Congratulations, you're expecting a baby! What you may not be expecting is all of the requisite gear you "need" to look after your dear bundle. Fear not. Denise and Alan Fields, authors of Bridal Bargains, are here to tell you what's super and what's silly, and how to find it at the best price. You'll learn all about how (and where) to shop for a crib and dresser (including how to get European styling at reasonable prices), what you need in bedding and what can be skipped (a hint: no baby requires the $200 quilt!), which clothing brands are safest and least expensive, and how to shop for monitors, toys, car seats, strollers, books, videos, and more. The authors have field-tested every major brand (and several of the minor ones), and they provide star ratings and annotations at the end of every chapter. A helpful feature in each chapter called "Wastes of Money" will steer you away from $35 Baby Air Jordans and frilly diaper stackers that match your bedding. If that's not enough, they offer a money-back guarantee: If the book doesn't save you at least $250 in baby expenses, they'll refund the price of the book. Well researched and written in a witty and comfortable tone, Baby Bargains should be required reading for every safety- and money-conscious parent-to-be. --Rebecca A. Staffel

best book for 1st time parents!!.......2007-06-27
Without a doubt this was the most helpful book I bought or recieved. I just wish I had it sooner!! Definetly purchase this before registering for gift - it has the most extensive product reviews I could find anywhere!! I searched the internet for days and then a friend suggested this book and it had all the information I was looking for and then some
bettter than consumer reports!.......2007-06-27
This book was a HUGE help picking out the best things for us and our baby-to-be.
I registered at consumer reports, but was disappointed on how little they cover on baby stuff.
I loved the book and still continue to use it for reference.
I highly recommend it and it is a perfect gift for a newly pregnant mom!
It is more than just a bargain book- it rates everthing!
Forget about Consumers Reports and buy this book!.......2007-06-24
This book is a gem. It has reviews of all of the necessary baby items needed for first time parents. Despite the "bargain" title, it does include high end products and will even suggest some as their preferred choice especially if "grandma is buying." However, the authors also use a lot of practical sense and refuse to recommend anything that is considered outlandishly expensive (re: Bugaboo). Suggestions on outlet stores and online shopping was very appreciated as well. I only wish that I had the book earlier, prior to my wife's shower registry.
Excellent Baby Guide Book.......2007-06-14
This book is a great resource that was referred to me by many other mothers. Being a first time mom, I had no idea what to purchase except I know I wanted the best and safest items, but I wanted to spend efficiently. This book is so helpful especially when comparing brands of the big ticket items like cribs, strollers and car seats. It is interesting to weigh the difference between fashion and trend vs. reliability. I would also recommend using the Consumer Reports Best Baby Products Book, as well. They both offer up different and similar perspectives, so you can cross reference and feel comfortable with your decsions.
Great book!.......2007-06-08
Great book for new parents! It tells you what you need (and perhaps more importantly, what you don't) and gives tips on saving money as you make purchases to prepare for the arrival of your new child. I give this book as a gift often and the recipients are always thrilled by the information they learn.

Even in reverse.......2003-03-10
I read the trilogy in reverse...and still loved volume 1--Mail Order Marriages. Knowing the outcome of Sawyer & Abbey's romance, I was still in suspense as I read this section of the novel. The whole trilogy is wonderful, and leads me to believe I'll have to visit Alaska soon.
Very enjoyable!.......2002-11-17
A very sweet first book in this trilogy. I really enjoy Macomber's stories -- they are entertaining, engrossing, and amusing. She paints interesting and colorful characters.
When I finished this book, I had to immediately plow through the other two books in this delightful trilogy set in Hard Luck, Alaska. I felt like I got to know all the characters, and to be honest, now that I've gone through all the books, (6 unique stories -- 2 per book) I miss reading about the folks from Hard Luck!
A truly sweet and delightful read. Highly recommended.
Excellent read.......2001-11-20
This was the best of the trilogy. It made me want to read the rest. Scott and Susan were very likeable characters. Sawyer and Abbey's love did seem a bit too perfect. I wish more was said about Abbey's first marriage.
My favorite of the trilogy was Charles and Lanni's story. It was the right amount of conflict/resolution. It shows that there are other factors to consider about being in love, such as how family can be affected. You root for them to overcome their problems.
Perfect Summer Reading.......2001-08-09
I loved the two stories in this book. The heroes and heroines are warm, likeable characters. Supporting them throughout the story are the kindly, interesting people that one would meet in a remote Alaskan town. Having traveled there myself, I could picture perfectly the makeshift buildings and open tundra that made up the town of Hard Luck. The two brothers, Sawyer and Charles, were gentlemanly and honest. Their soon to be spouses also were the kind of women you would have wanted for your friends and neighbors. The two children of Abby, Susan and Scott, were absolutely delightful and added yet another charming dimension to an already heartwarming story.
Since this book has two separate stories, it is perfect for taking on a trip. With a short flight or quick soak in a tub, there is a chance to make some progress and actually finish a book.
Too naive, too predictable.......2001-04-08
I had read This Matter of Marriage and loved it, that's why a bought the Midnight Sons series. Boy was I ever so disappointed! The characters are sketchy at best, everybody is just plain good, not an ounce of meanness in them. They just fall in love at first sight, I mean the ones who should, and everybody else just cheers. Nobody is heartbroken for more than a few lines, nobody is jealous, everybody is friendly, generous and understanding. Even for fiction it's too much.

