About the Artist
Born and raised in Germany's Black Forest, Max - who's also known as Holger Hubertus Hoetzel - came to the United States in the late 1980's. A banjo player since his teenage years, Max's professional focus during much of the 80's and 90's has been as a writer and photographer. He published coffee-table books on Route 66, Diners, Drive-Ins and Motels and he created an award-winning CD-ROM about Route 66, before he turned his focus again to his first love - the banjo. Since the late 1990's he has been a constant presence at California's Topanga Banjo & Fiddle contest, which he won three consecutive years.
Album Description
Max plays banjo. Be assured, you've never heard the banjo like this before: Straight-up rock 'n roll (Prince of Peace), heartbreaking ballads (This River), cinematic mood-setters (The Black Riders, Fleck in Transit), funky takes on old fiddle music (Mon's Groove, Cattle in the Gravy) - with grace and ease Max's banjo seduces all of these styles, and finds its place straight in their heart. The backdrop for this musical fusion is unmistakably America - its result true Americana as seen through the eyes of a European expatriate. For his first outing as a solo artist MAX has assembled a stellar cast of musicians: Saxophone-legend David Sanborn British Pop-Icon Rick Astley, Yellowjacket Jimmy Haslip, Elton John-guitar player Davey Johnstone, Cellist Martin Tillman, fiddler Gabe Witcher, multi-instrumentalist Jonas Krag, drummer Hilary Jones, harmonica-master Jimmy Z., EVI-player Judd Miller - all contributed to an eclectic and electrifying musical experience.

Family music bonding.......2006-07-18
My two boys (age 2 and 7) LOVE this CD. We play it almost on a daily basis and they dance around all over the house to it. After a year, it still has this effect to them. Their favorite track is the 2nd one. I rarely get to listen to the whole CD through before they are jumping around asking for "TRACK 2! TRACK 2!"
This is by far my (our) favorite Putumayo compilation!
A cocktail party for the ear.......2006-06-14
I received this CD as a gift from my younger sister&I STILL enjoy it.It's worth every listen.
This CD kicked off Putumayo's Lounge series, giving it an auspicious start. There are tracks I enjoy more than others, but it isn't a weak album;there aren't fillers. The best tracks are those by Pink Martini,Nicola Conte,Jasmon,Mo'Horizons,Gotan Project,Hamid Baroudi,Montefiori Cocktail,Arling&Cameron, and Blue Asia.Mau Mau&Dissidenten aren't my favorites;as you can see,99% of the CD is pure perfection.
The music uses a variety of styles.Nicola Conte,Jasmon,as well as Arling&Cameron use Bollywood as inspiration."Shiva's Daughters" is loveably cheesy.Hamid Baroudi&Blue Asia make haunting Middle Eastern melodies.Mo'Horizons&Gotan Project have more Latin flavors.Montefiori Cocktail turns a Brazilian bossa nova tune into kitschy bliss.Pink Martini from Portland,Oregon (being from Oregon,I'm proud of them)gives a nod to chanson.
This CD is intoxicating;it's a musical margarita.
Great CD for Variety and Fun Listening.......2006-05-25
I have had this CD for a while and I really enjoy it. I actually play it quietly in the background when I teach Pilates and the class LOVES it....every time I use it at least one person comments on my "great" music...I always share the title with them. Great music is meant to be shared!!
Definitely recommend.......2005-09-02
Putamayo always puts out great albums, and this one has a great beat, especially good in the background when you have people over.
Great music.......2005-04-17
Putumayo's "World Lounge" had only one drawback, as does their other CDs, and that's that it's too short. This CD spans around an hour, with 11 songs, and I think that's way too short for a compililation like this. That aside, this is a great CD, filled with some of the biggest stars and Hits of Europe and Asia. If you're not a fan of HouseBeats or Techno, I don't recommend you purchase this. If, however, you are, then buy away!

