Album Description
Falls, the second "RF" CD from Ryan Francesconi, picks up where Interno left off offering 14 new tracks (over 60 minutes) of electronic acoustica. Featuring singers Lily Storm and Moira Smiley, Falls has the feeling of songs patiently crafted and of unrushed pacing. While moments of the cd have ambient Greek countryside field recordings, other moments feature elaborate string arrangements and Francesconi's own style of melodic guitar work and software manipulations. Falls is an emotional work that conveys feelings of travel and the slipping of the seasons.

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02

I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.

My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.

I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15

The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.

4 out of 5 stars Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13

Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!

5 out of 5 stars Better Every Time.......2007-05-09

This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.

It's been more than 20 years since pianist Harold Budd's first full collaboration with guitarist Robin Guthrie's former group, the Cocteau Twins, on The Moon and the Melodies. Primed by their atmospheric collaboration on the score to Mysterious Skin, they pick up where they left off, sans the voice of Elizabeth Fraser, on a pair of matched CDs, After the Night Falls and Before the Day Breaks. Guthrie lays down his signature deep-echo guitar arpeggios and shimmering electric glissandos while Budd drops piano notes, each placed with the elegance and thought of a Zen garden. The latter, whose 2005 retirement appears to have been greatly exaggerated, has lately been stripping away the electronics and making an introspective solo piano music, often born from melodic fragments and languid improvisations. It's nice to hear them framed by Guthrie in an electric gossamer where melodies flutter like tattered cobwebs in the echoing wind. So it's not surprising that some tracks have a tendency to vaporize. Songs with a bit of grounding like "Seven Thousand Sunny Years," with its spare rhythm track and refracting guitars, tend to hold up a little better, while "My Monochrome Vision" just wanders into the drone zone. Of the two albums, After the Night Falls is more structured and formed, although Budd and Guthrie do wait until the last track of Before the Day Breaks to unleash a welcome slice of contrasting aggression with "Turn on the Moon." Totaling 81 minutes between them, I'm not sure why the albums couldn't have been condensed into a single disc, making a tighter, less diffuse statement. Yet both have more than enough moments of sublime melancholy and deep ruminations to provide a soundtrack for that long lonesome film in your mind. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars Another great album from Guthrie and Budd.......2007-07-14

This album doesn't seem to cover any new territory that the two haven't done before either together or solo. It's a good listen however. Some of the guitar bits bring back fond memories of Guthrie's work 10 years ago. Overall it's a good addition to your collection. If you're a newbie to the pair, it's an excelent introduction.

5 out of 5 stars bliss.......2007-06-25

I have been a long time fan of the cocteau twins for quite some time. I was also introduced to harold budd when the twins collaberated with him on The moon and the melodies. As far as iam concerned, robin and harold are the perfect duo. Their music weaves together like beautiful tapestry. This is ambient music at its best. After the night falls is the best out of the two disc, but both of them are a must for any fan of both the artist.

5 out of 5 stars Night falls on Budd and Guthrie..and they made a great record........2007-06-21

I'll keep this as brief as possible. I am a long time Harold Budd fan. I own most his albums and have at the least, heard them all. I was a fan of the Cocteau Twins when I was younger, owning at one time most of their work, seeing them in concert once even,... but not so much a fan today as much as Budd. I've owned a copy of the Frasier,Guthrie,Budd collaboration"Moon and Melody" for years, but never heard of a Guthrie/Budd collaboration before,... these were re-released apparently. Now these two sister albums between Robin Guthrie-(CT's guitarist) and Harold Budd, I purchased. They are both great, but I write the review on the Night Falls album, because it is the better of the two, which is saying allot! Simply a truly unique and ambient record. The pieces are separate and stand each on their own, in a singular way. In other words, they are all rather different from each other in approach, but all work well. If you are a Harold Budd fan, you'll love it. If your a Cocteau Twins fan, be warned that Elizabeth Frasier is absent from these records. and they are not like Moon and the Melody, at all..more Budd influenced and slower, but well worth the money regardless. Guthrie's playing is wonderful, spiritual, and interesting throughout.
A sound buy all around for fans of the 4 AD label and Budd's work with them .

