Book Description
Merlin the Magician will not eat or sleep or speak to anyone in Camelot. What can be done? The enchantress Morgan knows who to ask
for help: young Jack and Annie of Frog Creek, Pennsylvania! The brother-and-sister team quickly head off in the magic tree house on another magical and historical adventure.
Their mission: discover one of the four secrets of happiness.
Their journey: to a land of fierce samurai and great beauty, the capital city of Edo (now the city of Tokyo), in ancient Japan in the 1600s.
Their tools: a research book to guide them and a magic wand with three special rules.
In Dragon of the Red Dawn, Mary Pope Osborne transports readers back to the splendor, rich culture, and magic of traditional Japan.
Customer Reviews:
I recommend this book.......2007-06-10
I liked it because Jack and Annie travel to Japan which is a really cool place and I think more people should read this book. It is better than any other book because it is the newest of the series.
Dragon of the Red Dawn.......2007-05-27
This is a wonderful book for kids. I love it, so much that I bring it with me everywhere I go. I have read this, and like it. It takes place In old Japan. Jack and Annie meet a poet named Basho, and spend the day with him. I have learned about Basho in school and most of the things the book told about him I knew. I was thrilled reading about the Samuarai, and when the fire came around I was so excited I almost screamed! Dragon of the Red Dawn is a good book to read.
Hard for parents to suspend belief, but the kids loved it........2007-05-14
Another classic Magic Treehouse installment, this time in imperial Japan. The haiku and deatils of life in Edo made this book informative for the little ones (4,6) and a little more interesting for the parents reading it. The fact that it involves a dragon was a big plus for both of them. The rating is only relative to other magic treehouse books, and not to the vast choice of better children's literature out there. All that said, I am sure it would make a good read for 7-8 year olds delving into books on their own for the first time.
Dragon .......2007-05-07
My granddaughter loves dragons and has read the book from cover to cover and enjoyed it.
GREAT ADDITION TO A GREAT SERIES.......2007-05-06
The Magic Tree House Servies, in my opinion, are a good thing. Not only do we get a rather well told story that kids can relate to, we also get a book that actually teachers the kids something. In this work, Jack and Annie of Frog Creek, take off for ancient Japen (1600s) to find the secret of happiness. This books gives us a wonderful account of ancient Japan, it's culture, traditional folk tales and is loaded with historical facts. The book is very well written as the author is a natural story teller and I was quite impressed with the illustrations. This is a work the kids seem to enjoy, which is a pretty good indorsement for a young persons book. Just a note: I have seen some critical comments (very, very few) in the review section of other books in this series, as to to the use of "majic" as a theme. Folks, if you don't like your children to read books such as this, simply tell them no. If your child has trouble distinguishing between fiction, fantasy and reality, perhaps you should read the books with your child and point out the defferences....it would probably do both of you some good. Overall, recommend this work and the others in the series quite highly.

This is NOT your average how-to guide! .......2007-06-11
"Every major sales answer you need to know is in this book." -From the Book.
Take a look inside this book and you'll see that this is no ordinary how-to guide. This guy is brilliant in that he has went off the beaten path of how a book is supposed to look. The book is approximately 5x8 in size, and is covered in red fabric and comes with a handy built in bookmark. I love the use of color throughout the book. The author has chosen to color important words and phrases throughout, to make them stand out in your mind, and there are some tasteful illustrations that enhance the messages conveyed.
I know so many sales people who don't like to read. If that's you, well, then you'll LOVE this book because not only is it an easy book to read and understand, but the style is totally fun. You may even forget you're reading and all the while you'll come away with a new perspective on selling!
I was hooked and knew I had to have this book from the beginning. I love the unconventional style of the book. Now, besides the great job he did on the look of the book, there is some extremely good information contained within these red walls. 99.5 real world answers are contained within 6.5 chapters. Loads of great advice on things like setting goals and How to do your best every day, prospecting, and even how to write a thank you note.
This book has more than earned it's spot on my bookshelf!
