Book Description

This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott's hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-07-02

I read this book in 1-day which is highly unusual for me! Finding one's self in fallout of loss and life change can be hugely challenging; however, it has never been easier to hear about than through the lens Elizabeth Gilbert's experience. I am relieved to find a writer who can probe and explore the physiology of change without leaving their guts and all the un-necessary, often all too boring and redundant details all over the dining room table, or living room floor for that matter. Gilbert is quick, colorful, current, highly entertaining, lucid and thorough as she resolves some very big life questions. If you want to see someone make sense of change, AND move on, read this book. ON the other hand, if you need to experience someone dissecting their depression endlessly, and beating a dead horse you may not be ready for this.

5 out of 5 stars deep and delicious and fun.......2007-06-29

This book is deep, delicious, and fun. It chronicles a woman's journey after her divorce. The divorce is not described in detail, but is clearly a protracted, difficult event. The author goes to Italy, where she learns Italian for the sheer joy of it, and eats as much gelato and other excellent food as she can. She goes on to India, where she meditates, though she had resisted this practice before and felt like she wasn't good at it. Then on to Indonesia, where she finds balance. This book is so well written. There are wonderful practices that the author undertakes (e.g., writing in a journal while very upset and then writing back to herself for comfort, having a ceremony alone in which she lets go of her former marriage and imagines herself being forgiven, and viewing Depression as a real life visitor who sneaks in but can also leave). Sometimes people find memoirs to be narcissistic or self-indulgent. This one is not. The author pokes fun at herself and is very real, human, and intensely likeable for all her imperfections. I recommend this book highly, what a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars I knew it!.......2007-06-29

I bought this book when it first came out and I knew it was going to be on the Best Seller's List! I should be a book critic! I loved this book and love this author.

5 out of 5 stars A Bead Counted in Gratitude.......2007-06-28

As a guy, my mind simply would've never noticed this book for me to pick it up. The title and presentation, with exception to the prayer beads, simply don't call out to the masculine spirit. It took one of my beautiful friends of the feminine persuasion to place this book in my hands.

As a hitchhiker thru many lands, my wanderlust delighted and splashed in the puddles of scenic descriptions and friendly faces that fill this book. Many memories resurfaced, particularly in India, and future plans were altered to taste in a bit of the lovely author's experience.

As a holyman, I love watching myself and others be dragged, kicking and screaming, by our divine guidance to a more healthy, holy self. From the very introduction, I could feel the presence of the divine that had already entered this woman, and dug in for a good read that rarely let me down.

As a lover, who was once under a vow of celibacy, I could empathize with Elizabeth's pain in a place where passion and sex ruled, but know well the internal fortitude and strength this builds. The internal strife of this choice was one of my favorite aspects of her growth.

As a writer, had I only one sentence in which to sum up this book, I would state: "One woman's journey, out of breakdown back to wholeness, across Italy, India and Indonesia." Amazingly, this just happens to be a good part of what the title states, and it is obvious from the very start that her journey was more success than failure.

As a walking advertising campaign for everything I love, I have found that I can turn anyone onto this book simply by handing it to them with the words "pick a paragraph... any paragraph." I have yet to have anyone simply shrug off what they randomly read.

To Elizabeth Gilbert: "My love and gratitude for every word. See you later alligator."

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2007-06-28

Best book I've read in a long time. Actually used a highlighter in this one to mark particular groups of words that just resonated with me. A soulful, well-written book. I didn't want it to end.

    Book Description

In one of the most anticipated books of the year, Lee Woodruff, along with her husband, Bob Woodruff, share their never-before-told story of romance, resilience, and survival following the tragedy that transformed their lives and gripped a nation.

In January 2006, the Woodruffs seemed to have it all–a happy marriage and four beautiful children. Lee was a public relations executive and Bob had just been named co-anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. Then, while Bob was embedded with the military in Iraq, an improvised explosive device went off near the tank he was riding in. He and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, were hit, and Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury that nearly killed him.

In an Instant is the frank and compelling account of how Bob and Lee’s lives came together, were blown apart, and then were miraculously put together again–and how they persevered, with grit but also with humor, through intense trauma and fear. Here are Lee’s heartfelt memories of their courtship, their travels as Bob left a law practice behind and pursued his news career and Lee her freelance business, the glorious births of her children and the challenges of motherhood.

Bob in turn recalls the moment he caught the journalism “bug” while covering Tiananmen Square for CBS News, his love of overseas assignments and his guilt about long separations from his family, and his pride at attaining the brass ring of television news–being chosen to fill the seat of the late Peter Jennings.

