Customer Reviews:
the brightest of them all.......2007-02-09
I first heard Kim Taylor perform at the Southgate House in Newport, KY in early 2007. I was very impressed with her performance and tracked down So Black, So Bright a couple days later. It's a wonderful CD all the way through. It's well-written, beautifully sung, and manages to have a lot of soul for what is essentially a folk or singer-songwriter release. Everything here is genuine, heartfelt, and a pleasure to listen to.
In a world where Norah Jones can sell millions of CDs, there's no reason why Kim Taylor's releases shouldn't atleast go gold. Help her on her way and pick up a copy of So Black, So Bright. There's no way that you'll regret it.
(As of this writing, Amazon doesn't officially stock this CD. It is available, however, from a few third-party sellers. These people would have you believe that this is a rare release that merits a pricetag close to $40. This CD is actually readily available from Kim's website at a very reasonable price. It's not out-of-print, so don't pay those out-of-print prices.)
Wow!!.......2006-04-19
One of the great Cincinnati traditions is the yearly Over the Rhine concert. Each year Linford and Karin put on a great concert and almost always introduce us to a new artist. The 2005 concert brought us Kim Taylor. Well actually we saw Kim a few weeks earlier too for the Drunkard's Prayer release concert and my wife and I were so excited to Kim returned for the Christmas show.
If Kim doesn't become a major artist it won't be from lack of talent or showmanship. Her voice is velvet sweet but there's steel underneath. This woman can flat out sing! Her songs are wistful, haunting, and subtle. There aren't any riffs or choruses that immediately stick in the mind but they stick in the head anyway.
If you are a fan of Over the Rhine, Hem, or the Cowboy Junkies you'll love this album.
Haunting, amazing, beautiful.......2004-07-09
A really highly recommended album. Beautiful songs and haunting vocals.
The Voice Of An Angel....................2002-08-25
This girl has the voice of an angel and can play a guitar with the best. She is the one to watch in the 21st century....a rising star that will only get better. A beautiful talent has been discovered and she is on her way.
You go Kim....
Don't pass this one up.......2002-08-17
First off, I don't get much into independed music. I just don't have the patience to go to small clubs and bars to check people out, although they may be great. Well thankfully, Linford and Karin (of Over the Rhine) decided to bring Kim along to open some of their concerts last year. I heard Kim and was hooked. Amazed. She was just SO good! Very similiar in some ways to Over the Rhine in sound. But Kim's voice does have its differences, which make this album sort of Folk/Jazz (strange combination, but very succesfully done here). She has a small vibratto that is very jazzy. not opera vibratto, but jazz vibratto. And very subtle.
Lyrically, this woman's got it down! Although you may mistake her for over the Rhine on first listen, if you listen to the lyrics, you will hear a difference. She's not playing off OtR's success or style--she's making it her own with her additions. She's got her own style of writing, and it's great!
I really can't say enough about this album. I waited for almost a year for this album to be released, and I've certainly NOT been dissapointed in my purchase. Now I can't wait for her next album! If you pass this album up, you are only doing yourself a diss-service.

RUSSIAN VOCAL SCHOOL -- SHINES!.......2000-04-29
I first saw Elena in a video that was made during the late '70s, while the iron curtain was still down. She sang a SCALDING "O Don Fatale", making every other's version seem mediocre. That vision has never left me, and is continued here in an original recording from the Soviet Union. The songs are folk, with many "folk" orchestra songs as well. Together, Elena and the period orchestra combine forces to produce wonderful, exciting, dramatic and certainly magical sounds! "Dark-Browed, Dark-Eyed" is one of my personal favorites here. The tempo, along with Elena's tremendous vocals, add up to a spectacular feeling of energy. ALL of the songs show off her incredible chest register, and many can bring you close to tears. The sound is in real stereo, with better remastering that I had thought. There are SO few recordings of just ELENA, so this is a treasure to own. She must certainly be pleased as well.
Beautiful, and surprisingly decent recording quality.......2000-01-30
My favorite songs on this album are the folk songs, although all the songs are beautiful and wonderfully performed. They could do with a little less orchestral numbers, but they are also very nice. Elena Obraztsova is an exceptional singer.