The first "Red" book is the one to buy!.......2007-06-03
Don't get me wrong, I really think Gitomer is a great writer and speaker but this book just rehashes topics he has already covered in his two best sales books, the Little Red Book of Sales and The Sales Bible. I love his "easy to read / no BS " style. Unfortunately for the reader there is nothing new here. Purchase the two aforementioned books and study those. I agree with another reviewer that each book he comes out with is not as potent as his first books. But I don't blame him for writing these watered down versions of his most popular books... He is making lots of $$$!
Little Read Book of Sales Answers, by Gitomer.......2007-05-27
Understanding sales, whether you have done it all your life as I have (since I was 15 I'm 55) or you are just starting is crucial to your success. As the most successful salesperson in every company and position that I have had - I was amazed at what I learned from this to make me even more successful. Read the book, along with all his other books, find a commission job, as risky as it seems, (or start your own sales company) and there will be no limit to your income. The limit will come from you on your terms.
Doubled my sales.......2007-05-27
This book changed the way I looked at sales. I had gotten tired of having lousy sales months and picked up this book before a long flight. I devoured it and after my vacation immediately put just a few of Jeffrey's suggestions into action. It works! I've purchased many copies of this book to give to clients and friends. It's a great introduction to his "little book" series. (Plus the font is big with lots of graphics - so it's an easy read, too.) If you're in sales and want to sell more and change your mindset - read this book!
Gitomer's little book hold a lot of value.......2007-05-27
I picked this book up at an airport on a business trip. It helped change my career by changing the way I think. He answers a lot of questions in an easy to read guide. I was very busy when I bought it- but the format makes it easy to put down and pick back up again. He is slightly repetitive- but that helps when you can't always sit down and read in one sitting. He also recommends other great sales books.....again, several times.
However, Gitomer is a no excuses kind of person. He makes you own your own success, and I am a huge fan of that approach.
His book is filled with everyday tidbits and tips that you really can apply. From simple pieces of advice and beyond- it's even filled with the non-obvious tips. In today's world of sales (everyone is selling something, right?) it's hard to be remembered. With his advice- you won't be forgotten. I apply some of his advice everyday and it's helped me to win big!

Book Description
On a trip to England, physicist Portia Harding is stalked by a heart-stoppingly handsome maniac.Theondre North is a nephilim-the son of a fallen angel-who needs Portia's help to change his fate. Problem is, Portia's down-to-earth attitude frustrates beings from both heavenly and hellish realms-and gets Theo turned into a vampire. But at least he has Portia to satisfy his newfound hungers-and possibly save his soul.
Customer Reviews:
4 stars.......2007-06-25
Portia Harding was an uber-skeptic, but while on a trip to England, did agree to try to be more open to the idea that there was more to the world than what can be proven. Barely was the promise made than she had to make good on it. While relaxing in a fairy ring, she reads a summoning spell and in response, a woman calling herself the virtue, Hope, shows up, giving her the "Gift" before fleeing from pursuers unknown. Portia thinks she's just having a delusion, even after handsome Theo North shows up demanding that she grant him forgiveness and forcibly removing both her and her friend, Sarah from the fairy ring. The two women escape, but he continues to come after them, stating that he's a nephilim and needs her to forgive him. That's only the beginning of the weirdness. Odd people begin popping up to put Portia through "trials" so that she can join the Court of Divine Blood and take on her role as a virtue. Finally, Portia is forced to believe what is going on is real. Of course, by that point, the situation has turned dire. Theo has lost his soul and been turned into a Dark One, with her as his Beloved; and she has been accused of murdering Hope. Portia has scant days in which to complete her trials successfully, restore Theo's soul, and prove her innocence. She might also get to save the Court of Divine Blood in the process, but that's almost a side benefit. One thing's certain, when Portia is wrong, she's wrong in a big way.