And, for the first time, the Woodruffs reveal the agonizing details of Bob’s terrible injuries and his remarkable recovery. We learn that Bob’s return home was not an end to the journey but the first step into a future they have learned not to fear but to be grateful for.

In an Instant is much more than the dual memoir of love and courage. It is an important, wise, and inspiring guide to coping with tragedy–and an extraordinary drama of marriage, family, war, and nation.

A percentage of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury.

4 out of 5 stars In an Instant: A Family's Jouney of Love and Healing.......2007-06-30

What this is, is a journey of Yuppie-fication of a combat trauma. If there was ever a disclosure of modern life with all its benefits and right connections, this is it. "Feeling, oh God, I am feeling...." This is a salute to what the young, privileged adults are living and dealing with ever since graduation into law firms and PR firms, where a job always awaits them, while they move across the country and the globe. Never are we pounding the streets here, reading the want-ads and being unemployed for months at a time with this bunch. Tennis courts and White House dinners, and "Oh, God, for a conversational friend who understands!!" This book is meant for the time machine, and inserted into a capsule to be opened maybe 150 years from now to illustrate this time period, and the network news media. I love some of the quotes to their children who are to be ultimately protected from the real world: "Is Dad in danger??" "No, he is embedded with the US Military!!!" Wow. About the time one has read at least 150 pages into superwoman Lee addressing every twinge of an emotion, this reader is prone to say, "GOOD LORD, do you think all those young widows at Fort Bragg think this way??" C'mon; the Woodruffs got the best medical treatment within the US Military one could get--without wearing a uniform, and thankfully this book will illustrate that fantastic medical technology leap into the future due to our doctors who are in uniform taking care of these IED tragedies that George W. Bush and his band of freaks in the White House have incurred for all time. Just think, he may be out of the Presidency in a short while, but he will get to look at these head trauma victims for the rest of his life. (There is some justice after all.) Like Bob says, walking the halls of Bethesda, some of these guys had no one there at all to help them out. Lonely, without care and compassion, they had to face what he did by themselves--and so will. Make sure the VA gets the funding it will need for a very long time if you care at all after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Very Insightful.......2007-06-27

I purchased this book for my mother for a Mother's Day present and then read it myself. My father is quadriplegic and my mother and I both thought there was more than one instance in this book where she shared our thoughts word for word. A powerful and fascinating read.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring story about love and determination.......2007-06-13

I was extremely impressed by this book. I followed the news coverage about the injuries ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, sustained in January 2006 while reporting in Iraq, so I was familiar with the severity of Bob's condition. I also knew that he made a remarkable recovery, and I watched the documentary he made for ABC that detailed his experiences in Iraq as well as his time recovering in the hospital and rehabilitation facility. I figured that "In an Instant" would just provide more details that had to be cut out of the TV documentary, but I was wrong. This book is so much more than that.

First of all, Bob only wrote half of this book. The other half was penned by Bob's devoted wife, Lee, who remained vigilant at her husband's side throughout his recovery. In addition to chronicling the circumstances leading up to the explosion in Iraq and the difficulties that Bob faced during his recovery, the book also provides a history of Lee and Bob as a couple. When they first reconnected after college, Bob was a hip young lawyer, but he was soon bit by the journalism bug. Both he and Lee made numerous sacrifices and dragged their family around the world on more than one occasion so that Bob could fulfill his dreams and have a successful career in journalism. The life of a journalist takes a toll on the family, though, and both Lee and Bob discuss the many challenges and personal struggles their marriage faced over the years.

Despite the hardships caused by Bob's career, nothing could prepare this couple for what happened in Iraq in the winter of 2006. The details of what happened to Bob are horrifying, and it's amazing that he's made such great strides in his recovery. "In an Instant" is an inspirational story about how miracles can happen, but it also paints a portrait of an incredibly solid marriage, which is always nice to see.

    5 out of 5 stars A gripping tale of a news anchor's recovery.......2007-05-30

Lee and Bob Woodruff were a poster couple for success. However, "in an instant" they became a terrified, grieving wife and a mortally wounded man whose gripping story was played out in a fishbowl of headlines and public sympathy.

Lee was a powerful public relations executive married to a news anchor who had risen in the competitive world of broadcast journalism like a shooting star. His career sometimes put a strain on their marriage, separating him many times and for long periods from Lee and their four children. But the couple's love was durable and overcame a number of obstacles. In his biggest leap up the ladder of achievement, Bob was named co-anchor of ABC's "World News Tonight" with Elizabeth Vargas in December 2005, replacing Peter Jennings.

