THE SECRET may be the "hot" DVD and book out now, but
to truly appreciate it, you should read THE LAW OF ATTRACTION:
THE BASICS OF THE TEACHINGS OF ABRAHAM by Esther and
Jerry Hicks.

The authors take the basic concept--that which is like unto itself
is drawn--and help you both understand and apply it via a series
of examples that relate to all aspects of life . . . for example:

* Have you noticed that those who speak most of illness have
more and more illness? Have you noticed that those who
speak of poverty live more of it, while those who speak of
prosperity have more of it? As you understand that your
thoughts are magnetic and your attention to them causes
them to grow in power until eventually the subject of the
thought becomes the subject of your experience, your
willingness to pay attention to the way you feel will help
you more deliberately choose the direction of your thought.

Although I've heard this notion many times, I found myself
wondering how come I fall back at times into what might
be considered negative thinking . . . so to deal with that,
the Hicks recommend some words that could be used to
help a variety of things--including perfect help:

* I want perfect health! I like feeling good. I enjoy
my good-feeling body. I have many positive memories of
feeling good in my body. I see many people who are clearly
in a state of good health, and it is easy to see how much they
are enjoying their good-feeling bodies. When I think thoughts
like these, I feel good. These thoughts are in harmony with
a healthy body.

More joy in your life can be obtained, too . . . all you need to
do is consider that:

* When joy is really important to you, you do not allow yourself
to focus upon things that do not feel good--and the result
of thinking only thoughts that feel good would cause you to
create a wonderful life filled with all things that you desire.

This may sound basic to many, but believe me it works . . . a key
is to keep in mind that:

* In this unlimited Universe, there need be no competition
for resources, for the resources are unlimited. You may deprive
yourself of receiving them, and therefore perceive a shortage,
but it is really of your own making.

Please don't deprive yourself of these resources . . . to begin
accumulating them, start by reading THE LAW OF ATTRACTION.

I enjoyed this book. I bought it because it contains some very useful practical psychological tools for handling thoughts. So far I'm enjoying the application of the tools offered here. However, I don't agree with several of the suppositions of this book:

Our minds have many complex levels. This book primarily deals with the conscious thinking mind - the thoughts we are consciously aware of. This book assumes our conscious minds are always stronger than our subconscious minds. That may be the case with some, but it is not with others. The subconscious levels of our mind and energy fields is where karma and negative energy from past lives, disease, soul contracts, etc. reside. People have lived different lives making different decisions.

FREE will: this book does not talk enough about free will and its impact. God created our world and we were given free will to do as we want, but we must suffer the consequences of our choices which leads to

Karma: the whole purpose of reincarnation is to balance our energy and learn new lessons. I don't think reincarnation makes much sense if its separated from karma. What would be the purpose of being reborn? How can we learn certain lessons if we don't experience the result of those lessons. Reincarnation isn't' just about learning cute little lessons inhabiting a new body. It's is also about balancing energies and receiving some of the stuff we've sent out. Most of us are not born with memories of past lives. IN fact the western mind is strongly programmed against it. So, if there's a coming karmic debt its possible that a person may focus the mind of positive thoughts but not transform negative energy from the past. This energy remains with us and attracts karmic circumstances.

Evil: no it doesn't truly exist, but it has a temporary existence on this planet. Some have karmic circumstances that allow them to be okay if they simply ignore it. Simlpy praying and using affirmations won't help others. Some need varying levels of deliverance, healing, rosaries, etc. for personal transformation.

Poor links to science. I don't like that this book does not include Einsteins theory of relativity and other aspects of quantum/particle physics to explain some of this stuff. Everything is energy which can neither be created nor destroyed. (There are many books that delve into this including Kim Michaels books.)

Finally, I completely disagree with the premise that we cause everything that happens to us. In my opinion, life is a result of our thoughts, karma and the free will of others.

Reservations aside, I think this book will help raise the consciousness of society. Even if people aren't open to this kind of thing, what would it hurt to start thinking positively and controlling the emotions? I hope millions will read and actively apply the concepts of such books.

In closing I would recommend this book, but keep searching. For the adept I highly recommend any of Kim Michaels (especially Master Keys to the Abundant Life or Save Your Planet: Mother Mary's Handbook for World Transformation, et al) or if your brave and want to read some controversial indepth answers to life visit askrealjesus.com. I also strongly suggest Rabbi David Aaron's: The Secret Life of God: Discovering the Divine within You. We are fortunate to have such great inspirational literature.

All of creation first takes place in the mind. YHVH first had the thought and then spoke His Creation into existence. Obviously, His Creation was brought about for His (e-motion) called pleasure.