**** Another certainty, in the real world, is that if readers are looking for clever, witty, paranormal romances, then they need look no further than Katie MacAlister to begin their list. Portia's conversion from skeptic to believer is filled with laughs and highlighted by moments of profoundness. This is the Best Dark One novel yet, and the ones that came before it were wonderful. ****

nice quick read.......2007-06-24
nice quick read, plot moves well, nice character development, easy reading for a summer afternoon, can finish in a few hours
I was disappointed.......2007-06-13
I love Katie Macalister's Aisling Grey Series so I was eager to start reading this book. After 135 pages I simply gave up, luckily I had a Keri Arthur for back up! The Portia character over analyzes everything to the point of boredom and then does it all over again a few chapters later. I got it the first time, you do not believe in the paranormal. Didn't some one write that a reader reads once and retains so you do not need to belabor a point over and over again? Portia is a pain pain and in my opinion the romance never really took off. Plus both character and author seem to have reglious hang ups and religion, like politics, is always a touchy subject.
Red Hot Read.......2007-06-11
The Last of the Red-Hot Vampires Wonderful and fun reading as usual from Katie MacAlister. I don't think I have ever been disappointed with any of her books. This is a MUST read for anyone who wants to laugh and cheer at the same time!
Luke Warm with Possibility of Simmering.......2007-06-05
This was a nice little story that was inventive but far too fast paced. The speed of the action, for me, was the largest deterent to this book being ranked higher. The characters just sort of go from hating each other to being wildly in love. Our extremely sceptical physist heroine just suddenly believes. Our 1700 year old angel? hero who has loved before just suddenly deals really well with having his soul sucked from him. Wouldn't you think that this would effect him more than anyone else due to his being half-angel?
And how exactly does the baddy know that those two will fall for each other and she will be his beloved which is integral to his plans? All the other Dark One's have had to search for centuries for their Beloved's but his is already there.
Altogether, it was a mostly satisfying read that was worth sprawling around with on a lazy day...but it deservedly shouldn't be flying off the shelves. It's just not as good as the first three books in the series. i'm relieved to say I feel it is better than the last book "Even Vampires Get the Blues" which kind of stank the place out. Though I still have real issues with young vampires going out in the noon day sun. I hope Ms. MacAlister can get this once great series back on track. An avid reader who devoured all of her other books I have to admit that I didn't even bother to purchase this one but instead waited and borrowed it from a freind.

"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! (Ages 4 to 8)

The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.
"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood-the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers-Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah-the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society.

A great read..........2007-07-01
This book was selected for my book club and I am so glad it was. I'll admit - it is a bit of a slow read at first (and in the middle), but the ending is so good. The details in the first half of the book are appreciated even more when you get to the second half. The Red Tent is our inspiration to always, always finish a book.
This book is a must!!!!!!!.......2007-06-16
Thi book was very compelling. I could not put it down. Please do not miss this page turner. Please realize it is fiction and as such threatens no religious beliefs. Enjoy.
Quite simply, amazing........2007-06-13
I first read this book in my senior year of highschool and have reread it a few times since. The story is a powerful rendition of motherhood and life. I won't rewrite the plot as so many before have done, but it is a fictional take on the biblical story of Dinah. For all you who are interested in the origins, Dinah is Joseph's sister and Jacob's daughter. In the bible she is supposedly avenged for her rape, but this novel takes a new look at the story, from Dinah's perspective of "what really happened". If you buy the book you will notice that the first chapter is difficult to get through. WIth all the names mentioned, it is hard to keep track. My suggestion is to tear out (or copy) the chart provided of everyone's lineage and glance at it when need be. Trust me, it is well worth it to get through and the rest of the book is significantly easier.
It is a quick read for me, as I cannot put it down once I start. Diamant's ability to draw you into the story, to feel as though you too are experiencing the world of Dinah is fantastic. You will feel for these women, and hopefully, as I did, feel as greater sense of how far women have come. This book is a treasure that I reccommend to all my friends. No, I demand they read it. As I put in the title of this review, it is quite simply, amazing.
A woman to woman connection.......2007-06-11
The Red Tent is an amazing book - it reflexes the connection between women of all ages (but mostly of "child bearing age"). This book would be one that I would highly recommend that perhaps a mother and a daughter, or friends would definitely share.