Bob's star fell and nearly burned out when he was embedded with troops in Iraq barely a month later. His armored vehicle was hit by a nearby improvised explosive device (IED), and he and a cameraman were injured. Bob's head was bwoodruffed by hundreds of rocks of various sizes that broke his skull like a melon, and one large rock lodged in his throat. At the moment of impact, Bob was blessed with a vision of white light and a sense of pervading peace. But soon afterwards he awoke, aware of spitting blood and feeling someone touching his head. He recalled being relieved when he learned that the cameraman was fine.

Then followed the slow and agonizing healing process. IN AN INSTANT is written in tandem by Bob and Lee. We learn that being at the bedside and in the waiting room can be as painful as lying on the operating table. Lee describes feeling grateful that she loved her husband, and praying and working for his recovery. As anyone knows who has ever dealt with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), it's excruciating to watch someone who used to be intelligent and on top of his/her game struggling to remember the word for "bird" or "lettuce." Bob talks about how simple words would float by, but he just couldn't catch them. He had to learn how to speak again, and his balance was affected by the loss of that large section of cranium.

Lee and Bob know how lucky they are. They had many allies and advantages to speed Bob's recuperation. He had cranial reconstruction and every necessary therapy. Above all, he had a caring wife who oversaw his treatments --- though she was often in a private hell of worry.

Seeing soldiers with injuries similar to his own has made Bob crucially aware of how much he has regained and how great the loss can be when the brain is affected. Bob has improved sufficiently so that he now feels like a father and husband again. Though his career is still an open question, he participated in producing a documentary called "To Iraq and Back," which highlights his extraordinary journey and the suffering of soldiers with TBI.

Are you just another AFC ("average frustrated chump") trying to meet an HB ("hot babe")? How would you like to "full-close" with a Penthouse Pet of the Year? The answers, my friend, are in Neil Strauss's entertaining book The Game. Strauss was a self-described chick repellant--complete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like "half a man." That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Strauss's life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery.

Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artist--smile.

After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. After a while, he ran out of one-liners and had to have a real conversation. Still, The Game is a great read that may help some AFCs come out of their shells. --Alex Roslin

    Book Description

Hidden somewhere, in nearly every major city in the world, is an underground seduction lair. And in these lairs, men trade the most devastatingly effective techniques ever invented to charm women. This is not fiction. These men really exist. They live together in houses known as Projects. And Neil Strauss, the bestselling author, spent two years living among them, using the pseudonym Style to protect his real-life identity. The result is one of the most explosive and controversial books of the year -- guaranteed to change the lives of men and transform the way women understand the opposite sex forever.

On his journey from AFC (average frustrated chump) to PUA (pick-up artist) to PUG (pick-up guru), Strauss not only shares scores of original seduction techniques but also has unforgettable encounters with the likes of Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Heidi Fleiss, and Courtney Love. And then things really start to get strange -- and passions lead to betrayals lead to violence. The Game is the story of one man's transformation from frog to prince -- to prisoner in the most unforgettable book of the year.

A very quick read and entertaining story. However, it just touches on the real 'Game'. If you want to learn specific techniques of a pickup artist, other books/materials have to be purchased. It was definitely interesting having background knowledge of the 'Society', but I'm finding myself looking for more...

    4 out of 5 stars Actually a story book.......2007-06-19

this is a story book. Although i almost didnt learn anything from it, considering its size, i could have a good knowledge about who is who in the seduction comunnity and it makes you want to learn the "routines" that Neil is always mentioning.

3 out of 5 stars Go into your purchase with your eyes open........2007-06-18

A lot of the press that this book gets bills it as a "how to" guide to picking up women. This book is not a how to, it's a chronicle. You will not find step-by-step instruction, you will find a story. I won't judge the truthfulness of the story because I wasn't there to observe it. Further warning: you may not enjoy this book if you don't have a slightly machiavellian personality. If you're not at all that way, you'll be disgusted by the events described; if you're more than just slightly machiavellian, you'll be disapointed by the ending. As a story, I find "The Game" to be very good, as a how-to book, it is poor, hence the average rating.

    5 out of 5 stars Great all around read. . . .......2007-06-14

I was a little skeptical reading this at first because it seemed like an advice journal. However, once I dug in, I realized the author, Neil Strauss, had some real definition and posed solid points and tips on not just how to pick up woman, but how to pick up an entire room - girls and guys alike. It's a little slow in the middle, but the ending is what really sells the book. Things come together and once you realize that this book is about a way of life, and not just about getting in bed with girls, the message is revealed. Great read!