Beautifully crafted and produced, When It Falls is a fitting follow-up to Zero 7's 2001 platinum hit Simple Things. Reintroducing several of their debut's guest vocalists, the band continue to meld subtle orchestration, elegant jazz and easy-going West Coast soul and folk, creating a sound so tasteful it makes Morcheeba sound like Napalm Death. The album opens with the appropriately titled "Warm Sound," where long-time collaborator Mozez delivers his spacey soul over a quivering flute and funky keys. Later he reappears for the string-swept lullaby "Over Our Heads." Next up is newcomer Tina Dico who lends the softest of vocals to "Home," where quietly chiming guitars rise to a careful collision of brass, and "The Space Between," a techno-update of 70s folk-jazz. Much the same service is provided by Sophie Barker on "Passing By" and "In Time," which recalls the sweet innocence of early James Taylor. It's left to Sia Furler to add extra color, her slight rasp lending character to both "Somersault" and "Speed Dial No 2." Throughout, the band introduce a welter of instruments and effects, sometimes approaching the psychedelic, though they're keen to avoid an over-technological coldness--the squeak of finger on guitar string is never far away. For fans of Simple Things, it's a real treat. --Dominic Wills

5 out of 5 stars If your a fan of Zero7............2007-07-05

I put it in and I was hoping it sounded like the Zero7 I love, and it did. I play it all the time and get compliments from people who have no idea who the band is. Zero7 is a staple for me to bring life back into perspective when things get a little hectic.

5 out of 5 stars "When It Falls" Lifts You Up.......2007-05-15

The helmsmen of Zero 7, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, got their start engineering and mixing music for groups like Pet Shop Boys, Radiohead, and Sneaker Pimps. Their ear for sweet soul sounds and eye for under-produced trip-hop enticed a host of collaborators to join them for their debut album, Simple Things, an almost unreal work of chillout genius that has since gone platinum.

Their sophomore work, "When It Falls," features some of the same voices found on the first record, as well as all of that record's gentle genius. Bittersweet and beautiful, "When It Falls" shows us that even the softest blow can pack a whallop.

This record's delicate notes blow from winds of change, moving music that is mostly about the beautifully dear delerium to be found both in change and in remaining watchfully still. Tina Dico's delicate vocals color gold and red the autumnal ballads of "Home" and "The Space Between." Sia Furler croons gold summer spirit into the over-green forests of "Somersault" and "Speed Dial No. 2." Mozez's yearning voice gives sweet sap to the springtime blooms of "Warm Sound" and "Morning Song." And the incomparable Sophie Barker chills the soul with her wintery whispers in the dark and delightful "Passing By" and "In Time." It's a pastiche of passions, a rainbow arc of moods, the colorful shattering point between stormy rains and nourishing sun.

An album that strikes the heart without resorting to cheese, that celebrates the sensuality of sorrow and the tug of joy, "When It Falls" proves that maybe the man was right when he sang "everything is beautiful in its own way." At any rate, if anything's beautiful, it's this album.

5 out of 5 stars It will change you.......2007-03-18

This album is responsible for turning my musical taste in a different direction. After years of banging my head to the loudest, fastest, and darkest death metal, I discovered it was giving me a headache.
A freind loaned me this ZERO7 CD, and after the last track had played, I knew I had found a new genre to call home.
If you can listen to this CD without replaying any of the tracks at least once, it would be a first. The artist's voices, the instruments, and the rythems take you on a winding road that you'll want to travel over and over again. I have now listened to this CD for over a year now, and whenever I pop it into the CD player, it still feels like I'm coming home. Instead of headaches, I find myself totally relaxed. (You can't review a ZERO7 album without using the word "relax").

5 out of 5 stars Rainbow of sounds and colors.......2006-12-26

For fans of new age and soothing, interesting and innovative music Zero 7 fits the bill perfectly. This British band and its style are classified as Downtempo, Trip hop, Ambient music and as Acid jazz, to me they are simply a big mish mash of goodness.

The first time that I listened to this album was while soaking in a hot tub with herbal bath salts. I don't know what melted the stress off my bones better, the hot water or the music, reaching deep within. I was mesmerized, especially the first time I heard the song "Somersault", the music, part ambient, with soft female vocals and melancholic undertones stood out to me in a sea of songs in a long time. The music is cool and relaxing, soothing and warm, sensual and dreamy and still a bit funky. I can always rely on Zero 7 and the magic their sounds produce whether I'm tired or lazy or in the mood for good reading or writing music.

Some songs are sang by men and some by women, a nice combination as they make for a more interesting cd versus those that sound like a constant sting of melody barely changed by any dynamics. Since they use different artists in collaboration on each cd, blending their style with the artists own uniqueness creates a whole new level of higher expectation that always comes through when you buy their CD's.

