Book Description
Lukewarm believer Sam Bennett awakens from a dream to discover that he can hear the deepest spiritual needs of those around him. Frightened at first, he begins to embrace his gift and follow the Spirit's leading, with the result that many lives are touched and led to faith in Christ. In the end, Bennett's life is radically transformed, and his friends, family, and church are forever changed as they begin to "hear" the needs of others as God hears. The Heart Reader is a moving evangelistic challenge for all believers.

This one really woke me up!.......2003-02-27
Though obviously fiction, this book makes one exited about telling others about Jesus.
The Heart Reader.......2003-01-09
The Heart Reader is a very interesting book. I mean it kept me turning the pages, and I loved every minute of it. It really got my spirit on fire it really helped in aiding me in witnessing. It really touched my spirit and made me just want to take out the word of God to all that don't know him, and encourage those that do know. It is kind of a guide in witnessing. I would suggest this book to anyone and everyone that know and don't know God it is. Terri is a great writer she makes you feel every word and I thank God for her being a willing vessel of God.
Interesting Concept.......2002-12-05
I read this book in one setting, and although the idea was a good one...ie.. we all need to evangelize and tell others about Jesus and that He is the One in control, the story bogged down somewhat and was boring in spots. Overall, it was a great idea to get people up and going for Christ. Worth the time to read. Chero'ne author of "Dancing Around the Throne"
The Heart Reader.......2002-11-02
I loved this book, and carry it with me every where I go. Due to heavy work schedule, I read a line or two between events and am facinated with the concept of this story line. Its for anyone who has postponed or have a deep sincere soul desire to break out of their complacency to bear fruit in their life as a soul winner. It is truly a remarkable book and I would love to meet Terri Blackstock or at least have her share how she came to write the book.
Almost a Manual.......2002-09-18
... is a talented Christian writer and this book "The Heart Reader" is almost a manual in how to draw others to Jesus. The story came through as intended but on the whole the narrative was not as captivating as ... other work.
This would be a good book to add to the church library.

Book Description
Darrin Owens calls himself a “reluctant psychic” because growing up in rural Arkansas, he only wanted to fit in. Darrin knew and experienced things that no one in his prosaic world was talking about, especially not at the fundamentalist church he attended. When he rented a movie based on Shirley MacLaine’s Out on a Limb, he discovered who and what he was. A visit to a psychic who recognized his powers further opened his eyes to his own abilities and the spiritual journey that would be his destiny.
According to Darrin, being a psychic isn’t just about “knowing things”; it is also a spiritual practice. This lively, entertaining book offers seven lessons of the spiritual path — including spiritual awakening; conscious creation; attunement; and inner guidance — and relates stories from Darrin’s life to illustrate them. Each chapter addresses one of the lessons and includes exercises, prayers, guided meditations, and affirmations. By turns humorous and poignant, the book offers wisdom and guidance for readers just discovering their spiritual connections and those already accomplished in psychic and spiritual skills.

Don't pass this one up!!.......2007-02-05
In the many years of my personal spiritual path I have read many books and learned a great deal. This book was written from a place honesty and spirit. For those of you who are intuitives like myself, you will find comfort and more validation of your path. Anyone can gain from these insights, experiences, and exercises. This book was written with down to earth humor and complete realness. This was my birthday present to myself this year. I don't suggest, however, waiting for your next special occasion. Two thumbs up to Darrin
Darrin Owens is the REAL DEAL!.......2007-02-04
Wow. This book felt like an authentic and sincere gift from Darrin Owen's heart directly into my own...I was fortunate enough to see Darrin speak several times while he was on tour in San Francisco and there is no denying that the holy spirit is working through this wonderful man in special ways!! His style is entertaining and uplifting, his readings were spot on, and I walked away with tons of spiritual wisdom I was able to directly apply to my life.
Buy the book....and google his website so you can see when/if he is going to be in speaking in your area! He's fabulous and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Go check out his work and decide for yourself. You won't be sorry.
Best Spirtual Reference Book .......2006-08-21
I haven't ever read a spiritual book that delivered itself with such candor. This book gives you a good understanding on how to look towards a more fulfilled life, and makes you want to learn more. I have read the book cover to cover many times and often find myself looking over different chapters so that I can gain a better perspective on life's ups and downs.
Markers on the Path.......2006-08-16
What to do while waiting on the path?
Darrin clearly defines stages of the psychic journey. He also demonstrates where one can obtain the fuel to accomplish the journey remaining. "In other words, divine guidance keeps you manifesting the destiny that is all your own."
The cover design caught my attention. The content spoke wisely to my heart.
With eternity as the background, why should we feel rushed.