As a baby, a wet diaper brought about the sensation of discomfort and that provoked the emotion that caused the baby to cry. The same with hunger, heat or cold...

Without the thought and the emotion, maybe the baby would never awaken, move, cry, nor do anything at all--even his waking up and crying is a creation of his own doing. When I say `his own doing', I am speaking of the spirit within him, the real him. The body was uncomfortable. The spirit within the body knows that it has the duty to care for and preserve the body in which it resides.

Why wouldn't the Spirit within my body attempt to guide my body and brain to do all of the things which It (My Spirit) came here to do.

How can I pull myself out of depression except by consciously appreciating the things and relationships that I have? When I train my brain to do that, My Spirit responds by lifting up and changing my whole direction of negativity.

The book answers a lot of questions for me; like negative events that occur in spurts. For instance: the Postal killings; the fast food restaurant killings; the school massacres; serial killings and rapists; rashes of wild weather, tsunamis, tornados, and fires. Then there are also the health issues and surgeries. Everyone you know has a heart attack, then high cholesterol, then prostrate problems, sinus problems, ovarian cysts, carpal tunnel, cancer, and on and on. The point is, first it's one problem, then another, then another. I believe the authors, that the problems are created by all of the attention and emotion that is focused on them by so many people at one time.

The very first part of this book, where the authors explain how and where they got their information is the only part that does not set right with me. However, I do not believe the info was received from evil spirits and I do not believe that for a Child of God to be always expanding is contrary to God's Will for us. His own Creation is always expanding.

I admit there are a lot of things that I don't know, but just because I wasn't reared to know or experience them, doesn't mean that I'm going to close the door on something that God is trying to teach me or bring into my experience.

Most of the time, I am pretty hard on myself for not accomplishing as much (and as fast) as I think I should. As I think of this, is it the real inner me, scolding so that I will not misuse any valuable holy time here on this Earth?

I use the techniques offered in this book. It is well worth owning and keeping. Abraham is always so positive and really keeps you on track to mainfest whatever you desire.

I am a non native speaker, and even though my grammar is not too bad, my writing style has always been a source of frustration. At work, when comparing the texts I would write with the one of good native writers, I could see that theirs were better, but could not find why.
I bought this book based on the high reviews it got on amazon, and I was not disappointed. After reading a few pages, I scanned the research proposal I was writing at the time, and could already make significant improvements on it. The advices that the author give are sometimes quite simple, especially at the beginning of the book (for example : the main character should be the subjects of the verbs, which themselves should correspond to the main action). But surprisingly, I realized that I was rarely applying these simple rules of clarity. The author is never dogmatic, and insists that the only thing that matters is that the reader easily understands what we're writing. All throughout the book, numerous examples illustrate the concepts just introduced so that it is quite easy to test whether one has really got the point.

I found an used copy of " The Basics of Clarity and Grace" at bookstore. After reading 3/4 of the book I ordered two more copies. One copy for my son who is a journalist major and the other for my eldest son who writes good comedy. I liked its size and its no nonesense approach.

Better than Strunk & White, better than Turabian.......2005-12-19

The longer version of Joseph Williams "Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace" has been justly praised for many years. But as a director of writing programs at NYU, Princeton, and Yale, I never felt right adopting that text: it was too expensive, and more than the average student needed. This "Basics" Style is the perfect solution. All the brilliance of the longer book at 1/3 the price, "Style" perfectly balances explanations of style rules with practical examples. The rules that Strunk and White encourage are good ones, and American prose would be leaner if their precepts were universal. The problem with that book is that the advice is not explained systematically. You can use their suggestions when you face similar cases, but only Williams' text breaks down topics like elegance, coherence, and cohesion in ways that will let you carry the ideas into every text you write. I would not recommend this book for the casual 10th grader; although it's clearly written, its ideas are somewhat advanced. But for professionals, college writers, and any teenager who takes writing seriously, "Style" is an indispensable tool, a book you'll use for the rest of your life. For learning to write good college papers, I also highly recommend his "Craft of Research."

How Style Ought to Be Taught.......2005-07-13

Teaching style is not an easy task. Just look at the number of books on the market that portend to do this task, and it becomes obvious that not all authors succeed in their efforts. Some manuals attempt to teach by rules, others by persuasion, and still others by example. This book takes all three approaches and illustrates that the art of stylistic writing is a matter of know-how. Unlike most books in the field, I find this one generally successful.