5 out of 5 stars It's not about pick uping girls. It's about challenge.......2007-06-09

The first time my brother showed me the book and I reed the words '(...) I want you to know that I wasn't running game on you. I was being sincere. Really. You were different' I knew it would be a great book.
I had the privilege to knew some of the guys of the book - including Mystery. I'm not a great fan of the pick up way-of-life, I prefer long terms relationships, but so what ? This is still a great book with great stories.
This is a book of how some geeks go against his fears and achived their goals. Goals that may sound stupid, but were THEIR goals.
For a lot of people this book is about pick uping girls. Not for me. For me it is about challenge.

    Book Description

“There are places that I have never forgotten. A little cobbled street in a smoky mill town in the North of England has haunted me for the greater part of my life. It was inevitable that I should write about it and the people who lived on both sides of its ‘Invisible Wall.’ ”

The narrow street where Harry Bernstein grew up, in a small English mill town, was seemingly unremarkable. It was identical to countless other streets in countless other working-class neighborhoods of the early 1900s, except for the “invisible wall” that ran down its center, dividing Jewish families on one side from Christian families on the other. Only a few feet of cobblestones separated Jews from Gentiles, but socially, it they were miles apart.

On the eve of World War I, Harry’s family struggles to make ends meet. His father earns little money at the Jewish tailoring shop and brings home even less, preferring to spend his wages drinking and gambling. Harry’s mother, devoted to her children and fiercely resilient, survives on her dreams: new shoes that might secure Harry’s admission to a fancy school; that her daughter might marry the local rabbi; that the entire family might one day be whisked off to the paradise of America.

Then Harry’s older sister, Lily, does the unthinkable: She falls in love with Arthur, a Christian boy from across the street.

When Harry unwittingly discovers their secret affair, he must choose between the morals he’s been taught all his life, his loyalty to his selfless mother, and what he knows to be true in his own heart.

A wonderfully charming memoir written when the author was ninety-three, The Invisible Wall vibrantly brings to life an all-but-forgotten time and place. It is a moving tale of working-class life, and of the boundaries that can be overcome by love.

An absolutely wonderful book written by a 93 year old author who captures the very essence of anti-semitism in pre-World War I England through his own childhood experiences. The last chapter is so descriptive and poignant...really tugs at the heartstrings. I hope Mr. Bernstein continues to share his gift of the written word.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-28

Wonderfully written. This book surprised me because of its unpredictability. I couldn't put it down. Mr. Bernstein's story is beautiful, it's a wonder why he waited so long to share it.

5 out of 5 stars A read to get you thinking.......2007-05-25

My six member book club read this last month, and all of us, including our most critical member, found this book very enjoyable and enlightening. The inclusion of dialog easily puts the reader in the time period. The tone and style of the author encourage empathy and understanding of both populations on either side of the invisible wall. The author conveys his and his sibling's emotions in the gentlest of ways while the reader easily grasps that at the time they were much more. While not quite a page turner, my attention never lagged and I would have willingly read more. I would have appreciated more wisdom on the overall subject such as was found in Arthur's letter to Lily.

    5 out of 5 stars Vivid Memoir.......2007-05-25

Harry Bernstein writes in a descriptive manner that makes all the characters seem to be living right in front of the reader's eyes. The story is so interesting that I could not put the book down until I finished. It was hard to believe that a man at ninety years of age could remember so much detail and emotion back to his early childhood. The book was well worth reading. I look forward to Mr. Bernstein's next book.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!.......2007-05-25

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was moved by the characters, who came brilliantly alive. It was fascinating, and heartbreaking and uplifting! It really gives you a glimpse of life as it was. It was almost impossible to put down. I rated this book 5 stars, but I would have rated it 105 stars if they would have let me.

5 out of 5 stars The best book to be given as a gift or to remind yourself..........2007-06-28

This book is my favorite gift giving item. I give it at baby showers, birthday parties, thank you gifts, anniversaries...I give this book to anyone who has a child. When I bought it to read to my girls it wasn't until I sat down and read it that I realized how powerful it is. It even brought tears to my husband's eyes. This story is a touching reminder to all parents to enjoy every moment. I am not exagerating when I say it changed our view on parenting, and made "not now, I am busy" words of the past in our family.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story.......2007-06-28

I received this book as a gift from my mom for my first Mother's Day. I cried. How could I not? The mom in the story is both me and my mom. Reading it from the different perspectives makes it all the more touching. As I read it to my new little girl, I dream and remember.