A Fiction Book.......2007-06-09
Last time I looked, this was a fiction book...not a retelling of the bible. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, thought it was extremely well written and engaging. I then wanted to review the book on Amazon but decided to read some other reviews first.
It seems that most of the negative reviews say that the reason they don't like the book is because it doesn't match what the bible says about the characters, or that it is anti-men, too feminist, or that it has too many child birth scenes, etc, etc. Get a life people. I understand that your religion is important to you. Therefore if someone wrote a book about figures in the bible that went against their portrayal in the bible and labeled the book NON-fiction, I guess you would have a reason to be offended. But this is a FICTION novel.
For the life of me I will never understand why people can be SO offended by something that supposedly goes against their religion. If you are truly confident in your religious choices, then anything that is said about it, no matter how blasphemous, shouldn't be able to touch you, right? Then why get so offended and scared that people might question it? If you don't feel its true, just ignore it and go on and read the bible over and over again and don't ever have a thought beyond that. Leave the creative thought to the rest of us who actually have an imagination. The people who believe that God sees whats actually in our hearts, not the God who wants to police our literature.

Easy Read.......2007-05-14
I think I was looking for something more from this book and did not receive what I had expected.
Must read for those men who care about values.......2007-05-07
Not a page turner, but a great read for men, or anyone, who wants to pass along good family values. Easy to read short chapters, that do not contain any really new information, but great perspective and life examples from a leading Christian businessman. Great book for a discussion starter for men's small groups. I have already purchased several additional copies to pass along to others.
Must read for every family.......2007-05-07
Bought 3 books, had the oldest child read one first. She has passed it along to co workers, gave one as a gift. Have made the practice of reading one chapter of Proverbs per day. Very good book. Each home in America should have one.
Not what I expected.......2007-05-07
I really like the whole concept of this book. Little tips here and there about life and how to be with people. Like the title says, "Wisdom". To my disappointment, this book is hugely grounded on Christian beliefs. I have complete respect for all religion, but it's hard to consume this information because it refers to the Bible constantly. I felt a bit mislead by how this book is portrayed to the consumer. If I knew it was a Christian-based book, I would not have purchased it.
Good fatherly advice.......2007-05-05
I read 2-3 chapters every morning while sitting on my patio w/ the dogs. Each morning I walked away w/ something positive.
Much of the advice reminded my of lessons my father taught me while growing up that I didn't really listen to. I'm glad I had the chance to hear it again while my dad is still around, so I could thank him for it.

Book Description
Now in paperback, the New York Times bestseller by one of rocks most provocative figures Scar Tissue is Anthony Kiediss searingly honest memoir of a life spent in the fast lane. In 1983, four self-described knuckleheads burst out of the mosh-pitted mosaic of the neo-punk rock scene in L.A. with their own unique brand of cosmic hardcore mayhem funk. Over twenty years later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, against all odds, have become one of the most successful bands in the world. Though the band has gone through many incarnations, Anthony Kiedis, the groups lyricist and dynamic lead singer, has been there for the whole roller-coaster ride. Whether hes recollecting the influence of the beautiful, strong women who have been his muses, or retracing a journey that has included appearances as diverse as a performance before half a million people at Woodstock or an audience of one at the humble compound of the exiled Dalai Lama, Kiedis shares a compelling story about the price of success and excess. Scar Tissue is a story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemptiona story that could only have come out of the world of rock.
Customer Reviews:
An unexpected, but interesting read!.......2007-06-17
" Scar Tissue" is undoubtedly one of the most unusual books I have ever read. The story itself is very interesting. Lead singer of RHCP Anthony Kiedis tells his audience about his childhood, going from michigan to being with his very laid back father in California. As the story progresses, he reveals trouble he runs into with girls, drugs and with establishing a truly original band way before its time. Although most of the story seemed a little repetitive and the ending was somewhat disappointing, I thought the book was great. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read.