The book's method is heuristic. It begins with causes of bad writing, and progresses to clarity, cohesion, emphasis, coherence, concision, length, and elegance. Each principle is given a bad examples compared to a good one. Direct, subject-verb-object writing is extolled, and certain anathemas of other texts are approved under the right circumstances. While I disagree with one its principles: That it is acceptable to begin a sentence with "There" and "It," these are minor quibbles in an otherwise strongly argued case.

Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" now has a major competitor, and this book is it. Whether one writes in fiction or non-fiction, the principles and examples given throughout this book are to be commended. I know of one author, a philosopher, who took these principles to heart. What once was ambiguous and contorted writing is now lucid, clear, and vivid. If this book can make this kind of progress, I certainly recommend it to all writers.

While on the subject of good writing, I also recommend Corbett's "Classical Rhetoric" for those authors who want to write convincing arguments. One on style, the other on substance. While William's book on style will make prose more readable, Corbett's book will make it more intelligible.

Truly great, smaller but updated version of his bigger book.......2004-01-24

This smallish book summarizes and updates "Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace (7th Edition)." I rank both books at least a "5 out of 5" ranking. I bought the "Style: Ten Lessons" book first and after reading his previous book, I wanted more from this author. This new book is a fitting treat; it is destined to be a classic in the field of writing.

This smaller 150 page book presents many easy-to-apply principles and, for me, were easier to understand.

The principles that I liked most were:

+ How nominalizations can be very good or very bad, depending on their purpose, or lack of it.
+ How to re-arrange sentences putting the new and most important ideas on the end; thus sometimes flipping the sentence around and making good use of the passive tense.
+ The importance of aligning the characters of your story with the subjects of your sentences, and using active verbs to make "interesting subjects do interesting things."
+ Why and how to keep the distance between subject, verb and object short.

There are many, many other writing principles that you will find very useful. Although this book is written for someone with writing experience, a beginner will also find it MOST helpful.

I recommend any budding writer to buy both books. The bigger, older book has more discussion. But I found this smaller, newer book easier to read and understand. I'm now reading his Craft of Research book, and it looks like a winner too.

This is an author whose books you should collect. He has become a highly recommended expert in the field of writing. Look at the reviews of the bigger book to see what others are saying. I am so happy that I found his books.

Having taught technical writing, workplace communications, and business English at three different institutions--community college, four-year institution, and private university--and possessing an earned doctorate with an English minor, I find Searle's textbook user friendly, relevant, and functionally practical for nontraditional students, particularly those seeking applied science associate degrees that are terminal. Each of the 10 chapters relate to written and spoken communicative tasks that are required on the job for most persons employed in skilled and paraprofessional positions. The format of the text is inviting and varied without being cluttered or obtrusive. Every community and technical college should consider this text for nontraditional "technical" or business writing courses.

A better title for this book might be The Indispensable Writings of Nietzsche. Indeed, the six selections contained in Walter Kaufmann's volume are not only critical elements of Nietzsche's oeuvre, they are must-reads for any aspiring student of philosophy. Those coming to Nietzsche for the first time will be pleased to find three of his best-known works--The Birth of Tragedy, Beyond Good and Evil, and On the Genealogy of Morals--as well as a collection of 75 aphorisms drawn from Nietzsche's celebrated aphoristic work. In addition, there are two lesser known, but important, pieces in The Case of Wagner and Ecce Homo. Kaufmann's lucid and accurate translations have been the gold standard of Nietzsche scholarship since the 1950s, and this volume does not disappoint.

Anyone who has slogged their way through the swamps of German philosophical writing---in Kant or Hegel or Heidegger--will find Nietzsche a refreshing and exhilarating change. Nietzsche IS the greatest philosopher of modern times, and this anthology is the perfect place to start if you're a student or new to Nietzsche. It's also a great bargain and collects several works together that one would be spending extra money on to get separately. I strongly reccomend this, as the works in here ( especially the Geneology of Morals, and Beyond Good and Evil) are key. I have been highly satisfied with this purchase and I recommen buying this along with Viking's Portable Nietzsche.

Flashes of Genius.......2006-10-22

I picked up this book to get a feel for Nietzsche and have reviewed several commentaries on the other works available on or translated from Nietzsche. For those of you who are not intimately familiar with his work, let me summarize what I've learned:

From a modern point of view, Nietzsche is racist, sexist, anti-religious (including Jews, Christians/Catholics, etc.), and sometimes even anti-German. Given this concise but inflammatory list, you can imagine why very few people get over their critical anger and stop to figure out if there's anything worthwhile left in his work. If you can come to terms with the fact that much of this attitude is a relic of his times (pre WWII Germany) and skim by this material without getting hostile to his body of work as a whole, there is a lot of valuable insight in his works.