Related artists for those unfamiliar wth Zero 7 or those who want more of this style would be Air, Thievery Corportaion, Massie Attack, Morcheeba, Tosca, Royksopp, Radiohead, Moby, Underworld, Goldfrapp and Apex Twin just to name a few.

This album is great for taking a bath, getting a massage or simply sitting down with a nice hot beverage and melting stress and winter chills away. Totally beautiful and dearly loved by me, it's one of those albums I would buy for every person I know if I needed a good present in a pinch.

- Kasia S.

4 out of 5 stars Enter The Chill-Zone.......2006-12-18

I'm relatively new to certain styles of music; but I do experiment from time to time and check out new genres and bands. Zero 7 was recommended to me by a couple of people, so I picked up "When It Falls", and have been very pleased with the results.....

Zero 7 play a very spacey, stylish and mood-altering form of ambient techno that is very alluring and relaxing. Paired with a variety of singers (who mostly croon in a breathless, low-key manner) this album features washes of sound and atmosphere accentuated with mellow guitar passages here and there, and is very textural in it's approach. It sounds a bit like Enya meets Moby. Excellent chill-out music when you need to relax and kick back after a long day at work. I'm interested in hearing more from this band.

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-03-31

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V).......2007-06-21

product: Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V), included as bonus disc in Episode III soundtrack.

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

5 out of 5 stars John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

2 out of 5 stars Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

ALO, or Animal Liberation Orchestra, sound like a bunch of hippies. These hippies are totally cool!

This is a surprisingly good CD. It's a re-release now on Jack Johnson's Brushfire label, so you know it's good. Jack even guests on the second track.

The music is very chill and laidback, but a little more uptempo than Jack Johnson. It has a little funky groove to it.

Although it does have some rather stupid lyrics at times, the music more than makes up for it. This is a really cool cd, perfect for hanging out. Recommended.

Guitarist Pat Metheny and his longtime keyboard collaborator/alter ego Lyle Mays saw in their rural American roots a mystical connection to an entire world of sounds, and with As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls, they began the process of fashioning an idiomatic folk expression all their own. With the help of master percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, they create a whistlestop tour of musical outposts on the extended title track that is at once gothic and atmospheric in the manner of Weather Report, bucolic and harmonious like the Byrds--with echoes of small towns, strip malls, and lonely railyards, over expanses of wide-open space that reflect their familial origins and countless miles wandering the interstate on a string of college-town one-nighters. In the four square major modes of "Ozark" and "It's for You" you can hear the beige tinge of the American experience that melded with African American music to give the U.S. its musical depth and breadth, while "September Fifteenth" is a prayerful, ruminative reflection on the spirit of their romantic forebear, pianist Bill Evans. --Chip Stern

5 out of 5 stars 38, 42, 55, 3.......2007-04-01

I adore this album. It's so deep, mysterious, and moving I even used a snippet of the title track in a student film I once did. I don't think Pat Metheny is ever really given the credit as a great jazz musician that he deserves. His music is extraordinarily ethereal and almost other worldy, and some narrow minded people mistake this for new age music, or worse, elevator, Kenny G style music, which is absurd. I doubt that Kenny G or John Tesh would create something like the epic title track here. The title track is one of the most majestic pieces of music I ever heard, almost like a concerto or a really complex prog rock piece. The song Ozark is a lot lighter than the rest of the album, but it's still really good. September 15th is wonderful, with amazing piano work by Lyle Mays, Metheny's frequent colloborator. "It's for You" is nice, and the album's closer is quite moving and simple. The title of the album is almost one of the more memorable titles in history. This, along with Offramp, 80/81, Song X, and Beyond the Missouri Sky, are my favorite Metheny albums.

5 out of 5 stars Apocalyptic Metheny.......2007-01-12

I first discovered Pat Metheny when hearing "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" on a radio jazz program in university. My friend and I were laying on our living room floor with the lights out when this 18 minute song came on and totally freaked us out. I always interpreted it as some sort of apocalyptic warning or something. There was a lot of it in those days. But my friend and I never forgot it and bought the album the next day. It's taken me a long time to get the CD but I enjoy it just as much.

Of course the title track doesn't give you any idea of how awesome a guitarist Metheny is. The second side does however, but not as much as some of his other albums like "Offramp". But there are some very interesting melodic tracks on this album, from the ultimate driving song "Ozark", to the meditative "September 15th". All around, a great and unusual album.