3.5; fascinating yet frustrating read.......2007-05-22
To be honest: Red Hot Chili Peppers were always kind of a hit-and-miss band to me. For every great song such as Under the Bridge or Otherside, you have records with quite a few fillers, underdeveloped songs or just way too many (Stadium Arcadium for sure is here). Delving into an autobiography of singer Anthony Kiedis would seem a strange thing since I'm not that big a fan although I do enjoy a track or 4. There's some interesting tidbits and insights yet there's other parts that are just hard to like by how repetitive it feels or his odd judgment.
The book is basically a huge look into how Kiedis became the frontman for the band. With sections detailing how his young life was filled with parties, drugs and women which continued as he formed friendships with Michael Balzary (Flea) and Hillel Slovak. The big topic here is drugs and the kicking of the habit and the relapses as well as the many relationships whether they were serious or just road ****s. We read how the recordings of albums were brought out, insights into songs as well as the news that Slovak overdosed and current guitarist John Frusciante's drug battles which rivaled and even exceeded Kiedis'.
One thing struck me is that it's actually a very accessible book to read. He writes like it's a conversation between the two of you, albeit one-sided and you never feel like he went into "author mode" and wanted to get all scholarly with his vocabulary. Although when describing music he does get into that repeated talk of the "magic, wonder, love etc" of making of music. Guy comes up with one bass riff and wow, what a magical song! No wonder Stadium Arcadium was so big, they didn't have the sense to chop out anything because they're all gold because they created them. Many though will get kind of tired of the constant drug use and the kicking the habit only to go back again. While it is the mindset of a druggie to use it as a fallback in case things get too crazy, we don't have to hear it all over and over. It's like copy and paste.
Of course the other thing I noticed is the large amount of women he's bedded. From more serious ones such as actress Ione Skye or Jaime Rishar to just encounters on the road such as a Kentucky woman, a Hawaiian one and whatnot, there's plenty of sex to go around. Problem is, as one reviewer pointed out, he does have a tendency to put onto people certain traits and qualities that all but excuse behaviors. Couple of girls, Claire or Jennifer let's say, are almost as destructive as he is and yet he just keeps at it (probably because of all-night sex/drug binges they had). At one point, he literally says he just doesn't love Rishar anymore yet you get the feeling these 2 were the better match. Then of course there's a whole thing with a Japanese girl that you'd best read for yourself.
For many RHCP fans, this is the book to read although you most likely will disagree or just plain get irritated by some of what he says. Now bring on the John Frusciante book; now that would be fascinating.
A must for Anthony/RHCP fans.......2007-05-21
I read this book in one weekend...I couldn't put it down. My favorite part is the last sentence...I'm not going to spoil it for you, don't skip to it either!!
Fantastic Book..........2007-05-20
What a great read...i couldnt put it down. I'm a huge music fan, but not like THE number one RHCP fan. I've never seen them live, and dont have every one of their CD's. But i've always been a fan of Anthony, and interested in what he's been thru. I had a loved one who sufferred from drug addiction, and this gave me soooo much insight into the disease.
I was surprised at how warm and loving he seems, and enjoyed the stories of his childhood, all the band stories - i'm amazed hes still alive, and i dont know HOW he doesnt have any kids!?
The ending is great, and his reflections on drug addiction and sobriety really moved me. I really thought this book had it all. I LOVED it.
Honest and Awesome.......2007-05-16
This book is a great read. It spans the life of Anthony Kiedis in first person from birth, through his school years with Flea, the formation of his various musical ventures and the ups and downs of RHCP through the album By The Way. There's sex, drugs, rock & roll with a little more sex and drugs thrown in on top. It's obviously written from the viewpoint of an older, more mature and very reflective Kiedis, owning up to his faults and highlighting his many talents, while detailing his progression into and out of drug addiction. If you love RHCP, you'll love hearing their story from the amazing front man. If you've never heard of RHCP, you'll love the story of a man struggling to be the best person he can in a life of rockstar morals and hollywood dreams. Definitely read this book.