Album Description
Their second album on Blue Corn contains more than the usual share of songs about current events. In 2005, the Lizards were commissioned to write five songs for various consumer advocacy groups. "The Drugs I Need" tackles the prescription drug industry, "The Tower" concerns the monopolization of big media, "Christmastime For Visa" takes on credit card debt, "Go Ahead And Die" is about health insurance, and "Toast The Earth" is concerned with a boycott of Exxon/Mobil. All five songs are on this release and they've been paired with hilarious animation, available for viewing on the Internet. "The Drugs I Need" is featured on Jib Jab and is one of the site's most popular numbers. Other songs here feature gospel-tinged tunes, a bilingual Tex Mex tune, a Les Barker poem set to music, an American folk classic, and a German hip-hop song.
Customer Reviews:
Smart and funny as ever.......2007-03-09
I've been following the Austin Lounge Lizards for decades, and find this recording a refreshing return to their original perennial subjects for satire: drugs, beer, alienation and religion. How American... What makes these guys different is their highly intelligent wit AND quality musicianship. Harmonizing beautifully, articulating effectively so you can understand the lyrics, and including banjo, fiddle and slide guitar puts these guys a cut above. As with many maturing musical groups, they've finally added a female voice - a welcome change. So glad they're still keeping us laughing and singing along!
You know you want it. .......2007-01-11
The only reason I withheld one star is that too many repetitions of a couple of the songs make me feel like I've spent too long cruising blogs. Xmas Time For Visa and Exxon-Mobil don't inspire a lot of re-plays for that reason only. I can get depressed over that stuff on my own, but the messages might sink in with other folks.
The rest is gold. One True God is perfect for these troubled times. I DARE you to quit playing Wer Ist Da?, even though, y'know, the whole German hip-hop swing thing has just been done to death. A Spanish-fluent friend cracked up when I played her Buenos Dias, Budweiser -- apparently the English translations provided don't match up to the Spanish 100%. She LOVED it. (And there may be no better reading of a line, ever, than, "I would risk hell.") Conrad sounds fine on Arnold, which is just silly and fun, and Hank's voice is at its hike-up-your-socks-and-start-living-again best in Crappy Times Before. And Neighbor of the Beast always works.
You don't even have to ask your doctor if The Drugs I Need is right for you. Available without a prescription from Amazon.com.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

American audiences will embrace Henri Salvador like he's a Grandpa Moses of bossa nova. It's not every day that an eightysomething crooner steps out of U.S. obscurity with an album of warm-as-fresh-pastry cabaret music. Of course, Salvador is no Henri-come-lately. He's famous in France and francophone former colonies (like his native Cayenne, French Guiana) and has decades of television and recording work to his credit. Now, it's time for stateside listeners to play catch-up. This album was reportedly recorded on the verge of Salvador's retirement, and though the sound is classique, many of the songs are of recent vintage. Salvador's charming, half-spoken vocals will resound with listeners familiar with the suave stylings of cabaret practitioners such as Charles Trenet and Walter Hyatt. There's also a bit of Danny Kaye in his phrasing on the album's lighter fare, like the brass-band-flavored "Mademoiselle"--no surprise given Salvador's extensive comedic résumé. Younger audiences primed by the ironic, sophisticated grooves of Dimitiri from Paris and Money Mark will delight in much of the instrumentation here. The album is, in fact, a triumph of production and arranging. Full orchestras are cued, at times, at the same volume as a single instrument, reduced to the level of pure atmosphere. One track, "Il fait Dimanche," has a funky vamp that demands to be sampled for the contemporary dance floor. Another, "Faire des ronds dans l'eau," subsists on strummed guitar and a trap set, with the occasional gypsy-style, savory violin part added for spice. Throughout, Salvador presents himself as an astute, sympathetic performer. On "Je sais que tu sais" it's hard to tell where his whispered voice ends and the drummer's light brushes begin. Apparently, swingers--in the jazz sense of the word--get better with age. --Marc Weidenbaum
Customer Reviews:
EXCEPTIONAL!!.......2007-06-24
If you want music for a sultry day when you're sitting at a table under the sun with great company and just want to enjoy the moment with a jazzy background sound... this is for you! Think "sitting in the shade under an umbrella on a sunny afternoon at a little table on the sidewalk outside a corner cafe...."
ENJOY!
What an excellent voice ... really really great sounds!
A Great Jazz Performer.......2006-04-08
I bought this CD at the year of 2002 then had a period (3-4 yrs) didn't listen it. It's still being very nice when I took it out for listen today.
A surprising but amazing contribution from Salvador.......2004-02-15
So many artists (and voices) get threadbare with age. Only a few are lucky enough to find a way to keep some of their old color or adapt with the times. Even more rare is the artist who, after a career of decent (but rarely great) output, produces a stunner. That is the case with "Chambre Avec Vue."
I know there are Salvador stalwarts out there who will protest my characterization of Henri as being generally just OK, and I agree he released several standout songs throughout his long career. But those standouts are watered down by so many recordings that are "just a bit too." Just a bit too sentimental. Just a bit too comical. Or just a bit too out-of-genre for Henri to carry. Salvador's early background in cabaret, his affection for a variety of musical styles, and his associations with a wide range of musical greats (everyone from Django Reinhardt to Quincy Jones) have resulted in an impressive (and no doubt enjoyable) but flawed career.
With "Chambre Avec Vue," Salvador has taken the best of what he does well and has improved on it by performing with more wisdom than whimsy, more expertise than experimentation, and more authentic sentiment than unselfconscious sappiness. I agree with another reviewer that the influence of Benjamin Biolay (who has been associated with a few really great albums lately) cannot be underestimated on this album. But regardless of who you think deserves the credit, this is truly an album for those who like nuanced, toasted jazz vocals. Yes, it's all in French, and the album is packed with more international influences (notably bossa nova) than the average jazz vocal album. But on "Chambre Avec Vue," Salvador sounds as relaxed as Bing Crosby, as seasoned as recent Tony Bennett, and as melancholy as Chet Baker. That adds up to a surprising and welcome addition to the Salvador oeuvre.
Amazing rebirth.......2004-02-08
This album is an amazing comeback for Henri Salvador. It was co-writen and produced by Benjamin Biolay. There is a whole web of work spinning out from Biolay from his work co-writing and orchastrating Karen Ann (think French Joni Mitchell or modern Francoiz Hardy) to his collaboration on his sister, Coralie Clement's album. Not to be ignored however is his solo work, Rose Kennedy and the amazing Negatif. If you dig the sounds on this album and you have the cash pick up Jet Sounds by Nicola Conte...
Almost Perfect.......2002-04-29
This is indeed an exquisite album--evoking the romance of Europe and France in particular, wonderful street cafes, jazzy nightspots...humorous, romantic, at times even beautiful, ideal cocktail party or late night music...EXCEPT for the very first track, which sticks out like a sore thumb, with an obnoxious "jazz" harmony vocal out of character with the rest of the disc and which, simply put, just grates. If you can stomach that one, the rest is pure bliss. I burned the CD to another disc, deleting the first track, and I've been in heaven ever since.