5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2006-08-14

Just the most heartfelt Metheny music I've ever heard. Being a longtime fan, I was delighted to hear some of this music on the soundtrack of the movie FANDANGO, with Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson. I especially loved their use of "It's For You" during the wedding. And "September Fifteenth" always brings me to tears.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this album 10 stars!.......2006-07-18

Okay, I am only 15 years old, and perhaps I am biased because my dad used to play this CD for me all the time growing up. Even so, I feel that this album is a group of timeless songs I'll like always and forever. It's hard to say exactly "why" i guess...every song is so beautiful, I don't need many words to describe them. They can speak for themselves. I plan to share this CD with all my friends and pass it along to my children because I hope they will appreciate the great instrumental work that went into these peices. One thing I do wonder is how you can say its "boring" or that you "just don't get them". I mean, I respect your opinion but...I will always stand behind my great love of Pat Metheny. Especially As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls.

2 out of 5 stars I tried, I really tried.......2006-05-05

I was playing some ultra-hyper Ursula 1000 the other night when my wife said, "Could you please play something mellow?" I know I had listened to AFWSFWF before and thought then what I'm about to write now, after having these thoughts confirmed last night.

AFWSFWF sounds like a half-baked movie score, I don't know how else to describe it. I don't know what is is about the "epic' Metheny works. I just don't get them, neither all their supposed "profundity" or musical "briliance." They bore me. I can't finish them. They take themselves too seriously such that I want to scream, "Lighten up!" Ok, wow, so you mixed some Asian-sounding guitar, a steady drumbeat, some somnolent piano respites, Pink Floyd like voices in the background and other "noise." Folks, I'm out, nocturnally. Nightie-night, sleep tight.

1 out of 5 stars Not for fans of the music in the movie ... .......2007-07-21

Sure, maybe some of the songs in this collection were tacked on in edited forms into the closing credits, but the majority of the music in the film is not here. Great tracks by Rachid Taha (off his Made in Medina album) figure prominently through out and aren't here. Jasmine Tabatabai not only contributes a memorable song to the film, but can be seen performing it live in an early club scene. Also not on the cd.

If you like the darker, richer, exotic music of the film, pick up albums by Taha and Tabatabai.

If you like mediocre compilations of absolutely horrifying covers of once great songs (I actually got physically ill hearing the versions of Venus in Furs and Killing Moon) then maybe pick this up.

The one or two decent tracks (ok, one) like Collide's just aren't worth the buy in.

The art of soundtracking and film scoring has reached an all time low here.

5 out of 5 stars This album is way better than the film..........2007-02-03

Since the first review focused on what they didn't know about the bands, I'll point out some of the acts:

Tre Lux is Tina Root of Switchblade Symphony, one of the biggest Dark Wave bands of the 90's.

Shiny Toy Guns are huge right now, just played Leno a month ago.

Collide are one of the bigger bands of the goth/electro scene.

Bow Wow Wow...even the other reviewer knew who they are.

Sparklemotion had a hit on itunes from the Napoleon Dynamite Sountrack.

New Skin are a new English band produced by one of the guys who produced Depeche Mode and the Cure.

but whatever - the point is the album is really good - there's only one song I wasn't crazy about and for a soundtrack, that's saying a lot.

I can't say the same for the film...but oh well.

2 out of 5 stars Yet Another 80's Mostly Lame New Wave Cover Song Collection by Mostly Unknowns.......2007-01-28

I get the impression that cover song collections are quite the rage in Hollywood Movie circles when dealing with 'troubled' movie productions. It's cheap in that all the artists cannot command any upfront cash for their appearance. It smacks of indy-cred to get these artists, mostly electro-goth types, together. Too bad most of the cover versions are only mildly interesting. I also suspect that the soundtrack CD will be of more interest in a years time than the movie will...Why the producers of the film decided to so radically transform the book into a forced-copy of 'Underworld' escapes me, I guess filming for so cheap in Eastern Europe was the main reason. Too bad, I really enjoyed the book. Buy the book instead of buying this CD or watching the movie.

Except for Bow Wow Wow (glad to see they are struggling along still, but this IS DEFINITELY NOT their best work), almost all of these bands are probably unknown to 99.99% of the listening public. I have heard of Collide before this, kinda synthy darkwave band, very enjoyable, please go buy their other work ;) Almost of these songs lack the excitement and punch of the originals, why bother then making effort? I guess if I must, the first three songs are pleasant enough to listen to and I kind of like the Collide number as well...The rest can be safely deleted if you decide to convert these tracks to MP3s and just keep the aforementioned four tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Grand Grofé.......2007-07-13

What a fabulous collection of the best of Grofé conducted by the composer himself. If there is a better recording of any of these selections, I have not heard it and I have heard many.