To this book specifically, Kaufmann is well regarded as one of the best translators of Nietzsche's work, derived particularly from his fluency in both German and English. As a native German speaker, he understands all the subtle aspects of Nietzsche's artistic writing style. When Kaufmann translates this into English, he remains extremely fluent but is willing to translate the subtexts plainly, to the benefit of readers who might not otherwise understand those subtexts.

To be fair Kaufmann is also criticized (by some) as a mediocre philosopher who showed unrestrained favor to Nietzsche, going so far as to attack Nietzsche's critics both with his reviews and his power in the philosophical community. While this opinion of Kaufmann may or may not be true, this book relies primarily on Kaufmann's translation and not his commentary, making the concern largely moot.

With a fair mind, Nietzsche's writings make a few major philosophical contributions:
-The greatest is certainly his master-slave framework of morality including the philosophical term/concept ressentiment. See wikipedia for an overview.
-Nietzsche offers an interesting commentary on art and decadence which I believe is enlightening though poorly communicated.
-He also makes some characterizations of "the masses," their desires, and their leaders (embodied in priests of the church). Especially when generalized/taken out of its anti-Christian framework, this discussion is an interesting perspective on what "the masses" really want and how their leaders operate. When we replace "the priest" with any modern populist, I found the comments especially relevant even today.
-No doubt there are others, but these have struck me particularly.

In summary, Nietzsche's work contains a number of very powerful ideas, often lost in the soup of controversial and inaccurate comments. If you try to analyze Nietzsche's concepts as complete units, they will come out as dated and consequently of little modern value. If you are willing **and able** to read Nietzsche for his flashes of genius, many of the elements of his work are timeless and should be integrated into your understanding of philosophy and "truth" -- and if you read Nietzsche, you'll realize that this is put in quotes for a very specific reason.

Oh How I Love this Book!!!!.......2006-06-16

The Basic Writings of Nietzsche, ah one of my dear, dear friends, this book contains, in their entirety, The Birth of Tragedy (1872, 1886), Beyond Good and Evil (1886), Genealogy of Morals (1887), The Case of Wagner, and my personal favorite, Ecce Homo, (both 1888). It also contains selected aphorisms from Nietzsche's transitional period (1878-1882), that is aphorisms from the book Human, All-Too Human (1878), its two sequels - Mixed Opinions and Maxims (1879) and The Wanderer and his Shadow (1880), The Dawn, or Daybreak (1881) and, of course, The Gay Science (1882), the book in which Nietzsche first coined his "God is Dead" fraise for which he is so famous (and infamous).

Also, there is priceless commentary by not only the editor of the book, the great Professor Walter Arnold Kaufmann, but modern philosophers such as Martin Heideggar, Albert Camus (probably my favorite philosopher besides Dostoevsky), and Gilles Deleuze.

I would advise the newcomer to Nietzsche not to start with this volume though. The best and most compact edition with selections from all of those books and others (including Thus Spoke Zarathustra) in their entirety is Kaufmann's The Portable Nietzsche. The latter volume also contains Nietzsche's priceless letters he wrote to his friends after he went insane in 1889.

A Near-Flawless Compendium of Nietzsche's Work.......2006-05-23

Nietzsche is really more than a philosopher. His writings blend concise poetry, historical exploration, powerful philosophy and skeptical analysis. All these elements are linked together into vigorous rants, just focused enough to be academic while free-flowing enough to be enjoyable. In a mere 100 pages, he can change the way you think about the history of man, while squeezing in wit along the way. Nietzsche wasn't a perfect writer; he was sometimes too grandiose, with recurrent tones of mysogyny. But I'd nonetheless recommend Nietzsche to almost anyone, and I'd recommend this book as a starting point.

Of the included works, Beyond Good and Evil and it's companion, On the Genealogy of Morals, are the centerpiece. They contain his basic world view. Ecce Homo is another good inclusion; though it's rather cryptic, it represents his parting words. Decoding some of the symbolism may be difficult (and prone to interpretation), but you'll be rewarded with a cemented viewpoint from all angles on who Nietzsche was- and more importantly, what he wasn't.

The Birth of Tragedy and The Case of Wagner are somewhat peripheral to the philosophy Nietzsche is known for. But since Nietzsche's writings are varied, inclusion of some of his "side-interest" writing helps new readers form a complete picture. This edition of the book is well translated, and the marginal notes throughout make it relatively accessable to those unfamiliar with German philosophy. Also, Peter Gay immediately takes on the inevitable accusations of racism, shedding light on why average people should allow themselves to enjoy Nietzsche books.