Just bought this book as a gift for my daughter on her 1st birthday. Have read through it a few times and get teary every time! Thank goodness she's still just a baby! But I know how quickly time will go and this is a sweet book reminding me how precious our time together is. I think she'll appreciate it SOMEDAY!

I love, love, love this book. I wish I wrote it. I have bought a bunch of copies, for myself, my friends who have little girls, and a cousin who is about to have a baby.

5 out of 5 stars Continues the story of Bella and Edward .......2007-06-30

I have to confess - I read New Moon in the same amount of time I read Twilight - 1 day. I continue to love this series, and understand the occurrances in this book set us up for a wild ride. Bella doesn't want to celebrate her birthday, because, well, she can. She is living to have another birthday when what she wants is to turn like Edward. Things go awry at Bella's 'birthday party' at the Cullen's, and Edward makes a decision to leave Bella's life forever. To say Bella is devastated is an understatement. She is crushed. What finally helps is Bella's friendship with Jacob Black - a family friend. She finds their friendship is helping her live through the pain of living without Edward. Only Jacob can't be the boy next door, can he?
Knowing the pain of living without someone you've been madly in love with, I can certainly empathize with Bella. Who hasn't felt that pain when Prince Charming suddenly is absent?
With the wildly romantic Twilight, where the relationship of Bella to Edward blossoms, Edward is not present in most of New Moon - and it showed. But it was excellent, and the story brings us back to Bella and Edward. There are many questions in these books - is being a vamp a ticket to damnation? is seeing a lover age and die noble? can there be some resolution to a timeless love? I can't wait for the next book.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-06-28

A lot of the negative reviews about Bella being depressed were ill founded. Also the negative reviews about her being "nothing without her man" completely missed the point. If my husband disappeared for months I too would be very depressed, reckless, etc. Haven't those reviewers ever been in love? It has nothing to do with a dependence on a man, it has everything to do with dependence on who you LOVE. Love lost is the enduring theme in all romance type books. It is one of the most painful things a person can endure.

That said, I really liked Jake. I think the writer set up a good duality between two kinds of loves, romantic and strong platonic love. I thought Jake was charming and funny.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-06-24

Ok, so I cried in this one! It is so fantastic and Stephenie does a great job with each character (I'm not giving a synopsis--just go buy the book!) At times I found myself reading on the edge of my seat while biting my nails in suspense. (Who reads a book on the edge of their seat?!?) I read both books in less than a week; I couldn't put them down! She is so talented at filling the book with true, honest emotion--and it's funny! I love how her books double back and fill in details page by page while you make your way from one incident to the next; as soon as one thing is tied up you're headed straight for another great adventure (or disaster!) Once you start reading, you'll be addicted...so clear your calendar before you start! (And get some take-out menus, too!)

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-20

Amazing story line, absolute page turner! In my personal top 5 favorite books of all time!

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to negative reviews for this book.......2007-06-20

I'm not sure why some others have described Bella as being whiny in this book, in my opinion it is the opposite, you rarely hear her complain about Edward leaving because it is too painful, instead she presses on the best she can. Is she hurt and depressed, of course but can you blame her? There is sadness in this book, but it isn't unbearable (for the reader), in fact, I found it realistic emotionally. I was worried about Bella whining her way through this book because of her arguement with Edward at the end of Twilight. I think that she can be a little childish sometimes (but then again, she is a child), but all in all, I really found little to no whining in this book, and I can't even recall her complaining at all. She mostly dealt with her feelings alone so I don't see who she could have whined and complained to...

I found the story line of Jacob to be incredibly interesting and exciting, and I can't wait to see what develops.

I guess my point to all of this is, don't let a couple of impatient reviewers spoil your desire to read this book, I felt that it was a fabulous sequel and I'm glad I didn't let others ruin it for me. Yes it is different from twilight, but come on, Stephenie can't tell the same story over and over again can she? I loved it's difference, and I am so pleased to have read it.

The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-06-25

I finish Marley and Me, as well as, gave this to others as gifts. Everyone loves the stories - happy and sad. This story is as much a look into the life of Marley and his owners. While I disagree with some of the methods the owners use to change Marley's behavior - mainly to have him stop jumping - I focused on the love and good times they all shared.

After reading this book, it reminded me how much work a dog really is, but if your willing to be a good owner, you get this back times 100!