Amid his efforts to expose the Russian mob, Robert I. Friedman learned from the FBI that "the most brilliant and savage Russian mob organization in the world" had put a $100,000 price on his head. Reading Red Mafiya, it's not hard to see why: this is a brave book about a troubling subject. Friedman, a freelance journalist, describes the research behind it: "I ventured into the Russians' gaudy strip clubs in Miami Beach; paid surprise visits to their well-kept suburban homes in Denver; interviewed hit men and godfathers in an array of federal lockups; and traveled halfway around the world trying to make sense of their tangled criminal webs, which have ensnared everyone from titans of finance and the heads of government to entire state security services." Their racket involves heroin smuggling, weapons trafficking, mass extortion, and casino operation, among other activities. "Blending financial sophistication with bone-crunching violence, the Russian mob has become the FBI's most formidable criminal adversary, creating an international criminal colossus that has surpassed the Colombian cartels, the Japanese Yakuzas, the Chinese triads, and the Italian Mafia in wealth and weaponry," writes Friedman. They've even penetrated professional hockey, as Friedman shows in an eye-opening chapter ("Federal authorities have come to fear that the NHL is now so compromised by Russian gangsters that the integrity of the game itself may be in jeopardy").
Red Mafiya benefits from a breezy narrative in detailing a master criminal operation whose influence on the United States is growing rapidly. Russian mobsters already have siphoned off millions of dollars in foreign aid meant to prop up their country's economy--and they may have a more direct impact on American national security concerns in the years ahead: "The Russian mob virtually controls their nuclear-tipped former superpower," writes Friedman. Now, there's a scary thought. Lifting the Iron Curtain seems to have been a mixed blessing: it let freedom in, and organized crime out. --John J. Miller
Book Description
"In North America alone there are now thirty Russian crime syndicates operating in at least seventeen U.S. cities, most notably New York, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Denver. The Russians have already pulled off the largest jewelry heist and insurance Medicare frauds in American history, with a net haul exceeding $1 billion. They have invaded North America's financial markets, orchestrating complex stock scams, allegedly laundering billions of dollars through the Bank of New York, and coolly infiltrating the business and real estate worlds.
"The Russians didn't come here to enjoy the American dream," New York state tax agent Roger Berger says glumly. "They came here to steal it." -From the Introduction From an award-winning investigative journalist comes an astonishing exposi of Russian organized crime, its growing power in the United States, and its terrifying implications for the rest of the world.
In the past decade, from Brighton Beach to Moscow, Toronto to Hong Kong, the Russian mob has become the world's fastest-growing criminal superpower. Trafficking in prostitutes, heroin, and missiles, the mafiya poses an enormous threat to global stability and safety. The black-market corruption of the Brezhnev era proved the perfect breeding ground for organized crime. Beginning in the 1970s, Soviet ?migr?s--including a large number of felons and murderers the USSR was happy to get rid of--began arriving in the United States and quickly established themselves as a major criminal force in New York, Las Vegas, and elsewhere. But it was the breakup of the Soviet Union that made the
Russian mob what it is today. In a weakened, impoverished Russia, it quickly became the dominant power. And it has now spread to every corner of the United States, infiltrating its banks and brokerage firms--and American law enforcement is just waking up to this enormous problem. No journalist in the world knows more about the Russian mob in America than Robert Friedman. At great risk to himself, he has made connections with a number of top criminals who have gone on record about their activities for the first time. The result of his discoveries is a revelation: the Red Mafiya is everywhere. The implications--for law enforcement, the economy, foreign policy, for the American people themselves--are staggering."
Customer Reviews:
for lack of "0" star option.......2007-04-29
Bottom line: this is not what you'd expect - 90's Russian mafia in the West stories. I was duped into... by the title 7 years ago... and pissed of by the good reviews which I saw now.
The great robbing of Russia and the spill-overs into the world have nothing to do with the hoodlum stories of this book.
Publishers do that: once a topic gets media attention... publish anything related.
CRAP!
Quite Shocking!.......2006-10-07
This is quite shocking of how the mafia is able to buy off members of both major political parties in the U.S. along with other Western nations such as Israel. I would also recommend reading Double Cross about Sam and Chuck Giancana the two mafia bosses whom had the Kennedys in their pockets.