Informative and entertaining book.......2007-04-10
I purchased this book out of interest in the subject of mail order brides. The stories in the book are interesting and entertaining, and are often better than fiction. I highly recommend the book!
The perfect "history" book.......2006-07-31
I picked up this book at a museum bookstore in Arizona last December. I'm not usually one to read non-fiction, but I found this to be fascinating from the start. It hit home, too, when I read The Benton Brides which starts off in Ellicott City, Maryland. I live in Ellicott City and could envision it all very clearly which made the book all that much more real and special. It's very well written and a great book to learn about life during the pioneer days of the 1800's. I highly recommend it to everyone!
Love and survival on the frontier.......2006-07-29
Reviewed by April Sullivan for Reader Views 97/06)
Around the 1850s, pioneering American men left the east and headed west to uncharted territory like California, Oregon, and Wyoming to find gold or claim land. But what happened when they got out there and realized there were no women to share their land or riches with? How did they entice women to the wild west? And what type of woman was likely to make that journey across America? "Hearts West" tells us these stories.
"Hearts West" relays the true stories of mail-order brides and bachelors during the late 1800s in America's wild west. Chris Enss has done her research and provides the reader with accurate information collected through journals, newspapers, letters, photographs, and other historical documents. She adds just the right amount of fictionalized commentary to draw the reader in, but not intrude upon the facts. This book is appropriate to use as a textbook or for research since it is so well documented. But it is also a good read for anyone interested in the topic.
Many methods were used to bring women to the west. Matrimony magazines and newsletters were the most common method. Men and women both wrote ads and answered by letter to find a suitable mate. Samples in the book were surprisingly similar to today's online dating service ads. More innovative methods include renting boats and shipping groups of women across country.
This book is filled with short anecdotes that tell a much larger story and provide a historical viewpoint of relationships. This is a viewpoint that we don't often get enough of. Without these brave men and women many of us wouldn't be here today. I found that there were two overwhelming themes in this book - the power of survival and the power of love. After only a few letters passed between them, a man and a woman were brave enough to decide to meet and marry. Why would they take this risk? For many of the women it was a chance to make more of their life. Stuck in poverty, dead-end servant jobs, or just the thought of spinsterhood drove them to take that plunge. While some of these matches ended in disaster, others ended in long happy relationships. "Hearts West" provides a good mix of humor, disaster, sweetness, and sadness to give an overall picture of what our American ancestors went through, all for the sake of love and survival.

Nothing new and/or exciting................2006-07-21
Good reference for someone just starting out.......but is not a definite "must have." You can spend very little time on the internet to find the same and MUCH MORE information for free. I was very disappointed to learn I had already signed up for the same sites mentioned in the book and have been a member for at least 5-6 years on those sites.
Good on saving resources, not so much on earning.......2006-07-16
I have been making money online since 1998 and am always checking out resources to help me make more. The Mom's Guide to Earning and Saving Thousands on the Internet offers some terrific savings ideas and resources in one place. It's especially helpful for busy moms who don't have time to research and investigate resources themselves.
I was very intersted in the earning aspect especially since it covered surveys and mystery shopping. I still don't feel this is a great way to earn income from home. I have tested many survey sites and have yet to get paid by the legitimate ones. Turns out I don't qualify for most surveys I'm sent. (I'm a 40 year old mom of two, married who owns a home...). I've gotten a free lunch with mystery shopping, but that won't pay the mortgage.
If you are looking for great resources and ideas to save money using the Internet, this is a good resource. But if you want to make money, this isn't your book.
The Mom's Guide to Earning and Saving Thousands on the Internet.......2006-03-26
This book is a great resource for oodles of websites for almost everything. Over the last few years I have spent a lot of time on the internet and already am aware of most of the content offered, but there was lots of stuff that was new to me as well. I was hoping for a little more on the earning 'thousands'aspect, but I think that is in part due to limitations on what is available on the internet. Of course, it also depends on how much time you are willing to spend doing these things. Overall, I thought this was a great comprehensive guide to anyone who uses the internet, not just moms.
They showed me the money! .......2006-03-09
I found this book listed in an article and it really caught my attention. I'm a part-time working mom but it never seems to give our budget enough boost. This book gave me such much needed information and insightful advice on how to change that without having to work more hours away from home.
I felt like the authors spoke directly to me and had been there, done that. Some of the topics I was familiar with, but there's a lot I didn't know along with a very organized approach on how I could make this work for me and my individual circumstances. This book hasn't moved from it's place next to my computer and I find myself consulting it almost on a daily basis.
So far, the earnings are adding up quickly (nice to have pin money in my pocket again!) but the real surprise is all the savings I never quite managed to put together in this way that the guide teaches.
All in all, it's a great little book and perfect for those struggling to make ends meet. Thumbs up from me!
Super Savings!!!.......2006-02-28
From one frugal mom to another- this book is absolutely worth every penny! It is chocked full of tons of useful information. I only wish I'd had it sooner. I thought I knew quite a bit about saving and about the Internet, but I'm amazed by how many new tips I learned. I really appreciated how everything is presented in a clear way and how they focus on things that can be done without disrupting your life or cutting into the precious time we already have too little of. Highly, highly recommended!

