LaCie 321 Monitor 21.3" LCD Panel (108368)
Manufacturer: Lacie
Product Type: CE
Editorial Review:
Product Description
The LaCie 321 Monitor offers a color gamut previously achievable only on CRT monitors. The broad gamut of colors displayed is a wide 72% of the NTSC (National Television System Committee) video standards gamut. With 10-bit gamma correction, the LaCie 321 also provides the finest caliber of gamma control, expressly engineered for serious graphics professionals. Whereas traditional 8-bit gamma allows for only 256 tonal options, 10-bit gamma expands the tonal range to 1024, smoothing color gradation and vastly improving image precision and accuracy. In a side-by-side comparison with other TFTs this panel exhibits superior color clarity most obvious in pure white, pitch black, and saturated color areas. Unprecedented color rendering combined with excellent contrast ratio (500: 1) and brightness (250 cd/m2), and expansive viewing angles (176?) offers graphic artists the advantage of premium viewing conditions. The LaCie 321 Monitor offers a large 21.3-inch diagonal for viewing A3 or double-page spreads in exact 1: 1 ratio. Its superb 1600x1200 resolution ensures that even the most minute details can be displayed, so that what is seen on the monitor is what will appear in print. The LaCie 321's position can be customized to fit any work environment through height-adjustment, tilt, swivel, and pivot capabilities. For the most demanding color-related tasks, such as photo retouching and on-screen proofing, the LaCie monitor hood ensures that external lighting conditions and the surrounding environment do not interfere with image color.

Finally! A LCD Monitor for Imaging!.......2005-12-20
The claim for CRT-level color was just what I was looking for, but frankly I didn't really know LaCie and I didn't know if the product was going to perform. I bought it in January this year, and tested it carefully. While it is true that no monitor is "perfect" this one REALLY COMES THRU!!! It put my CRT monitor to shame. Even better, I was able to calibrate the monitor with Monaco EZ Color 2, which is "not rated" for LCD monitors. It seemed to perform just as well on the LaCie as on my CRT monitor. I would not give up this monitor for anything else on the market I am aware of! I can do exacting fine art work in Photoshop on this monitor, and get the results I want from the resulting prints. I even use the monitor at a lower resolution (native is 1600 x 1200 - I use 1280 x 1024). The resolution conversion is excellent - there is no noticable blur and text is sharp and clear.
My only complaint was a display overlay when the monitor first was displaying the lower resolution (every time I booted). It turned out I could turn off this warning, which nicely resolved that problem. I have absolutely no issues, and love this product. No bad pixels that I can find.
A really, really good monitor (but not perfect)........2005-07-21
So there weren't any reviews of this monitor on Amazon (as of writing this) and this monitor is simply too good to not have a rating. We tested this monitor against the Eizo CG210 which costs $1200 more. The 321 held it's own, despite being a 10-bit monitor (vs the Eizo's 14). It produced equally as good gradations and we were able to get a very good calibration. The gamut and detail the monitor reproduces is staggering; better than any CRT we ever tested (including the Artisan we own). Were price no object we might have chosen the CG210 for the hardware pivot support. But, for the price of the 321 were able to buy a different graphics card that supports rotation and still save $1000.
But, it isn't perfect. The uniformity of the display is certainly lacking. For a professional monitor I expect an even picture from edge to edge. Having yellow and cyan casts in different areas is disappointing. However, the GC210 wasn't any better. In fact, we haven't seen a monitor yet that displays a nice uniform background. The blue/charcoal color of the bezel is a poor choice of color. Personally I like it, but it seems obvious that you'd want a neutral color surrounding your monitor. Our unit has two hot pixels. It'd be nice if they had a no dead-pixel guarantee. The hood design is a little brain dead. There's no opening for the puck so you must remove the entire hood for every calibration. Also, the inside of the hood isn't felt lined. Calibration is slow; like 20 minutes slow. But, despite what Lacie leads you to believe you can use your Gretag Eye-one Display2 instead of their over-priced colorimeter and still get a true hardware calibration. Also, Lacie's support repuation is sketchy. We just bought the monitor, and we haven't had to use them. But, we've read bad things. Hopefully this won't be an issue.
Despite the long list of negatives, we're still very happy. In fact, we plan on buying four more. Quite simply, this monitor is incredibly accurate and a bargain. The 321 is a performer and certainly the best value amongst hardware calibrated monitors.
