Often derided as "shoe-gazer" aesthetes, Stereolab's dirty little secret is that they're a lively, inventive, and surprisingly aggressive live band, and have been since their 1991 inception. These 32 tracks were recorded live in the studio for BBC radio hosts John Peel and Mark Radcliffe. The early songs have a garage-rock vibe; listeners are witness to the "groop" working through their influences, which they've never really tried to hide. "Anemie," for instance, is a Farfisa-fired homage to the Faust tune "Rainy Day." As the '90s progressed, the band's recording became more genteel and intricately arranged songs. But what some songs may lose in subtlety they make up for in force. Of particular note is 1996's 10-minute "Metronomic Underground," a jagged space-age/Afro-rock workout. Fans shouldn't hesitate to pick up ABC Music, while newcomers might consider it as a playful and raw retrospective of this innovative pop band's career. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous.......2007-05-21
This collection of live sessions from BBC Radio 1 is a fantastic retrospective of Stereolab's work from 1991-2001. They sound great throughout this two disc collection. Particular highlights for me include the extended jam on Metronomic Underground and, one of my favorite tracks from any group, Cybele's Reverie. If you are new to Stereolab, this is a great collection to give you a remedial course in their work throughout the 90's, while long time fans will surely enjoy these live recordings of old favorites. Clocking in with over two hours music, this is a good deal as well.
This is, in my opinion, the DEFINITIVE Stereolab output!!!.......2006-04-21
It has taken me a long time to get round to really connecting with this double CD workproduct from the famed Franco-British synthetic pop-music agitprop alternorock band. Ever since catching them live about ten years ago, I've considered them one of my favorite bands. I mean the live sound was so good that although I had long outgrown my penchant for ingesting mind altering substances, I caught myself longing for something really good to better enjoy the sound with AND even though I left that concert thinking it was one of the dem finest concert experiences I'd ever had--and I've attended dozens and dozens, of 'em--I still to this day wish I'd been there on a different plane of consciousness. It was just an indescribably good time. Having said that, I subsequently acquired three or four of their efforts, King Tomato Ketchup, Dot and Loops, Space Age Bachelor Music and perhaps another but they all got a couple of plays and then gathered dust. I got this double CD more from wishful thinking than from any expectations of taking aural pleasure from it. My first couple of play throughs more or less confirmed my worst expectations: just another another semi-repetitious Stereolab album with a few good bits, I thought. Then, about a year later for no reason or any reason at all I gave it another chance, by chance and you know what? It came alive for me. I have to say that this comp. of synthetic mongopopular radio frequency stage happiness is really quite good, and complete and definitely worth a purchase. If you've never heard Stereolab listen to the sample tracks above, I'm sure that they will give one a good idea of what they sound like. The music is kind of dreamy kind of funky kind of hokey kind of thoughtful kind of happy and often kind of demmed good. It is refreshing to find a band that one likes which does not sound like a whole bunch of other bands. In fact, if I were to make a comparison of Stereolab to another band I would have to compare it to a band that I haven't heard yet. This album is definitely a long term keeper.
Great Studio Sounding Live Cd .......2005-11-13
If you're a Stereolab fan then this is an outstanding double disc of "live" John Peel session cuts featuring for the most part cuts from Switched On, Peng, Emperor Tomato Ketchup and Mars Audio Quintet. Probably the most interesting aspect of the cd is that it sounds more like an alternative studion cuts compilation than it does a live cd and in fact unless you know beforehand that the cuts are indeed live you'd really have no idea. Definitely worth picking up even if you own most of the original releases.
Buenisimo.......2003-07-19
Acabo de recibir este trabajo que esta estupendamente maravilloso, Letitia alcanza un nivel maximo con su banda y logra emitir esa energia pura que tiene!
Muy bueno para escuchar con una buena compañia y un buen acompañamiento extra para la torre!
Outstanding Stereolab!.......2003-07-12
This is now my favorite Stereolab album! Fans of Stereolab will love this! For folks new to Stereolab, this is a great place to start! This is high-energy pop with strong, steady, and hypnotic rhythms and nice harmonies. Certainly an "essential" Stereolab CD.

I've only listened to Jason Mraz because that's the only reason I bought it. He is absolutely amazing. I haven't heard him do "Unravel," A Bjork cover, or "Plain Jane," but they are both excellent. "The Boy's Gone" is also a great track.