Why do teenagers so often seem like a different species? Journalist Patricia Hersch gives a troubling answer in her fascinating, up-close-and-personal look at what it means to be a teen in today's American high schools. Rather than interviewing "high-risk" teens (those already swept up in a cycle of drug use, gang violence, or unintended pregnancy, for example), Hersch focuses her attention on "regular kids"--adolescents who are average achievers on academic and social levels. In light of this, A Tribe Apart is all the more startling to read: Hersch's investigative approach makes it impossible for parents to shrug off their responsibilities by saying "That's not my kid." This is your kid.
Hersch offers readers a fly-on-the-wall perspective as she spends three years hanging out with eight youths, submerging herself in their environment. They struggle with all the things you might remember or expect from the teen years: figuring out relationships, establishing friendships, determining what's cool and uncool, experiencing sexual attraction. But these teens--and, as Hersch asserts, the majority of teens in America today--have much, much more piled on their plates. Having been left to their own devices by a preoccupied, self-involved, and "hands-off" generation of parents, adolescents have had to figure out their own system of ethics, morals, and values, and rely on each other for advice on such profound topics as abuse, dysfunctional parents, and sex (with all its accompanying ramifications). Adolescents are indeed "a tribe apart," but not by choice--adult society abandons them long before they ever get the chance to rebel against it.
A wake-up call for all parents and teenagers, this essential book is also hopeful. Hersch urges us not to be afraid of teenagers--even if they have piercings and tattoos and strange hair--because what they really, truly want is a little guidance, attention, and love. --Brangien Davis
Book Description
For three fascinating, disturbing years, writer Patricia Hersch journeyed inside a world that is as familiar as our own children and yet as alien as some exotic culture--the world of adolescence. As a silent, attentive partner, she followed eight teenagers in the typically American town of Reston, Virginia, listening to their stories, observing their rituals, watching them fulfill their dreams and enact their tragedies. What she found was that America's teens have fashioned a fully defined culture that adults neither see nor imagine--a culture of unprecedented freedom and baffling complexity, a culture with rules but no structure, values but no clear morality, codes but no consistency.
Is it society itself that has created this separate teen community? Resigned to the attitude that adolescents simply live in "a tribe apart," adults have pulled away, relinquishing responsibility and supervision, allowing the unhealthy behaviors of teens to flourish. Ultimately, this rift between adults and teenagers robs both generations of meaningful connections. For everyone's world is made richer and more challenging by having adolescents in it.
Customer Reviews:
A Tribe Apart.......2007-05-15
A very interesting and captivating book. The best alternative to a text for a graduate level Adolecent Behavior course.
compelling.......2007-02-05
Partrica Hersch is on a mission. In her book A Tribe Apart, an in-depth study of the lives, behaviors, and opinions of eight adolescents, Hersch argues that today's teenagers are victims of an uncaring, un-involved adult community. Hersch's teens, for the most part, raise themselves. They grapple with adult-sized problems such as abortion, drug use, crime, physical abuse, and neglect--all while facing the "normal" slings and arrows of adolescence. Teens solve the problems they face with very little adult interaction, with the educators, parents, and other adult mentors conspicuously absent. Hersch concludes that today's teens don't exist in a moral vacuum, as social critics might suggest. Instead, she presents teens who reason, debate, and make choices--all without adult guidance or support. The adults who populate the teens' worlds are neglectful--ranging from abusive stepparents, over-worked mothers, self-absorbed fathers, or educators more concerned with discipline and control than forming relationships with kids. It is little wonder that the decisions they make are poor ones. While I do agree with other reviewers that Hersch makes wide-sweeping generalizations about teens and their relationships to adults based upon a limited sample, her point that teens are facing increasingly trecherous problems alone is well-taken. It's easy to feel demoralized after reading A Tribe Apart, and one wonders how adolescence will continue to devovle in the coming decade.
A look from inside.......2006-12-06
I've seen people say this book does not cover the mainstream or is not the best read, but I would disagree. Hersch takes the time to listen, to let 8 students tell their story. I was in high school at the time when this book was being published, and it is much more accurate that most adults care to realize. It is a narrative, but it is an accurate look at the millennial generation. The only other book that I have seen to compete in accuracy would be 'Hurt' by Chap Clark, but it is more of an academic read. Anyway, if you care for an inside look of adolescence, here is your chance.
Easy read, But Not Revolutionary.......2006-05-11
A Tribe Apart by Patricia Hersch was a revolutionary book for its time period: 1996. Now, ten years later, I am not sure if the information presented is all that revolutionary. The research for this book was completed when I was in middle and high schools, and now I am the teacher, so how can many of the issues be as new and extreme if I, and many teachers I know, have experienced many of these issues already? Hersch does an excellent job exposing the "normalities" of high school students in the mid 1990's; I am curious if a current study would reveal the same findings. The themes she explores that I do not think have faded away with the turn of the century are the distance between adults and adolescents, the multitude of adult issues our adolescents have to cope with, and the need for peer acceptance over all other needs.
While at the same time deserting our adolescent generation, Hersch says that society has also managed to load them with adult responsibilities. Teens are more often aware of their parents problems, and are being forced to deal with issues far beyond their capabilities. I see that these issues have not faded with time in my conversation with my students. Some of my sixth graders tell me stories about being evicted from apartments or their parents' credit card debt, and I can see that Hersch's research still rings true.
Despite the latter basic truths to Hersch's research, she describes many outdated practices of adolescents such as "mosh pits", the "wamma" culture, the clothing, and the attitudes of some of the students. I think that some of many practices she explored have been replaced with more dangerous and exaggerated ones: rap culture, "hanging out" on the streets for younger and younger students, and increased exposure to societal pressures. In the 1990's, I feel like there were more opportunities for adolescents to thrive and experience life in safe environments. Now, the budget cuts that Hersch mentions very briefly are a country-wide phenomenon. Schools everywhere are experiencing cuts of after-school clubs, music, art, physical education, and sports; not just city schools. This pushes our adolescents further and further into their own world, making Hersch's findings only the beginning. Now, I think that a researcher would find the danger has escalated and children younger than what would be considered "adolescence" are experiencing these kinds of problems.
The way Hersch engulfs herself inside the life of each of her case studies, makes the reader feel as if the adolescents themselves were telling their own stories. So if you are looking for an interesting and entertaining sociological text, A Tribe Apart is a great read. But if you interested in getting a peek inside the minds of your students or teenage kids, I suggest you pick up a more recent text.
A Tribe Apart.......2006-03-07
This book gives a wonderful glimpse into the teenage lives of 8 teens ranging from a young middle schooler to a senior in high school. The author does a great job making you feel like you have inhabited the body, mind, and spirit of each one. It is great book for anyone working or living with 12-18 year olds to explore what is going on in their lives. I bought it for my professional library at my school for parents to read.

