Book Description
What do you do as a single parent when your kids don't want to share you with anyone else - except the person you least want? Single mother Tess is used to having to fight for her disabled son's rights, and is wary of getting too close to men. But Dan, at seventeen, is more independent than she realises, to the extent that he has taken it upon himself to bring his parents back together whether Tess wants it or not. Meanwhile, to their Yorkshire town moves Jack, a widower with a mountain of baggage and a stroppy teenage daughter. In this sparkling novel Donna Hay tackles tough issues with warm-hearted comedy as she writes about love and families - and being some kind of hero...

A winner.......2003-04-05
It's impossible to read Kirkwood and not beg for more. After reading P.S. Your Cat is Dead, I became a fan forever and went on to read Some Kind of Hero, looking forward to what he had in store for us next. Unfortunately, Kirkwood died in 1989. I feel diminished by the loss of such genius in the literary world.
A Necessary Read As You Mature Into Books.......1999-10-27
When I was a boy, maybe 12 or 13, my mother told me I should read this book. For once I listened to her and I did. It was quite an experience. Little another reviewer stated, the book drags you in and captivates you until it is done.
My mom is gone now, but I will always remember her wanting me to read this. One of the best books I have ever read in my life.
C'mon Amazon, find this book and put it back on the shelf so we can get it. ;-)
Absolutely undescribable.......1999-08-29
This book just pulls you in, one second you'll be laughing as hard as possible and turn the page and tears will be streaming down your face. It grabs you by the heart and you can't help but to want everything to work out. To this very day I'll find myself wondering how Eddie's (the main character) doing. It's a must-read for anyone.
Gripping. A great tale. Worth the out-of-print search........1999-07-07
ever since i read "p.s. your cat is dead" (by the same author), i became a james kirkwood fan. he's witty, his writing flows and he creates characters you can't help but care about (i really hate reading a book about characters for whom i feel nothing). since then (about 10 years now), i always search bookstores--right after the massive stephen king section) to see if he's written something new (he hasn't--i just keep hoping).
i did an out of print search to get this one. LOVED IT. i read it cover to cover in one day because it completely sucked me in. it's an excellent story with compelling characters. kirkwood also has a real gift with irony, humor and humanity.
KIRKWOOD: IF BY CHANCE YOU'RE READING THIS, PLEASE WRITE MORE! YOU HAVE SOME DIE HARD FANS OUT HERE (god, i hope this isn't a "p.s. your author's dead" situation!).
Another Kirkwood classic of friendship and the Vietnam War.......1999-05-25
I noticed that this is another of James Kirkwood's novels that is out of print. For any of you searching for his work, include this novel in your search. Although I read it almost 25 years ago in college, I still remember the way it made me feel and the emotions that it dragged up from me. This book will make you laugh and cry, value friendship above all and remind you of the horrors of war. If you have not read James Kirkwood, you are missing out on one of the best authors of the last 30 years! If you enjoy John Irving, you will most likely enjoy James Kirkwood.

Like Some Kind Of Hero.......2006-10-04
I liked this book. Ted is tired of being pushed around, and decides to do something about it. He trys out for the swim team at school. He decides that he would be the best lifeguard// swimmer in his town. He eventually becomes good and starts to become part of the jock group. But he starts to lose focus on who his true friends are, and starts to become something, he joined the swim team to be better than in the first place. It was a fun story that related to kids any where from 7th grade up. I think it was a good book.
A great story that teenagers can relate to in some way........1999-05-18
This book, Like Some Kind Of Hero, is a great book that talks about real life situations. I thought that I could relate to this book, because the kids are around my age, at about 14 years old, and everything that happens could be put in a situation that I could find myself in. Ted is one of the main characters that gets himself into a lot of problems, but he does that by trying to be just like the "popular group." Ted told the story and his troubles as a teenage boy, but at the end the problems seemed to all disappear. I thought the rest of the characters, including Ted, were very well put together. I could not put the book down. Every page was filled with good conversation, so I would just call it a page- turner. If you are interested in reading this great story, I highly would suggest it. It has a touch of humor, sports and romance.
A GOOD AND FUN BOOK.......1998-06-08
Ted and Will are two good friends who want to sign-up to lifeguard practices, they did. On Monday they went to the beach. When they were called, Mr. Stone said that they didn't do a bad job.Ted's mom wrote a note, he made the team. Then he called Will and he also made it. They would meet the next day, along with Aphie, a friend of them. Mr. Mueller, the soccer teacher, was the new teacher, he hated them. Ted and Will went mowing, but it started raining so Ted went home. The next day they went to the beach again and then they went to the pool and met Mr. Capra who gave some advice. When Ted cut's his hair off his family and friends are also shocked. Mr. Mueller started to ask some questions and told Ted to take his hat off. Mr. Mueller liked the cut. Friday the 13 was Ted's worst day ever. He was playing guitar really bad so Mr. Krauss told him he didn't want him as a student anymore. After sometime Ted's dad told Ted that he knew that he wasn't taking guitar classes. It is a fun and easy book to read. The lesson I learned is that the worse thing you can do is to lie. You can't lie at all, here Ted was trying to be someone else. You should read this book and look deep inside on yourself to feel it. This book explains the adolescent life of these kids, and how they want people or friends to think of them.

Some Kind of Cover.......2003-10-03
It was the cover that made me buy the book. And I kept waitiing for the military to arrive. It was distracting. How the heck do they pick these covers anyways. This bring a whole new meaning to "Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover"! The story was OK, just not the military romance I was counting on.
Wonderful read.......2003-09-23
I'm so glad I picked up this suspenseful story, regardless of the fact the cover doesn't match the story. What did Shakespeare say about a rose? The same could be said here for this cover. I found the hero and heroine realistic and compelling and their angsts very touching. Joel Logan finds a woman who'd been adopted years before but knows what he says could destroy all she holds dear. Riane Quinlan is a heart-warming character. I've known women who were adopted out and this one touched my heart.
Great book - odd cover!.......2003-09-01
I really enjoyed this book. Both the hero and heroine were likeable and great characters. The main thing that stopped me from thoroughly enjoying this book was the cover. Why? Because the story line had NOTHING to do with the military yet both characters on the front of the book were wearing military uniforms. Sure, it's just a cover, but many people by a book because of its cover. This shows me that whoever did the cover work obviously didn't read the book.