Book Description
By the year 2000 more than 350 Internet agencies were plying the email-order marriage trade, and the business of matching up mostly Western men with women from Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America had become an example of globalization writ large. This provocative work opens a window onto the complex motivations and experiences of the people behind the stereotypes and misconceptions that have exploded along with the practice of transnational courtship and marriage. Combining extensive Internet ethnography and face-to-face fieldwork, Romance on a Global Stage looks at the intimate realities of Filipinas, Chinese women, and U.S. men corresponding in hopes of finding a suitable marriage partner.
Through the experiences of those engaged in pen pal relationships--their stories of love, romance, migration, and long-distance dating--this book conveys the richness and dignity of women's and men's choices without reducing these correspondents to calculating opportunists or naive romantics. Attentive to the structural, cultural, and personal factors that prompt women and men to seek marriage partners abroad, Romance on a Global Stage questions the dichotomies so frequently drawn between structure and agency, and between global and local levels of analysis.

A Unique Study.......2004-10-04
The review column of Amazon is not an approriate place to flame or post such loud propaganda as some of the submitters before me have. In this case, such obnoxious attention-getting, no matter for what purpose, can seriously detract from the worthwhile merits of a profound study such as we have here. While the propagandist(s) only wish to draw attention to something he or she feels is vitally important and releveant, its very brash and 'partisan' (in this case, anti-feminist) style will actually turn people away from reading this book who otherwise might learn a lot from it. Constable's nuanced account of the "mail-order" bride paradigm and the varieties of Pacific Rim cross-cultural marriage issues are presented in a well-studied, first and third person narrative that is rich with real-life examples and specifics. In basic terms, her book makes a strong case for the varied nature of people involved in such relationships, and does not settle for glossing over them with simplistic and often unwholesome generalized demographics. This book is about real individuals, not theories. The conclusions Constable's book offer are based more on observations than philosophies. This is what makes it so engaging and valid to me. I recommend this book to anyone curious about so-called 'mail-order' marriages, and for those who have been around the scholarly block a few times and prefer NOT to read the sort of propagandist headlines as seen elsewhere above in this review column.
MARRIAGE BROKER REGULATION ACT CRIMINALIZES LOVE LETTERS.......2004-05-12
HIGH QUALITY FOREIGN WOMEN THREATEN AMERICAN FEMINIST PARADIGM
Romance on a Global Stage equates to American men "voting with their passports." It is a quiet rejection of American women that seems to have the attention of feminists who are now attempting to pass a law that criminalizes the writing of letters to foreign women. Search for "marriage broker regulation act" in google and learn more.
The very women we are trying to escape from are the ones attempting to keep us from escaping.

Book Description
Fantasy Islands is the only book on how to travel and meet international women. This unique title is is for the man who is attracted to women from different cultures, who wants to explore relationships with a woman who can offer a unique insight into life, a woman with a different culture, language, religion and beauty.
Maybe he wants to get married, settle down and have a family - or maybe not. Maybe he wants romance and excitement, to share intimate moments with a woman in her native land...a woman who can show him around like no other tour guide. It doesn't matter. Either way, Fantasy Islands can help by providing unique information on how and where to meet women around the world. Readers get "hands-on" information, the result of over ten years of research, travel and friendships with men and women around the world.
Fantasy Islands may seem controversial to some. It does not make moral judgements on how to make contact with exotic women. It leaves that decision up to the reader. Fantasy Islands objectively describes a variety of methods, from the traditional way of meeting so-called "mail order brides" through correspondence, to traveling alone to distant countries and meeting hundreds of bikini-clad dancers in the bars of Thailand and the Philippines.
International women admire American, Australian and West European men. Women from many parts of the world - Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe - think they make good husbands, and caring, affectionate lovers.
THE BENEFITS OF READING FANTASY ISLANDS
Get 100's of letters and photos from fascinating women. Come home to the fun and excitement of a mailbox filled with letters and photos of women from around the world.