Inspiral.......2004-07-06
A good example of fresh music, quality, and good taste that always come from england dark music. A little hard at first impresion, maybe coz the permanent up-sound of the hammond, but is a good opportunity to hear inspiral with direct sound played at one take.

Customer Reviews:
WARNING! This material is duplicated on another release!.......2002-10-10
Be careful when you order this CD as it is EXACTLY the same concert as the 4th disc of XTC's "Transistor Blast" album. If you have that collection, you don't need this!
While it is indeed a great concert, the other material on "Transistor Blast" is worth owning, so I suggest you buy that one instead.
Varoooooooooom!.......2002-05-17
It's amazing that XTC could make such a great live album, when you recall that they had to stop touring due to Andy Partridge's overwhelming stage fright--and that led, directly, to their Beatles-like transformation from a charming and energetic live act to an ingenious and imaginitive studio group.
Don't waste time. Get this LP. American radio ignored XTC, their American label botched their promotion, and the result was that the band, despite it's best efforts, has withered on the vine. This record is one of several highlights from a career that you shouldn't have missed.
All the Hits and More..........2002-04-15
With XTC's back catalogue now consisting to 99% of compilations and demo versions, it is quite clear that the band is content to pursue its relationship with its small but keen and devoted fanbase. Those of you who have not heard XTC before, would do best to check out their late 70s-early 80s output, a period when the band was a relevant, creative and era-defining musical force alongside more established artists such as Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. This kind of music is generally described sing words like "poppy", "quirky", "quintessentially English", etc. And it is. But, XTC are not really that far removed from US alternative rock acts like Toad the Wet Sprocket, Sixpence None the.....Weezer, Three O'Clock, Elliot Smith. Music that owes more to Beatles, Beach Boys and Noel Coward than Elvis Presley and Motown.
This BBC live album a essential for lots of reasons: you get the band at its very peak (1980) and the songs are played with incredible energy but there's a still a crystal clear sound, a great atmosphere (it's like you're there) not to mention blistering live versions of Life Begins at the Hop, Making Plans for Nigel and This is Pop. As a seasoned XTC fan I love this record, but I heartily recommend it to lovers of good guitar pop in general.
The Best.......2001-12-16
To those who didn't catch them live . . .well, this is the best substitute. . .
Never had so much fun seeing them live
GREAT LIVE.......2001-06-29
Alas, I was primed to see XTC in 1982 at the Hollywood Palladium. Excitement shivering through my entire body when the show was cancelled due to Andy's illness (as we all know now was intense stage fright). Little did I know at the time that would be the end of touring for XTC, but at least this c.d makes up for never having seen them live. Great c.d!

Best mix of live music.......2005-06-25
When I bought this album so long back it was on a whim... so glad I did. I was very sad when the volume 2 was sold out before I could get a copy. Indigo Girls are awsome, and most of the other songs on this album are 10 times better than the actual released songs. It is an album I would never part with.

Customer Reviews:
Great music from a live band.............2004-09-14
From "One color" to "Rebel Radio", this is a solid band from one end of the spectrum to the other. Keyboards, horns, vocals, and turntables are masterfully handled. All though UBO is no longer as large a band has they were on earlier release's the quality of the music hasn't changed at all. This music is the result of influences from Bristol, Cuba, India, and wherever their inspiration takes them.
Enhanced CD.......2001-02-19
Well, I was expecting a CD with some great music, and I got that. I wasn't expecting video and a book along with it, but I got those too.
The CD is a combination of some great Brixton style UB&O music, along with several tracks of great Havana style Cuban descarga. I suppose the presentation is supposed to evoke radio--different styles of music being presented side by side. Though the musical styles are quite different, since I like both it fits together well enough.
The CD also contains video which can be viewed on a PC. There are three Quicktime videos, set to music from the CD, containing film from the recording sessions in Cuba, the streets, and archival film, all edited together and set to music. There is some text that hangs over the borders and overlays the video's edges which I could have done without, but nevertheless this is probably one of the only "enhanced" CDs I have seen that I would put in my computer more than once.
The CD also came shrink-wrapped with a book, which is a sort of travelogue by Rupert Mould, describing his trip to Cuba to make this album, and it is a good read as well.
All in all, I got much more than I bargained for with this CD, and I'm quite pleased with the second helping.
Dosen't get much better than this.......2000-07-19
This is a cd that can take you places, which is not at all a surprise. UB&O has a great talent in the way that they make more than just songs. I can put on the disc and just sit back for hours... The mixture of classic cuban themes with hip-hop and jazz (and basicly all kinds of genres) makes some consider this cd an experiment, but I would say it is just evolution... And with the whole story behind the music and making of the cd, it makes for a great trip.