Inciteful and Highly Readable.......2006-05-12
A real eye-opener. Friedman writes about some pretty ruthless, cruel people. I don't know how the author could have possibly obtained all the information that he did; he is a brave man. I hope he's still alive, and will be amazed if he is, given the nature of the people about whom he has written. Friedman describes Russian Mafiya types operating in Toronto, near to where I live -- very unnerving. Mind you, if you live in NYC, Miami, Denver, San Francisco or Los Angeles, you are not alone...
Great Information........2006-02-11
Friedman has done the public a service by this book. It renews my faith that there are a few, albeit an extremely small number, jews who will tell the truth.
Most pertinent is Friedman admitting the following:
That, due to encouragement from the Jewish Anti-Defamation League ". . .state and Federal law enforcement agencies were loath to go after Russian mobsters, instead devoting their energies to bagging Italian wiseguys . . .because the Russian Mob was mostly Jewish, it was a political hot potato. . ."
Thus, the crackdown on the Italian mafia is designed to open criminal doors to jewish gangsters, who number about 6,000, according to Friedman. Gee, isn't it wonderful to see your tax dollars at work?
It's clear that jewish attorneys are double agents to assist in the bringing down of the Italian mafia. Note that Cherkoff (jew) spent all his energies on bringing down the Italian mafia.
its not enough.......2005-10-19
but its informative for somebody interested in a brief read. this book doesn't crack the tip of the iceberg on the subject of the Russian mafia, but it is a nice introduction

"Sublime . . . complex and riveting."-Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post Book World
"A vivid picture of modern Chinese society . . . a work of real distinction."-The Wall Street Journal
"[A] terrific series. . . . [Qiu's] perspective on China gives the mystery genre a cultural twist and unusual direction that make his books unique and well worth reading."-The Rocky Mountain News
Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Police Bureau is taking a vacation, in part because he is annoyed at his boss, Party Secretary Li, but also because he has been made an offer he can't refuse by Gu, a triad-connected businessman. For what seems to be a fortune-with no apparent strings attached- he is to translate a business proposal for the New World, a complex of shops and restaurants to be built in Central Shanghai, evoking nostalgia for the "glitter and glamour" of the 1930s.
It is up to Detective Yu, Chen's partner, to take charge of a new case. Yin, a novelist, has been murdered in her room. At first it seems that only a neighbor could have committed the crime, but when one confesses, Yu cannot believe that he is really the killer. As Yu looks further into Yin's life, ample motives begin to surface, even on the part of Internal Security. But it is only when Inspector Chen steps back into the investigation that the culprit is apprehended. And then Chen discovers how Gu has played him and how he, in turn, can play the new capitalist system.
Qiu Xiaolong was born in Shanghai and received an MA in English and American literature in China. He received a PhD in comparative literature from Washington University in St. Louis, where he now teaches. He is the author of Death of a Red Heroine, which has now been translated into seven languages, and A Loyal Character Dancer, both available in paperback from Soho Crime.
Customer Reviews:
Inspector Chen Strikes Again.......2007-06-22
Let me set out my bias at the outset: I love the Inspector Chen novels. I drink up each one and can't wait for the next to be published. The real question is why do I enjoy them so much. The mysteries themselves (this one included) are not so mysterious. They are relatively straightforward. No novel twists and turns to challenge the mind. So, as a mystery, I would rate the books as mediocre. But the characters are fantastic. They are tortured -- each struggling to find his or her own way in a society that changes year to year, even month to month. Things that were taboo a decade ago are now norms. The characters wrestle not only with how to adapt to these changes but whether to adapt at all. After all, haven't we seen China develop down a path only to abruptly change course in "1984" fashion? Some criticize the prose as being plodding. But the prose mirrors the characters. They are deliberate -- unsure of the changes in themselves and society. I love the Inspector Chen novels, not because of the mysteries but because of Inspector Chen and all the other characters.
Fascinating Foray.......2007-06-13
In this detective novel, Qiu Xiaolong gives a detailed account of the tragic effects of the Cultural Revolution on ordinary -- and extraordinary -- people living in Shanghai in the 1990's. I could not solve the mystery, but I adored the poetry-spouting detective (who is probably quite a bit like the author) so much that I ordered Qiu's anthology of Tang and Song poetry.