I listened to this story as an audible book and found that it enhanced the experience - it is read by the author and towards the end of the book, I can hear him getting choked up.

I recommend this book for young readers to adults.

    5 out of 5 stars Entertaining...enjoyable....every dog lover .......2007-06-25

a must read - laugh outloud for all dog lovers. I can totally relate to pretty much all of this book, I would read and just look at my dog and say "yes he means you....". Great book.

    2 out of 5 stars Lightweight Book.......2007-06-24

I guess you know in advance that you're setting the literary bar pretty low when you pick up a book about a naughty dog, but I'm a dog lover and thought it would be a nice summer read. It didn't even make that grade.

Marley isn't the world's worst dog, but his behavior rings familiar to most dog owners. He's got a thunderstorm phobia and some separation anxiety. But his greatest obstacle is inconsistent and indulgent behavior of his owners, who let him on the furniture, and into the shower, and don't correct him when he destroys furniture or pulls at his leash. In general, these are easily correctable problems. In fact, when the author finally got serious about teaching the dog not to jump on people, it took only three repetitions of firm behavior to cure him of this bad habit. Too bad the owner didn't do this years earlier, and similarly take the time to correct the dog's other misbehaviors. The title of this book should reflect the owners' failures and not blame the "world's worst dog".

But that's not even the worst part about the book. The book fails because it's simply not very interesting. There are long passages about his wife's menstrual cycles and their attempts to have kids, their sex life and blah blah blah. It's just some couple's daily routine. I mean there's no particular point, or insight, or meaning, or storytelling arc. It's just a lot of domestic stuff. We all live through the same sorts of issues, and it's not terribly interesting to me to read about another couple's issues. This isn't a bad book, just a boring one.

    1 out of 5 stars World's worst dog OWNERS!.......2007-06-19

This book was very upsetting as the owners of Marley repeatedly show their ignorance and cruelty when they repeatedly abuse him and then they had the nerve to make money from it by writing this book. The Grogans even get to a point where they are inviting friends over to kick poor Marley in hopes of training him not to jump. One day Mrs. Grogan is found beating on him after he did something wrong and had to be pulled off of Marley and on a regular basis Mr. Grogan would choke the dog in hopes of getting him to behave. Even as years and same behavior went on they refused to take the dog for proper training. Why? This is the question that is never answered. When a dog misbehaves it is because of improper or lack of training and not because the dog is bad. Don't waste your money on this piece of trash. I feel so bad for the suffering this poor dog endured!

5 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I fell in love. One of the best books that I have read in a long time.......2007-06-18

Following the life of an adorable puppy turned mischievous, full grown, barreling through crowds dog, Marley and Me captures every pet owners dream of having a perfect dog, and their realization that their new found companion is nothing short of a menace. This book captivates both young and old, and it shows that even the most rambunctious dogs can also be the most lovable.

Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.

How do you discover your spouse's - and your own - love language? Chapman's short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like -hoping the feelings of affection will follow later- a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

Get them, read them and live them for as much happiness as life can bring. This is only the fourth book I have recommended this year.

    4 out of 5 stars Read together........2007-06-27

My husband and I got this book in the first few months of our marriage and read it together over the passage of a couple weeks. There were a few parts where we ended up laughing because they are a bit cheesy but over all it really added insite to the whys and hows of realtionship health. We figured out that even though we get along great, we have different ways of showing love and different ways of appreciating love. Over all, it's an eye opening book.

    5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener.......2007-06-27

Very insightful reading. We discovered things about ourselves and each other which had never come to light before. I would recommend this book to any couple, regardless of how long they have been together or how well they think they know each other.

5 out of 5 stars Duh, now I get it!.......2007-06-26

The only complaint I would have about this book is that it makes love and relationships appear a little too simplistic by shoving all behaviors into these five boxes, but....what he says does make alot of sense and now I understand myself and my girlfriend way better than before. Recommended for couples or even for someone just wanting to find out more about themselves.

In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best. --Cindy Crosby

Yes I would say it's PG-13, but even the publisher acknowledged that in the beginning of the book. This book encouraged the reader to look beyond circumstances to see that God loves everyone, even the graphic people. Don't we live in a non-Christian world? Shouldn't we try to bring God's love in where ever we can? Life isn't just bubbles and lollipops, Life is hard and graphic. This book is about taking what is hard and graphic and redeeming it. That's why it's called REDEEMING LOVE! It's about taking the graphic and making it pure. I thought this book was brilliant! And I would recommend it!