All this book is missing, as an essential primer, is "Thus Spake Zarathustra". Zarathustra has some conceptual crossover with Beyond Good and Evil, but it's simply the perfect starting point for his work- certainly far superior to "The Birth of Tragedy" in that respect. Between this book and Zarathustra, you'd have enough Nietzsche to keep you thinking for a very, very long time.

Very Valuable Reading........2006-03-14

I have nothing profound to say about this book, simply that I am a college student and it has been my pleasure to read this collection of Nietzsche's works. It has given me insight that I would be afraid of living without, now that I've consumed the knowledge contained within. I not only recommend this book to anyone that likes to learn, I give it high priority.

Nietzsche (or should I say Kaufmann?) writes in a way that the pieces are not only useful but somewhat entertaining. Thus, it was a pleasure.

"Writing Excel Macros with VBA" is an excellent book on the use of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) for Microsoft Excel. Steven Roman provides a significant amount of information in a relatively short volume.

While this book is accessible to Excel users of a variety of skill levels, it is best suited to numerically-inclined and experienced users of Excel. The book offers a good introduction to the VBA programming environment and the Excel object model.

Steven Roman has written the best book on Excel VBA that I have read to date.

Good Reference.......2005-06-07

This is a very specialized book with a very specialized core audience and this text does what it says it does -- teach you how to write Excel Macros using VBA. Nothing too exciting here folks, very dry reading that is a necessary reference if you need to have more control over Excel than the everyday user does.

I remember long ago when I needed to work on building some installers and I had never worked with Installshield before. There was one book on the market that was helpful in completing this task, and there is a very close correlation here as well. There simply is not enough of a market to provide a wide variety of different books to choose from when needing to learn how to write Excel macros. Any user would want a book that helps them complete their task at hand and this book gets my seal of approval in helping to do just that.

Mr Roman is an extremely competent and clear writer. This book, whilst not as big as some, doesn't waste space with any padding, and boring repititious stuff you see in some texts.
Although there could have been a little more on interplay between Excel and the other Office objects, esp. Outlook, this book makes up for that with its clear, organised and logical presenatation.

I use it as a reference book, and seem to remember the content of it more clearly than I do with other comparable books! Why is this? Mr Roman has a tidy turn of phrase, doesn't wafffle, but his explanations seem to sit well in how my mind works. I hope this will be the same for you.

I recommend this book for those who may be beyond the beginner stage of learning VB(A). It also includes some handy utilities for users of Excel.

Mr Roman - well done. Look forward to your next (high level?) Excel VBA book.

Not a good primary reference.......2004-09-14

I was looking for a primary reference for the Excel object model. I have years of programming experience, some VB, and was looking for something to get me started programming Excel VBA. This book is not suitable as a primary reference. Much better are either Power Programming (Walkenbach) or Excel VBA (Bovey) which contain many useful tips and gotchas that helped me out of a few baffling situations. Roman's book seemed to focus on the few examples he developed, rather than be a resource for problems a beginning/intermediate Excel programmer was likely to encounter.

Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

I am in graduate school and read this for class--while I think it's interesting, I think it's a difficult read unless you're actively teaching. Read it if you find yourself teaching Basic Writing (BW) students, are interested in learning more about the social aspects of BW students (i.e. how the lower echelon of students feel about its treatment vs. those students in higher tracks) or the psychology of the student in general. If you are going to use it, it might be best to focus initially on what you are strongest in, i.e. syntax, grammar, spelling. While overall I found it interesting in theory, it was a difficult read and hard to grab practical information from it.

I can't agree with Dr. Bruce Leeds more. This is THE book for the teachers of basic writers. Also, it is food for thought for ESL writing teachers. This book is a classic. I am waiting for another equivalent classic for an ESL writing teacher like me.

With the patience and attention to detail of a saint, Professor Shaughnessy hunted, and found, patterns in her students' writing that allowed her to lift each student to his or her true potential. This is THE book for the teacher of basic, first-language writing. Her prose is stunning in itself and is a model for the kind of clear, elloquent writing she would espouse. Certainly the best of its kind and as yet to be equalled.

In the dry world of composition theory, Shaughnessy's brilliantdiscussion of error in student writing stands as a landmark. Aftertwenty-plus years, this book remains highly readable and one of the half dozen most important books in the field. I particularly admire the writer's refusal to slip into the pseudo-scientific jargon that typifies the trendy, flimsy, unreadable literature that comprises the field of composition. Anyone who teaches writing at a high school or college level would benefit from reading this fine book.