5 out of 5 stars The Treasures of Ferde Grofé.......2007-03-27

Ferde Grofé, born in the late 19th century New York, had a varied musical career as a composer, arranger, and pianist. He was a performer and arranger for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and later arranged Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" for orchestra. Best known as a composer for "Grand Canyon Suite," his style combined classical, jazz and Hollywood cinematic styles in a series of unique "paintings" that managed to evoke the images that his sounds represented.

This collection from Naxos includes the aforementioned "Grand Canyon Suite," as well as his lesser known "Mississippi Suite" and "Niagara Falls Suite." All are quite moving, although "Grand Canyon" is far and away his most brilliant. Niagara displays a fine range of images and moods, from the power of the waters themselves to the cinematic lyricalism of honeymooners.

The quality of the CD is excellent. I have been quite pleased with the quality of their releases. William Stromberg and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra capture the essence of these wonderful compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Majestic!.......2002-10-14

Probably everyone with any familiarity with American classical composers has heard at least some of the "Grand Canyon Suite" at some point, but the other two suites on this CD (the "Mississippi" and the "Niagara Falls") may not be quite so familiar. They should be, and this version is a splendid (and inexpensive) way to own them. I bought the CD chiefly because I had heard of the "Mississippi" and wanted to find out what it was like. It is a fine piece of music, with much of the rolling expansiveness of the Big River captured in it. And the "Niagara Falls" ranges from Native motifs that will be familiar to all TV-Western buffs, to the Gershwinesque. Of course, there's no need to describe the centerpiece. I've always loved the kind of music that lifts you out of your seat, and all these pieces do.

If this is a typical Naxos product, I'm sure I'll be adding a lot more of them to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Programmatic music at its finest!.......2002-01-20

Ferde Grofé's mastery of the orchestral palette is breathtaking. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his seminal work, the GRAND CANYON SUITE. This work portrays 24 hours of contrasting moods in America's most famous natural habitat, from the stillness of morning in "The Painted Desert" to the thunder of a rare nighttime "Cloudburst." No matter what time of day, you may feel as if the sky is brighter after listening to "Sunrise." One can sense the demeanor of the donkey forced to make the journey "On the Trail." I always feel the regret of another day passing during "Sunset."

The other two orchestral suites on this CD are also great, but they simply do not compare to the majesty of the GRAND CANYON. The MISSISSIPPI SUITE is a short four-movement exploration of Americana along the great river. The NIAGARA FALLS SUITE is overwhelming in its portrayal of the power of the Falls, enhanced by the quiet sections of the inner movements.

Like me, you may be a bit leery of purchasing a CD from a budget label featuring artists and ensembles of whom you've never heard. Rest assured, this CD is a bargain that you will not regret purchasing. I have never been disappointed with a NAXOS CD, and both the Bournemouth Symphony and William T. Stromberg are excellent. Stromberg, a native Californian and only 34 years old at the time of this recording, lends a sensitivity to the quiet passages and incredible zest and energy to the dynamic passages, most notably to the NIAGARA FALLS SUITE.

5 out of 5 stars Another "new" work by Ferde Grofe!.......2000-12-11

The close of the last century was a good time for the late American composer Ferde Grofe, with two never-before-recorded works popping up on CD! I refer to "Broadway at Night," recorded by the Beau Hunks, and "Niagra Falls Suite," the last and best performed of the three suites featured on this CD.

The sound quality is quite good, with a sufficiently spacious balance. While the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's versions of the "Grand Canyon" and "Mississippi" suites are merely competent, its dramatic and robust presentation of "Niagra" is an unforgettable listening experience. The piece is great escapist fare, mild in intent but brilliantly written and orchestrated. The asking price amounts to a giveaway, so don't miss out on this one!

I've loved Freddy's style since I first heard him back in the seventies. His versions of Secret Love and Roses are Red are the best. I really love the Spanish versions after the English and vice-versa. Freddy is a real Mexican-American treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2001-01-04

Before the Next Teardrop Falls; Wasted Days and Wasted Nights; Roses Are Red; I have so many memories of sitting in the back seat of the car and singing along in my best Freddy Fender voice. Drove dad crazy, but those songs and Freddy's unique voice remind me of some of the most special times in life. It may be a Southwest thing, but this music gets into your soul and on these songs I feel like I am feeling part of Fender's soul as well. If you've never listened, REALLY listened, to Freddy Fender, give him a chance!
