members handed out free marijuana to convince the audience to stay. The scheme worked, but the other "Boston Sound" bands weren't so lucky. Both Ultimate Spinach and Earth Opera were regularly booed by audiences expecting to hear the more sophisticated music of Orpheus.

In response, producer and "Boston Sound" chief architect, Alan Lorber, employed a band called Chameleon Church, (an Orpheus knock-off featuring a young Chevy Chase), to tour southern universities posing as Orpheus! According to a 1988 Boston Globe interview with Chase, this was done to capitalize on Orpheus' growing popularity.

Interestingly, during this period, the real members of Orpheus had become darlings of the New York music scene and were trying in vain to sever all ties to the "Boston Sound". Unfortunately for them, the noise made by both the record label's hype and the moronic music of their stable mates was too loud to overcome. Perhaps the first casualty of guilt-by-association in the music industry, Orpheus lasted only three spectacular albums before the original band folded.

In 1971, Bruce Arnold, one of the group's founding members, went on to form a new Orpheus, which featured some of the New York studio musicians who played on the first three MGM albums. The resulting fourth album released on Bell Records is now widely considered to be a cult classic. All four albums are included on "The Complete Orpheus", which is also available on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars concise but not essential.......2002-01-07

this is a decent compilation of boston bands from the 60's. however, if you already have the 2cd set that came out 6 or 7 years ago, you will find much of this superfluous- there really is a lot of overlap between the two. the best songs that aren't on the former set are puff's CHANGES, the bead game's beatle esque SWEET MEDUSA (featuring early steely dan drummer jim hodder), and the impressive and actually kind of moving instrumental by ford theatre :"THEME FOR THE MASSES". This band put out a fine psychedelic album of the same name as well that hopefully will be issued on cd soon. The Earth Opera ( probably the best of the bosstown sound bands), Ultimate Spinach, Beacon Street Union tracks are all classics, as is the minor hit by Orpheus, even if it is kind of mellow baby boomer music and even if kings of yuppie rock hootie and the blowfish apparently have covered it. the rythym and blues of bagatelle and the jazz rock of eden's children are other highlights. this isn't great stuff by any stretch, but it is interesting . i'd have liked to see some better liner notes as these also repeat the earlier collection's..and this serves best as a starter for the fans of 60's rock...
the 5 best bosstown sound albums:
        1 earth opera-earth opera
        2. beacon street union-the eyes of the beacon street union.
        3. ultimate spinach-behold and see
        4. ultimate spinach-ultimate spinach
        5. beacon street union- the clown died in marvin gardens

Honorable mention: ford theatre-trilogy for the masses
        eden's children-eden's children
        EDEn's children-sure looks real
Chamaeleon church-chamaeleon church (arguably NOT a bosstown sound band)
earth opera-the great american eagle tragedy

4 out of 5 stars "light harmony with orchestral blending...soft rock was born.......2001-09-10

We're looking at the late '60s into the early '70s when music was taking another turn in their musical journey...listening to the radio you could hear the sounds and times changing...this album is justly named from the man who was at the helm ~ Alan Lorber, generated a new phrase "Boston Sound" (Boss-Town Sound).

Blends of folk, close harmony and loves song themes come through with each lyric...haunting, almost mesmirizing in content as you listen to each track..."OFF WITH THE OLD", by Chamaeleon Church would be a good example...entire gig of compilations is a blast, need this one for your collection, trust me!