Customer Reviews:
Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book series is great for kids.......2006-07-18
The Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book series is great. It is the right amount of information and the right level for young readers. My first grader read 200 books last school year and it was nice to know she was learning about her world at the same time. She read this and other books from the series to my four year old who also retained much of the information.
Hear Your Heart.......2005-12-02
This book has captivated my 4 1/2 year old son. (My 8 year old daughter likes it, too) My son actually stood up in preschool yesterday (he is normally quiet) and taught the class details of how the heart works and the parts of the heart. His teacher's were amazed that he was sharing something, so they let him teach. We have to read this book over and over again.
Can you hear your heart?.......2004-11-07
An introduction into how the heart works along with feeling your pulse and listening to a hearts beat with amusing illustrations reader can imitate and view diagrams of the heart.
My son frequently will tell me he can hear his heart once he rests after playing around. I figured he would enjoy exploring the activities among the last two pages in Hear Your Heart like How to Measure Your Heart Rate and How to Make a Stethoscope.
There are several kids, adults and babies illustrated among the thirty-three pages of Hear Your Heart in various settings as well as illustrations of the heart in pink, red and black colors. The areas are identified to which is a vein and artery with other illustrations showing arrows in how the heart actually beats.
Hear Your Heart begins with a girl at the Doctor's office showing a real stethoscope that is cold and making the girl shiver. She much prefers her homemade stethoscope made out of a cardboard tube. There are a few pages showing the girl and her sister listening to each other's heart and then other kids doing the same thing.
Hear Your Heart is easy to follow written in a way that kids can understand and comprehend based on the detailed illustrations. The style Hear Your Heart is written in offers all the answers that my child has along the way. This encourages my son to watch the second hand while he counts how many times his heart beats in one minute. There are times we learn like when exercising that the pace will be faster. Also noted is the ninety times a minute for an eight-year old. This is now a figure my son is striving to reach. A man's will be in the area of seventy-two while an infant is around one hundred twenty times a minute.
My son is much more aware of his heart and pulse rate and wants to check everyone that he comes in contact with, including his teddy bear. The activities enhance the book so it becomes more than just a reading tool but an overall learning experience. These books focus on the grades from one to three within the age group of six to nine.
My kids love it!.......2003-11-30
This book has an experiment that worked. My 8-year-old daughter likes the book a lot. My 5-year-old son likes the book because the book teaches him how to hear his heart.