When Red is Black.......2007-04-23
This is the third novel in Qiu Xiaolong's Inspector Chen mysteries.
The murder of a dissident author comes at an inconvenient time for Inspector Chen. He has just taken a break from his "iron rice bowl" job to engage in some highly paid free-lance translating. At first he is content to leave the investigation of the murder to his deputy, Sergeant Yu, but pressed by Party Secretary Li and by his own growing curiosity, he becomes fully involved in the unravelling of the murder case.
His translating job, however, continues. He has been given the task by Dynasty karaoke club owner Mr Gu (introduced in the previous novel A Loyal Character Dancer). Mr Gu, who has Triad connections, has also supplied Chen with a xiaomi, or personal secretary, the young and attractive White Cloud.
By coincidence, the murder has taken place in a shikumen, one of the traditional styles of housing created during the era of the Foreign Concessions in Shanghai; the translation undertaken by Chen is of an investment proposal for a major commercial, retail and residential precinct in the heart of Shanghai designed in the shikumen style. The author creates an interesting tension between the reality of life in the shikumen that is the murder site (no privacy, too many families living in incredibly cramped conditions) and the proposed New World project, the success of which, according to Chen "would depend on a myth - on nostalgia for the glitter and glamour of the thirties, or to be exact, on the recreation of that myth - blending the past into a delicious brew, a cup of cappuccino, to delight customers in the nineties" (p. 23).
Having been to Shanghai's model renovation in the shikumen style, the area known as Xintiandi, I can relate to the author's bemused sense of contradiction: the little museum and founding site of the Chinese Communist Party (my destination) is hardly noticeable among the yuppified coffee shops and bars of the new New China!
As with his previous novels, Qiu Xiaolong intersperses his narrative with insightful sociological observations. Some of these relate to the Cultural Revolution, which forms a backdrop to the murder, whilst others clearly reflect the author's concern with the growing gap between rich and poor that emerged in the wake of Deng Xiaoping's reforms: "The New World could turn out to be like present-day China, full of contradictions. On the outside, the socialist system under the rule of the Communist Party, but on the inside, capitalist practice in whatever disguise. Could the combination of the two really work?" (p. 139).
Nor would it be a Chinese novel without reference to food. White Cloud turns out to be an accomplished cook: "She finally emerged, carrying a large tray with a broad smile. `From the Dynasty Club,' she announced, placing on the folding table an impressive dinner that included some delicacies he had never seen before. One was a small dish of fried sparrow gizzards, golden crisp. How many sparrows had gone into the making of that dish, he wondered. The other dish, of duck, was also original - it was duck heads with the skulls removed, so people could easily reach the tongues, or suck out the brains. It was the sauna shrimp, however, that really impressed him. River shrimp were brought to the table in a glass bowl, live, still jumping and wriggling. She also provided a small wooden pail whose bottom was covered with red hot stones. She poured some wine into the bowl of shrimp, then took the drunken shrimp from the bowl and put them into the pail. There was a shrill hiss, and in two or three minutes, a plate of sauna shrimp appeared." (p. 108).
Some western reviewers have found the narrative pace and unexpected thrills of the mystery genre lacking in this novel; however, it is an intriguing tale and a pleasure to be transported back to a familiar Chinese setting.
Michael Williss
Highly recommended.......2007-04-13
Another engaging Inspector Chen mystery, but this time his sidekick Detective Yu is more involved, which adds breadth to the story. But this is not so much a mystery as a portrait of modern Shanghai, which in spite of its economic boom is still haunted by the horror of the Cultural Revolution. Although the denouement seems a bit dragged out, this is a finely written piece of work.
A wonderful writer!.......2007-01-04
Qiu Xiaolong writes in a way that is so wonderful on several levels:
1. He is a superb writer.
2. These are very good mysteries/crime stories. No pat endings and detailed characters with complex motives and relationships.