Bristol, England's eclectic electronicists Up, Bustle and Out traveled to Havana, Cuba, to collaborate with the Orquesta Richard Egües. Flautist and pianist Egües has been a leading figure in Cuban bands for decades, and formed his own group in 1984. The results are fascinating, but not particularly a blend of Cuban music with electronica--it's more like flipping around the dial in some city where all the radio stations are cool. The first two tracks, "The Educators" and "Hip Hop Barrio--Who's Gonna Take the Weight" are fueled by Up, Bustle and Out's trademark groove-organ funk, with guest sax on the former and a mixture of sampled emcee shouts and a spoken interlude on the latter. Egües's group takes over the next two tracks--"Los Locos Cubanos" is a short percussion workout and "Mami" is a straight-ahead Cuban salsa number with a four-man vocal lineup, lilting piano rhythms, and Egües's breezy flute.
Another change of gears follows as two tracks of stripped-down funk drumming provide the underpinning for "Kennedy's Secret Tapes," which incorporates various Cuban Missile Crisis-era spoken-word snippets and guest Keith Warrington's bluesy harmonica on "Rebel Satellite." The Orquesta returns for a few more tracks. Former Up, Bustle collaborator Martin Genge recites a poetic evocation of "Havana's Streets" over a Fender Rhodes piano, there's a not too compelling Smith and Mighty remix, and the CD closes with a nice breakbeat and flamenco guitar piece and a short sound collage. Fans of Up, Bustle and Out's type of stylistic boundary-pushing are sure to be pleased with the CD, but listeners mainly interested in the more traditional Cuban sounds might find the variety a bit distracting. --Bob Bannister
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully relevant Cuban / Latin infused Trip-Hop.......2004-03-22
Up, Bustle & Out, are probably one of the `Ninja Tune' labels less known & more eclectic acts. Taking Cuban music as its starting point, and working traditional Cuban/Latin songs that frequently reference `The Buena Vista Social Club' in sound and structure. They are effectively selling glorious south America music to Trip-Hop fans, so Tracks such as "Los Locos Cubanos / Por Eso Quiero" could all make the Buena vista album, and the furious flamenco guitar of "Carbine 744, 520... Che Guevara" possibly surpasses it. But not completely forgetting their Trip-Hop tag, there are several highly polished Trip-Hop tracks ("Hip Hop Barrio-Who's Going to Take the weight / Havana's Streets"), that still reference South America's dusty grooves. Admittedly anyone expecting Trip-Hop in the style of `The Herbaliser / Dj Food" or "Amon Tobin" is going to be startled, but this is fantastically expressive tapestry of South American music given a slightly western touch, and so long as your prepared to experience something completely different from the usual Trip-Hop fare, this is a gloriously compelling fusion of two distinctly different genres.
Let it take you.......2002-03-16
I don't know if the Cuban thing really has much to do with it. I have two other UBO cd's and they're not far off. This one though...Groovy, eclectic rhythmic & raw. All the elements are here. This is the one that feels the most cohesive. Kick back and enjoy.
Up, Better, Best.......2000-07-22
Words can not do this album justice. I agree with everything Corey Carpenter had to say in his review. This album comes together like few others ever have. It will put you in your living room with some beautiful Arabian princesses, watching the Spanish sun setting outside your window, while your glass of California cabernet keeps magically getting refilled. It is smooth, midtempo music that defies any particular genre - a little soul, a little chill-out, a little latin, and little jazz, a little acoustic instrumentation. Very cool and very fresh. Worth every penny. Yes, spread the word indeed.
Buy it! Buy it! Buy it! Heck, buy it three times!.......2000-07-13
This is by far UBO's best stuff. The record stays with a consistent Cuban theme throughout, something UBO hasn't done too well with on their other releases (mish-mash of Indian, latin, rap, etc.). The beats are the smoothest and easiest listening Ein's ever done, and the Cuban songs are magnificent!
Senor Roody is a god! He is single-handedly changing the face of the music world, and noone is really listening. So spread the word!