Sagebrush Brides.......2007-03-10
I truly enjoyed this book. The charactors were fascinating and it made you wish that you lived in that era
A great read for a day to be spent by the fire.......2005-12-27
My friend gave me this book for Christmas and after my family had opened all of their presents, I sat down and began to read this book of 4 stories; 3 hours later, when I finished the book, I was glad I had gotten the book. I totally recommend this story by Carol Cox.
It is actually 4 stories together in one book. It is based on two families: The Bradleys and The Canfields.
1st Story: This is called Journey Toward Home; the main character is Judith Alder-she travels out west and meets up with the Bradleys and says at their ranch where she tries to discover what she should do next in her life.
2nd Story: This is called The Measure of a Man; this story follows Lizzie Bradley (she was also in the first story as a little girl) as a grown woman growing up and experiencing love and trying to find true love. (This story was my favorite.)
3rd Story: This story features the Canfields and is called Season of Hope; Rachel is the oldest Canfield sister and when Ike Canfield, her father, the weight of running their farm turns to her and it is up to her to try and keep the farm running and pay off soem debts her father left unpaid and take care of her younger sister Rachel. Along the way, she accepts help from one of her father's friends, and, well...just read it to find out what happens.
4th Story: This story is called Cross my Heart; this story is the final story and ends up drawing the two families together. Willie Bradley was unwilling been volunteered to take three orphaned children to their guadian after their parents have died. He, because of the children, ends up meeting Violet Canfield and they expereince many different trials together.
All of these stories are placed in the New Mexico/Arizona area; I found the characters relateable and nothing of the story seemed too far fetched-well perhaps some of what the three orphaned children did in the last story-to tell the truth, I didn't like those kids at all. But this was a very enjoyable read.

Mouth watering!.......2007-06-02
This book is awesome! Very few ingredients are needed and ALL of them you can find at a grocery store. Mouth watering pictures show you what it is suppose to look like. Has many breakfast and appetizer recipes along with many other dinner and desser recipes. Has nutritional values for each recipe, tells pre times, cook times, and how many it serves. Plus, I like how each recipe has a 'Health Hint' and a little history about the recipe...'Way Back When' and also 'Secret to Success'. I highly recommend this recipe book and I use it constantly! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Faye's review .......2007-03-09
This is an easy to read book considering it contains medical conditions and unfamiliar medical terms. The authors took great care to describe each medical term and included excellent pictures to show what is happening in your heart that will lead to a heart attack. The book is meant for laypersons, but health professionals would also benefit from reading it.
The authors present the 7 causes of heart attacks. The number one cause is smoking, the other causes in order of importance include: an increase in cholesterol (LDL), high blood presssure, excess body fat, metabolic syndrome (includes diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and other conditions), oxidative stress (free radicals), chronic inflammation. Each cause is described in easy to follow facts accompanied by pictures. Under each cause there is a section called "Viability of Self-treatment" which describes how you can help heal your heart. and a section called "Standard Medical Care" which explains the medical care you will likely receive.
The book's main purpose is to present you with a plan to keep your heart healthy. There is a plan discussing the healthy foods you should eat, and the unhealthy foods you should avoid. The benefits of the healthy foods and the harm of each unhealthy food is carefully described. In the chapter "Super Foods to the Rescue" the importance of diet is stressed giving you a list of eighteen healthy foods to eat. Menus and recipes that include these foods are an important part of this book. A list of foods to shop for to have a healthy fridge and cupboard are also presented here.
The importance of activity is presented as well. It is also easy to follow with pictures and encouragers. The activities do not expect you to climb mountains or take up cross country skiing, but show you how every day household chores are activities. The importance of stretching exercises, strengthing exercises, and easy aerobic exercises are discussed. Yoga and other methods of meditation are included here to help with stress control as stress is a contributor to heart attacks.
I recommend this book to everyone. If you are young or old and are healthy you will learn how to prevent a heart attack. If you are struggling with obesity and don't understand why obesity leads to heart attacks this is the book for you. Reaading this book may give you the insentive to help yourself to better health. Even if you already have heart disease this book will be useful in assisting you to help yourself to healthier heart.

Book Description
When Jake Sheffield, a typical Christian teenager, awakens to discover that he can hear the deepest spiritual needs of those around him, the reality of the deep needs of the world hits him. And the lives he touches, through the help of the Holy Spirit, will never be the same. As his friends witness the power of sharing Christ with others, they too begin the "hear" like Jake. The Heart Reader of Franklin High is a moving, evangelistic challenge for Christian teens.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book.......2006-10-29
This book was amazing. It made me grow in the Lord by helping me realize that i don't witness enough. We have opportunities every day and we don't use them. I would recommend this book to anyone, even if they don't believe in the Lord. This is a truely amazing novel, by a truely amazing author.
A great Christian teen read.......2005-01-23
I found this book very inspirational to my Christian walk. The teenage boy in this story becomes a powerful witness for God, rising above criticism from friends and fear of rejection. It left a lasting impression on me about not judging others by the way they look or act, because they may be hurting and need help, but can't or won't ask for it. This book gave me the desire to be that sort of Christian who witnesses to others. Everyone who reads this will enjoy the writing, characters and plot, and want to pass it along to all the Christian teenagers and young adults that they know.
