Thinkpad: The underrated laptop.......2004-09-06
Having worked for over 10 years in the information technology field, I've used practically every brand laptop repaired thousands of of them. And I can tell you IBM makes one of the most durable and long lasting laptops, to this day. True, they look very business-like in their plain Model-T choice of black only, but these laptops are the equivalent of the Crown Victoria in the laptop world. There's a reason cops love the Crown Vic and there's a reason salesmen love the ThinkPad: They take a licking and keep on ticking.
I personally dislike the "trackpad" - you know that pad you move your finger over to control the mouse pointer - that is on the majority of the laptops on the market by Dell, HP, etc. but IBM is one of the few that still offers a laptop with the trackpoint, which looks like a little eraser sticking out in the middle of your keyboard. I don't have to remove my hands from the keyboard to move the mouse pointer and this is its main advantage. Plus, you can't accidently click the mouse with your thumbs the same way with the trackpad on Dell or HP laptops.
While this G40 is the low end of the IBM ThinkPads, but I just couldn't pass up the low price. However, be sure to add some memory (I maxed mine at 1GB but most should be ok with 256) This is also recommended because the graphics card shares with the system memory.
Note that IBM does not include any CDs for XP or any of the software so I recommend you purchase Norton Ghost 9.0 to back up everything just in case something happens. You will need an external USB CD burner or an external USB hard drive to do this. This is very important in case you need to restore your computer to its original state down the road.
Another GREAT feature is that the ThinkPad G40 has 4 USB ports. Most laptops seem to have one or two and with 4 most people probably won't need to lug around a USB hub. But, much to my surprise it only has one PCMCIA slot, which is probably ok since most devices are now USB these days; this is probably why IBM compensated for the single PCMCIA slot by added the extra USB ports. This is a very reasonable compromise.
I give this ThinkPad only 4 stars because is does not include WiFi support built in and IBM does not supply a Windows XP CD or a restore CD. You can buy a WiFi card for a mere $30-$40 but not providing a restore CD is inexcusable! Most users will never bother to back up their systems so they will be in big trouble if something happens, requiring a restore. Otherwise a great laptop which I highly recommend...just make sure you create a backup right away!
