Was Anton von Webern an icon of progressive elements in music or a Nazi sympathizer? According to author Malcolm Hayes, perhaps both appellations are correct. Von Webern is neither as well known as his mentor Schoenberg nor did he achieve the (comparative) popular success of his compatriot Berg. As with other volumes in the Phaidon 20th-Century Composers series, more attention is focused on the life of von Webern than on the details of his music. Hayes recounts the troubled decline of Habsburg Austria in the first half of this century, which gave rise to the brand of modernism championed primarily by Schoenberg. Shot accidentally by an American soldier in 1945, von Webern never saw his postwar successes and was spared the spectacle of some of the claims of his postwar adherents.Customer Reviews:
Solid introduction the fascinating composer.......2000-04-07
Rather than getting bogged down in technical discussions of Webern's serial techniques, the author gives us the composer's life; stopping at crucial musical signposts to explain how his thought evolved. In each case, we're given an idea how to approach the given piece.
Webern's music often seems unearthly, and he comes across as a bit unearthly (or at least very impractical) himself. Still, we get a human portrait of him, which further encourages us to see the passion in his music.
As with all the books in this wonderful series, it contains copious quantities of drawings and photos, a complete list of compositions and a wonderful bibliography for further reading.
If you've always wondered what the big deal about Webern was (to the extent that he influenced 50 years of music, frequently by people who seem not to have understood his muse), this is a good place to start finding out.

Webern and the Lyric Impulse: Songs and Fragments on Poems of George Trakl (Studies in Musical Genesis and Structure)
Anne C. Shreffler Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198162243 |
Book Description
BL A new view of composer Anton Webern, long considered as one of this century's most vigorously intellectual creators Through the detailed examination of the Trakl cycle, Op 14, in the context of the Viennese intellectual and artistic climate, Professor Shreffler examines Webern's compositional process. She shows how Webern's responses to Trakl's complex verse enabled him to expand his musical vocabulary. Whether because of his anxiety of creating a new musical language, or because of an innate hyper-perfectionism (or both), Webern rejected most of what he composed, making Shreffler's emphasis on Webern's compositional process of particular importance. A close examination of the manuscript sources - fragments, sketches, and fair copies - of Webern's comparatively neglected middle-period lieder enables the author to shed light on Webern's musical language and his working methods. It also helps to modify the view that his music progressed steadily in the direction of the twelve-tone technique. In particular, this study shows how the passionate lyricism found in Webern's middle-period songs, rather than articulating a substantially different aesthetic from the later works, provides a better understanding of the consummate lyricism of all his music.