I was there on the second of the two nights they recorded this, and I've seen them 3 times before this. To put it simply, the Blue Hawaiians ROCK. They are so tight and so good, it has to be heard to be believed. Their fusion of surf and lounge music is unique. If you don't like this, then you just don't get it.

not bad compilation.......2004-07-16
Why four stars..? It`s quite good compilation. Some tracks are really annoying and at the otherhand two or three(depends on listener taste of music) excelent tracks. I`d liked the second most.
Anyway if you prefer hip-hop beats 4 house. I suggest u to buy the volume 2... much better than this but the end of volume two was quite a dissapointment...
Vol 1 is a good introduction to the second.

And God bless Ferrante and Teicher.......2002-03-19
As some of you know, I am a Ferrante and Teicher fan from way back. When I read their dedication on this disc, I was really impressed. I dont know which one is officially retired, but the fact that he came out of retirement to help put this disc together was great... and the disc is A-1! During the Bicentennial year(1976) I had a vinyl disc, Spirit of 176, which
much of the music from this disc is from. Some of the musical effects are quite interesting, and my mother really loves the disc. I am so pleased that they released it. A real keeper!

Cocktail Surfing.......2006-03-15
This is one of the best "new" surf music CD's even if it isn't the Blue Hawaiins most current. Putting words to the classic "Pipeline" that was originally played by the Chantays is great. The live atmosphere and the smooth music flow are outstanding. OUTSIDE!!!!!
Entertaining...........2004-03-27
Based on the reviews for this CD I purchased it with high expectations. Although it's entertaining and does have its high moments, there's not much that would keep me coming back to this CD after a couple of listenings. Oh well.....
Great CD! In my regular rotation.......2004-01-17
This album is great! As already mentioned, the Blue Hawaiians are a great surf band, but what makes them stand out from the pack is their laid-back lounge twist, mellow vocals, and clever lyrics. Most surf-music is instrumental, which is okay, but Chris Fontana's singing (a little Chris Isaak?) is what brings you back to this album over and over where other surf discs may fall short. BTW- The Blue Hawaiians also do a lot of the music for the Spongebob Squarepants cartoons, giving them an extra shot of street cred in my opinion.
These Guys Are The Real Thing.......2003-02-04
This is as good a surf band as there ever was, right here in our midst. The musicianship is impeccable, and they are charismatic performers with a genuine love and respect for the genre. They bring an original touch and a lot of wit to their music without any sign of the ever-present Gen-X smirk. In this show they have the guts to play a lot of dark and mid-tempo stuff like "Endless Sleep", which is genuinely scary (check it out!). They bring an original touch to the covers- "Dick Tracy" is a masterpiece- and the original stuff is every bit as good. The cheerful "Surfin' Tragedy" is a huge favorite with me.
Guys, if you're still out there- give us another one!
Carz and Boardz.......2003-01-09
The Blue Hawaiians are a great band; and for a live version it sounds very close to studio quality. They pound on Caravan, and I love Baja, because they name all these cool places to ride waves. When I first checked out Amazon.com's sampler I liked this group because of originality.A great listen for any encounter on your planet wave.Aside, from this groups' great promise, there is a whole genre of groups that bend the pitch of the song and Voila! Surf and/or Film Noir. The Blue Hawaiians prove their craft.Hey! It's 2003
and this is a cool, 1995 recording. Buy this now---Listen to it anywhere!!!