Travel alone to distant lands and never be lonely. Arrive alone, then learn exactly where and how to find a female traveling companion - and a great time - within two days.
International introduction services. The real story, with objective reviews and descriptions, of "mail order bride" services - what to pay for and what not to pay for. How to get the most for your money. Which services are the most professional and reliable.
Travelers' tales. Get tidbits of tasty insight from men who've lived and loved around the world into the personalities and intimate habits of fantastic females from far-off lands. East-West relationships. Men learn why GIs, sailors and international businessmen rave about women from exotic places like Brazil, Thailand, Costa Rica and the Philippines.

MARRIAGE BROKER REGULATION ACT INTENDS TO END WEB SITES.......2004-06-13
THAT ENABLE MEN TO CONTACT CHASTE, LOYAL WOMEN (NON-AMERICAN, OF COURSE!)
Answers all of your basic questions..........2003-04-21
This is a great book for any guy who wishes to meet a female from another country! Any of your questions or concerns will probably be covered somewhere in this book. Just to mention several of the many topics discussed are: Placing & responding to international personal ads, culture differences, international introduction services, visas & marriage & making the most of your trip. The author also discusses in detail the women & environment of over a dozen countries including Thailand, Brazil, DR, Scandinavia, Cuba and others. Besides being informative, this is also an entertaining read. I mainly read this for entertainment purposes and can definately relate to it as I have travelled to a couple of the countries mentioned in the book. I recommend this book to those who are serious about starting on the path to meet an international mate or to those just enjoy international travel and meeting people in the places they travel to.
It's Hard to Meet People...not anymore!.......2001-07-29
I never had troubles meeting women, but they always seemed to want to be with other men. So I bought this book so that I could meet women that maybe I wouldn't say the wrong things, or maybe because I was famous that might like that. Let me say, I really liked it. Anyone that can read it, and wants to find women that won't right away leave them, should read it. The woman that I met had to move back, but there will be many more, thanks to Fantasy Islands!
A excellent source........1999-06-18
I think that Fantasy Islands is a great source for the international bridebusiness for I Agree with the book and other sources 100% that the international Marrages work out much better then our domestic Marriagesanytime.

This 1992 Book Is Hopelessly Out-of-Date.......2000-04-16
The Internet is not even mentioned in this book. And that's where the biggest action now is, as far as personals advertising is concerned. The old print sources that are listed are for the most part not current. The advice is so elementary (don't write about sex in your first letter, don't be late for your first date, be sure to meet in a public place the first time and the like) as to be virtually useless. And finally -- let's face it -- the fact that the author has gone through hundreds of women during a period of several years and still not met his match does not speak very highly of his frequently touted "system." The title is catchy, though ... and the cover is nicely designed!
Good for finding Pen Pals too.......1998-08-23
I bought this book several years ago -- and found it fascinating. At that point, I had already met the man of my dreams thru the personals, and wanted to find pen pals and friends. I found this book very helpful, but, alas, the pen pals I made have since faded. The only negative thing I could say about this book is that even a year after its publish date, some of the organization addresses were out of date! The most positive thing I can say about this book is the author's positive, go-for-it attitude. A superb resource for those of us who enjoy writing letters!!
Superior work by author who married a foreign woman.......1997-12-11
All the questions you have about about finding the woman of your dreams are answered here. This book even has a chapter on deciding if this is a good strategy for you. After that, the book tells you tactics which he used in finding his wife. Also contains a chapter on visas, immigration, etc.

Book Description
A contemporary romance novel. Mail-order brides - ads for them are everywhere, in "scandal magazines", in your home town newspapers across the United States, in trade journals, in the rural electric co-op's monthly magazine... And there's even a magazine, ALASKA MEN, that features eligible Alaskan bachelors. Do women ever respond to these ads? What are the resulting relationships like?

Alaskan Mail Order Trash.......2000-02-10
This is not even a novel, it looks and reads like a children's book. When the book arrived, I was convinced that there must be some mistake. Do not make the same mistake I did. My review of this book is a big thumbs down! I'm very disappointed that Amazon would even carry this rip-off, much less pawn it off as an adult romance novel. A novel has to have a plot, dosen't it?
